From Ben Badler's International Review of the NL East over at Baseball America comes this neat fact about the Braves scouting success in the country of Panama:
How well have the Braves scouted Panama? There are just three Panamanian prospects in the 2011 Prospect Handbook, and all three-Randall Delgado, Christian Bethancourt and Dismasther Delgado-were signed by Braves scout Luis Ortiz. Atlanta signed five more Panamanian players last year, most notably catcher Carlos Sanchez and lefthander Oriel Caicedo.
And just to add to the confusion...
Caicedo's brother, also named Oriel Caicedo, is a 19-year-old righthander who pitched for Atlanta's DSL club last summer. The younger Caicedo, 17, is 5-foot-11 and has feel to pitch with a mid-to-high 80s fastball and the beginnings of a solid curveball.
There's good stuff on several other prospects the Braves signed last year, but you've got to subscribe to get the info. And yes, Baseball America is worth a yearly subscription.
By the way, Oriel Caicedo the elder's line for the DSL looks pretty funny: In 21.2 IP, he gave up only 13 hits and struck out 21, but walked 23 (twenty-three) and hit 6 batters. Let's hope his younger brother's "feel to pitch" is better.
