Twins May Look To Swing Trade With Braves For Diamond
That's an interesting headline, but I'm talking about former Braves prospect, pitcher Scott Diamond, who was a rule five draft pick this year. The Twins would have to keep him on their 25-man Major League roster all season in order to keep him in their organization, or offer him back to the Braves (there's a small amount of cash involved). A Twins beat writer tweets his opinion of the Twins thinking:
Rule 5 pick Scott Diamond is a polished LHP. Twins would like to keep him but might work trade with Atlanta to send him to AAA Roch.
Last year the Braves lost Edgar Osuna to the Royals in the rule five draft, but when the Royals offered him back after he failed to make the team in spring training, the Braves strangely declined.
Diamond is a more polished pitcher than Osuna was (no pun intended), so the Braves may be able to get something for him in return from a deep Minnesota farm system.

Curious, what would be a realistic possibility from them?
any chance we can pry away Revere, even if it means throwing in another player? Any near-ready OF or SS we could snag off them?
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
No
Not for anything near Diamond would they move Revere. A recent ranking of the Twins current non-MLB players had Revere 6th for the Twins and Diamond 32nd. I would say it’d take a very significant piece to consider Revere.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
Such as?...
if it’s one major league ready arm (like a Marek, Proctor, Gearrin, etc) and one projectable major leage arm (like a Hale, Hoover, etc), I’d be agreeable to that.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
If they want an arm
they’ll just keep Diamond as he fits what they really need most on the team if Duensing is in the rotation.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
They’re not moving him for prospects. He’s the kind of guy you only move for proven Major Leaguers, at least at this stage.

Not to mention he's like the ultimate Twins player
and it’s rumored that Bill Smith is unhyperbolically in love with him.
OK I made that up, but he’s like their ideal outfielder and they’re not going to trade him. They’d probably trade Span before Revere.

Thanks...
and I’d take Span if that’s feasible and at a reasonable cost (see throwing in the two other arms as described above). He may not be a top CF, but his contract is pretty reasonable and I think he’d be just fine as a CF/LF option alongside Heyward and others. He’d certainly be an upgrade over McLouth imo.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
But arms are not what the Twins need
They need infield depth in the minor leagues and middle infield depth on the major league team. I just don’t see the Twins and Braves as good trading partners for any sort of a significant piece.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
Proctor?
How is that a “quality” arm? ;)
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
If he's back on track...
he can add a quality reliever. if not, then they wouldn’t want him. The point was, you could toss in two arms, one younger with upside (ala Hoover, Hale, Oberholtzer, among several others) and another who could help their pitching staff now (Proctor, Marek, Gearrin, Kawakami?, etc). They’ve got a solid pitching staff both rotation and bullpen, but you can never have too much quality pitching (and this assumed Proctor pitching this spring in a way that justified giving him a guaranteed deal and worthy of a spot in someone’s bullpen).

I went ahead and deleted my FS on the tweet so it doesnt clutter up the side of the screen. My thought: personally, I don’t really know what to expect to get back, but if they offer a decent bat, I’d be happy.

There's not much precedence for this....
But I assume they wouldn’t give us much to keep him… We have little need for him w/ our glut of pitching at the AAA level… They could probably offer cash to us and we’d be happy. These guys have all been in this situation…
* R.A. Dickey
* Willy Taveras
* Mitch Williams
* Jason Jones
* Evan Meek
* Chuck Lofgren
Of course, if I named my source, I’d probably be banned from posting anymore… So I will just say, looking at what it took to get those guys, we shouldn’t expect too much.

I'd think an A-Ball Arm is about his value
But MIN is strong and deep in OF prospects. I know Hicks and Revere are out as well as both the guys on their 40-man (Benson, Toscani) and their higher upside prospects (Morales, Arcia, Kepler-Rozycki). Even so, they’ve still got plenty of interesting prospects at the position who could be useful both with the bat and in the field. The 2 names that I interested in are Eddie Rosario (leadoff hitting CF type) and Nate Roberts (corner OF bat) – neither has gotten out of Rookie Ball though. No idea if MIN would part with either for what we see as a fringe ML’er…
Realistically
I think Roberts could be had as Twins brass don’t seem to be as high on him as you’d think, but he is still higher-thought-of by prospectors than Diamond, but then again lefty swing pitchers aren’t exactly the thing prospect types really focus on. The team is in love with Rosario, probably because Revere and Benson haven’t shown to be leadoff types, and they ultimately want to see Hicks develop more of a power/speed combo for a more middle of the order bat than leadoff.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
Speaking of Jason Jones, he had this to say on the matter:

Yo, Twins: Give ’em something good, like Danny Valencia or Ben Revere. OR ELSE.

It would've cost $25,000
To take him back. The Royals paid $50,000 for him.
Rather than paying the $25k Atlanta said, “nah, you go ahead and keep him”; presumably because they think he’s garbage.

He did pretty well for them in AA
in addition to playing well for us when he was here. He struggled in AAA, but for 23 he looks like something you’d at least want to have in the organization.

Because he throws a straight 4 seam fastball up there in the mid 80s with no deception in his delivery. He’s going to get smashed in the big leagues and give up homeruns in bunches. Not exactly a valuable asset.

If we can get a solid OF prospect, that’d be nice. Otherwise, I think I’d rather have Diamond back, he could be a solid piece for a trade package later this season.
Q: If not us, who? If not now, when? A: The Batman. And "when you least expect it."
also I agree.. we would do it for an outfield or SS prospect
and it sounds like they have the outfielders
Add KK and Marek/Proctor/other arm similar for Ben Revere. Deal.

I’d love to have Diamond back, I think he could end up being a solid back end of the rotation guy for us or a situational lefty out of the pen. I was pretty mad at losing him because of the Wagner situation, especially since Billy ended up retiring anyways.
I don’t think he filed the paperwork yet. Something’s up…He might be back this year

We didn't lose Diamond because of Wagner.
We still had an open spot on our 40-man, and could have protected Diamond if we wanted.
-C
It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
Exactly
DOB:
"Even if the Braves had a spot open on the 40-man, Wren specifically said they would not have protected Diamond, and that they actually had a better shot at getting him later than they would’ve if they had protected him. Here’s the reasoning: If the Braves had protected Diamond before the Rule 5, he would almost certainly have been one of the first players dropped from the 40-man at the end of spring training when the Braves needed the roster spot for a player who might help them this season (Diamond, they determined, was/is not ready to help them this season. They don’t need him this season.)
In not protecting him, they lost him to Minnesota in the Rule 5 draft. The Twins now must keep him on their 25-man (major league) roster the entire 2011 season. There’s a good chance they won’t be able to do that, that they will decide they can’t carry him and need to use that roster spot for a player ready to help the Twins win now. In that case, they must offer him back to the Braves for $25,000, half of the claiming price the Twins paid. If that happens, the Braves would do it and take him back, then wouldn’t have to protect him but rather could simply send him to the minor leagues, since he’s got minor league options. They wouldn’t need to add him to their 40-man and could just let him continue developing in the minors for the season, then could protect him next winter if he’s ready."

I find it very hard to believe that if he was returned then we wouldn’t have to protect him on the 40 man without him clearing waivers 1st. That is simply too large a loophole for in the spirit of what the 40 man roster is in the CBA. Sure, if we reclaimed him and sent him through waivers we could remove him from the 40 man, but any time a player is removed from a 40 man roster (regardless of which 40 man roster was on) then the player would need to clear waivers. I saw the article, but simply don’t believe that DOB had all his facts straight here…
DOB is absolutely right. If Diamond was returned to the Braves they could just put him on a Minor League roster. They don’t have to protect him on the 40 man. He was a Minor League player for him that another team took a gamble on keeping on their roster. The way the Twins get to keep his rights is by keeping him on the 25 man roster. If he goes back to the Braves he goes back to what he was, a Minor Leaguer. Why should the Braves be penalized in this situation?
That’s the way it’s been for years. Those are the rules. If you don’t know then you shouldn’t assume the beat writer, the guy who covers it for a living, doesn’t know either.

but Arodys Vizcaino…good lord. That curveball is absolutely disgusting, and I’ve never seen anyone throw 97 with so little effort before. We embarrassed the Yankees in that trade.

Well seeing as a pretty decent majority of pitchers in the game today will need it at one point or another in his career, it’s really not going out on a limb to speculate on Vizzy needing TJS. If he does, he’ll recover just as everyone else does. Tim Hudson seemed to do pretty well last year.

There are basically two types of pitchers when it comes to that.
Those who have had TJ surgery, and those who will have it.
Rumor
You can toss that around about any pitcher in reality. What you do when pitching the ball that hard on a consistent basis is incredibly damaging to the elbow. With his delivery, shoulder surgery would be much more damaging going forward, so let’s hope to steer clear of that, and we’ll all be very happy with Vizzy’s long career in a Braves uniform.
I’ve seen video of his delivery, and he reminds me a lot of Francisco Liriano. Big difference is that he keys off of a curveball rather than a slider. The curve with his motion would be highly impacted by a shoulder issue, but an elbow issue would be relatively easy to recover from with his pitch grouping. Liriano’s injury issues have made him very ineffective as he strengthens the elbow enough to have good movement on his slider again.
Bert Blyleven has said that the slider is the major difference in pitching now vs. the 60s. In the 60s, few guys had sliders. More had curveballs or lived off of variations on their fastball. The slider is a good compliment to a high-velocity fastball, but it really requires torque from an elbow, which wears on an elbow as well. The long-term high-strikeout guys in the past threw tons of innings on a fastball/curveball combination with few injury issues.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
Yeah, I caught his performance Sunday. First batter especially: Fastball 96. Fastball 97. Hammer at 82. It was unfair… except that he’s a Brave.
He got hit a little bit, but that’s a great curve he’s got, and he was locating the FB. I’d like to see a little more movement on it, but that’s really nit-picking. Only think I saw those 2 pitches from him. Dunno about whether he has a slider and/or changeup.
Sandy Alderson: "There's 'no market' for Luis Castillo or Oliver Perez, even if we wanted to trade them." (All you need to know about the Mets).
Change
His change is a work-in-progress, but it is there, from the scouting I’ve read and what I’ve seen on video, the pitch has potential. It’s not ever going to be a Johan Santana change, but as long as it can just keep hitters from sitting on the hook and the heater, it’s going to be a worthwhile offering.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
I saw too. Aroldys made that first batter (Ian Desmond?) look foolish. Did anyone else feel like Armando Benitez was pitching?

Benitez?
Um, I guess as long as he’s pitching for the Braves and not against them, that’s an okay comp.
Benitez had a 5.40 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and a 1.90 K/BB against us with 7 homers allowed in 48.1 IP over 45 games for a HR/9 rate of 1.3. His career rates were 3.13 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 2.35 K/BB, and 1.1 HR/9

Vizzy
Should have a higher ceiling than an overweight pins-and-needles closer. I’d hope he’s more like Dave Stewart at his best.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
Vizzited
My statement was based on appearance and timing alone. The appearance of the pitcher and the appearance of the ball from when it leaves his hand until it reaches it’s destination. Also, the situation Aroldys was used in (on that day) was similiar as a closer. It wasn’t my intent to establish any statistical comparables or ceilings. I apologize if my remarks were easily misinterpreted.
I hope the timing of Aroldys coming in the 9th explains why, in this instance, I chose a reliever instead of a starting pitcher (Dave Stewart).
