Braves Spring Training Game 34
That was quite a game for an exhibition game last night, wasn't it? Nine relievers all completing their assigned innings. And more or less picking up at Turner Field where we left off last season - a ninth-inning rally off of a somewhat reputable closer (Matt Capps), followed by a 10th inning walk-off homer from someone most aren't familiar with (Mauro Gomez). In fact, many Braves fans are probably more familiar with who he hit it off of instead (Chuck James). But it was still a pleasant win, because typically, I'm used to the Braves seemingly always losing these mini-exhibition series against an AL Central opponent every year.
But anyway, this is it, the final game of the pre-season, and tomorrow, it's the official beginning of the regular season. I'm trying to temper my excitement, but I'll be honest, I have a good feeling about this season.
Your lineup for this 12:05 p.m. day exhibition at the Ted versus the Twins:
- Martin Prado, 3B
- Nate McLouth, CF
- Freddie Freeman, 1B
- Eric Hinske, DH
- Brooks Conrad, 2B
- J.C. Boscan, C
- Matt Young, LF
- Joe Mather, RF
- Brandon Hicks, SS
And Brandon Beachy will be starting the game.

I wonder...
…if most of the Braves regulars are already in DC? I would guess not, but I would think that their bags are packed and we won’t see them at all. Seems silly to have an exhibition game the day before the day-game opener when the two games aren’t in the same city.
Whoever scheduled this week for the Braves needs to be set down and given an old fashioned talking to.

I'm guessing...
Quite a few teams that open on the road play a couple games on their home field right before the season starts. Most players have played there before, but some haven’t had much time at Turner Field. Might as well get them a little more acquainted with the stadium before the season starts.
There are other considerations as well, such as rookie cotton candy slingers, beer fillers, ticket takers, etc., that need to get a little game time in before the season begins. Obviously, the section generals will be in midseason form.

Maybe pitchers
I remember last year, the Braves sent Tim Hudson out to SF ahead of everyone else; granted, that involved time zone changes and likely some personal benefit to going back to the Bay Area for Huddy, but it’s not a stretch for the team to maybe want to get Lowe and Hanson maybe in DC early, to rest up before Opening Day.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Really looking forward to seeing our starting pitchers again. Seems like a long time since we’ve seen Hudson or Hanson.
"It's like winning a war...you need arms and money." Fredi G
Really hoping
That this year, Hanson will get his first 9.0IP complete game. Hell, I want to see any of our pitchers throw a 9.0IP CG this year. I’m not liking this trend of “Braves only get 9.0IP CGs every other year” four-years going now.

That was one of the few decisions last year that I really didn't like
Bobby pulled Hanson from a game that he easily could’ve completed after 8 innings. I still don’t know why.

I think that’s worth celebrating whether it was through the wild-card or through winning the division.
Saying that it’s “lowered expectations” isn’t really fair, I don’t think. Following that logic, we should take all the pennants down except for the 1995 one.

by Taylor Masters on Mar 30, 2011 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions
Agree
Winning divisions is always noteworthy, IMO. I’m happy the Braves got to the playoffs, but celebrating being second-best to all division winners does seem a little petty to an organization as celebrated as the Braves. The only thing that would negated the need for a Wild Card banner was a pennant, or a WS victory, neither of which happened, unfortunately.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Of course it is
but it still gave us a shot to go all the way. And we still had the 3rd-best record in the NL. I see no reason to diminish it just because we happen to be in a division with the Phillies.

I would expect “never” until he has to, which as we saw last year is more likely than we think. I think it’s unfortunate Lucas isn’t much better in the field (if at all). I will go out on a short limb and say that if the Braves experience injuries like last year, Conrad will get sent down before giving him an everyday fill in job.

I kind of knew that’s what you meant (since Greg Norton is still mostly remembered by us for that one useless year rather than the one great year before that) but I’m trying to remain optimistic about how Conrad would fare this year.
His lack of steady fielding in the spring was alarming. His lack of hitting in the spring doesn’t bother me nearly as much. I think he would figure out how to hit.

IIRC
it doesn’t matter what kind of pitcher you are, if your opp. BABIP is significantly lower than average in any given year, it’s flukey.

Oh yeah
Ross Gload is scary looking, with those icy cold looking killer blue eyes. I secretly fear every time I use the term “WARG” (Wins Above Ross Gload) that he’ll eventually get wind and kill me like in an episode of Dexter.

Mauer or McCann?
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mauerjo01.shtml
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mccanbr01.shtml
mauer has hit more than 13 homers once, and it was in his breakout 2009 with 28
Mccann has hit at least 18 for 5 strait years
believe it or not, mccann has the higher slugging average
the difference is obviously that mauer hits for a really high average and has a 400+ on base percentage
still, Mccann can be counted on for about a 375 obp
I gave up trying to argue it
Mauer gets to DH, and in one less season, McCann has subsequently caught just as many games as Mauer has. Factoring in the hypothetical wear-and-tear of the catching position, and that Mauer is absolved of it from time to time while still getting to work his numbers, IMO, it’s an inconclusive debate.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I don't see what's so inconclusive about it
only one of them plays in a real league.

Mauer or McCann?
The answer is, simply, yes.

Statistically...
McCann may end up having better counting stats than Mauer by the end of his career and comparable power numbers (both counting and rates), but that will be shaded by the fact that McCann is going to play in a neutral park and Mauer will (likely) play in an extreme pitcher’s park (especially in the HR dept.).
Then there’s the DH debate to toss on top of it, and we’re never going to get a conclusive comparison, unless one player’s amazing (or the other’s lackluster) future performance decides the “Who’s better” argument for us.
