Braves Lose Hyde And Ortegano Off Waivers
According to David O'Brien at the AJC, the Braves attempted to clear left-handed pitchers Jose Ortegano and Lee Hyde off the 40-man roster by passing them through waivers. Both pitchers, however, were claimed. Hyde was claimed by the Nationals, and Ortegano was claimed by the Yankees.
This is a bizarre move, as I viewed Ortegano as possible rotation depth at triple-A, and Hyde as left-handed relief depth at triple-A. Hyde especially seemed to have a Major League path ahead of him in the bullpen, though it's likely good news for him as the Nationals will use him in the Majors much sooner than the Braves would have.
There was no apparent need to clear any 40-man roster space. The Braves could have placed Kris Medlen on the 60-day disabled list which would have opened up a spot, or they could have finally removed Billy Wagner from the roster.
Perplexing, but I guess they thought Hyde and Ortegano were so far down the depth chart they would never be used. At the very least I would have thought that they would have some nominal trade value, especially considering how quickly they were claimed, but the Braves know their players better than anyone, and they're usually right about this sort of thing.
[UPDATE: 3/23 @ 7:20Ppm]
A couple of tweets from Mark Bowman shed a little more light on these moves:
Don't make too much out of waiver claims. Ortegano was 84-86 mph in camp. No future in ATL. Hyde just had 2 many injuries early in career
And the second tweet:
Gives Braves flexibility to add more attractive pieces to 40-man. Will be a benefit when clubs try to sneak players through waivers next wk
Braves must think there are some players who will be put on waivers next week. Players they have likely been following and like. The more I think about it too, these guys were behind a lot of other relievers in the Braves system, and the probably had no chance of making the club this year or next. They were also cut very early from camp.

well, maybe there’s a reason coming soon (trade, or something cooler that we don’t even know exists yet).

Seems too weird
Why give up a player that has value and get nothing in return if you don’t have to?

Very Weird
Who could they need room for, Lucas and Ramirez? Why not juggle Wagner and Meds? Doesn’t make sense.

Hmm..that's strange.. I would have thought
They could have been packaged for something.. But maybe they are just trimming the fat.. But would think they would at least shop them around a little..

Really bizzare
I hope these moves don’t bite us in the future, even while wishing these players well. I would have thought that these guys would be possible pieces in a later trade. It’s too bad that we couldn’t sneak them through the waiver.

Don't think that Hyde has any value
But it’s strange to lose Ortegano like that. For absolutely nothing.
More on Ortegano
Okay, he had a rough year last year in AAA. The kid is only 23. He was great in AA in 2009. And heck, he wasn’t even THAT bad last year-had a little bit of bad luck. He won’t be 24 until August, and he may yet develop into a serviceable 5th starter. Granted, not likely to happen for the Yankees, but he was valuable.
This saddens me. I’ve always liked Hyde and think Ortegano could eventually be a dominate type lefty bullpen arm.
Lady: What?!? How did HE get to Heaven?
GOD: Oh, he was in a different area code, so technically it wasn't cheating..

Alright...I'm starting to really wonder now.
I can understand letting go of Ortegano and Hyde, but why in the world is Wagner still here? It doesn’t take 5 months to file retirement papers and he’s using a roster spot.

All I keep thinking about is that maybe Wagner doesn’t want his career to end the way it did, having to exit a playoff series due to injury. He didn’t retire for any reason than to spend time with his family, but maybe he’s considering coming back half way through the season. He’ll only be away from his family for a few months instead of eight, and he gets a chance to end his career on a better note.
I’m not getting my hopes up, but I can’t help but wonder.
Agreed...
can’t he go on to a restricted list or something that removes him from the 40 man but keeps him obligated to the Braves should he come back? There’s got to be an option considering he failed to show up for spring training.

Disappointed to see Hyde go.
I’ll always like him because of the GT connection and thought he might have a future as a reliever with Atlanta.
Ortegano I couldn’t care less about losing.

Agreed on both.
I’m especially sad to see Hyde go. He was one of the few Braves players who I actually had an autograph for.

Roster spots
Well here are a few names that could be released or traded in the next week. These guys are on the outside looking in and may not have a place
1. Mark Derosa
2. Ryan Doumit
3. Ryan Spilbourghs- not likely but possible
MLBTR says Fredi wants another RH hitter for the bench
"It's like winning a war...you need arms and money." Fredi G
Because the 3-4 bench spots that are already going to RH hitters just aren’t enough?
Q: If not us, who? If not now, when? A: The Batman. And "when you least expect it."
My own suspicion
is that this comment about wanting a RH complement to Hinske is speaking very loudly that Joe Mather Ain’t Turning Out To Be The Guy We’d Hoped He Would Be.
Mather’s slash line this spring in 42 ABs? .119/.196/.143
That’s it: 5 hits, one double.
Fangraphs, on Craig Kimbrel: "His strikeout rates look like they’re coming from a video game"
We also may be getting Scott Diamond back or a MINN player for 40 man roster
The Twins want to keep him but not on the 25 man roster.
They have to give him back to the Braves or make a trade for him
