Around SBN: Dallas Cowboys Roster: Who'll Be This Year's Surprise Cut?

March Madness is Here!

This is the 2nd year that TC will be doing a community-wide March Madness Bracket. Last year we had about 30 participants with JKowalek taking 1st place and your favorite schmuck coming in 2nd (damn you for losing, Butler.)

Anyways, you should join and it'll be a lot of fun. Please make your "bracket name" the same name that you use on TC. We'll be using Yahoo! as they're the SBN affiliates. Here is the league ID and password, along with URL to get you signed up:

ID: 155401

Password: braves

URL: http://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com/t1/register/joingroup

It's free to join and be sure to have your picks in as soon as possible. Don't worry if you miss the few play-in games on Tuesday or Wednesday...it won't matter in scoring.

Thanks and happy picking!

As a UNC fan, I will admit that I am a bit biased. However, Duke lives and dies by the 3 against good teams. They’ll need to continue shooting lights out like they did against the Heels in order to repeat.

Guess we will see what happens

They said the same sort of things last season between Scheyer, Smith and Singler. That turned out pretty good.

CEO and Founder of the Draft Ryan Mallet bandwagon.

by DolphinNation on Mar 15, 2011 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

And we also said it the 9 years prior when it didn’t work out so well for the Dukies.

I just don’t see it happening. Singler has been awful lately (except the UNC game, of course).

And there is no way Kelly goes 5-5 or anything close to that again.

Ok, honest question here: as a Duke fan, do you honestly like the Plumlee brothers? They seem to get an occasional rebound or the patented Dukie hustle play, but in the few Duke games I have watched this season, they both seem like they kinda suck in a clumsy Baby Louis kind of way.

This season? Nope…can’t stand em, nor Kelly. I honestly believe Mason could be very good, if he works hard on his post moves over the off-season. He’s big and athletic.

I think Josh Hairston should get more playing time IMHO. Ryan Kelly is a waste of oxygen.

If John Henson gets into foul trouble, UNC can go to Knox or rely on Zeller more.

If there is one thing that UNC is not, it’s deep, but even UNC can absorb foul trouble to their big men.

The one place where UNC absolutely cannot get into foul trouble is PG – but with the way Marshall played in the ACC tourney, I’d almost rather see Strickland run the floor. Marshall was just terrible.

Hopefully, he got all of that out of his system.

Just watch…Washington and Arizona (who’ll beat Oakland in Round 2) will both make the Sweet 16. And while I have Duke in the Final 4, they have a huge challenge in Anaheim against San Diego State.

RE: Duke…their first challenge will be Tennessee because of their athleticism, which Duke always has trouble with. If they get past them, it’ll be a smooth ride til they face UConn. I like the matchup vs. ‘Zona, to be honest. Williams scares me, but on the perimeter, I don’t think they can match up with Duke’s guards.

Yeah

Unfortunately we gave the committee the opportunity to keep us out. The loss at Clemson was a little easier to take, but the game against BC on senior night still gets me. Plus the close calls we had earlier in the year against Purdue, UNC, etc. We surely never get the benefit of the doubt, though.

by Cayla on Mar 15, 2011 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

The thing that gets me though

is that beating Florida State in the tourney quarters actually hurt our resume. It knocked Florida State out of the rpi top 50, eliminating two of our top 50 wins. There’s just something messed up when winning a game hurts your resume.

by Cayla on Mar 15, 2011 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

But they wouldn’t have been in without winning an ACC Tournament game anyway. They got hosed yet again. VCU and UAB are only in because they’re mid-majors and the reason for expansion was to get more mid-majors in. The system is flawed because some of the minor conference tournament winners don’t belong in it. You potentially have the 100th best team getting in over the 40th best team just because the crappy team was in the worst conference in the country. Rant completed.

They are a completely different team with Kyrie Irving, and they don’t depend on the 3 near as much with him.

Now I’m not saying they abandon their game plan of “living” by the 3…but even if that’s the case, Irving opens up much better looks from the outside for Smith, Singler, Curry, Dawkins, etc.

Also, as far as the “no post presence to fall back on”….don’t underestimate the Plumlee brothers, as long as they stay out of foul trouble that is.

I have all four #1 seeds in the Final Four...

I don’t think Pitt ends up making it, but I just couldn’t decide who would beat them. Florida is more of a 4-seed and they’re in the pathetic SEC. BYU doesn’t have Davies. Wisconsin got blasted by 25 @ OSU and scored 33 points against Penn State. Kansas State has one player and couldn’t hit a free throw if their life depended on it. St. John’s is without their starting point guard. UCLA can’t shoot for shit. Butler doesn’t do anything well. ODU is a sleeper, but they haven’t shown the ability to beat anyone good. Michigan State is also a sleeper, but they’re a mess. Gonzaga could surprise, but they have no perimeter defense and Jimmer will go off for 40+. Utah State and Belmont could make a run, but they’re not Final Four worthy.

So yeah, I took Pitt and hope for the best.

Final Four

Pitt and (to a lesser extent) Duke have cakewalks. If Kansas can get by Louisville, then they’re probably in. Ohio St. clearly has the toughest road from round to round. If they make it to the Elite 8 they’d likely play Syracuse. Ohio St. doesn’t match up well with them at all. I have three #1’s in because of the matchups.

If I’m gonna be serious…Marquette didn’t even deserve to make it in the NCAA tournament, Kansas St. is a one man inconsistent team, Michigan St. was kinda crappy early in the season and just now got it together, Butler is not that same team from last year—they’re missing their best player from the F4 team and are not good this year. In the eight games with Irving, they played four cupcakes and four average teams. Can’t make any definitive judgment based on that.

So, you knew who he was before this season?

Have you ever looked at his stats? Sure, he has a couple of games where he has hit 40% or so on his shots.

But, he has quite a few 2-9, 2-11 type games behind the arc, and I think anyone can admit that he is no where near good enough to create his own shot in the NBA.

For his career, he is a 26% 3-point shooter.

Now you’re just being dense. Yeah, Arizona wasn’t great last year, but neither was North Carolina. If Jimmer scored 50 against UNC, would you still consider it a fluke against a mediocre team?

Jimmer is the best scorer in college basketball since Steph Curry, and the guy can flat out play. Dos he take a few bad shots? Sure, but so does Kemba Walker, Harrison Barnes, or any other big time scorer.

Most teams also...

don’t have a vastly superior (compared to teammates) scoring option, but as said for the 3rd time now, when a team has a roster like BYU around a player like Jimmer, they tend to do exactly that, especially when they are as effecient with their shots/points as Fredette.

http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Mar 21, 2011 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

That ESPN line also has a PPS stat...

or points per shot. Jimmer is more effecient scoring than your boy Harrison Barnes, or big man John Henson (which shouldn’t be the case for a G vs a F or a #1 scoring option vs a 3rd or 4th as Henson is), and every single other Tar Heel except for the 7’ C Zeller (and again, considering where they shoot from, the C should be better than the G in that stat). But keep citing a way off % and claiming he’s an inefficient scorer. Better than 1.4 pts per shot from your primary offensive weapon, especially a perimeter oriented one like Fredette, is extremely good.

But please, let’s keep playing this game now that you need new excuses for busting on Jimmer.

Well, yeah, he is a Senior playing against inferior competition – I don’t doubt that he is a more efficient shooter than a freshman or sophomore playing against some of the tougher competition in the country.

Not to mention that Harrison Barnes of 2010 is not the Harrison Barnes of 2011

Carolina was terrible last season. There are quite a few guys who could have dropped 50 on them if they shot 20-30 shots per game.

The difference between Jimme and Walker and Barnes is that Walker and Barnes both play within a system that requires them to pass every now and then. If Walker or Barnes took wild, spin-around shots with 2 or 3 defenders on them, they would immediately be benched – even if they made the shot.

Let’s see what Jimmer does against some real teams next week.

Then cite Adam Morrison, Hasheem Thabeet, Darius Miles...

or countless other examples who’d better serve your point. Reddick is exactly what scouts thought he’d be, an undersized 2 who could be a solid bench player but likely lacked the length or athleticism to be a legit starter. Once you get out of the top 10, if not top 5 depending on the depth of the draft, it’s a crap shoot. Some do better than others, but outside of the top 5/10, you’re not getting guaranteed starters in the NBA draft.

That was a tough win against Michigan, too.

Of course I’m biased as a Mich fan, and it is hard to compare things in a vacuum, but I really think that Pitt would’ve lost to Michigan the way we played/Pitt played if the two teams had matched up. Today was a good example of the two ACC powerhouses doing what the Big East couldn’t: hold off pesky upset teams like Wash and Mich.

Anyways, main point: Big East is severely overrated. Time and again their mid level teams like Louisville and G’town get upset 1st round and their elite teams like Pitt sputter in round two/Sweet Sixteen. Most competitive =/= best: show me some championships and we’ll talk. Until then, it’s really a toss as to what is the best conference.

The ACC will also eliminate 1 of the remaining 2 schools in the round of 16, as well (UNC over Marquette), leaving only UConn. UConn should beat SDSU, and then we’ll see who they play the next game. Wow, VCU is determined to bust some brackets this year.

by TonyAlmeyda on Mar 20, 2011 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

In my opinion...

Purdue was overrated (finished season with losses to awful Iowa and erratic Michigan State). And Georgetown had the Wright injury to deal with.

Of course it’s a great run by VCU (assuming they don’t blow this), but part of it has to be because of the favorable draw.

by SnipeShot on Mar 20, 2011 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t follow college basketball anyway, so I didn’t know about either of those. I just go with my gut instinct.

Well...

in my main bracket I had Purdue, but that was mostly because I had upsets elsewhere and you can’t go overboard. At the same time, VCU winning doesn’t surprise me; VCU winning both games by double digit scores, however, does surprise me a little.

Duke. On one hand, them winning validates Michigan’s excellent game against them, and I have Duke winning it all in my bracket.

On the other hand, bleh. Duke. And Arizona has grown on me, too.

This will be only the second time I’ve rooted for Arizona in my life. The other time was the 2001 championship game. It cost me 250 in my bracket that year! Had to settle for second place and 50 bucks.

Singler is going to have to have to play great defensively to contain him.

Should we place a friendly wager on the game?? I was thinking, that since you hate Duke, if they win, you have to change your profile pic on TC to something Pro-Duke. Deal? (I won’t bother making a stipulation for myself, because I don’t foresee Duke losing)

If you were a "Zona fan back in 2005 you remember the greatest game of the decade. Illini down by 15 with 4 minutes left Deron Williams just tears it apart Illini come back in win in the best game I’ve ever seen. I talk about this because that is when "Zona had Salim Stoudimire one of my favorite college basketball players of all and Derrick Williams is the best player to come out of "Zona since Stoudimire hopefully hope you this time they beat The Huskies Kemba’s because I hate them and I’ve always been a Arizona fan, they are a timeless and classy organization. They have always been so exciting to watch especially with Salim and Channing Fry and Hassan Adams etc. But they have been a blast to watch even though they ruined my bracket(but at least it’ll be funner to watch so O can route for upsets)

Yeah very dissapointing season

The team had all the talent they could have with 3 seniors who started for 3 years but they were just so inconsistent. They’d go out beat Wisconsin then the next game lose to Minnesota or some other crap Big 10 team. They could play with any team in the country(played Kansas hard and played Ohio St. hard twice) but they were just so inconsistent

In another 2 years they should be good with Richardson, Brandon Paul, and Jereme Richmond(pending he doesn’t go pro), maybe they can pput it together then but next season I’m just hoping to make the tournement and maybe cause some late season magic/damage

Williams won’t rebound at the level Griffin does, but Williams can actually score outside of the paint.

Nice dunks...

his head is also 4-6 inches below where Griffin’s would be.

But good point in that unlike the two freaks I mentioned, Williams has more to his offense than just the jaw-dropping dunk.

Chose Arizona. Chose Kentucky. Chose Kansas.

As long as Kansas wins another, I think I’ll finish top three. If tthey go farther, I think I run away with it. dc_allday and a couple Tarheel fans are the only ones with a shot at catching me unless Kansas should lose.

Maybe I should pay less attention to college basketball every season…

Nice season for the Cats

It’s like my Zags. Did I see them even making the tournament mid-season? No. But they won the conference championship, won the conference tournament, then beat a really good St. John’s team. Great year and I can’t help but be proud of those guys. As for AZ, and Elite 8 is a major accomplishment. It’s too bad Derrick Williams will be in the NBA next year but your program is on the rise. Too bad, too cuz it means there is that much more recruiting competition on the West Coast :-)

Gotta really respect Mark Few for sticking with his program.

Yeah, I’d say it’s about 75/25 right now that DWill goes pro, but you never know. Sullinger staying for another season probably didn’t help us out, though. I just vote we skip football season and go right into basketball.

Top-5 depending on which publication you look at.

A 5-star point guard in Josiah Turner and 5-star shooting guard in Nick Johnson (both were the starting guards on the AAU Oakland Soliders, who were among the best in club ball). And then two 4-star big men in Sidiki Johnson and Angelo Chol. Johnson was Sean Miller’s first recruit to commit back in early ‘09, and Chol was a late signee who’s California’s all-time blocks leader.

Turner and Johnson both top 100 on ESPN

and I saw Chol was 60 something. Damn impressive class along with St. Johns has a rediculous class, UK as always with Caliparii being a cheating bastard, aand Duke is the clear winner with Rivers. Not that I think he’s the best player but he’s going to stay 3-4 years and become a college star because he has no need to rush to the NBA

My Illini have a depth class, 4 in top 100 but the highest we have is Mycheal Henry who is 77th, but we hit a homerun with Jereme Richmond last year kid’s gonna be a stud

I wouldn’t really use ESPN, but yeah, both team’s have really impressive classes. Pretty sure Rivals is releasing an updated list in the next few weeks. I’ll be looking forward to that.

And Where did you see this? Weber is a great coach who gets a ton of Illinois products and consistly gets a top 30 class. Heck the guy took a 7’1 goon in Mike Tisdale and made him a shooter and a very good big man(who I would take a risk on in the 2nd round of the draft, he’s 7’1 already has a shot but is thin as a twig, but some meat on him and he could be a helluva player)

In both my brackets...

Here and in the work money bracket, I’m guaranteed a third-place finish in both. 781st in the Yahoo overall rankings. I was in the 99th percentile at 3,000, so they had to have at least 300k brackets entered.

On ours, if Kentucky wins, dc_allday wins. If UCONN wins, ROBravo wins. If neither team wins (aka Butler/VCU upsettage), I win.

My work bracket is nearly the same, ’cept I win if Kentucky wins. Two other people can win, one if UCONN wins it all, the other if UCONN reaches the finals but loses.

What I’m trying to say is that it’s pretty freaking hard to win, even when you actually kill it and nail 6 of 8 Elite 8s and half of the Final Four.

Damn you, Kansas.
