Atlanta Braves Make First Spring Training Roster Cuts
From the Braves press room comes the first round of spring training roster cuts:
The Atlanta Braves trimmed their spring roster by 14 players today, optioning four players and re-assigning 10 others. Right-handed pitcher Erik Cordier and left-handed pitchers Lee Hyde and Jose Ortegano were optioned to Gwinnett (AAA), while right-handed pitcher Randall Delgado was optioned to Mississippi (AA).
The 10 players who were re-assigned to minor league camp include right-handed pitchers Michael Broadway, Jay Sborz, Julio Teheran and Arodys Vizcaino, left-handed pitcher Brett Oberholtzer, catchers Christian Bethancourt, Braeden Schlehuber and Jesus Sucre, infielder Tyler Pastornicky and outfielder Mycal Jones.
Not many surprises, though I thought Hyde might stay around longer. Delgado, Oberholtzer, Teheran, and Vizcaino would have probably stayed around longer, but they need to start stretching their arms out to start. Sborz never really got a chance, did he? Would have like to have seen salt and pepper (Pastornicky and Jones) stay around a little longer too. That's a lot of players for a first cut, more than I remember in years past, though maybe I'm misremembering.
MTM tomorrow.

I liked Oberholtzer
I was hoping he would get to pitch some more this spring, but i’m sure we’ll see a good bit of him next year.
"It happens to everybody, man. He's had 60 at-bats. A couple of years ago, I had 60 at-bats, and I was hitting .170, and everyone was ready to kill me, too. And what happened? Laser show." - Dustin Pedroia

that left handed pitcher Lee Hyde
has talent that can’t be denied
but he’s off to Gwinnett
he ain’t got there yet
when he does he’ll strike out the side.
jose's ok...
ok for Jose Ortegano
who moonlights at the the piano
at the park when it’s slow
he’s the first one to go
at hitters, mano a mano.
I wasn’t aware he still moonlighted at the piano..
Lady: What?!? How did HE get to Heaven?
GOD: Oh, he was in a different area code, so technically it wasn't cheating..

You’ll drink to anything.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

I'll drink to your reply
I went and got a bottle of bourbon this afternoon just to prove you right. Cheers!
Soooo.....
Where does Teheran end up starting the season? I think he’s ready for Mississippi. Arodys probably starts off the season in High A ball since I don’t think he’s ever pitched above Low A. It might be he and Oberholtzer leading that staff.
I thought the Holy Triad were all going to Mississippi, but I could be wrong.

I feel bad for whoever plays some of our minor league teams
We are sooooooo stacked
Kind of surprised that Jones and Pastornicky aren’t sticking around a little longer.
OT:
I was looking at Fangraphs fielding data from last season and noticed that Kelly Johnson had a 7.7 UZR/150 at 2B last season. My mind is blown.
Q: If not us, who? If not now, when? A: The Batman. And "when you least expect it."
What's the difference between "optioned to AA" and "reassigned to minor league camp?"
Clearly they are different as otherwise the team would not have been so specific in the announcement, but for those not in the know, what is the practical difference between these two categories? I would think that “optioned to AA” means that a player is going to AA – which right now, doesn’t that mean spring training camp? Or is AA/AAA spring training handled on a completely different basis than MLB’s training camp?
The optioned players are on the 40 Man Roster, the others are not.
Q: If not us, who? If not now, when? A: The Batman. And "when you least expect it."
You only get 3 years of being optioned to boot. After that you get waived, which means another team can claim you. Why Mather will be given every change, he’s out of options.
Sometimes this leads to funny stuff- like Wren realizing 50-yr old Julio Franco had options left and sent him down to the minors for a couple of days to free up roster space.
Thanks, that helps a lot. I knew what optioned meant, and in fact I knew enough about what that meant several years ago to rush over to the ball park in Richmond to see JF play one night. But it didn’t occur to me that these were those same options, and I was focusing on what those players would be doing next – I guess that from a practical matter they are just playing on a different field during spring training? Of course with the knowledge that they aren’t playing in MLB on opening day.
They have seperate minor league games during spring training...
I’d think the move just clears space on one field for the big leaguers and their coaches, while the minor leaguers and their coaches slide over to the backfields.
