Braves Spring Training Game 3

Time to hold a lead. The Astros are always good for a win, right? Today's lineup:

  1. Martin Prado, LF
  2. Nate McLouth, CF
  3. Chipper Jones, DH
  4. Brian McCann, C
  5. Dan Uggla, 2B
  6. Jason Heyward, RF
  7. Alex Gonzalez, SS
  8. Eric Hinske, 1B
  9. Brandon Hicks, 3B

Today's starting pitcher for the Braves will be Derek Lowe. He will be followed by Scott Linebrink, George Sherrill, Cory Gearrin, Athony Varvaro, Juan Abreu, and Brett Oberholtzer.

FYI, I'm aware of the script warnings that some of you are getting on TC. I have notified support and they are attempting to correct the issue. Sorry for the popups or virus warnings.

Same here. The good (?) news is McLouth will probably suck too much in spring training to earn a spot at the top of the line up once the real games start. But no way should Heyward bat so low in the order.

Why will McLouth probably suck? Is it because he had 3 good years and 1 bad year?

Only justification would be if people think Schafer has a better chance to succced, which is something I have a hard time grasping.

Three years from now is a long time to wait for Schafer-we’d be much happier, I think, if he were ready for a full-time job next year.

I’m talking about being able to out-produce an average McLouth year, not necessarily be ready for MLB.

I know.

Call me overly optimistic, but I want career years out of every player on our team, from Lowe, McLouth and AGon to Heyward, McCann, and Hanson. Rooting for failure as a Braves fan doesn’t mesh with me.

Now, I can root for the failure of all the other teams (unless they are playing the Phils).

We’re still a week from Opening Day, let’s not get too worked up yet. Struggling baseball players are a fickle breed (McLouth) and perhaps Fredi just wants to give him some confidence.

Yea

I know it’s spring training, but Freddi has talked about Heyward hitting 6th before. Why you want Nate McLouth getting more at bats in a game than Jason Heyward is beyond me. Even if Nate bounces back and returns to the player we got from Pittsburgh, he still should not be hitting before JHey.

McLouth from ‘07-’09 .265/.353/.467, 116 OPS+. Martin Prado from ‘08-’10 .309/.358/.461, 118 OPS+.
Interchangeable if Nate is right. This isn’t about Nate not being worthy, it is about Heyward being so much more worthy than anyone on the team.

This.

That being said, I don’t think McLouth and Prado are quite interchangeable. The stats are the same, but McLouth ran up his numbers in Pittsburgh, which has a home park that is very friendly to left-handed power. Even if McLouth returns to form, Prado is still probably the better bet.

by cavebird on Feb 28, 2011 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

Even if his power dropped a bit, his ISO is much higher. His speed also is an addition to the top of the lineup. I know almost every Braves fan loves Prado and rightfully so, but if McLouth does come back and hits like he is capable he is probably a better fit at the leadoff spot than Martin but it really is close and hardly matters.

Twitter: @Ben_Duronio Stop calling Tommy Hanson "Big Red" -- This is the cause I support the most.

by BenDuronio on Feb 28, 2011 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

If McLouth can get on base at a .350 clip I’d like him leadoff, but as far as a speed difference between he and Prado, does it matter if we run the same way as last year and, generally, the last few years? I don’t see the SB as part of our game.

by goesbetterwithbeer on Feb 28, 2011 1:08 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I think Fredi is more prone to SB and McLouth is a solid threat. He stole 12 with the Braves in ’09

by BenDuronio on Feb 28, 2011 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

Again

I’d love Heyward in the 2-hole, but on the roll call of “Things That Matter,” batting order is very far on the low end. Much more concerning to me is the infield depth.

by Bronn on Feb 28, 2011 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

It’s more a sign of me not liking what Gonzalez offers than the actual construction of the lineup. He’s looking more old school than Bobby did last year…

Twitter: @Ben_Duronio Stop calling Tommy Hanson "Big Red" -- This is the cause I support the most.

by BenDuronio on Feb 28, 2011 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

I also don't like what Gonzalez offers

But in this game, I’m referring to a shortstop instead of a manager. I think that guy is going to have more effect on our run values than the batting order.

Where Fredi can really screw up is in who he’s putting on the field, moreso than when is their turn to bat. Maybe you’re afraid that we might have a situation where McLouth has a line like .246/.335/.412 and Schafer has a .275/.300/.370 line, and Fredi defaults to playing the guy with the higher batting average (or any other situation like this). That’s something to be worried about, but I also think he’s cleverer than that.

by Bronn on Feb 28, 2011 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

I'm confused.

Why is batting a player like Heyward too low in the line-up “old school”? I can’t imagine that in the golden era of baseball, managers routinely batted their best players in the 6th spot or lower.

While it’s early, and I don’t want to knock Gonzalez before he’s even coached a game that means something, I find it head-scratching, not old school. I still have a feeling Heyward will not start the season in the 6th spot—there’s no logical reason to do so.

I am a fan of the Dawgs, Falcons, and Braves...oh...and tacos, but I like the other three more.

Hey all

Been in uber lurk mode during ST but I have a question – how high do you guys think Prado’s ceiling is? His work ethic really seems outstanding and his line drive swing bodes well for challenging for the batting title into the foreseeable future. I feel as though we have our own underrated Dustin Pedroia on the Braves roster. Just idle speculation, but what sort of outlook does everyone have for Prado over the next decade?

Nick Punto? He averaged 1 fWAR for every 212 at bats over the last three years and the Cardinals just signed him for 700k.

By next year Escobar will be paid ~$3.5M and we’ll be able to find someone for less who won’t be that much worse.

I don’t love the Escobar trade, but we did also get Collins (whom we wasted) and Pastornicky.

by chriti04 on Feb 28, 2011 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

Umm…we’ll have a lot of money next off-season with McLouth, KK, Gonzalez and possibly Chipper off the books.

Jose Reyes and Jimmy Rollins aren’t perfect fits, but they’ll both be available and we could afford them (assuming neither have a monster season and drive their price up way too high). We also have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball, and we could always make a trade.

I didn’t really bring up Yunel. I brought up the fact that the trade will screw us at the SS position for 2-3 years.

Yunel was working out in Atlanta, quite nicely, actually. He was one of the top 3 defensive SS in the game and one of the most promising offensive ones.

But, I guess when you look up into the scorer’s box because you disagree with a ruling, you gotta go. That costs wins more than an inability to hit does.

You can't really count on spring numbers carrying over to the regular season...

…but given that his complete garbage in spring last year did carry over, this has to be a good sign. I think he has produced more in spring already than he did in the entire spring last year.

Yeah. It’s not about the numbers. It’s about the approach and the confidence for him.

I think in his case, success will breed success.

And now, a SB can only make us smile.

Here’s what the Rumors section says about Utley:

The Philadelphia Phillies will start the Grapefruit League schedule without second baseman Chase Utley, who had an MRI Saturday that resulted in a diagnosis of patellar tendonitis. Utley will sit out of spring games until the knee is no longer giving him problems.

If the 32-year-old Utley can’t shake the injury and the Phillies have to start the regular season without him — remember, it’s just four weeks away — the candidates to replace Utley for any length of time include Brian Bocock and Wilson Valdez.

Non-roster invitees Pete Orr, Robb Quinlan and Josh Barfield may also have a shot, and Placido Polanco could slide over to second base.

Utley isn’t expected to miss that much time, but tendonitis issues tend to linger like hamstring problems. Keep an eye out.
