Braves Announce Full List Of Non-Roster Invitees
The Atlanta Braves announced their full list of non-roster invitees today:
NON-ROSTER INVITEES (20)
PITCHERS (8): RHP Michael Broadway, LHP Johan Flande, RHP Kenshin Kawakami, RHP Rodrigo Lopez,
LHP Brett Oberholtzer, RHP Jay Sborz, RHP Julio Teheran and RHP Arodys Vizcaino.
CATCHERS (5): Christian Bethancourt, J.C. Boscan, Wilkin Castillo, Braeden Schlehuber and Jesus Sucre.
INFIELDERS (3): Shawn Bowman, Ed Lucas and Tyler Pastornicky.
OUTFIELDERS (4): Brent Clevlen, Jose Constanza, Mycal Jones and Wilkin Ramirez.
No one on here that we really didn't think would be coming anyway. Good to see both Teheran and Vizcaino get an invite, as well as Oberholtzer. Bethancourt gets an invite because they need catchers; hopefully this helps his development to be around the big league camp.

Ed Lucas is my sleeper pick to play a big role in 2011
Great OBP, great versatility, decent power. He seems like a good guy to have on the bench.
I'm all jacked up on Mountain Dew
Agreed. I really think we’ll see him or Matty Young turn into Omar Infante 2.0.

Doesn’t really seem like a sleeper at this point, at least around here.

i think Betancourt should work exclusively with our nastiest pitchers….isn’t the only knock on him his blocking skills…make him block the nasty stuff Kimbrel throws and he’ll figure it out eventually…or not whatever itll be fun to watch…really i just want someone to try to steal off him, be it in a minor league game or practice I don’t care I just want it to happen
"No. Lonely people mixing with one another? Breeding? Creating an even lonelier generation? You're not even allowing natural selection do its work. Pssh. You're like the guy who invented the seat belt."
Dwight Schrute
sounds risky if u mean in the majors..
i do, howeverl, like the idea of him working with vizcaino, teheran, and Delgado in the minors
I think he is talking about...
…in Spring Training.
Bethancourt has already caught games for both Vizcaino and Teheran in Rome. Then again for Vizcaino at the end of the season (again with Rome) and also in instructional ball after the regular season is over. In addition, all four of the above attended the Rookie Camp a couple of weeks ago at Turner Field. They will all be good combinations. Spring training’s gonna be awesome.
Most excited about...
Teheran and Vizcaino, but Bethancourt, Lucas, and Wilkin Ramirez should be interesting to watch.
Dunno why Wilkin Ramirez interests me so much…maybe it’s the whole former blue-chip prospect from another organization that’s causing it. If he can somehow get it figured out and reach his potential, I think he could be an interesting addition. I expect ST to temper my hopes a bit, though…

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
I will just be happy...
…if Vizcaino stays healthy. Elbow ligament injuries that are not surgically repaired scare the crap out of me.
I wanna say he had injuries cut short both years on the Yankees farm two...
3 consecutive seasons ending injured scares the crap out of me even more than the unrepaired elbow ligament.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
I don’t think he had anything his first year but his second year was cut short by a back injury. A lot of it could be the stress of a baseball season combined with a kid who’s not finished growing yet.

wonder if Wilkin is just about to turn 25?

Mycal Jones
Think it’s a mistake that he’s listed as an outfielder? Or could the Braves have some plans to use him out there?
I believe he’s moving to the OF this year.
by king of games on Feb 2, 2011 4:29 PM EST up reply actions
I think they plan is to make him as versatile as possible
so that if his bat sticks, he could play whatever position that we happen to need at the time. Or he could be a +backup at several positions like Omar Infante was for us. He doesn’t have the best arm and his OBP has been a little low, but he’s got some pop and speed.

seems to me that it has more to do with his 43 errors in 125 games at ss last year

Oh KK...
A non-roster invitee… Also what about Beau Torbert?

and Randall Delgado? seems surprising that both Arodys Vizcaino and Brett Oberholtzer were included and Randall Delgado wasn’t.
I had the same question…he’s already on the 40-man roster.

Do you think he breaks camp with the team?
Morgan: Do you think I could come into the clubhouse after the game and display my ass for both those veterans and the younger guys?
Baker: Well, Joe, you are on the payroll of the team, and you're a legend, so I suppose — holy shit!
[Joe has appeared next to Dusty, in the dugout, completely naked]
Morgan: Hey.
Honestly I don’t think there’s room unless somebody is hurt. There are seven spots and you’ve got Moylan, O’Flaherty, Venters, Linebrink, Sherrill, and Proctor all assured of spots. And while he’s not assured of a spot Kimbrel would pretty much have to implode in ST not to win the final spot.

Proctor isn't much to eat though if he does poorly...
or even more likely, one of the 7 tweaks something in the spring, starts the year on the DL and there he goes.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
This.
If he isn’t ready, we might as well just cut our losses and let Marek or Martinez be the last man.

I may be mistaken
but I had heard Proctor’s contract was not guaranteed, meaning that if he doesn’t break camp out of spring then he doesn’t make the major league salary.
everything i've read....
indicates it was guaranteed, and he goes through waivers before we can send him down.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
What do you think
the contract situation would be if Proctor fell into a bottomless hole and ended up in another dimension? Would we still be on the hook?
Only if he turns back up, Ozzie Smith never did...

May be a dumb question
But Randall Delgado isn’t listed here because he’s already on the 40 man, right? So he’s no longer “non roster”.
I'm all jacked up on Mountain Dew
Go JC Boscan!
Go USA, Braves, BU Terriers, Irish, Caps, Colts, Hoyas, NU Cats, Wizards, DC United, Washington Freedom
BU Hockey: National Champions 1971, 1972, 1978, 1995, 2009
Hey!!!
What happened with Delgado? The three headed monster (Teheran, Vizcaino, and Delgado) should be in camp together…
by elMac on Feb 2, 2011 6:05 PM EST via mobile reply actions
they will be
and if it were up to me, they would pitch in the same games…
if they each pitch 2 innings in a game, they can be competing with eachother and it would be hot and awesome to watch.. i know those would be the ST games I’d go to
throw minor in there with them or beachy
then let kimbrel close that bitch
Ehhh
I’d rather put them 1,2,3,4, (Teheran, Minor, Vizcaino or Delgado) with Kimbrel closing and Venters setting up…spread them out so the Braves can have a shut down rotation for years to come….plus mix in Hanson and the future is bright in the Atl :)

I feel sorry for Michael Broadway
if he ever makes it to the bigs every time he gives up a hit the announcers is going to say something like, “well that one was right down Broadway”. If he has one bad season thats what everyone on here will call him too, Michael “Right Down” Broadway.

anyone else who hadn't checked out ed lucas' minor league stats...
should do so.. damn, if he can play any kinda decent SS, he could be our guy..
ed lucas:

diory Hernandez

here’s Hicks
http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=hicks-001bra
Looks like Lucas has better numbers than any of them. I would imagine that if One is just vastly superior with the glove, they will start the season with the team as a defensive backup—but the moment gonzalez has to sit a game, they will call up the better hitter.
How good is Lucas with the glove?
You have to also think, if he or Diory hit well enough in ST, they are making the team regaurdless their gloves.
We basically had Lucas
for a very long time. Decent average, high OBP, low power utility type named Wes Timmons, who never saw any time at the major league level and is now in the Athletics’ organization.
Lucas minor league slash is .286/.362/.400, and Timmons’ .276/.387/.382.
He was a similar hitter...
But couldn’t really play shortstop, had he had more aptitude up the middle he might have gotten a call up.
http://tarpslides-r-us.blogspot.com/
i don't really like minor league slash lines
when you are talking about a developing player
I like to look at how they played in the last year or two… And if there is a big jump, there is a big jump for a reason. Minor leaguers are making breakthroughs as ball players, so i hate blending in A and AA stats a lot of times
timmons doesnt play short stop at all
this is a big difference.. what’s the point of bringing up lucas?
what we need is a guy that can play short stop
From 06-10 Lucas played 38 games at shortstop, so it’s not exactly like he’s a sure thing there.

www.dropoutproductions.com
for sure
but timmons doesn’t play there at all and we need a SS badly..
best case scanario diory translates to the majors this year
Given his lack of playing time at SS in the minors...
…with the Royals who didn’t have a decent shortstop in the majors or the minors (so they got one in the Greinke trade), I would imagine that he is pretty bad defensively at SS. If he was even half-way decent with the glove at short or probably even second, he would have been called up instead of let go by the Royals.
And next time...
…I’ll read the post right below the one I make first, and avoid feeling silly for saying the same thing.
I didn’t realize how big he is. Listed at 6’3" 205. So either he’s a little skinny or he’s put on weight since that listing was made (most times the weight is off).

I'd be curious to know
if Lucas is really considered much of a fielder. He spent a very long time with Kansas City, who have not exactly been rich at the short stop department for the last several years.
i would be curious about that too
but he played more games at SS last year than 2b and 3b (but maybe that was because they wanted to give him a long look there because we need it)
The reality is that Omaha probably had a vacancy at short for a little while and it was easier to play Lucas there than to go sign somebody. It was the first time he’d played SS since he played 2 games there in 08.
I think we should temper the excitement about him as a hitter. He’s spent most of his career playing in hitter’s leagues. The PCL, Cal League, and Texas League are all havens for batters. The guy’s never really been a regular, he’s been moved all over the field. I don’t doubt he’s going to be a valuable player for Gwinnett this year, and may even find his way up to Atlanta at some point, but let’s not set ourselves up for disappointment.

Out of curiosity, what makes Texas, California and the PCL friendly to batters? What defines a “hitter’s league”?
LIVE EST
Tape-delayed for the West Coast
Yes and yes. Those are the big factors, tons of elevation. Those leagues have traditionally played as hitters leagues while the International League, Southern League, Eastern League, Carolina League, and Florida State League have all been traditionally pitcher’s leagues.
