Blue Jays Interested In Braves' Prado
Add the Blue Jays to the list of teams interested in Atlanta Braves left fielder/third baseman/second baseman Martin Prado. From a Ken Rosenthal tweet at the Winter Meetings:
I get it, the Braves want someone who can hit the ball hard and long, and I guess they don't care about other parts of their offensive (or defensive) game. Don't the Braves already have that in Dan Uggla? They seem fixated on the thumper aspect. It would be strange if three-fourths of the Jays infield were former Braves -- add in Kelly Johnson, if they re-sign him.

If the Braves weren’t so obsessed with the “thumper aspect” they wouldn’t be trying to trade Prado in the first place.
I hear the Jays have a decent young SS, though he may have some attitude problems and a bad fashion consultant.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

I'm still holding out hope for Stephen Drew for obvious reasons

Speaking of mistakes from the 2006-07 offseason, the Cubs are getting a bit of interest in left fielder Alfonso Soriano, tweets SI’s Jon Heyman. Soriano, 35, is owed $54MM through 2014 and has a full no-trade clause. I think the Cubs would have to eat over $40MM to move Soriano.
That would leave ~4.6 mil a year left max. Per WAR he was worth 12 mil in ’10 and 5.9 last yr. His LF D is above average and hit 26 hrs last yr.
i got the opposite impression on his defense
Chopmaster: my link is my dad who has watched the braves since I don’t know. he’s 56.
Saw that too.
If we could get him cheap-both in terms of $ and what we have to give up, that’s certainly an option.
Unless Wren is about to pull the blockbuster of the year and fleece the Jays for Jose Bautista
which is highly unlikely at best, I don’t see us matching up with them at all. I suppose we could try to get Colby Rasmus from them, but it would seem odd for the Jays to send him out after just acquiring him.

I'd have interest
in Travis Snider. Not as the main piece of the trade, but as a part of it. Maybe one of those “change of scenery” type of deals for him…Don’t the Jays have Adeiny Hechavarria in the minors? I know he isn’t a “one-year” buffer till Simmons is ready, but besides Jason Barlett who is?
"If it's F'd up then it's F'd up" --- Gregg Marshall
I like Snider but...
I much rather have someone we trust, we already have too many hit or miss guys in our lineup as it is. Bautista would be amazing and to be honest I wouldn’t mind throwing a few good pitchers their way for him. However I’m not really itching to get rid of Prado anyway…in fact why does everyone want to get rid of him so bad, he is easily one of the best hitters on our team.

We would trade anyone if it made the team better.

Well ya I understand that but...
everyone is really pushing him out the door, trading one of our best hitters isn’t necessarily going to make us better. As many prospects as we have why wouldn’t we just trade them for a “thumper” left fielder if that’s really what we want.
by Falconzfan284 on Dec 5, 2011 2:12 PM EST up reply actions
Nobody is pushing him out the door. All of the rumors are speculation and due diligence. He’s not going to be moved unless someone overpays for him.

I have no problem with this philosophy
but the rumors of a Prado for Seth Smith + CF prospect, for example, don’t seem to make the team better IMO

I know
To me, it seems like all the speculation on moving Prado is based on the fact that we have Matt Diaz, and if we can get someone to platoon with him, that takes care of LF. That’s not something I’m buying. I would rather have Prado out there everyday. Just one man’s opinion though.

by wpf3211 on Aug 6, 2011 9:11 PM EDT
No. You trade Prado because you want to improve his position. The trade involving Prado doesn’t necessarily have to bring back the player that will represent the sought after improvement, because by simply removing his salary, along with Jurrjens’ potentially, we will then be able to afford said player.
We can’t just sign somebody or trade for an expensive player. Money has to be moved around first. And it has nothing to do with Matt Diaz.
This is my corn. You people are guests in my corn.
That makes the team better long-term...
A Smith/Diaz platoon works for 2012, Wheeler/Blackmon would provide 5-6 years of service in CF. There’s also a possibility that Smith has been mis-platooned, as his minor league numbers didn’t have a huge detrimental split against LHP and he’s only received about 200 PA against LHP in his career. Smith also has an extra year of service time besides.
Unless you’re looking to sign Bourn long-term, an expensive and somewhat risky proposition, the deal definitely improves the teams chances in 2013 and beyond.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
I think we want Wheeler and the Rockies won't give him up
and that’s why that deal hasn’t been made. I’m not sold on Blackmon being anything more than a 4th outfielder.

by wpf3211 on Aug 6, 2011 9:11 PM EDT
I think about the same. Good deal long-term. A lot of the Rockies fans like Wheeler, but some have Blackmon ahead of of him. I dunno, but I do like Wheeler’s power out of the CF spot. Will probably destroy CO Springs next season, which could raise his value even more.

Yeah, that's a crappy deal
I wouldn’t mind trading Prado, and he might be our best bet to move someone to improve the team, but a deal like that doesn’t do much.
My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.
by willlinn on May 17, 2011 2:13 PM EDT
The Blue Jays are still very high on Snider. I doubt they would trade him for Prado alone. Also, Hechavarria is looking more and more like a bust.
Maybe
They’d get the best package possible from Toronto and then flip part of it in a 3-way trade? But again, who has a SS that’s on the market for a year besides the Fathers? No me gusta Jason Barlett!

Pirates have no reason to trade him

by JonnyBravesFan on Dec 5, 2011 8:15 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Except that they are very young, and don’t really expect to compete before he becomes expensive. I think it depends on the Pirates belief on whether he will sign a long term deal or not. If he doesn’t want to, then trade him for some stud prospects to go with the very promising prospects they have now.
Not saying it will happen, just more of a pipe dream for a lot of us.
Not until we trade for Kemp, too.

I imagine the Jays are looking at Prado for 3B...
so that JB can move back to RF where he probably belongs. I swear, unless the return is Rasmus-like I just don’t see how this is a good fit. You lose quality PA’s at 3B in Chipper’s absence.
Of course, you would start a literal “track meet” in the OF in 2012 with Colby Rasmus, Michael Bourn, and Jason Heyward as your 7, 8, and 9 position players…and have Rasmus available to move to CF if we trade away Bourn at the 2012 deadline.

Still open to bringing in a veteran SS
but they like Pastornicky, and seems unlikely they will add a major FA for that position. They like the speed and athleticism he would bring to the team

Prado, Jurrjens, Vizcaino, Betancourt, Terdo for Bautista. Would that even come close?

How about this...
I’m too lazy to look, but assuming we can afford Bautista’s contract, the folks at Capitol had a pretty good idea. The Jay’s are looking hard for an affordable closer. How about: Jurrjens, Prado, Venters for Bautista?

Nope
Even if the Jays were willing to trade Bautista (they aren’t) that package wouldn’t come close. Think more along the lines of Hanson, Teheran, Bethancourt, Medlen and Prado. In other words, the Braves would need to strip their roster to get him.

I get the mocking reference to "thumper", but...
we do need more slugging and higher OPS from the outfield. Of course, we’ll have that if JHey comes back up to his potential next year, and Prado doesn’t get more weird injuries.
