Carlos Beltran?
I am curious if Braves fans are satisfied with our roster? I understand we have great depth at pitching, some quality hitters and a chance to make the playoffs next season. The Marlins are not going to jump us with their flury of signings, although it has made them a more formitable team. I just feel that we need another quality bat to get us over the hump. I wish the owners would eat the salary for a bigger contract this season, knowing that Chipper and his $14 million will be off of the books next season, as well as Derek Lowe. Getting a player like Josh Willingham (who was most likely just signed) or Seth Smith is no where near what we need. There career numbers are average at best and niether has had a season worth remembering.
I would like to see the Braves approach a player like Carlos Beltran. You could offer him 2 yrs for $16-20 million. He still has production left in him and would be a great addition to our lineup. It would also help Heyward develop, since he wouldn't be the focal point of our "new" 2012 team. It could add depth, experience and power (all of which is needed on our team). Let me know what you think and give an opinion about any potential free agents?

Where Carlos Beltran’s name has been specifically mentioned.
My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

I was just trying to ask something relevant for a discussion. We need more power on our team, that is pretty obvious.
So obvious it’s already been covered in the rosterbation thread.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

No, we do not
The Braves were third in the league in HRs last year. Power is not our problem…plate discipline is. This is why I don’t like to see the rumor that we are looking for a bopper for OF.

Out of all of the names mentioned (Smith , Young , Jones , Alonso )
none of them really sound like what Wren has been quoted to be looking for . But where could you find that elusive RH batting LFer who is young and has some years of team control left ? He’s not in the FA market .
I’m gonna go through every team and see who exactly I would think might fit the bill on what Wren has stated he is looking for . Feel free to comment your thoughts on each and wether we would even match up well enough to consider them .
1) Allen Craig – Cards – He’s 27 , hit 11 HR’s in 200 PA’s with a good OBP (.362) . He may be hard to get with Poo-holes now in LA .
2) Drew Stubbs – Reds – Like his potential , but K’s quite a bit . I kinda like Heisey over Stubbs .
3) J. D. Martinez – Astros – Big question mark here . His career minor league stats are great (1261 PA’s / .342 BA / .407 OBP / .551 SLG) , but hasn’t spent any time in AAA .
4) Jerry Sands – Dodgers – Tremendous minor league power numbers (1501 PA’s , 93 HR’s , .576 SLG) , BA wasn’t bad (.286) , but not great . He did have a decent career minor league OBP at .376 . But he has had 198 big league PA’s and hasn’t had near the same production , but it is a small sample size .
5) Dayan Viciedo – White Sox – Very young , very raw . His last year in the mnors was his best with a slash line of .296 / .364 / .491 with 20 HR’s . He has a small sample size with just 3 years but has started most of that and has 1408 PA’s (868 in AAA) . The first two years of the three , his OBP was .317 and .308 . But greatly improved last year at .364 .
6) Wil Myers – Royals – Everyone has already discussed Myers and Wren has made it clear to the Royals that he wants him . His minors slash line – .296 / .399 / .477 .
7) Mike Trout – Angels – Again , everyone knows about this guy and the skills he would bring . Minor league slash line of .338 / .422 / .508 .
8) Michael Taylor – Athletics – Decent numbers in the minors . Caeer minor league slash line – .296 / .371 / .476 .
9) Trayvon Robinson – Mariners – Another player who can do a little bit of everything and is a switch hitter . BA is not great but shows good patience , speed and power . His career slash line in the minors – .283 / .358 / .435 . The career .435 SLG is low compared to his 2 full seasons in AAA (.552 & .563) .
I may have missed a few players from the lists . I tried to stay within what I felt was logical for what Wren said he was looking for , the young LF RHed team controlled thumper . Personally I have no preference so long as it makes our team better . I also understand that some of these players are probably off limits . But anything is possible .
Remember...
…that the minor league numbers of some of the west coast guys (Sands, Robinson) are inflated due to playing in the PCL and the Cal League at times in their careers. Hitters parks everywhere in those leagues.
Yeah
I have heard that a few times . After sleeping on it , several of the players I went through last night had decent numbers , but played in some of those ‘hitter friendly’ parks . The two that did stand out that I read about and liked were Dayan Viciedo (White Sox) and Trayvon Robinson . Robinson especially . Switch hitter with speed and power . And he plays for the Mariners who we could probably make a trade with . They need help in several different positions . And we need that young OF thumper that Wren is looking for . But it looks like he plays decent defense and has proven in the minors that he can steal bases . In 6 minor league seasons he has stole 150 out of 217 . The scary part would be that he did play in the PCL league last year when he put up 26 HR’s in 428 PA’s .
That's the problem with Robinson.
The speed is real, but I am not sure that the power is. And the power is more important than the speed.
Also, I’m sure that people will be able to contribute a flurry of contradictory statements to this—but aren’t teams generally super-hesitant to trade away young, cost-controlled players that can contribute at the ML level?
Usually you see trades of the tiers of players either above or below those guys on the development scale—either guys that are already established stars/regulars/roster pieces or prospects with very little to no big league exposure. I can’t remember the last time a young cost-controlled guy was really in play, because teams usually want to see what they have with those guys when they’re so close to primetime.

I’m pretty satisfied with what we’ve got. I’m happy with Prado in LF and backing up Chipper, Pastornicky at SS should be ok despite not having a cannon arm, Simmons will take over eventually.
If I were Wren, I’d sign a good MI backup and use Constanza as CF backup. If he can do better than Constanza at a reasonable cost, that’s cool too.
Mid-season, when we have an idea about Huddy’s back, Jurrjens knee, Hanson’s shoulder, Heyward’s swing and Pastornicky’s defense, I’d trade a pitcher for whatever the biggest need seems to be. MLB ready or prospects, whatever is the best deal.
"First!"...Who gives a damn if you are first
i think thats right
we have pieces to bring back a superstar
but we dont know where we will really need one yet
Beltran’s a great fit, but apparently he can get 3/40 on the open market. He’s not worth that for this club.
The market on Beltran has been eerily quite, which make me think he has an offer in hand and I hope it’s the Braves.
Here’s my theory; the Braves can’t mention they are interested in or have signed Beltran before they trade Prado or Prado’s value to the Braves will be decreased and his subsequent trade value decreased. Once Wren finds a deal he likes for Prado, Beltran will become the Braves’ target.
Some times you have to take risks and for the next two years Beltran is worth it. I would give him a 2/$22 mm offer with a team option 3rd year @ $11 mm or a $3 mm buyout.
His market has actually picked up the last couple days. It will pick up even more once Cuddyer signs.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Cuddyer a Rockie (Rocky?)
Cuddyer is off the board to Colorado. Willingham already signed by the Twins. Two interesting points in the Braves (possible) search for a left fielder:
1) The Rockies now have greater incentive to move Seth Smith (who now is without a position and the Braves were rumored to be connected to); and
2) the list of Beltran suitors just got smaller. Perhaps Beltran’s asking price comes down as other corner outfielders come off the market before him.
couple of thoughts on that
1. Beltran – he’s still the biggest bat on the board. I really don’t see his price wavering much… whatever that may be. I still expect he wants something in excess of 3yr/$40m. My fear is that the Phillies end up with him, replacing Ibanez.
2. The Rox just blocked Blackmon, Smith, and Wheeler for at least 3 years. I would expect that 2 of those guys are now available. I want Wheeler… anything else is a bonus.
"Sir Stealth, Stay stealth.. Your a moron" (jrod1142), 12/15/11 (the epic FWren Fortitude FanPost)
I realize there are some inherent downsides with a guy like Beltran, but despite the risk, it seems relatively safe, particularly because he would not block an outfield prospect, nor would he cost a draft pick. I wonder if he’d be more inclined to return to the NL East, a place where he knows the pitchers, the teams, and the parks.
I realize Wren likes to fly under the radar, and rarely is he connected with a deal before making it. However, I like the idea of the Braves with a guy like Beltran in left, and Prado playing the utility role. I just don’t see how you trade Prado. Simply put, he’s too valuable to the team. I do think you can improve over what he brings to the outfield, though.
Prado is not too valuable to trade...
…if he is only playing 90-100 games a year. He is a great guy to have on the bench—-so great, however, that he should be starting, and if we don’t have a position for him to start, his biggest value is as a trade chip.
Gotta wonder what Rox are thinking trade wise...
I’m with you, Wheeler would be a great get if in fact we can’t extend Bourn which is unlikely considering we don’t like working with Boras. AND, Smith is no slouch, especially his splits against righties 384AB 14HR’s .299/.365/.463/.811
it may be asking a lot but in reality they are similar players, but i would prefer to have Arenado over Wheeler. thats just me though.
"No. Lonely people mixing with one another? Breeding? Creating an even lonelier generation? You're not even allowing natural selection do its work. Pssh. You're like the guy who invented the seat belt."
Dwight Schrute
I think everyone would prefer to have Arenado over Wheeler, but Arenado is probably as close to untouchable as it gets. No reason for Wheeler to be untouchable though.
I don’t care if Constanza hit .500 with 30 HRs and 150 RBI in 3 weeks, benching Heyward was a stupid decision.

About Cuddyer and the Rockies...
…remember that the Rockies have little at second and third base and Cuddyer has played both positions previously. Not well, but he has played them. 79 games at second and 171 at third in his career.
