"We did a lot of good things last year, and now we've got Julio ... That does nothing but improve the offense, and we expect to do better. That's our goal, to lead the NFL in everything. Every offensive category." -Roddy White
Well, let's at least get the context of this right...
Here’s the entire line:
For another, Theriot is a native of Louisiana. He’s Southern by birth, and the Cardinals are the team down there.Certainly, this could have been improved upon: something like…“For another, Theriot is Southern by birth: a native of Baton Rogue, Louisiana. In those parts, the Cardinals are the team down there.” In other words, I don’t think the writer really wasn’t trying to refer to the entire south at all. But for that matter, I would contend that Theriot shouldn’t be anywhere near a listing of the top 10 “traitors” of the game.
Anyway, here’s the corrected link. The best part is the photo used for the “#1 Traitor” — an obviously pre-steroidal version of Roger Clemens.
"Forget Roy Halladay or Clayton Kershaw or Cliff Lee, the NL Cy Young Award should go to O’Ventrel." - David Schoenfield, ESPN.com, 8/19/11
(Of course this is also the same website recently proclaiming that the Braves must sign Jose Reyes because the only options for the SS position were him and SeaBass).

Isn’t this also the website that said the Braves should trade Heyward and Hanson to LA for Ethier and Loney?

Wow
Thats just dumb. Depending, I suppose, on who you talk to, Missouri isn’t even in the South. Much less is it the “team down there” to a greater extent than the Braves. Those guys really need to get their act together. Thats just sloppy.

Actually, before the Braves came south in the 60s
they kind of were the southern team. And it’s not like the Braves are closer Louisiana than St Louis.

Hmmm...
Wouldn’t the Astros be LA’s team?
Why would anyone root for the Cardinals over the Astros?
GATA!
Astros are also relatively recent
the Cardinals are historically the southern team if I’m not mistaken. But yeah, for modern times, Houston is closest in proximity. Who knows if Theriot just liked the Cards, or had some connection to them personally or through his LSU days.

Your title line answers the question in itself
It is worse than claiming that the Braves are the team down there in referring to Florida. At least the Marlins only popped up in the 90s. When I was growing up the Braves were even the team down there ( :-) ) then. But it is absurd to claim that the Braves are the team in Florida these days.
Its like claiming that the Falcons are the team down in the Carolinas and mid south. Yes, I grew up a Falcons fan in North Carolina (that was before the Panthers came into existence) but the the majority in the Carolinians are now clearly Panthers fans.
