Jordan Schafer Proves He's Still An Atlanta Brave (of 2011 vintage)
Because this kind of stuff just keeps happening to Braves players this year, and Jordan Schafer can't seem to shake the last hook that his old organization has in him:
Houston Astros outfielder Jordan Schafer, 25, was arrested in Tampa early Tuesday and charged with a felony count of possession of marijuana, according to arrest reports. [...]
According to Tampa police, Schafer had an expired Mississippi license tag on his black 2008 Range Rover when he was stopped on Columbus Avenue. The arrest report states that both front windows were down and a "strong odor of marijuana was emitting" from the car. The report said Schafer had a marijuana joint in his left hand, and a search of the vehicle found a "clear plastic container containing a green leafy substance" which tested positive as marijuana.
The report said he was in possession of 25 grams of marijuana. In Florida, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana makes the crime a third-degree felony instead of a misdemeanor.
Oof! I feel for Schaf, he's had a really rough go of it in professional sports. Most notably he was suspended 50 games for suspicion of using HGH, violating MiLB's ban against performance enhancing drugs. Now this. Poor kid. A felony sounds like jail time.
I guess in this year of off-the-field brouhahas involving Braves players, it's only fitting that a recently ex-Braves player can't shake the jinx. Of course, maybe this means the off-the-field jinx was also traded to Houston as sort of a PTBNL.

Poor kid?
I don’t really understand the sympathy here. Why should we feel bad for Schafer because he was suspended for violating the PED policy and now has broke the law? Not only that, but he is driving under the influence of drugs, putting others in danger. While I hope that he does turn things around, I certainly do not feel bad for a guy who continues to be reckless with his chances.

The driving stoned thing bothers me, and he should definitely face repercussions for that.
That said, the marijuana laws in Florida are straight-up heinous. There’s no way that should be a felony.

Poor kid? I mean I personally don't care what schafer does in his free time
but he’s hardly some poor kid here. He brought this all on himself. he’s hardly some innocent victim here. You would think with one suspension under his belt, he would be more careful with this kind of stuff. Not to mention that driving while getting high is incredibly stupid.
Might as well copy-paste it here...
Probably gets dropped to a misdemeanor in order for a guilty plea, and everything gets sorted relatively quietly.
Looking at Florida’s marijuana laws, though, damn…5 years for >20g?? I could carry more than twice what he had (a full 2 oz), without a medical license, and the penalty in Colorado is a $100 fine and absolutely no criminal anything. It counts as a civil citation, like jaywalking.

Florida is a great place to live
Weather is nice most of the year (we didn’t even bother with a winter last year) and no state income taxes :) Then again, I’m 37 with 2 kids, and my tokin’ days are far behind me, so I don’t have to worry about it being either a parking ticket level or a bank robbery level….
Owning the Patriots since September 9, 1960
Florida is really tough on drugs, because a large portion of the oxy is distributed through this state. it grows a fair amount of marijuana sold throughout the country. And like 80% of all the Ecstasy originates here. Not to mention Miami being the focal point fro importation of cocaine.
Florida has a long history with drugs and thats the reasoning for the harshness. I don’t care either way, as like Darin it doesnt affect me.
Not that any of this matters, I just thought I would help to clarify why Florida is so harsh.
"No. Lonely people mixing with one another? Breeding? Creating an even lonelier generation? You're not even allowing natural selection do its work. Pssh. You're like the guy who invented the seat belt."
Dwight Schrute
You gotta remember the nightmare that was the 80s in Florida.
That state was inundated with drugs and drug related violence for years. I can’t fault them for being strict.
I can.
It’s weed, not cocaine. Maybe if they inserted a little logic into their drug laws, they wouldn’t have had those issues in the past and in the future as well.
I don’t fault them trying to protect their people from societal ills like violence, but it’s patently stupid to try to protect their people from something that harms an extraordinarily small amount of people, exponentially fewer than alcohol or prescription medicines…especially if violence against the populace is the result of that blunder.
-C
It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
You can argue the merits of the laws all day long,
but the law is the law. If you don’t like it, vote for politicians that will change it. But breaking it, then whining about the harshness of the consequences (which you knew before you did it)…now THAT is patently stupid.
by Aaron Meier on Oct 4, 2011 4:21 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Whoa, buddy.
I didn’t break the laws, and I don’t live in Florida. So don’t preach to me. I’m not your child.
That said, the laws are fucking stupid, and I have voted to change them. And they have changed them in my state, because the voting populace realized how big a waste of resources and time these laws produce, and how many people’s lives have been ruined by unfair marijuana laws. My state is much better off as a result of these changes. Hopefully, Florida’s residents get a little more progressive and vote to enact better laws.
And, as I’ve said throughout this thread, I’m pretty disappointed there’s no DUI-type charges he’s getting hit with. Driving and smoking should absolutely, 100% be illegal.
It’s really hard to prove, legally, being under the influence of marijuana because it’s unique in being fat-soluble. It’s stored in the system for a far longer period of time than it is effective, which separates it from essentially every other illicit recreational drug. That said, smoking and driving should be a slam dunk for any prosecutor, and it’s frustrating that people get away with this.
So, please, get off your high horse bullshit and I’ll be more than happy to end mine right here.

I didn’t ever say obeying the law was optional. There’s a big difference between that and acknowledging what is a horrible penalty for a petty crime.

I forgot
every single law that has been enacted in our nation’s history is just and should be followed no matter what. Anyone who breaks the law is, therefore, a dumbass, and they have no reason to complain. Let’s bring segregation back and start fire-hosing people again!
Wake up and realize that some laws NEED to be changed and that sometimes the best way to make change is to break the law. One of my favorite quotes: Protest beyond the law is not a departure from democracy; it is essential to it.

I am amazed
that you would compare segregation to letting people smoke dope. There are certainly moments in our history where laws crossed certain moral boundaries, and in those rare instances, breaking the law to raise public awareness did serve the greater good (i.e. Rosa Parks) The ability to toke up does not qualify.
by Aaron Meier on Oct 5, 2011 1:43 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Right
Let’s just continue to demonize something which has been used successfully by humans globally for thousands of years. Meanwhile, people can go to the bar and get plastered while smoking cigarettes, mixing caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol! Not to mention the fact that far worse drugs are available with a prescription, things that truly are addictive and destroy many people’s lives.
Not to mention the fact that once you get busted for drugs, you have no life ahead of you. Good luck getting a good job. Might as well go back to drugs. You arrest one drug dealer, that doesn’t mean one less drug dealer like it does for murderers. What it means is there is a job position now available. It is impossible to stop drug use, so let’s keep it criminal. It’s obviously working!
We wanted to get people to stop smoking cigarettes in our country about 30 years ago. How did we do that? We didn’t make tobacco illegal. Instead we educated the populace about the dangers of tobacco use and we came up with a variety of alternatives to treat people and help them get off the drug. But yeah, let’s keep throwing non-violent drug offenders in prison with felonies.
This is all without discussing the fact that marijuana does have positive aspects to it. It’s not just that “the ability to toke up” is not available. It’s the fact that nobody is legally allowed to even perform scientific research on the chemicals to see what types of benefits there might be. I’ve already seen that scientists have found evidence that THC can help with cancer and alzheimers, just to name a couple big ones. Nah, let’s keep it illegal and forbid anyone from performing any kind of research or anything on it. It is such a menace!!
Also, Rosa Parks is a terrible example of someone breaking the law to raise public awareness. She was tired as hell that day and that’s why she didn’t get up. She had no real understanding of the impact her actions would have.

I agree with mostly everything you said, but
until you have actually witnessed the inner drug scene in Florida it is really difficult to understand, why the laws are what they are.
Obviously marijuana is ridiculously abundant in Florida, so yes a big part involves politics, money, etc.
But for many, many people unfortunately marijuana is their way of life, or their job so to speak. This is how the average joe on the streets makes his income.
With that being said, though in Florida it is on a much higher scale, there’s more active drug dealers, more buyers, higher quantities, etc. Their marijuana is most states cocaine or crack in regards to its dangers in which stem from the drug resulting in violence and death. Thousands and Thousands are killed yearly, and in some areas they average 5-10 deaths solely based upon marijuana transactions (I used to live there in two different cities Miami and J-ville.
It is a real issue there, and unfortunately an issue that is very difficult to control, without legalizing it.
So, to sum it up Marijuana is a very dangerous game down there and most of the problems you hear normally associated with cocaine, are their same problems but involve marijuana. Normally people think marijuana as harmless, and I am one of those people, but when you involve tens of thousands of ignorant desperate people dealing with a drug. That’s when it really becomes dangerous and when lives end up being taken.
Florida is just a different animal in many aspects, and they are basically left with few options other than overly strict punishments to try and help lessen their issues with violence, deaths, etc.
I’m not disagreeing with you, preaching, etc. Just simply making you aware why their laws are so strict. Basically just because of how dangerous marijuana really ends up being down there, and just how it ends up taking sooo many lives some innocent some not so innocent.
Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let her sleep.

if you want to talk 80’s drugs in FL, google Iran-Contra… It was all that CIA smuggled cocaine from Nicaragua.
Drugs have and continue to be a mess everywhere, because we allow crooks to run the show. Locking people up, raiding homes, trying to wipe out indigenous plants… none of these things are going to stop people from getting “high.” Heck, nowadays you have idiots smoking bath salts, and there’s so many different plants that have chemicals that induce perception change that state and federal laws can’t really even keep up. Like salvia or that fake weed stuff that the guy from Clemson invented… spice or K2 or whatever they call it. You can buy that stuff at gas stations, and it’s way worse for you than the real deal. I could probably make a list a mile long of substances you can catch a buzz from, and the interesting thing is that weed is probably about the only one you can’t legitimately overdose on… I can distinctly remember drinking Coca-Cola until I was gone on caffeine probably 10+ years before I ever drank a beer or smoked a cigarette or whatever else… That’s why I think we should just quit with the violence and regulate marijuana like wine. It would allow law enforcement to actually focus on violent crime. I just see prohibition as a failed experiment of the 20th century that needs to be done away with.

Actually, I am given to understand that Hillsbrough County (in which Tampa is located) – like most other large urban Florida counties – has a fairly enlightened Drug Court program that is intended to move minor offenses out of the criminal area into the rehabilitation area.
So, assuming Jordan can afford to hire a good attorney and can avoid additional reckless stupidity, I’m pretty confident that he should be able to avoid both significant jail time and a criminal record.

Poor kid? Wow
I’m sorry but I have a hard time feeling sorry for something he brought on himself. Maybe the laws are terrible but he grew up there so he knows the laws. In fact I would argue that he should know better than most not to get caught up in illegal substances given his history.
Does this count as a second offense against the drug rules of MLB
and incur a larger suspension of 25-50 games?
And the “joint in his left hand” line gets me. Was he still smoking it as the cop walked up? If that’s the case, I’d argue he doesn’t “know better” because he’d obviously be an idiot.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
I don't think this falls under the MLB rules
because it’s not a PED. But, I could be wrong.
Most people use statistics the way a drunk would use a lamppost—for support, and not for illumination.

No. Marijuana is not a performance enhancing drug under the current CBA. Lincecum got zero punishment for his weed offense. The minor leagues play by different rules, though, so he’s lucky (from a baseball standpoint only) that he’s in the bigs.
The AJC article says he was driving next to an unmarked police car.
-C
It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
But was Lincecum's a "first offense"?
That might be a different situation than for someone who would already be in their drug/substance abuse program if Schafer’s first issue mandated he be in the program. And marijuana is listed under the banned substances group. Not in the same category as performance enhancers, but a category with cocaine and other illegal intoxicants.
Driving next to an unmarked car, I guess hanging it out the window. Not as dumb or as funny as I wanted it to be, but still not smart. Riding while smoking in the first place is just not smart; that’s what the sanctity of your home is for Jordan.
http://sportsandgrits.com/
They don't test for marijuana among MLB players, just MiLB players
I assume that pretty much means MLB doesn’t really care what guys on the 40 man roster are doing when it comes to smoking weed.

All the physical talents in the world, to play a game he loves, simply wasted on a 25 year old man with the mindset of a 17 year old.
People like Jordan, will get another chance, mainly because of his talents, but with such a bone-headed CHOICE, there are MANY, MANY others who are much more deserving.

I agree with this also
you can’t be driving around under the influence of something that could impede your ability to safely operate a vehicle. Anything that puts other people at risk is something which cannot be tolerated.
GREAT MOVIE.
"No. Lonely people mixing with one another? Breeding? Creating an even lonelier generation? You're not even allowing natural selection do its work. Pssh. You're like the guy who invented the seat belt."
