Redmond Earns Silver Medal, Terdoslavich Stays Hot, And Hernandez Goes On A Tear In This Week's Atlanta Braves Winter League Recap

After a record breaking season for Lynchburg, Joey Terdoslavich is still slugging away in the Arizona Fall League.

Todd Redmond earned himself some more hardware with Team USA, Joey Terdoslavich stayed hot in the AFL, and Diory Hernandez went on a hot streak in the Dominican Winter League this week in Atlanta Braves Winter League action.

After picking up a bronze medal in the 2011 Baseball World Cup, Todd Redmond picked up a silver medal in the Pan-Am Games, as USA lost 2-1 to Canada in the gold medal game on Tuesday. Redmond the game that put the USA in the gold medal game, in which they beat Cuba 12-10, pitching 4 innings, allowing 4 earned runs, 8 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 3. That was his only start in the Pan-Am games, bringing his total stats with Team USA this year to a 5.23 ERA, a 1.40 WHIP, 24 hits, 5 walks, 13 strikeouts, and 2 medals over 20.2 innings in 4 starts.

In the Arizona Fall League, Joey Terdoslavich stayed hot for the Surprise Saguaros, going 5-11 with a triple, a homer, and 3 RBI in 3 games played, upping his total stats to a .462 average, a 1.230 OPS, 3 doubles, 2 triples, a homer, and 7 RBI in 39 at bats. Christian Bethancourt cooled off, going 2-11 with a double, dropping his stats to a still impressive .333 average, .824 OPS, 2 doubles, 1 homer, 5 RBI, and 3 stolen bases in 36 at bats. Todd Cunningham was 3-11 with 3 RBI this week, putting him at a .324 average, .810 OPS, 2 doubles, 10 RBI, and 2 stolen bases in 34 at bats. Sean Gilmartin made 1 start this week, allowing 1 earned run over 5 innings, walking 1 and striking out 4. In 16 innings over 4 starts the 21 year old left has a 3.38 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts. JJ Hoover only made 1 relief appearance this week and it did not go well, as he allowed 3 earned runs while only recording 2 outs. His total stats in the AFL aren't pretty either, with a 10.13 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP in 5.1 innings over 6 appearances. Billy Bullock allowed 1 earned run in 1.2 innings in his lone appearance, giving him a 11.12 ERA, a 2.12 WHIP and 6 strikeouts in 5.2 innings over 5 games. Erik Cordier did not appear in a game this week.

We'll update you on the Latin leagues after the break:

Teammate Fernando de los Santos hit an RBI double in his lone plate appearance, his first on the season. Wilkin Castillo was 4-12 in 3 games for Escogido, giving him a .278 average and a .760 OPS in 18 at bats. Mauro Gomez is struggling for Toros del Este, going 3-14 with 5 strikeouts, hitting .167 with a .500 OPS in 24 at bats. Teammate Yohan Flande allowed 2 earned runs over 2.1 innings in 2 appearances, giving him a 4.91 ERA and a 2.18 WHIP in 3.2 innings. Jose Lugo has been Este's situational lefty, recording 1 out over 2 appearances this week, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings over 4 total appearances. Donlel Linares was 0-2 in his first and only game with Estrellas de Oriente. Jaye Chapman didn't make an appearance for Aguilas Cibaenas this week.

In the Venezuelan Winter League, Ernesto Mejia had a hit in all 5 games he played in for Aguilas de Zulia, going 5-19 with 2 RBI. I read a DOB tweet about J-Terds playing some 3B in Arizona. Sounded like he might play 3B more next season too. Is LF out of the question with him? It’s a shame the Organizational POY is so blocked by Freeman. Do you think he can handle anything besides 1B or might he just end up being traded?

I’d like to see him in LF over 3B. I actually think he’d do better out there than at 1B. I don’t feel like his hands are very soft, and that’s something your really need in the infield, especially at first. He’s not incredibly athletic, but he’s mobile enough to handle LF, especially if he can hit like he has.

Thanks

I’ve never seen him and probably wouldn’t have picked that much up if I had!

So far he’s only played 1 game at 3B, all the rest at 1B.

This is a problem I'm happy to have

I'm actually starting to get excited about Terdoslavich

He’s outshining a league full of stars out there in Arizona.

He’s starting to profile himself like an Alex Gordon type without the walks. Just mobile enough for LF, decent homer power, and gap power for days.

I’d take a younger switch-hitting version of Alex Gordon all day.

I’m much more excited about Terdo now than I was at the start of the year, but I still want to see what he does in AA. The stat in the AFL are great, but hitting well in the thin air isn’t exactly an accomplishment. I worry a lot about hitters who don’t look great out there.

If he has a good AA/AAA year, then we start worrying about where to play him.

Freeman can pretty much only play 1B, so if Terdo can play somewhere else (and 3B is worth a shot, Salcedo can be moved later if needed also)- that’s great. LF isn’t bad though.

Worst case, he becomes a bench bat/backup 1B, in which case we’d need to give him a few DH games at AAA to see if he can do that, or we use him as deadline trade bait or a blocked prospect swap.

Isn't the general opinion

that Salcedo is doomed to be a corner IF? Or am I misremembering that?

He's already a 3B

the move seems to have been early this past year if you look at where he was playing all season.

Yeah

I meant, I thought the idea was that he wasn’t ever going to be playable at any position other than corner IF. So “moving him later if needed” doesn’t seem like an option, really.

I still think he’d be great at SS, but the organization clearly thinks he’s a thirdbaseman.

Is that an assessment of the potential pop in his bat, or is that a defensive assessment?

Defensively. When looking at a prospect you want them to play the most difficult defensive position they can handle and I think Salcedo can handle SS just fine. I know where the errors come from and I think the vast majority of them evaporate as he gets older and experienced.
