Does anyone think the Braves will try J-Terd out as a LF next year in AA? From what I hear, his bat is the real deal. His defense is in question, but with Freeman at 1B in ATL, he really doesn’t have a place except corner OF in ATL.

His bat is the real deal in the minors

I’m not sure that it’ll ever translate, though. He’s already a year older than Freeman. But if he has a future in the majors, its as a LF.

He'll hit in the majors

Check his power – per cent of hits for extra bases and his walk %. Info in college he played 3B and OF, but apparently not well. I suspect he stays at 1B, so he maybe bound for another organization. He should be attractive as a switch hitter 1B/DH.

I’m thinking the Braves probably keep him at 1B and use him as a trade chip like you say. I honestly don’t know a ton about J-Terd(I love that name lol), but I have heard good things about his offense even though he is older to be playing in High A. I still wouldn’t mind seeing if he can play some LF good enough and maybe be our answer in LF in 2013 or 2014.

We have to give him a shot in LF before using him as trade bait.

right

but FF is also 21 years old.

And in the majors

Terdoslavich is 22 and just finished High-A. He’s a year older and two years behind developmentally.

my point is that FF is very young

Right

Pertinent in a comparison of the two players, but not damning Joey-T’s future.

Yes after Chip retires, after the 2012 season, and, hopefully, Prado slides in at 3B

The only place/starting spot for J-Terd will be @ LF. Most likely, for 2013, there will be a one-year signing, for a stop gap, that is if and only if he continues to develop.

Most likely there could be other viable options for 2013, but with J-Terds bat it is going to be very difficult to not atleast give him a shot.

Numbers like his, so far, do not come around very often, so like I said if he keeps it up it will be extremely interesting to see where he ends up at.

Ideally I would like to see him in Left Field, but he really may not have capabilities and/or the skill set to complete the transition. I’m thinking he can and will do just fine out in Left, but that has yet to be seen. I’m almost completely 100% positive he opened several eyes this past season (and is continuing to open eyes in WB), so there is a possibility they know the only likely scenerio, in order for him to be a starter is if he transitions to Left Field (hopefully starting next season).

If he does swap positions, IMO, a viewer could expect a slight drop-off in overall production, not just due to an higher talent pool, but also because of the extra work he will have to put in and extra focus of learning a new position.

So it could be very possible, that if he does swap positions, that he might need an extra year or half a season to adjust properly, before he can put back his primary focus at the plate.

There is not enough said, about how much switching positions really effects a player’s hitting. For example, not only did Prado have to switch positions, but also he had to adjust to a new pivotal role in the lineup, the two-hole.

Looking at Prado’s season, I would really consider a great deal of his ineffectiveness due to swapping positions, and having to primarily maintain his focus on learning and constantly adapting to the changes defensively. Meantime, that extra work and time he normally has to work on his hitting, is for the most part being switched to focusing on the position change.

All-in-all, as I previously stated, I really would not downplay or second guess just how severe it can hurt a players offensive abilities, if he has to learn a new position. In reality, the proof is all there and I would expect an offensive drop-off due to the previously mentioned reasons,

BUT

IF J-Terd can transition out to Left and it does not effect his offensive production he really is just as special of a player as he is starting to make people beleive.

Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let her sleep.

I think some people got too carried away by the hype train.

Terdoslavich is a decent prospect that had a good year, but let’s look at some facts. He’s a college hitter in his second year, but he’s 22 and only in High-A. He showed plenty of power with a .240 Iso, but he has a rather mediocre walk rate (7.6%) to go with a pretty sizable strikeout rate (20%). He’s also not athletic enough to play anything but 1B at even the low levels of the minors.

So he’s old for his level, doesn’t walk that much, strikes out too much to sustain a high average, and is limited defensively. I’m not saying that he’s talentless, but he’s not much more than a decent prospect.

For a prospect he is

And I’m not the only one that thinks so: http://capitolavenueclub.com/?p=4923

Interesting

well according to Sickels, 22 is not old for High A

by Braves24 on Oct 19, 2011 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I think its more borderline than anything else

But by that age he should be higher.

I agree. Being 22 in High A doesn’t damn you, but most legit prospects aren’t that old in High A. What you want is 19/20 in Low A, 20/21 in High A, 21/22 in AA, and 22/23 in AAA.

I think you add one year to that for college guys.

by Broccoman on Oct 20, 2011 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions

No, college guys should be more advanced and should move up quicker. That’s the whole point of choosing to take college guys.

22 is pretty old for a spec in High A. Jake has a point. However, doesn’t mean he sucks though. He is getting a lot of hype though. 2012 will be the telling sign though, if he can hit good in AA, then even at 23 years old, teams would still like the guy. 2012 I think will tell if he is a decent spec or a possible MLB starting 1B/LF.

This is my point

I’m not saying he’s horrible, I’m not even saying he’s bad. But right now he’s nothing more than a decent prospect with some good and some bad. Next year will be very telling for him.

I don’t really think 20% is that high of a strikeout rate, especially for a power hitter. Obviously you’d want it to be lower, because, theoretically, it’s going to get higher as he moves up, but 20% is pretty decent.

Redmond

It is somewhat remarkable to me that he can be an effective workhorse in AAA and a key starter for 3 national teams, but still just be organization depth for the Braves.

I’m really wondering if he wouldn’t be a solid 3 or 4 starter on the majority of ML teams.

by fandave on Oct 19, 2011 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

He’s a Minor League free agent who’s all set to find a new team, so maybe we’ll get the chance to find out.

I think he could be a innings-eating #5 or so

It’s unfortunate for him that he’s been in such a pitching-rich organization.

im curious

as to how he hasn’t been traded yet. I guess because this year was the first year our prospects were actually at the higher levels.

Redmond

Thanks for these updates—which will really help during the winter.

I really hope that Redmond gets to see the show, he certainly deserves a shot….
