Braves Rewind: 2010 Fan Projections for Braves Infielders
In this post, I'm going to continue my look back at the 2010 FanGraphs Fan Projections. This week, I'll be analyzing the fans' projections for the Braves' infielders. The original projections can be seen in this FanPost from last year. To summarize that post, the Braves' infield was projected to be worth 15.8 WAR overall (FanGraphs' version), which is a very high total but was only projected to be 3rd-best in the division. Here is a table summarizing the projections for individual Braves:
| Projected | Player | PA | AVG | OBP | SLG | HR | UZR | WAR |
| 1B | Troy Glaus | 515 | .259 | .351 | .462 | 22 | 0.3 | 2.2 |
| 2B | Martin Prado | 595 | .299 | .350 | .426 | 11 | -0.1 | 2.8 |
| SS | Yunel Escobar | 616 | .299 | .375 | .434 | 14 | 1.4 | 4.3 |
| 3B | Chipper Jones | 576 | .304 | .414 | .497 | 21 | -4.4 | 4.5 |
| Corner IF | Eric Hinske | 372 | .247 | .343 | .396 | 11 | 0.4 | 1.1 |
| Middle IF | Omar Infante | 365 | .281 | .333 | .355 | 2 | 0.4 | 0.9 |
As you can see, these projections were all over the place. The only fan projection that was even close to reality was the one for Eric Hinske. Let's compare to the actual numbers these players put up (plus the numbers for a few other guys who helped out in the IF):
| Actual | Player | PA | AVG | OBP | SLG | HR | UZR | WAR |
| 1B | Troy Glaus | 483 | .240 | .344 | .400 | 16 | -8.2 | 0.5 |
| 1B | Derrek Lee | 151 | .287 | .384 | .465 | 3 | -1.1 | 0.8 |
| 2B | Martin Prado | 651 | .307 | .350 | .459 | 15 | -3.6 | 3.9 |
| SS | Yunel Escobar | 301 | .238 | .334 | .284 | 0 | 5.6 | 1.3 |
| SS | Alex Gonzalez | 292 | .240 | .291 | .386 | 6 | 0.3 | 0.7 |
| 3B | Chipper Jones | 381 | .265 | .381 | .426 | 10 | 0.1 | 2.7 |
| 3B | Brooks Conrad | 177 | .250 | .324 | .487 | 8 | -5.2 | 0.7 |
| Corner IF | Eric Hinske* | 320 | .256 | .338 | .456 | 11 | -3.9 | 1.0 |
| Middle IF | Omar Infante | 506 | .321 | .359 | .416 | 8 | -1.1 | 2.7 |
* I know that Hinske spent a lot of time in the OF this year, but I just kept him with the IFs for simplicity's sake.
Glaus, Escobar, and Chipper all underperformed their projections significantly, though for different reasons. Prado and Infante both outperformed their projections handily. The Braves also got nice boosts from Brooks Conrad and Derrek Lee.
Add all the Braves' figures (plus Freddie Freeman's -0.2 WAR in limited time) and the Braves' infield was worth 14.1 WAR this year, or about 1.7 WAR below their projected value. This may seem disappointing, but it's not. For one thing, the fan projections on average overestimated each regular player's worth by about 0.5 WAR; taking this into account, the Braves did about as well as expected.
(There's more after the jump, including a couple graphs.)
Comparing the Braves' 14.1 infield WAR to the rest of the division (using the same method of simply adding players' WARs based on their projected positions), we get this:
Note: the red-bordered boxes in the Mets' and Phillies' columns indicate that those teams received below-replacement-level performance from their bench infielders. The teams' total infield WAR are even with the bottom of the red-bordered box. I'm sorry if this makes the graph harder to read; I had to come up with some way of displaying negative value.
As you can see, the Braves may have slightly underperformed their projections, but they actually still beat out the Phillies, Mets, and Marlins.
Funnily enough, what makes the difference between these values is not the top-end players but the bench guys and fill-ins. The Nationals had no infielders with a negative WAR, and the Braves had only Freeman's trivial -0.2 WAR figure. The Phillies, on the other hand, were docked -2.1 WAR for horrific performances from Greg Dobbs and Juan Castro. The Marlins had -1.2 WAR from four guys, and the Mets had -1.3 WAR from four guys. If none of these players were below replacement level, all the infields but the Mets would have been worth roughly the same overall value. It pays to have a solid bench (or in the Braves' case, an excellent one).
Finally, let's look at the Braves' infield spider chart. This chart graphs the Braves infielders' performance compared to major league averages in five categories: batting average (BA), isolated power (ISO), walk rate (BB%), strikeout rate (K%), and defense (UZR). On the graph, further from the center and positive values are better. So a +10% in strikeout rate indicates that the team struck out 10% less than league average; this data point will be further from the center than the data point for the league average.
To make the UZR totals easier to work with, I made all the totals positive. Since the lowest UZR in the league was Matt Kemp's -24.0, I just added 24 to each player's UZR. I call this UZR (Above Worst) or UZR (AW). The average UZR (AW) for the league was 24, and the lowest (Kemp) was 0. If a player has a -3.0 UZR according to FanGraphs, I used 21.0 as their UZR (AW) figure (-3 + 24). This is equal to 12.5% below league average. I hope that makes sense. If it doesn't, just trust me.
Green represents the Braves' actual performance. Blue is their projected performance. Anyway, here's the graph:
The Braves hit for a bit better average and a fair amount more power than expected (relative to the league average). Still, they were only about average in ISO and a bit above average in BA. They displayed great plate discipline, striking out 11% less than the league and walking 14% more, both of which more or less conform to the projections.
The biggest difference, however--one that significantly cuts into the good work the Braves did in the other categories--is that the Braves infield defense scored very poorly. The total UZR of the Braves' infielders was -17.1, which means they cost the team nearly 2 wins. This is slightly unfair, as Eric Hinske's -3.9 UZR was mostly acquired in the outfield, but there's no debating that Troy Glaus and Brooks Conrad has some pretty major defensive issues at times. The one position that was consistently solid was shortstop, where Yunel Escobar was excellent and Alex Gonzalez was average. The other infield spots all came in at below average according to UZR, however.
I hope you enjoyed this look back at the Braves' 2010 infield. Looking forward to 2011, the Braves will have some major changes: Dan Uggla replacing Prado at second base, Alex Gonzalez playing full-time at short, and Freddie Freeman taking over for Glaus (and Lee). Omar Infante is gone from the utility infield role, too. Add all that up and I'd say the Braves' infield is probably going to end up a bit short of its 2010 production, but not dramatically so. (Prado replacing the horrible LF combinations from last year should be a huge boost to the outfield production, however.)
What do you guys think? Will the Braves' infield be better or worse in 2011? Which NL East team will get the most value from its infield?

Thanks Pac!
I loved these when you did the previews for the last season. Thanks for doing a follow up!

I don't get it...
I thought Yunel Escobar was worth at least a +10 WAR!!!
for what it's worth
he was still significantly better than alex gonzalez was for us

When we get Stephen Drew next year, we’ll forget all about Alex Gonzalez.

Worse at the plate, better in the field...
I wonder what Sea Bass’s defensive metrics would have been without those 7 errors in his first 11 games.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
I’m not sure what just happened here, but I think I understood all of this. And what’s more, it made some level of sense.
I’m scared.

I’m guessing the gentleman from New York wishes to disagree with pacgnosis’ findings?

I agree with pac's findings
because I understand none of it. One of those times where you just smile, nod, and agree to what’s been said because it’s above your comprehension.
I’m disappointed that you actually understand it because that leaves, well-just me, as the only one who doesn’t get it
Ah. If you want, you can join in the McCann love-fest I inadvertantly started at MCC.

Sorry....
I knew this one would be a bit technical. I promise I’ll write some fun, pointless posts at some point.

That UZR Rating...
Ouch. And we replace Prado with Uggla. And Infante with … umm, no one yet. At least Freeman replaces mostly Glaus’ performance.
If we going to rely on pitching and specifically sinker-ballers, then we’ll have to get better defense out of the INF.
This is why Uggla should be told to stop whining and get the hell out to left field. Anyone who thinks he deserves to play 2nd over Prado is either perpetually drunk or mentally deficient.

We will miss Infante. Bottom line, our 2011 bench does not look like it can sniff the 2010 bench. Prado in LF is an upgrade, but he is listed as the top back up at 1B, 2B and 3B. I’m not sure he will be an OF upgrade for long. I like our starting 8, I’m crazy about our pitching, but I’m really disappointed in what our bench is looking like.
Free Matt Young!
Bench is still decent.....
Anytime you have a guy on your bench who technically led your team in OPS over the last two years(Ross), I don’t think you can call it a disappointment. Conrad seems to know how to handle the stick, Hinske’s been great the past couple of years. Mather has the tools to be effective, but jury is still out obviously. Young’s a possibility, and who knows……the Braves may pick up another infielder, I hope they do at least.

Lee was worth more WAR than Glaus in 1/3 of the time
Yikes
Hey guys, big gulps huh? Alright....welp, see you later!
Not surprising...
that the 6-week rental of Derrick Lee cost more than a whole year of Troy Glaus…
And this...
is why we pay pacgnosis the big bucks to write for TC.*

Can Uggla improve his fielding?
I think this blog is hinting that our WAR might go down some. In anticipation of this maybe our pitching will improve??
….Maybe less GBIP and more Ks???
After all didn’t Lowes K rate improve after he found a “Kink” in his mechanics? Also, won’t the addition of Minor improve the K rate?
So, to keep the infield better we will need a special line-up for Huddy….the "rest"day for Uggla…..Yes, he will be ready for pitch hitting but maybe Prado gets that day?
it just felt right and the chance to go to the postseason is hard to pass up. I’ve always respected their orginization… and Bobby…I’m excited. I’m looking forward to it...Derrek Lee (at press conference sayiing he had been traded to the Braves)
To find out the answers to these, and other exciting questions, tune in next week— same Bat-time, same Bat-channel!

I wish Uggla knew how to play 1B....
That way he could spell Freeman against tough lefties and Prado slides over to 2B, with Hinske or Mather in LF. Or play out that same scenario when Hudson or Lowe are on the mound, especially if Uggla is REALLY butchering it at 2B when those two or pitching.
But I think Uggla’s defense will improve in Atlanta. I don’t completely buy into his defensive home/away splits being accurate(and a big reason for that is I don’t totally trust defensive metrics), but I do know that Sun Life had THE worst infield in baseball, by far. I go to about 6 games a year in Miami, it’s brutal. And Hanley wasn’t exactly Ozzie Smith out there at SS, so with Gonzalez up the corner with him, maybe that’ll help. I don’t expect plus defense, but I expect some sort of improvement with the glove.

Hmmm
Anybody notice that the Nats’ third baseman is pretty good?

Glad you noticed that.
I didn’t want to dwell on that in a post about the Braves, but damn. Not only is he a great player, he seems to be really underappreciated outside of D.C. and the stats community. It’s a shame.

More underappreciated by the general fan population
Zimmerman or McCann. Neither has ever started the ASG, as an example, but Zim has only been chosen once to Heap’s 5. Who do you think is more underappreciated?
I was about to say that mccann had been in the majors longer but he hasnt. ASG-wise its an easier position for Brian (less good competition).

Man, I like Posey...
…..but Carlos Santana needs his buzz. I think that guy, in a year or two, is going to unseat Mauer. Maybe not in AVG or defense, but I think he’s a 35-40 HR guy and I like his defense already. He won’t hit for a ridiculously high average, but he could be an on-base machine like Mauer. Plus, he’s got some damn good speed for a catcher.
I was gutted with his knee injury, couldn’t get enough of seeing that guy play.

Still easier
Posey will be the new Molina/Russell Martin — stealing Brian’s thunder. I’m sure Posey will start the next 10 ASG, only to get pulled in time for Brian to have the game winning hit.

The Defense...
I think the defense will be solid…with Freddie pickin em at first and Uggla away from that atrocity of an infield in Miami I think the defense will be solid…
Offense-wise a lot will depend on CJ’s health and if Uggla decides to crush em like he always seemed to do when he was with the Fish…I don’t have too high an expectation for Freeman since it’ll be his first full year but I like the infield…I would love to have Prado back at 2B, but what can we do?
