Open Thread 9/9: Braves vs Cardinals
St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta Braves, Sep 9, 2010 7:10 PM EDT
Adam Wainwright against Jair Jurrjens should be a terrific matchup to open up a four game series between the Cards and Braves. Both are well-respected pitchers with a number of different ways to get batters out. The Cardinals are just 3-7 over their past ten and Wainwright has not been himself his past few starts. With that said, he is still one of the top pitchers in the National League and is in contention for the Cy Young. In order to win this series, the Braves need to beat either Chris Carpenter or Wainwright, which is never an easy task. The Cards also have their pitcher batting eighth, a move that I actually do agree with. Jurrjens shouldn't have much of a problem with the six through nine spots in the lineup though, as none of them are any good at the plate.

Atlanta Hawks=the team that drafted big $$$$$$$$$ instead of big men.
Ben - morbid curiosity:
Do you agree with the move (putting the pitcher in the 8-spot) for the Cardinals, or do you think it is something the Braves should do (even occassionally)?
In any case, why?

given the fact that Prado is Pujols-esque, it probably wouldn’t hurt anything.

wainwright is actually a fairly good hitter...
plus apparently there is some strategy to turning over the order more easily that way
by SouthernPanther on Sep 9, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions
I just don't see it.
Once the batting order goes around the first time, I view it as more of a loop as opposed to a list that starts back from the beginning.
That being said, lead-off hitters, nine-hole hitters, etc only (theoretically) bat in those spots at one time during the game. In addition, number of outs in an inning and runners on base have the potential to be vastly different for each hitter’s at bats, batting in the same spot in the order.
I just don’t see it making too much of a difference.
The only time where I could POTENTIALLY justify it, is if you have three guys who just fit best in the 1-2 spots. Where none of the three have the power good for a 3-8 hitter, so you just bat them after the pitcher to equate to an extra speed and contact hitter at the same spots in the line-up.

i think someone did a fanpost on it here
got a bunch of statistics and crap that support switching the pitcher into the 8 spot somehow helps your lineup…i don’t remember, just saying maybe there is some logic to it…
by SouthernPanther on Sep 9, 2010 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Turning the order over more easily? No. It’s about getting a competent hitter in front of the top of your lineup rather than a .110 OBP pitcher.
Of course this also works off the theory that your 4 best hitters should be batting in the 1-4 spots, if you’ve got a team that sticks a garbage hitter in the 2 spot so he can “Move runnerz ovah!” and a shitty OBP guy in the leadoff spot because he can get “teh stealz” then it’s not a productive strategy.
It’s also not something that’s going to pay off in a huge number of extra runs either way. The order of your lineup isn’t nearly as important as the talent of the people who are in it. We’re talking a few runs here or there, maybe enough to equate to 1 or 2 extra wins over the course of the season.
I think it’s a strategy that should be employed if you have one of those decent OBP/low power types. Or a speed demon who is an otherwise poor hitter. A Gregor Blanco, for example, would have been a great choice to bat in the 9 spot and serve as an extra leadoff man the 2nd time around the order.
"They should just give two ROYs in the NL and skip the AL this year." - KLaw
Which batting order looks better to you?
Jair Jurrjens – P
Omar Infante – 2B
Jason Heyward – RF
Martin Prado – 3B
Brian McCann – C
Derrek Lee – 1B
Eric Hinske – LF
Alex Gonzalez – SS
Melky Cabrera – CF
OR
Melky Cabrera – CF
Omar Infante – 2B
Jason Heyward – RF
Martin Prado – 3B
Brian McCann – C
Derrek Lee – 1B
Eric Hinske – LF
Alex Gonzalez – SS
Jair Jurrjens – P
Because these are basically what your lineup becomes once you go through the order once. The guy who bats last is also the guy who hits in front of the guy who bats first.
Me, I’d rather have Melky hitting in front of Infante and Heyward than JJ, but, yeah, it’s not traditional.

And now that I'm thinking about it ...
It would probably be an especially good strategy for our club, since our lineup is already incredibly top heavy.
"They should just give two ROYs in the NL and skip the AL this year." - KLaw
If the Braves bat the pitcher 8th and Ankiel 9th.....
…opposing teams will intentionally walk the pitcher to get to him.
Hate seeing Winn's name in that lineup.
He treats us like we owe him money, with accrued interest.

It's hard to say what's been most impressive. The seamless jump from AA? The ability to hit for average? The ability to hit for power? The 18 walks in 111 trips to the plate? The flair for the dramatic? When you're trying to isolate the most impressive aspect of Jason Heyward's game, there's a lot to choose from, and it's only been a month and a half.

There isn’t a really good reason… it’s something like he was at a game where Vidro hit into a DP and he decided to convince everybody to call it a Vidro and eventually it stuck.

Goddamnit, Jurgy.
Seriously?
It’s not enough that you give up a 3-run lead as soon as you get it.
It’s not enough that you then decide to load the bases and get out of it by the skin of your teeth.
It’s not enough that you go right back out there, get roughed up again, then decide to cut off a throw just to get another out.
But then you have to throw Pujols something to hit when you’re down by 3 runs?
Ridiculous.
Good thing he's out now.
