Open Thread #139: Invalids vs. Overachievers

Despite all the arguing that we as baseball fans, sports fans, and internet geeks alike, actually do on the internet, sometimes there are stark reminders of how meaningless numbers, history, and statistics actually are, when it comes to present day, present moment.  Who would have actually thought that Brian Burres would beat the Braves?  Who would have actually imagined Tim Hudson would lose to the Pirates?  Who would have fathomed, that the worst team in Major League Baseball would take the first two games in a three-game series and knock the Atlanta Braves out of first place in the NL East?  Certainly, not I.  But unfortunately, such is reality, and we now stand in second place, and tonight rely on Derek Lowe (and Andrew Miller) of all people, to pitch like a winner(s), avoid the sweep, and put us back on the right track.

So, I'm going to take an alternative approach to talking up tonight's game, since apparently going the educated and analytical route and predicting sweeps has more or less blown up in my face, and at this rate, I don't think anyone's going to want me covering any future series, regardless of if gondeee, mvhs, pac, or Ben want to take a series off.  Call me back up in 2-3 weeks when the Phillies are on deck, because I remember Brad Lidge had an epic meltdown last year during a series I covered, where Matt Diaz laid down the world's greatest bunt that resulted in an RBI, two errors, and a game-ender.

ZACH DUKE.  ZACH.  DUKE.  His name even sounds majestic.  Like a real, world beating ace of a horse, who is probably going to have a dominant performance tonight.  ZACH DUKE was born on April 19th.  I was born on April 19th.  He's also from Waco, Texas.  On his 10th birthday back in 1993, the Waco Siege ended with some raging fires that resulted in nearly 80 cumulative deaths.  What people don't realize is that the fires were started by the heat ZACH DUKE was throwing, while playing catch too close to some fields.  ZACH DUKE married a minor league emcee, two years after breaking into the big leagues.  ZACH DUKE is also a former all-star, in 2009.  But not just any all-star - an injury replacement all-star - because replacing Matt Cain with ZACH DUKE isn't a downgrade; it's an upgrade.  Charlie Manuel wasn't dumb; he knew he had to pick a Giant to represent the squad, so he picked an injured one, so he could bring in a true winner instead to replace him later.

Completely ignore ZACH DUKE'S numbers.  Ignore that throughout his career, he is 24 games under a .500 winning record.  Ignore the mediocre 4.44 career ERA, and the mediocre K/9, xFIP and WHIP. And most importantly, ignore ZACH DUKE'S 2-4 record against Atlanta, with hitters hitting him at a rate of .346 and an .888 OPS in over 250 palte appearances, because that's clearly irrelevant to ZACH DUKE'S true ability.  ZACH DUKE is a winner.  ZACH DUKE is an all-star. But don't ignore ZACH DUKE'S blazing 87 mph fastball, and his knee-buckling 81 mph change.  When the ball slams the brakes like that, we're pretty much toast.

Not to mention that he's a lefty pitcher, so I'm sure he's going to give Derrek Lee, and Melky Cabrera, and Alex Gonzalez some fits today.

And as for Derek Lowe, let's just look back to happier times, and try to funnel these winning   thoughts to our $15 million dollar man.  Don't ever doubt the power of positive thinking.

I've got to go to calculus now and ill be driving home through at least half the game, but I would like to post something from my own facebook, earlier this morning:

OK Derek Lowe, I’ve been really patient, I’m pretty sure I’m the only Braves fan left that still likes you. You made me look like an ass when you had that good start and I said you’d win 18 games. I know you’re 37 and you have a bone chip lodged in your elbow but we HAVE to win tonight. Go get ’em.

I think it would have been nice if you hadn’t photo-shopped out the fireballs that flock to ZACH DUKE when he thinks about throwing his fastball… It’s bad karma to downplay the opposing pitcher like that.

Money on the Phillies?

Lowe is due for one of his bi-monthly good starts. That’s about all I have.

Still…I’d rather see him pitch with his left arm that allow Kawakami onto that mound with a tomahawk on his chest. Whatever arguments you can make about what Ken’s record should be and what little run support he’s gotten, especially in the season’s first few months, the fact remains that he’s about a million miles from where he needs to be right now as a pitcher and thus should be kept a million miles from a starting assignment.

Secret plan...

Braves score 6 runs in the first two innings, Lowe exits with pain in his elbow. KK comes in and finishes it out for a 6-3 (maybe 4) victory.

Ah, okay.

Kawakami has some borderline irrational supporters (and similarly unbalanced critics, as well), so I took that at face value. Sorry.

Well, I’m only a supporter now because I have a serious problem with the way he was treated this year (with incomplete information as to why, of course), but I think he has a serious case of Brad Lidge Syndrome and (in all likelihood) a dead arm…just my opinion.

by El Soro on Sep 8, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd call it 1990 Marty Clary Syndrome

Or 1981 Tommy Boggs…or 1985 Pascual Perez. A guy who should be 5-5, 4-6, something on that order instead of 1-10 or whatever the case may be. Bad run support and mounting pressure are a bad brew and eventually it takes it’s toll.

Irrespective of how we got here, we’re here and he’s not suited to start for us the rest of this season. He’s probably been treated badly but I’m not in the frame of mind to run him out there in an effort to make him feel better.

The world's tallest man...

Is 8’1" and 364 pounds. Despite the difference in height, I’d say Lowe’s locks net him at least a couple more pounds, and that thunderous right arm of him adds at least another 17.

8’, 384 pounds, mother effers. Hurling baseballs or boulders, Lowe is a fierce competitor.

Sadly, it is rumored that one of Lowe’s ancestors was crushed in the face by a come-backer in ancient times, giving the Israelites a 1-0 victory over the Philistines.

That’s right, Derek Lowe’s ancestors were Philistines.

Let’s hope he can break free of his past and get the Braves a win tonight.

Fuck the Philistines!!

You’re thinking about someone other than me. If you see me in a game thread it’s at the beginning before the first pitch is thrown or during a rain delay. I’m working on a desktop here. I can hear my TV from here but I can’t see it from here. During a game, I’m in there watching what’s going on.

i strong disagree

he might have had a few nice games but his overall production is not the same as it was in Toronto. Yes he was upgrade over Yunel but there might have been other SS out there who could have been had like Stephen Drew for example. Plus Alex has made alot of errors and I know I’m not the only one to notice that. He makes good plays but he messes up on routine plays.

by Jaymin Patel on Sep 8, 2010 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

7 errors in his first 11 games...

1 since. He’s been making incredible plays look routine since making the adjustment.

These stats are a couple days old, but I imagine they’re still close enough to exact to use: .354 OBP with runners on, .369 with RISP. Hit 18 XBH in 48 games, six more than Yunel had in 75 games. His OBP since coming to the Braves is above league average, especially with runners on.

Might have been available doesn’t equal was available. Drew is still with the D-Backs, and it’s not like the Braves were the only team out there w/ SS needs.

That’s why our odds for making the playoffs is so high. All those thing factor in run differential and these blow out games (after narrow losses) really make us computers’s favorite.

just because he had 1 good outing doesn’t mean he can’t revert back into the form he was in for the past 2 months if the pain in his elbow returns

if he struggles, yank him and we’re still leading big. And you can feel justified in not using him again.

But if he did well, it might be a little confidence boost and get him in a better groove going forward.
