Atlanta Braves Postseason Pace
For the rest of the season we'll keep a daily tally of the Atlanta Braves chances of making the post season, along with daily commentary. Also consider this a daily open thread for general chatting.
| NL East | W | L | PCT | GB | STRK | Magic Num | Playoff Odds |
| Braves | 79 | 59 | .572 | - | L2 | 24 | 90.4% |
| Phillies | 79 | 60 | .568 | 0.5 | W1 | 25 | 68.4% |
Wow, okay, it's starting to get bad, isn't it. We're just not getting timely hits these past couple of weeks. We're still getting folks on base, just not getting them in. One has to think this will eventually turn around. At least lets hope so.
Now we get to see how well this team holds together. As difficult as the nine-game losing streak was early in the season, this stretch may be just as difficult if not more so since the Braves are tasked with the pressures of defending first place. This is where Bobby Cox needs to earn his managerial stripes. Holding this team together and keeping them in first through this swoon will be a tough task.
Add to this bad play on the road the fact that the Braves don't have another off-day until next Thursday. They are in the midst of a 20-game stretch without an off-day, and are currently just 6-and-5 through just over half of those games. After these two remaining games in Pittsburgh, the team will come home to face the swoonier Cardinals and the pesky Nats before finally getting an off-day. After facing St. Louis for four games, it's NL East teams the rest of the way - the Marlins and Mets for three games a piece, and the Phillies and Nationals each for six games.
Let's see if Tim Hudson can play ace again today and get the Braves back on the winning side.
Craig Kimbrel and Cristhian Martinez rejoin the team today as Gwinnett's season ends. No Braves minor league teams made the playoffs this year. I can't remember the last time that happened.

Question for y'all
What’s up guys. I know I could probably find a detailed article on this, but I figured you guys would have the scoop as much as anyone.
Did the Fish give a reason why they opted not to do anything for Cox’s last game in Florida? I know the Phils plan on honoring him in some fashion.
by Chutley's Impressed by Mac's Speed on Sep 7, 2010 8:53 AM EDT reply actions
The reason is because Bobby C blasted Loria for the way he handled Fredi’s firing. Fredi is Bobby’s boy and even from the opposing dugout Bobby defended his guy. He ripped into Loria to reporters and obviously the Marlins did not forget.

Ah, I remember Bobby had some choice words at the time, but I didn’t make the connection that the episode was the cause of the snub.
Makes sense in a petty, unsportsmanlike way…
Much obliged!

And of course...
that could just be the cover they use, but they were too cheap to do anything regardless. That gives them an easy excuse, and I’m sure Bobby has had not so kind words about other organizations and their decisions through the years, but EVERY SINGLE one we’re playing this year has elected to do something. As Joe Simpson said, it’s just kind of par for the course with Florida and their organization.
And yet they have one more World Series ring than we do…
Huh….
Go figure….

Yeah, there are certain times where divisional rivalries need to be sidelined. The Brave’s last game of the season at the bank doesn’t fall in my season ticket package but my buddies and I made sure we got tickets because sometimes it’s just about being a fan of the game, and you’re not abandoning your team by simply acknowledging what someone has done for baseball.

"We're just not getting timely hits these past couple of weeks"
Well said. Ross said it even better postgame.
"Our thing is pitching and timely hits, and when we’re not getting timely hits, we’re not very good."
He is spot on. A good team with not alot of power and great OBP relies on timely base hits, not the 3 run homerun so with the Braves slumping in this category, as Ross said, they aren’t very good. Of course, this is a cyclical thing, so I expect the Braves to snap out of it. At least that is what I’m telling myself.
World Series-caliber teams don’t lose 3-1 against the Pirates, while leaving over 10 men on-base, with Tommy Hanson in a groove.
Let’s not pull a Padres. We have to get back on the wagon. Now. Whether we get to the play-offs via the division or WC doesn’t matter to me; just get to the play-offs.

I'm just saying...
People analyze single games way too fast and say things like “this is not a World Series-caliber team” …. When you watch every game of a baseball season you tend to forget that it’s baseball… the team that wins the world series probably only wins 60% its games.. so you’re going to look as bad as off kilter as the Braves did last night from time to time…
How about… up 1.5 games? http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PHI/PHI200809230.shtml ???

It makes sense. Yesterday Roy Hobbs wrote “We’re currently 8-6 against the Fish for the year, but the losses to them are almost always of the demoralizing,”. Funny thing, that is a .5714 winnig percentage against the Marlins. What is the Braves’ winning percentage for the entire season against all teams? .572.
Going 8 out of 14 is good enough for 92-93 wins. Might need 8 out of every 13 though from here on out to get to the playoffs. Still time to step it up.

No shame in getting beat by Brian Burres.

Look on the bright side
We’re bottoming out now so we can peak for the playoffs. Much rather get this out of our systems now.
Even brighter side
We’re still in first and aren’t the San Diego Padres
It's hard to say what's been most impressive. The seamless jump from AA? The ability to hit for average? The ability to hit for power? The 18 walks in 111 trips to the plate? The flair for the dramatic? When you're trying to isolate the most impressive aspect of Jason Heyward's game, there's a lot to choose from, and it's only been a month and a half.

The AL seems pretty set...
Yankees/Rays with the other likely getting the Wild Card.
Texas unless the wheels fall off.
Twins/White Sox for the Central.
Boston is kind of in there, but the chances either them or the Twins/White Sox only make the Wild Card if the Yankees or Rays collapse.
The NL, on the other hand, has all sorts of questions. The Reds seem like the lone lock, but the Cards can certainly catch them. The Phillies and Braves are tight, with the Padres, Giants, and red hot Rockies in the West. And the teams are close enough that the Wild Card is far from a sure thing.
Also a bright side
Everyday we can wake up and think “thank god I’m not a mets fan”

Do these playoff odds factor in the injuries to Chipper and Medlen? If not, the situation could be even more iffy than it already looks. Hopefully the team will win the next 2 from the Bucs then put the Cards out of their misery.

There’s something to be said for having to be on your game through the last month vs waltzing into the playoffs with a 10 game lead. We’ve all seen too many times how big divison leads translated to playoff success.

Huge win for Brian Burres today. Know why? #Pirates have used 11 starting P. They all had losing records – till today. (Burres now 3-3)
So he was their ace?
Good. Now we can win the next 2 easily.

Having Huddy on the mound
is always nice and hopefully we’ll put some runs on the board so we can get back on a winning streak. I think a reverse-Padres 10 gamer is in order. No problem.
Sometimes...
I read comments here and I think “Wow, with fans like these, who needs rivals?” Then, I go read the comments on the AJC Braves stories. Flipping unbelievable. Everybody here looks like a genius in comparison.

im agree with you for Lee
but we don´t have good options to play in CF and LF.
Ankiel – Horrible hitting, excelent arm
Melky – not horrible hitting, 1 trademark defense misplay per game.
Mclouth – horrible hitting, doesn´t throw the ball.
Hisnke – horrible since ASG, maybe before. bad defense
Diaz – inconsistent.
if we can combined these guys to make one.
Ankiel (arm) + Melky (contact) + Mclouth (speed + patience) + Hinske (LH + power + utility) + Diaz (RH + power).
Barry Bonds circa 1994?

but, the fusion is a switch hitter because of Diaz RH and Hisnke LH
so we can dump all these guys and sign Werth?
The only way we get Werth is if Chipper retires, because there’s no way in hell anyone takes DLowe and his contract.
For Bobby.

i know that, im just kidding
what would happen if somebody like Bill Gates buy the Braves Franchise.
Will we have chance to sign Crawford and Werth?
Well if a guy like Gates wanted to, then he could spend his money however he wanted.
And are you asking if we have a chance to sign Crawford or Werth as we stand now with Liberty Media? If so, it really depends on Chipper and Lowe/KK. If Chipper retires, there’s no doubt we could go get one of those guys. If FW could somehow deal Lowe or KK and not take any salary back, then there’s also a small chance he could get a deal done for Werth or Crawford.
I’m thinking there’s about a 10% chance though.
For Bobby.
by Scott Coleman on Sep 7, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions
really, im not excited about signing Werth or Crawford
im very surprise if we´ll try to sign one of them
We could split them in two...
Melky’s arm, contact, and switch hitting, with McLouth’s speed, power, fielding, and ability to take a walk. Then Diaz’s contact, with Hinske’s power and ability to take a walk, then Ankiel’s speed and ability in the field both glove and arm, and that’s like one Mickey Mantle and a 6-7 years ago Lance Berkman out there.
I just feel like every day this month, I'm gonna wake up feeling like we're not going to the playoffs
