Atlanta Braves at Miami Marlins, Sep 5, 2010 12:10 PM EDT

Win, please. That is all TC asks.

Apparently, neither of our pitchers have a face. That could lead to some control issues, but I'm pretty sure Rick Ankiel will still be swinging away like always.

Lineups in the comments.

First pitch is at 12:10. GO BRAVES!

Braves blackhole: Lowe, McLouth, Ankiel, Glaus, and Farnsworth

Bobby’s thinking: Play them more often than not because they are vets and they can easily get out of their funks. So what it’s been 4 month slump. They are good to go.

Me: Uggggghhhhhh!

by romone_braves91 on Sep 5, 2010 11:44 AM EDT reply actions

McLouth is playing because there is so much territory out there in this park. Any ball into the gaps can be a easy triple.

by fandave on Sep 5, 2010 11:47 AM EDT reply actions

Ankiel is better at that than McLouth...

I’m thinking the usual Bobby b team Sunday lineup, and he’s giving McLouth one last chance. A couple Ks with an 0-4, and he’s probably done starting. We really need two OF to step up with Heyward from Diaz, Hinske, Melky, Ankiel, and McLouth. That’s one thing we’re missing from a complete team.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 5, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

In spite of his offense slump, Ankiel covers more territory and WILL actually throw the ball in to attempt a play.

by Ivan the Great on Sep 5, 2010 12:26 PM EDT reply actions

A good question

If we keep resting our starters for the postseason, we may not even make the postseason.

by SS451 on Sep 5, 2010 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

The way the Padres have been playing I don’t think it’s that, but I want to kick the Phillies off of the division crown and get homefield.

Also, Ankiel sure as hell doesn’t need rest. He’s not exactly old.

by Ivan the Great on Sep 5, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't see what the Padres have to do with it

Their performance doesn’t affect how the Cards do, nor the Giants. Should the Giants’ and Padres’ records cross, we’ll just be playing against the Padres and Rox instead of against the Giants and Rox. And frankly, I wouldn’t want to bet that that the Padres are going to continue this collapse; they could be a very nasty “pennant” contender down the stretch.

by SS451 on Sep 5, 2010 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Ankiel definitely could use a day off

Even if I’d rather see Melky go to center and Hinske in left. Maybe Bobby is trying to figure out who to use those two extra slots on the playoff roster for (assuming we get in)?

Braves have made some strangest offensive plays this season.

Groundout RBI from 2nd base by Heyward
Double steal (2nd and HP) McCann and Heyward
Run scored from 1st base w/single by Heyward
GS w/3run deficit to win the game by Conrad
and now 2 runs Sac Fly by Mclouth

Random question:

The Marlins bullpen allows an outfielder, on a very, very high hit fly ball, to jump into the bullpen and come down with the ball, despite it not being in the field of play. Provided an outfielder was daring enough to do this, would it be an out?

by Ivan the Great on Sep 5, 2010 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

homer

must come down in play

by 15ks on Sep 5, 2010 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Their bullpen is in foul territory, not beyond the outfield fence. So by that logic, it would be a foul because it was caught out of play?

by Ivan the Great on Sep 5, 2010 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

my mistake, i thought it was beyond the fence

its a ground rule then, i assume its designated out of play. because you can go into foul seating to make a catch but never beyond the OF fence, but certain places are dead, i would assume a fenced bullpen is dead

"Never doubt Derek Lowe's ability to win despite himself."

by EricGreggWasPaidOff on Sep 5, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

So 393...

if he gets 25 more starts in the one hole, he can get there.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 5, 2010 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s assuming he’s not up again today. Say he gets 4 per game that’s 28 games. 5 is 22 games. He can get there. Also if he’s up in the .340s he may be high enough to factor in some 0fers

Carpe Diaz

by GoBravesNY on Sep 5, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

He can definitely get there...

just has to keep hitting in the process.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 5, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

And I'm talking plate appearances, not at bats....

I’m pretty sure it’s 3.1 PA per game, not AB. So the 502 is plate appearances, not at bats.

with what, 25 games left?

Doable.

Ofc

If he is far enough ahead, they will do the nifty adding at-bats scenario to see if he gets the title.

don't think that'll be necessary...

unless he sits more than expected (and it doesn’t appear like Troy is playing 3rd to take his starts). Now, it’s just a matter of keep on hitting.
