Open Thread 9/3: Braves at Marlins
Atlanta Braves at Miami Marlins, Sep 3, 2010 7:10 PM EDT
Alright, so this is a pretty big series. A bunch of Marlins were suspended for the fight on Wednesday, but they're appealing the suspensions. Awesome.
Kenshin Kawakami will be making his return to the mound for the Braves, and he's coming off of a pretty decent AAA-stint. Ricky Nolasco was supposed to start tonight, but he's out for the season with knee surgery. Andrew Miller will be making the start for the Fish and their 4,000 fans tonight.
Lineup:
Infante - 2B
Heyward - RF
Prado - 3B
Lee - 1B
Diaz - LF
Gonzalez - SS
Ross - C
Ankiel - CF
Kawakami - P
Bobby is giving BMac a ton of rest. That's good to see.
First pitch is at 7:10. GO BRAVES!

We HAVE to take 2 of 3 from this series
or we seriously risk losing our division lead
I just think it'd do KK a world of good to...
be walking to the mound in the bottom of the 3rd staked to a 5+ run lead.
First inning like so....
Autosingle > Autodouble > AutoPrado
3-0 Braves.

and unfortunately
when they need 2 consecutive bum spot starters, someone else benefits
Hopefully, ...
the appeals would be heard right before they play us at the end of the month. Would be fair to have Sanchez and the rest suspended then.
And they won't need two starters to replace Volstad and Sanbia...
MLB said the suspensions of those two will be staggered so not to overlap.
let’s get us a win, here

And, again, I’m just saying that he’s not a good GM.
"They should just give two ROYs in the NL and skip the AL this year." - KLaw
Let's see...
anyone who spends money and has been in the job more than 3 years? See Jim Hendry, Omar Minaya, JP Ricardi, even Cashman, Epstein, whoever is the GM for the Angels, Dodgers, Mariners, White Sox, and pretty much all of them.
So you’re saying that Omar is a good GM?
"They should just give two ROYs in the NL and skip the AL this year." - KLaw
You don't read too well do you?...
I said all GMs who have sign decent contracts, have bad ones under their belt. Hell, even Dayton Moore in KC has bad ones, and he doesn’t spend. Cashman has several bad deals, so does Epstein and all others. EVERY one.
Okay, you go ahead a spreadsheet all the bad deals those guys who you consider good GMs have on them, and I’ll check your work after the game.
"They should just give two ROYs in the NL and skip the AL this year." - KLaw
Cashman has Kei Igawa, Nick Johnson, A Rod, Granderson, etc
Epstein has Lackey, Beckett, Ortiz, Drew, Lowell, Matsuzaka, etc
The Cards have Holliday, Suppan, Lohse, etc
the Angels have Kazmir, Abreu, Hunter, etc.
Every GM allowed to sign large deals has bad ones. Find me a perfect GM with no bad deals in a large pool of significant sized deals, and I’ll check your work.
here is how to look at KK's
salary. take his salary per year divided by the runs he gives up per year and that will equal a low number. See how much better you feel. NOT

Hate Melky...
hate McLouth, hate Ankiel, hate KK, hate Lowe, hate Glaus, hate EVERYONE. For a first place team, we somehow have a lot of shitty players.
Such a harsh word. I try to never use it.
"Curve: The loveliest distance between two points." ~ Mae West
Just saying...
for a first place team, we seem to have a lot of hate for our players from those who claim to be “fans”.
KK
Cannot fathom why BC trots KK out after he demonstrates inability to
get AAA hitter out. Pennant is on the line. Cannot forget Charlie Liebrant
bless his heart asked to pitch in relief against winfield, puckett for no reason
other than go with the veteran. Wohlers was ready. Braves have several
guys who can step in as a spot starter but this would take stones.
No offense to BC, a great patient manager with an eye for talent
but at times too patient.

Or like the inx that made it happen
every game of NCAA I played against a best friend in college, it was back and forth with “Your the best, the champ, there’s no way I can beat you”. “No no no, you’re the greatest, you always win.” It was sick, and the same pattern happened maybe 40% of the games, I got up huge, 28-0, 35-0, something like that, and he’d grind his way back.
Most productive group of rookies in a league since?
There’s maybe 10+ rookies this year that in other years would have won ROY, Venters, Axford, Sanchez, Heyward, Garcia, Posey, etc
Votto isn’t a rookie
"A good friend of mine used to say, This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. Think about that for a while." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
Votto's been around a few years now...
I remember having him his rookie year in fantasy. He’s always been great, he just had to miss some time for injuries, and I think had either vertigo, or an anxiety disorder, or both last year or the year before, and it took him a while to get back.
Thanks for the info
I don’t remember having heard his name until this year.
Go Braves! Go Dawgs! Go Falcons!
You mistaking for the P Leake?
Votto is no rookie.
And add Storen as the Nats closer, Strasburg was productive when he’s pitched. For some reason, I think Aroldis Chapman is gonna be huge for the Reds, and may be a difference down the stretch being with all the days off in the playoffs, he can pitch multiple innings in relief and just be a huge difference. Is Mat Latos technically a rookie (50.2 innings last year)? I guess not because he’d definitely be in the discussion. But Ike Davis, Colvin and Castro for the Cubs, there have been a lot of significant producing players in this rookie class this year. A helluva lot.
Ike Davis has been impressive, probably would get more consideration if they were not so many good rookies this year.
Go Braves! Go Dawgs! Go Falcons!
So would Axford (closer all year)...
Venters (arguably the best reliever in baseball this year), maybe Starlin Castro too. And if Mat Latos had one less inning last year, he’d be qualified. Other than Neftali Feliz, I think the AL is pretty slim. But the NL is loaded. Just hope they don’t mostly turn to crap as some do.
This is kind of sick for Latos
even though I’m hoping for Heyward or Venters in my own selfish way:)

Don't you all realize, that regardless of the NL East Standings
It’s all going to come down to the 6 head-to-head games with Philly. No worries!

This is baseball, it happens
They are a division rival, I don’t care how good or bad a team is, in the game of baseball any team can win on any given night. Remember, the Phils just got swept by the Astros last week…

I'm not cutting them
I’m just saying we should have swept them and now the idiots are on our tails

You're point?
Or were you just being nice and giving us an update on tomorrows games??

For a minute there I thought you were getting worried about our season all crumbling down in a matter of one day

Just saying that at this point I'm not confident we would be the favorite to beat the Yankees if we played them in the WS tomorrow.

Did you expect us to be the favorite???
D-Backs weren’t the favorite when they won in 2001, Marlins weren’t the favorite when they won in 2003, favorites are peoples opinion, and opinions are like assholes…..

they had the best record and they were heavily favored
over the enemy who won the wild card

don't care about that
when we see them in the world series we’re playing at home anyway, it won’t matter

Don't forget though, that the Yankees play great on the road, and we play great at home. So something has to give.

but the difference between them and us is that
we have better pitching(and batting) and we would only have to see Sabathia twice

Dude, give it up
We all realize you have no faith in this team, “BravesFan2010” I’m assuming that means you became a braves fan in 2010, which makes a lot of sense right now, but FYI, our bandwagon doesn’t have room for you

IMO we had a better CF in Blanco than Ankiel, McLouth and Melky.
But we wanted a power guy in that position. Wren thought Ankiel was better offensively.
blanco isnt nothing special

+1
I would rather have Blanco over Ankiel. But that’s moot now. We have to live with what we have on CF for the rest of the season.
He's better than Ankiel now. He was a solid back up OF.
Unless Rick finds his power stroke, I’d take Blanco over him.
I know KK's record
But what is the record of the team overall this year when KK pitches?

only 3 wins
including the only one he did win (I could be wrong)

how many runs we´ve scored for KK during the season
it´s like -0.1 runs per game. with a avg of 1-15 RISP and 12 LOBS
Miller about to be 3-0 against us if we don’t come back here.

KK
He looked as if he had already walked 4 batters when he took to the mound in the 1st inning. He looked as if he did not have a clue. AHHHHHHHHHHHH!
why did they bring KK back up??
He was doing crappy in AAA. What’s the point of bringing him up?
Ridiculous. Let’s hand the Phils a free one.
shoulda let Beachy have the start.

Jesus. Where did all KK’s supporters go?
Lots of irrational hate for the man tonight. Maybe we can all start shitting on Glaus while we’re at it.
"Jason Heyward was a Greek philosopher reincarnated as a baseball player." - Don Sutton
I didn’t see the game, so I can’t say whether he did or not. And FWIW, in order to get a win tonight, he would have had to throw a shutout. Expecting your #5 to do that on a regular basis is the definition of insanity.

Trust me
He did.
"It was the worst celebration of all time. I got lost in the moment." - Brian McCann
Some irrational hate
Also, some perfectly rational disdain for his efforts tonight. It was Lowe’s spot, so I’m used to being in the soup almost immediately but, still…
Maybe it’s the layoff, maybe he was pressing but whatever the reason, he was truly bad tonight and I can’t see any reason he won’t continue to be so going forward.

where is the bench Heyward post?
it seems he can´t hit when that post dissapeared.
Bench Lee
At what point do we start questioning our Derek Lee investment and play Glaus or Freeman a little? In 12 games as a Brave he is batting .214. z
Down go the Giants
So…there’s that.
