Diaz batting third is about as weird as Melky hitting fifth. I'm a little perturbed that Melky is in center. If not for the Hinske heroics, Melky's terrible left field play would have been the difference in the game. Now he's in center! Add to that terrible defense an 0-for-6 collar against Miller, and surely there is a better option:

Who knows….I’d feel more comfortable w/ Ankiel starting (due to his arm and his avg against Miller), but whatever the lineup is, they need to score more than 3 today. Besides, the Cubs sweeping the Padres is hard to fathom….but what the hell, why not
It’s not hard to fathom the cubs sweeping the padres now that they’ve won the first two. All they have to do is win two in a row (which we just saw them do). The odds are just shy of 25% (assuming, reasonably, that the cubs have just under a 50% chance of winning each of the remaining games).
Well, with Young pitching tonight....
…against Randy Wells, I say the Padres have the advantage. It’s times like these that I wish the Cubs would’ve held on to Lilly…

Your biggest sample size is 13 PAs. Just gives us no data worth having.

For the rate stats you used...
principally OBP and SLG, the generally accepted point of stabilization is 500 PA. Get up over 100 and you at least have something worth talking about. Drawing conclusions from 13 PA worth of data is about as useful as interpreting bird entrails.
So yes, this does imply the conclusion that batter vs. pitcher stats are almost always meaningless, and that we actually know very little about how good any given batter is against any given hitter, in the sense of being able to project performance going forward. So it goes.
I get what you’re saying, and I figured that’s exactly what you would say, but I just refuse to be that curmudgeonly about it. You can use stats like this, you just have to be aware of their limiting value. Basically these are “popcorn stats.” Kind of like mindless movies (popcorn flicks). Fun to watch and look at, but not redeeming in any way except as a fun little detour.

But he was just making a point about his awful defense. He had a good night at the plate, but the chances of that happening on consecutive days are slim. His ability to play terrible defense is pretty consistent though.

It was nice for Melky to hit for one game, but I’ll put more weight on his level of play over the entire course of the year and hope he doesn’t start any more games.

Not singling you out, but your sentiment sparked this thought: Sometimes I wonder what people would say and react if game 7 of the World Series was in extra innings, and both teams’ benches were depleted, and the only player left was Melky Cabrera, and he was brought in to face like Grant Balfour or something in the 17th with the GW runner on third with two outs, and statistically Melky was (paraphrased) 1-for-22 against him with 17K and 0BB. Naturally there will be many cringing at the matchup, and the OT would be nothing but a bunch of miserable posters condemning the matchup, but then Melky goes to lace a clean single, and the Braves win the World Series.
If this scenario happened in any other time, it’s considered a statistical anomaly versus size of sample, an unsustainable pattern, and a lucky hit that won’t happen again. But in this particular instance, it’s the greatest hit in recent Braves history, and it doesn’t matter what happens next, because next is another season, and for this season, the Braves are champions.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Melky was on 2B when Conrad hit that triple....
It’s actually very difficult to score, regardless of the base the runners on, when the guy at the plate hits a triple.
Not to nitpick though. I’m glad Melky had a good night at the plate. But I just hate seeing him in the lineup every day.

Lowe needs to hold the Marlins....
…through the first 4 or 5 innings. If he can do that, I like the chances of the offense getting to Miller the 2nd or 3rd time around in the order.
But it would be so fucking nice to see the Braves put 5 or 6 on the board in the first couple frames for a change.
We would all love that

Has anyone noticed how they can’t get through a single game against the Braves without bringing up how Gabby Sanchez deserves the ROY more than Heyward? And I mean literally every game….
They’ve even gone on to say(about mid-season) that Sanchez has more upside of the two.

…because Posey may very well be better than Heyward. But if Heyward can stay healthy, there’s no doubt that he’ll be far and away a better player than Gabby Sanchez.

Posey is probably considered the better of the two if positional value is taken into account, because Heyward doesn’t catch. Beyond that I’d give the edge to Heyward, but it’s not a very big one. As of now their OPS+ is virtually identical, with Posey flashing more power but J-Hey having better on-base skills. Heyward’s power numbers were sapped by that injury period though, so going forward I’d expect him to be the better player, especially after getting on base at damn near a .400 clip as a 20 year old rookie. You can’t teach that, and he’s only going to get better.
Don’t forget that 30% of Posey’s PT this year was at 1B. Also, for what it’s worth, Heyward has Posey beat in WAR, although Heyward has 30 extra games.
I think it’s a potentially interesting debate—the problem isn’t in raising the issue, it’s the way the yahoo Gints radio guys act as if it’s some travesty that Posey isn’t running away with the ROTY.

There’s no way he can start the season as the 3B coach. I talked about it last night here, but he’s been absolutely horrible. He’s making quite a few bucks to be bad at a relatively easy job. I’m good at my job and I probably don’t make half of what he does.
So can we all apply to be the 3B coach next season (hopefully under Freddie G.)?

This team already struggles with RISP enoug without him constantly stopping runners that can score and sending runners that can’t.
I think letting the runners make the decision is probably more effective than Snitker.
