Around SBN: LeBron James Laughs In Kevin Garnett's Face

There’s no consistency in except for inconsistency in Bobby Cox’s managing style.

Seems to me most everyone is missing the point.  Look at the lineup last night, how many times except for the past two games have you seen Rick Ankiel in center and Nate McWaste in left? There’s no consistency in except for inconsistency in Bobby Cox’s managing style. If I were on that team and saw a player who’s hitting well below the Mendosa line starting I’d be disheartened and furious. You have players on the bench who have World Series experience, Hinske, a switch hitter Cabrera, not to mention Diaz and that’s the outfield you put out there? Oh that’s right Cox will use the 1960-70’s percentage platoon style of managing. The team is playing with no drive, why? Except for when some is injured or needs a rest there should be a steady lineup on the field considering the critical time of year. Some players due need a night or two off, Prado for one. You have Brooks Conrad who while maybe not the hitter Prado is would do a great job filling in. Freddie Freeman pinch its?  I could fill a page but I’ll get to the point; it’s my opinion that if Bobby Cox were not retiring and on any other team he’d be looking for a job. Hall of Fame manager or not I think his management style the last couple of years is outdated and does more harm than good. “Oh the players love playing for him; he’s a player’s manager.” Maybe it’s time the Atlanta Braves got a fans manager one who can light a fire under his players through inspiration and drive. At least for me the playoffs and World Series won’t be a total loss; I grew up just across the river from Philadelphia.

1........please.

A baseball diamond is, most simply, the intersecting of four 90-foot baselines, and, most powerfully, the intersecting of seemingly random lives.

Freddie Freeman pinch hits because no one on the team is hitting better than Derrek Lee right now. We just faced three ace-caliber pitchers and were predictably stifled offensively. This likely would have happened regardless of what you – a lay person with no major league managing experience – would have dreamt up as a lineup. Cox makes mistakes, sure, but all of this recent fire seems to come in light of being shut down by pitchers who have a tendency of shutting offenses down. Gee whiz.

Also, when you give a disparaging nickname to any player on the team, ie “Nate McWaste”, your argument loses a lot of credibility in terms of being grounded in any sort of logic.

Good on you for living in the Phillies hot zone. Now please go have sex with yourself and refrain from posting for a while.

Since he returned from AAA...

…McLouth has hit significantly better than any of our other human outfielders. Playing him against righties is a no-brainer at this point.

love the qualifier on outfielders…

Human outfielders….because Heyward isn’t human, amirite?

I'm sorry but McLouth is a flash in the Pan!

I’ve been watching and played baseball for years, his swing needs work, his throwing is atrocious (this is not the first game his throwing has been suspect, listen to Joe Simpson) and most of all the guy has no passion. The righty-lefty thing is kind of silly, Heyward plays every game, put the guy in who gives it his all and the hits will come, its called confidence.

McLousy!

He may have been trying to hit better, but you just knew that ball hit to left field last night was going to score the runner, because as I have said before, “McLousy is not going to attempt to throw anyone out at the plate!” He missed the cutoff man. Joe called it a “Rainbow.”

I’ve never been a fan of Cox’s tactics and line ups, but right now he doesn’t have a lot of good options when it comes to the outfield. Melky is a poor hitter and an out of shape, slow, often indifferent fielder. Hinske has slumped badly in the 2nd half. If Diaz’ last named was Francoeur, he would get crushed on Braves blogs for his hitting this year. Ankiel is worthless at the plate but is at least okay defensively. McLouth has actually been pretty good since his call up at the end of August, but he needs at least a spring training playing LF to be tolerable out there defensively.

If I were managing, I would try Infante in LF, McLouth at CF, and Conrad at 2B. But I can’t say that would definitely result in more runs scored.

Anyway it’s not just the outfield dragging the team down. McCann and Prado have not been hitting for much lately, and the defense has been horrible.

Good grief

By the title of this post, I thought there might be some legitimate criticisms being leveled. Not so much.

McLouth – forget the average; he’s our 2nd best hitting OF right now.
Cabrera and Hinske – WS experience? That apparently isn’t making them hit in Sept.
Lee vs. Freeman – that’s next year. For now, Lee is the right choice.

Now, here are the legitimate criticisms you should have been making.

Rotation: Bobby’s explanation for not juggling the rotation for the Philly series was this is “business as usual”. And yet, he in no way managed the series that way. Beachy gets pulled in the 5th having given up only 1 ER? Minor the next night in the 3rd having given up 3? The decisions weren’t particularly bad, especially since the bullpen did fairly well both nights, but you can’t tell me those were “business as usual” decisions. When was the last time Bobby pulled a starter having given up less than 4 ER earlier than the 6th? The answer is May 14. And then, in the 3rd game, he reverts to a true “business as usual” approach, pulling Hanson after 6 when he was still dominating. That’s inconsistency.

Defense: this is mostly on the players – Heyward’s drop in game 1, and I counted 5 missed plays in game 2. I say this team’s biggest problem in the playoffs, if they get there, is going to be defense, not hitting. What’s Cox got to do with it? Why he hasn’t tried swapping Prado and Infante is beyond me. Prado has made far too many mistakes at 3rd. And they both need some rest. He keeps playing Infante in hopes of getting him a batting title, and now he’s 5 for his last 31.

I would pretty much agree with all of this, except there is a risk in shuffling the rotation….our rotation is deeper than the Phils so there isnt as big of a difference between our 5th and our 1st starters, the difference for the Phils is huge, mostly because they have one of the worst 5th starters in the NL and one of the best aces in baseball. They had to make the move, otherwise they would be screwed, we didnt have the same need, because Jurrjens who was supposed to start isnt that bad if you remember. The only thing Bobby could have done differently would be to inject Hudson into the rotation. Because JJ and Hanson are two of our best starters right now.

So really the only knock is on the pitching and Bobby really didnt have to change much, because there isnt much to change…he couldnt have known JJ would hurt his knee two-three days before his start. so shuffling the rotation wasnt an option.

I think what i just wrote is incoherent and probably not able to convey my point…if you dont understand I will try again.

Really? No one else is going to say it? Ok….I guess I’ll be that guy. You don’t need that first in. There’s no consistency except for inconsistency. Read a book, Jethro.

Sorry that was a typo!

Not that it matters but I’m a published author, writing in the heat of the moment I missed it. Thanks for pointing it out.

It’s called copy & paste. It bugs me because I did the post in Office but I didn’t proofread very well.

Why not go for broke?

They can’t do any worse than they have been doing. Juggle the line up. Start Conrad a few times at third so Prado and Infante can either alternate at second or Infante can play the outfield where there will be two reliable bats. I know they were somewhat successful when Conrad had to start at third when Chipper went down with his injury at Houston. I know it would be crazy to start Glaus at third given his issues with the position in the minors and I doubt he’ll regain the same form he had in May. The lack of ABs will do that to a player. With how they have played as of late, why not? At least Conrad has the intensity I think most of the starting lineup tends to lack. I can only name three players I’ve noticed who show any kind of emotion during a game. McCann, Prado and Gonzalez.

WHAT

I really don’t see a problem with what has been going on. I think that we have had our best lineup on the field for the way that the guys have been playing. Diaz should ONLY play against lefties. Conrad is a pinch hitter, our infield is fine, dont let a couple of pinch hit home runs make him seem like a good answer. In the outfield Ankiel is our best outfielder with the best arm. I don’t see a problem with him playing most of the time, hitting 8th. McLouth deserves to stay in the lineup as long as he is hitting.

A healthy Phillies team is better than the Braves over a whole season, but anything can happen if the Braves make the playoffs. It just takes a couple hot hitters to win games in the playoffs. Coaching is not the problem. Heart is not the problem. When you don’t have power in your lineup, it takes at least 3 players that are hot to win consistently, and great pitching, They have not played bad, but neither pitching or hitting has really been good enough this month to win day in and day out. Play well for one week and they are a playoff team, bottom line.

What a joke

Well, if you don’t like the way Bobby manages, you’ll get a chance to sound like a moron about someone else next season.

by El Bravos on Sep 26, 2010 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

The Joke is on You

I’m sorry that you let emotion block your intelligence and sense of reasoning, however facts are are facts. 1, that’s right one World Series with all the talented teams he managed just about says it all. I have much respect and wish Bobby the best, overall he’s been a good manager. Over 2500 wins and counting, not many managers can put those numbers in thier resume; he will be in the Hall first ballot. That still dosen’t change my opinion in this post, by the way its Mr. Moron.
