Open Thread Overflow: Braves at Phillies
Jayson Werth's mythical three-run HR is the difference in a 3-2 score. Hoping for some more 7th inning-on scoring from the Braves to steal one back!

what happened to Minor tonight?
he sucks a lot or what?
Threw like 70 pitches in 3 innings.
He did do some good damage control until Werth’s 3-run homer though.
We found out that he is in fact a rookie.

Lidge doesn’t scare me. Our boneheadedness does. First the non-bunt by Minor that could have changed the game and then the horrible baserunning by Mac. We gotta quit making these mistakes if we are going to win anything.

I have him going tonight in a different league. It makes me sad that he got lit up, but oh well.

Actually...
the first two games were a lot closer than I thought they would be considering the pitching matchups.
Close only counts...
In horseshoes and hand grenades.
This had the feel of a Braves playoff series: all the tension and the excitement, all the hopelessness, the missed plays, and the knowledge that there’s no tomorrow.

we have lost the 1st 2 games because
Errors
Fail Baserunning
DP machine
we've won this year purely on starting pitching 1-5 and our bullpen
now Jurrjens and Medlen are gone. we can’t field the ball, or get a hit with a runner in scoring position. we have no shot even if we get in
i don't get the stupidity on here
we lose 2 games by 2 runs starting rookies with a total of 7 games in the majors and apparently we have no shot against anyone anymore
we have no shot vs the team we have to go thru to get to the world series

not the same team we beat back in july
Hamels is better. Oswalt in town. Howard and Utley healthy. Brad lidge is back to his old self. Braves minus Medlen and a healthy Jurrjens. a cold martin prado, a dead troy glaus. am i missing something?
The knowledge of how quickly things can change in a baseball season?
Or the playoffs?
Or that we just lost two close games while starting rookies against aces?
Hmmm… Yeah I’d say you’re missing a couple of things.

You're all being ridiculous...
They beat us… fair and square… we started a rookie… played them well especially against Halladay.
1. It’s not the end of the world
2. We still lead the WC
3. It doesn’t have much at all to do with their “high school ballpark”
4. Nor does it have anything to do with luck, they just outplayed us.
The Phillies ARE the best team in the NL league… we’ve played them two games starting our rookies against their absolute aces and come up two runs short two games in a row mostly because of stupid mistakes.
Calm down, come back tomorrow and root for the team.
Go Braves

I agree
Just doesn’t make it any easier for us to take. A loss is a loss and needless to say we are playing our poorest baseball in terms of months since April (2 games under .500 in September)

That was actually pretty fucking awful
and if we want post season success we have to be able to beat the Phillies. This was one of our last games, there are no positives to losing. So yeah, potential end of the world. We should of won.
There may be no actual positives to losing..
But it’s not hard at all to find positives in the loss…
If we start Hudson and he pitches well we could very easily have won that game…

GRRRR
Braves win this if Bobby brings in Moylan to face Werth instead of letting Dunn pitch to him.
Frustrating loss, but I’m starting to become numb to them, especially after last year.
The birth of Jason Heyward was God’s punishment for the sins of the people in New York and Philly.
That would be nice
But likely not going to happen. Momentum is a nice thing to take into the playoffs, and especially against another team that could feasibly be met in the NLCS, they’re going to want to step on our throats and demoralize us going into the postseason.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
I’m sure that they will rest their starters in that situation rather than risk injury.

was thinking the same thing
if nothing else I don’t see Manuel going out of his way to set up the pitching matchups like he did for this series.
also as an aside, if they do clinch (they being the Phillies) I’d prefer they did it before that series too just so they don’t celebrate on our field during a special weekend for Bobby.
Good thing Joe Thurston wasn’t on base.

So do we root for the giants to pull away now?
And just root for the Dodgers and Diamondbacks?

Two tough losses
The toughest part about these losses is that we really could have won both games but kept shooting ourselves in the foot. Double plays, missed signs, errors, and poor baserunning really killed us and just makes it that much more frustrating

100% agree.
there is losing and there is handing games away.
the Braves have handed the last two away.
Now my night is ruined

Yea it was a bit strange
Whats done is done but I can’t help but wonder if we had at least one vet going in this series that could give us more than 3 or 4 innings. Both games have been close despite rookies pitching

Maybe if we weren't leading the Wild Card.
If the Braves didn’t hold a 2.5 game lead in the Wild Card coming in, I think Bobby would have shuffled it. But with a 2.5 lead with 12 to go, he was willing to take the risk.
But look at this scenario now: Because the Phillies did this, they now have to run Blanton and Kendrick out their consecutively from now on.
This weekend, the Braves send their top 2 pitchers against the last-place Nats while the Mets get to face the Phillies’ two weakest pitchers.

Cheer for the Padres and Cubs.
If the Padres beat the Dodgers and the Cubs beat the Giants, the Padres move back 0.5 ahead of the Giants in the NL West.
More importantly, the Giants will be 2.5 behind the Braves in the Wild Card with 10 left to go.
If that scenario plays out, the Braves will actually gain a half-game despite losing.

Yeah you're right.
ESPN hadn’t updated their numbers when I last looked.
Hell, they still list the Phillies as having only 1 more home game this year and 9 more road games.

Despite those, the Braves did good to stay close up until the sixth.
I would’ve preferred Freeman’s first HR to be in a win.

LOL
McCann got the hell out of there without facing the media, eh? I would too after such a sloppy game. Passed ball on a non-swinging strike = bad night.

Oh boy
That was a damn mess. Missed signs, errors, 3 more fucking double plays, bad base running, the inability to get third outs and the inability to cash in on base runners. Honestly though, that was about what I expected. We have too many old players that have worn down to ineffectiveness and too many rookies who don’t have experience. We threw 4 rookie pitchers (Minor, Venters, Dunn, Martinez) and faced Roy Halladay and an already tough Phillies lineup that is fresh due to missed time, and on an incredible roll.
Yea this is dissappointing to me to
however on the bright side of it. Say the Phillies win the NL East and we win the Wild Card. If we make it to the NLCS we will have completely different games simply because of who’s pitching. This series we are catching the 1st 3 pitchers in their rotation however they are only catching one of our top 3 guys and thats Hanson tomorrow. These games would have been much different had it been Hudson vs. Halladay, Hanson vs. Hamels, and Lowe/Jurrjens vs. Oswalt.
I think all we proved tonight was that we can hit Halladay and yesterday we proved that our pitching can silence their lineup. In a championship game there is no way we see Dunn in there it would have instead been O’Flaherty or something.
All I’m saying is that I still believe we are the better team and we would have won had we matched up with their starters. However, no one seemed to agree with me when i mentioned skipping Minor and pitching Hanson and Hudson on 4 days rest.
Seriously? STILL believe they're the better team?
I mean, why even play the games. The Braves are the best AMIRITE?
when they get swept tomorrow are they still the better team?
Or is three in a row enough to convince the delusional ones
