Braves' Tim Hudson Wins NL Pitcher Of The Month

Per the AJC:

Tim Hudson was named National League pitcher of the month Thursday for putting up the kind of August that moved him into the National League lead for ERA and forefront of the NL Cy Young conversation.

Hudson went 4-1 with a 1.71 ERA over six starts in August. He allowed one or no runs in five of those starts. He finished out the month with a career-high 13 strikeouts in a 12-3 win over the Marlins on Saturday.

This speaks volumes for Hudson, and how valuable he's been for the Braves this year. His great season is also getting noticed by the fans, almost a third of whom in our poll earlier today named Hudson the team's MVP so far. Hopefully he can keep this up and continue to be that ace we really need right now.

This stat factors in batted ball data. Huddy has the highest GB% and lowest LD% in MLB. Here’s how he stacks up against the top-5 NL leaders in WAR (fangraphs):

Halladay – 3.15
Johnson – 2.78
Jimenez – 3.13
Wainwright – 2.86
Oswalt – 3.53
Gallardo – 3.72
Lincecum – 3.77
Hudson – 3.50

First, the last three are tied at +3.9. And the top 4 are head and shoulders above the rest. But it goes to show that some advanced stats really do like Huddy. I personally like tERA because it rewards pitchers with low LD% and FB% and high GB%; this is a formula for success, even if you don’t get a ton of k’s and maybe walk a few too many.

ppl should learn to take an aggregate of the available sources of data…
huddy has probably gotten a little lucky overall, but FG is undershooting how good he’s been

couldn’t agree more…for all stats you need to use as many as you can…especially advanced pitching metrics and probably even moreso for defensive metrics (anyone who focuses solely on UZR or DSR is severely hampered by the individual stats inadequacies)
