Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 9/1

Dan Nelson had a single and 5 walks in 6 plate appearances for Mississippi tonight.

Playoff Hunt

Myrtle Beach - Another Pelicans loss, and another Kinston win, put Myrtle Beach 5 games back with 4 games to go. The Pelicans have played 2 more games than the Indians, which is why they haven't been eliminated yet, but even if they win all of their remaining games, any Kinston victory will eliminate them.

Gwinnett 2, Norfolk 6

  • B. Canizares 2-4, 2B, .340 AVG
  • C. Sammons 3-4, RBI, .163 AVG
  • E. Cordier 0.2 IP, 5 ER, 2 H, 4 BB, 1 K, 67.50 ERA
  • C. Gearrin 3.1 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 3.40 ERA
  • S. Marek 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K, 1.48 ERA
  • C. Kimbrel 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 1.68 ERA
  • Erik Cordier's AAA debut didn't go well, as he walked 4 and allowed 5 earned runs without even finishing the first inning. Oddly enough Cordier said his arm felt as good as it has in years and his pitches all had fantastic break, he just had no command whatsoever. Fortunately he'll get one more start before the end of the year to try to finish on a high note. Cory Gearrin inherited a bases loaded situation in the first and allowed 2 of Cordier's runs to score on a soft single, but pitched 3.1 scoreless innings after that. Steve Marek pitched a perfect 8th, striking out the side in the process. Barbaro Canizares continues to amaze, actually raising his league best average. Clint Sammons has had a horrible season offensively, but he picked up 3 hits tonight.

    Mississippi 10, West Tennessee 1

  • Y. Gomez 1-4, 2 BB, .305 AVG
  • D. Nelson 1-1, RBI, 5 BB, .196 AVG
  • C. Colonel 2-3, 2B, .286 AVG
  • LV Ware 3-4, 2B, RBI, .571 AVG
  • M. Daniel 2-5, .252 AVG
  • S. McGill 3-5, 2B, RBI, .321 AVG
  • My. Jones 2-5, HR (1), 4 RBI, .222 AVG
  • JJ Hoover 5 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 6 BB, 6 K, W (2), 4.30 ERA
  • Dan Nelson nearly doubled his walk total for his time with Mississippi, taking 5 free passes in 6 trips to the plate, driving in a run with a bases loaded walk in the 5th. LV Ware rapped out 3 hits in his second game as an M-Brave and Myke Jones recovered from a poor debut with the team, clubbing out a second inning grand slam. Yasser Gomez has a .402 on base percentage in 105 at bats. JJ Hoover was much more wild tonight than he's been all year, for the season he's averaging 2.7 BB/9 and he gave up 6 in 5 innings tonight, but he was able to pitch around it, picking up his second AA win, his 13 overall of the season, giving him the organizational lead.

    Myrtle Beach 2, Wilmington 3

  • C. Miles 2-5, .251 AVG
  • P. Gosselin 2-5, 2B, 3B, .222 AVG
  • S. Sime 3-4, .257 AVG
  • M. Crim 5.2 IP, 3 ER, 11 H, 4 BB, 1 K, 4.87 ERA
  • Like Myke Jones, Phil Gosselin rebounded nicely after a poor debut with the Pelicans, rapping out a double and a triple in this one. After starting the season with a good showing, Cole Miles has tailed off and has actually done a bit worse this year than he did last year with the Pelicans. Sammy Sime started off strong as well and while his final season line isn't going to be very impressive, he's hitting .257 with a .651 OPS right now, it's still much better than he's been the last 2 years with Rome. After winning the Appalacian League Pitcher of the Year award last year the Braves were agressive with Matt Crim, skipping him over Rome and sending him to High A Myrtle Beach. The 23 year old's uneven, often inconsistent performance this year probably should have been expected, but is still a bit frustrating. After putting up a 3.18 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 4.8 K/BB last season, his numbers have jumped to a 4.87 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and 1.6 K/BB this year. The biggest difference has been the walks, which have nearly tripled, from 1.3 BB/9 to 3.5 BB/9.

    Rome 4, West Virginia 12

  • K. Rose 3-4, SB (26), .271 AVG
  • J. Terdoslavich 1-4, 2B, RBI, .339 AVG
  • R. Hefflinger 1-3, HR (6), 2 RBI, SB (2), .245 AVG
  • C. Masters 4.1 IP, 7 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 7 K, 4.26 ERA
  • Striking out 7 in just 4.1 innings is a great stat for Chris Masters, but allowing 7 earned runs in the same number of innings isn't. In his last 3 starts, Masters has a 9.60 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP. Kyle Rose cranked out 3 singles and stole his 26th base of the year. He stole 27 bases in 48 games last year, and still hasn't mached that total in 83 contests this year. Joey Terdoslavich has had a very nice debut season, hitting .307 with a .764 OPS in 65 games between Danville and Rome.

According to their website it’s Jake Thompson. He was the Braves 5th round pick in 2008. He was considered a first round talent but struggled in his final college season, mostly due to losing weight and stamina due to getting mono. His overall numbers for the year aren’t great, with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP, but he’s coming on strong at the end of the year, with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP since the All-Star break.

Of course, no matter who it was I’d suggest going to the game, because Minor League ball is fun and it’s always great to be able to say you saw the players on their way up to the Majors. If you can try to get there early and talk to some of the guys cause they’re all really great people.

Not too much left in the tank...

    Freeman is up.
Kimbrel is on his way up.
    Vizzy is basically shut down.
Delgado and Teheran are close to shutting down.

Time for some new guys to step up!

This late in the year it’s hard to make your stats look any better. Really, the only kind of results that will change anything are really, really poor performances.

Joey T. has done very well and I was also very interested in Joe Leonard’s progress, but see he’s on the DL and not played since 8/16. Any news on his status? Hopefully, not a major injury.

Also have a question about Willie Cabrera. Sometime in the last 5 or 6 weeks, he had a one week plus bounce up to Gwinnett and then was sent back down to Mississippi, after which he has gotten very little playing time. I don’t think he’s been DLed, but he’s not been on the pines. Whatsupp with dat?

    Willie C

Cabrera isn’t on the DL but nevertheless he’s injured. I’m told it’s a severely pulled groin muscle and those things can be tricky and take some time to come back from.

    Rose had another caught stealing...

    23 times is crazy there.

And Teheran hasn’t pitched since the 24th, is he done for the year? Pastornicky also seems to be getting squeezed for time by Myke Jones.

One other thing, the bench in AAA is apparently bone thin. Todd Redmond AND Lee Hyde pinch hit last night. Wonder how many times two pinch hitters have been pitchers, especially in a 9 inning game.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 2, 2010 9:42 AM EDT reply actions

The funny thing was nobody in the stadium knew Redmond was a pitcher. He’s a big burly guy and if you didn’t know better you’d think he was a first baseman or something. They both struck out and Hyde’s story was that he was looking fastball and got a slider. Pitchers…

The reason they even had to pinch hit was that Wes Timmons fouled a ball off his foot and had to leave the game, forcing designated hitter, and backup catcher, Orlando Mercado to third base, meaning the team lost the DH for the rest of the game. Mercado has played third 4 times this year, and never at all before this year, and he admitted that it’s a little scary.

Any chance they make some more manuevers...

just to finish out the year with a bench? Maybe reward a few of the guys from Danville with a couple days in Rome, and then fill up with one or two deserving guys going to Myrtle, then Myrtle to Miss, and Miss to Gwinnett, just to let teams finish out the year (and as said, a reward to those who’ve had good years). I doubt they do it, but as I already said, it’d be a nice reward and allow for depth to avoid such shenanigans.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 2, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

To illustrate my thinking (which I assume won't happen, but I like killing time)...

Keenan Wiley, Delgado or Gattis at C, and one or two of Frierson, Reyes, or Dalfonso to Rome.
Whitmer or Bethancourt, two from Terdoslavich, Cunningham, Hefflinger, etc to Myrtle, allowing Kreke, CoJo, or Gerry Rodriguez to Mississippi.
Then Eric Duncan, Yasser Gomez, or both can give Gwinnett an actual bench to work from in the last week.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 2, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Simple answer: No. The promotions we saw the other day, Cordier, Mercado, and Richardson to Gwinnett, My. Jones and Ware to Mississippi, Gosselin to Myrtle Beach, and Kleinknecht and Query to Rome are the only moves we’re likely to see. Most of the Danville guys are already back at their homes now. I would have thought that a guy or two might jump up to Gwinnett just to fill a spot for a few days, cause the Braves have done that before, but apparently it’s not happening this year.

    Thanks cb,...

I figured that was the case. Although maybe if Timmons is going to miss some time they have to do one more set of shuffling. Duncan and Gomez could give them the depth they lack, if they backfilled in up the line since Rome at the bottom could also use a little depth with Leonard, Weaver, RSF, and Flores on the DL.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 2, 2010 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

But, there’s only 5 days left in the season and nobody is going to the playoffs (I know MB has a chance but they have to win every game and Kinston has to lose every game and they still have Salem ahead of them to, so, sorry to say, it’s probably not gonna happen), so really, they don’t need any depth. Like I said earlier in the thread, they just need to finish the games out and make sure everyone stays healthy.

Agreed, but then as I've said a couple times now...

everyone isn’t staying healthy. Rome can probably use Cunningham in the IF as originally reported, but other than him they have NO one to turn to outside starters with Whitmer having to play 1st since Leonard, Weaver, and RSF are out. Adding a Simmons, Reyes, Frierson, or even De Los Santos, would at least keep them with enough players to field the team without someone grossly out of place. Myrtle and Mississippi are fine, although if Cabrera is not able to play that leaves them with only IFs to backup the OF. But Gwinnett is even worse than Rome, with Hicks out they have little more than a backup C on the bench, and if Timmons can’t play they don’t even have that. Even with Timmons, they could use one more warm body to make it through the year.

Oh, and starters on the sites for today:
    Jurik in Rome
    Spruill in Myrtle
    Thompson in Mississippi
    Redmond in Gwinnett

Simmons and Reyes played well enough to earn it...

as did Delgado and Gattis imo. Wiley would just be backfill, although he was the best of the Danville OFs statistically. And Rome could really use the infielders (unless 2 of Weaver and Leonard are back with Curley going up). Then Yasser Gomez and Eric Duncan could really help Gwinnett since they are sitting now with just Sammons or Mercado off the bench, since their now left with just Canizares, Thurston, Bolivar, and Timmons around the horn (and maybe not Timmons). They have a little more in the OF with Young, Ramirez, Clevlen and Richardson, but someone has to DH with no extra IF. Duncan could cover Timmons, or if he’s healthy allow Canizares back to his DH role with, and Gomez would allow Young to be the backup IF since he can play 2nd. If Timmons can’t play today, and they add no one else to the roster. I can guarantee the Gwinnett starters since they’d have no one else, and the only question would be Sammons or Mercado at DH with the other at C.

    Damn it, still has typos

the first paragraph is clean. The second sucks though…
“since their now left with” strike through their, make it they’re
    remove “with” after “DH role”
among other changes I’d make if I could edit it.

Basically, if Timmons has to miss time, Gwinnett could use both Gomez and Duncan (imo, the most deserving of those in Mississippi), and if not they still need at least one. They are dangerously close to putting pitchers in the field right now.

See above, the injury to Timmons made some shuffling almost mandatory...

and neither of those moves address the current problem spots with Rome and Gwinnett being down to basically starters only among position players. There’s got to be more to that, especially in Rome with Curley coming out of the IF.

And if Thompson starts today, I think it’s safe to assume Teheran’s season is done. That would give Thompson and Hoover 2 starts since Teheran’s last appearance, and his inning totals have gone from 15 to 81 to 137 this year.

Dan Nelson to Gwinnett. Guess they felt he was more deserving than Gomez or Duncan.

Looking at Rome, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Cunningham get some time at 2B. They really lack IF depth right now, and could use Simmons, Reyes, or Frierson.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 2, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

    Miles

While Cole Miles’s numbers may be down in Myrtle Beach again this year, it’s due to a fairly serious injury. In the season’s second game, he was plunked on the kneecap by a pitch from Wilmington’s Tim Melville which sent him to the DL for two weeks. He came back and was even leading the league in steals for a while, but two weeks ago, he went to the doctor and found that he’s been playing the entire 2010 season with a fractured kneecap. That injury is definitely rough considering his game is based on speed and quickness.

by fattums182 on Sep 2, 2010 10:37 AM EDT reply actions

Didn’t know about that. It definitely puts his entire season in a different light. He’s not a guy you really expect to drive the ball, so you’re right, slap and speed is his game and it’s hard to do that if your knee is messed up.
