Atlanta Braves Postseason Pace
For the rest of the season we'll keep a daily tally of the Atlanta Braves chances of making the postseason, along with daily commentary. Also consider this a daily open thread for general chatting.
| NL East | W | L | PCT | GB | STRK | Magic Num | Playoff Odds |
| Phillies | 86 | 61 | .585 | - | W4 | 13 | 95.3% |
| Braves | 83 | 64 | .565 | 3 | L2 | 19 | 68.2% |
Nuts!
Just about everything that could go wrong yesterday for Atlanta, did.
This makes the off-day even tougher.

how many of you here truly believes this team is going to the postseason…?
forget the ’’hope’’ and the ‘’i believe in my heart the could win’’ seriously… who believes right now this Team is going to the playoffs…..?

Yes
It will be a great year… because the phillies will only be able to afford a 10 man roster at the rate they’re handing out overpriced contracts!

Here's one...
don’t think the Rockies can keep it up, and see the Padres falling off with their tough schedule. We certainly need to step up our play, especially on the road, but it can be done.

Wow.
I had no idea such a book existed. Amazing. I love the irony of the title—-the phrase “It can be done” was the favored inspirational/motivational statement of my high school principal (at CCHS) and was literally how the morning announcements ended every day. I can still hear that: “And remember, it can be done!” said with as much sarcasm or contempt as the student reading the announcements that day thought he could get away with. It usually came out sing-songy.
ME.
I believe the Braves will be in the playoffs, and that’s not “blind optimism”. They are a good team and there are still two weeks left in the season. Baseball is a funny game, and a lot can happen in that amount of time.

I don't believe. Sorry.
If you look at the schedule and the way we have been playing of late then you have to think we will continue to fall in the standings.
1.) We are terrible on the road. We lost 2 of 3 to the pirates (each pitcher had an ERA over 5 at the time). I can’t expect it to get any better considering the way things have gone. Facing the Phillies and their top 3 pitchers doesn’t help us either.
2.) The Giants and Rockies are better than us…. right now. The Giants are the team to worry about the most. They have great pitching and their hitting has been really clutch for the past few weeks. If they keep it up they will pass us with ease. The Rockies have been killing the ball. If their pitching can hold teams down at all then they have a great chance of winning, BUT they have also played a ton of games at home lately. We will see if they can keep it up on the road. If so then we may be chasing 2 teams for the wild card the last week of the season.
Sorry, but i have to look at the trends of late.

looks like a gaggle of geniuses. They are the ones who predicted the Philly bats would start pounding out runs and the Braves relied too much on “lucky” hits to win games. Anybody else want to say how overrated ESPN is?

ESPN
has no idea what they are talking about….
Watching their “trade deadline coverage” they were talking about how the rays had too many “swing and miss guys” with high strikeout numbers. So they suggested the rays trade for adam dunn (a guy who his entire life has hit 40hrs with 200 k’s)….. and then i turned the tv off…

It is time for Bobby or somebody (Chipper?)...
…to step up and get this team back on track. The most worrying thing to me is that we are just not mentally there. We had an inning yesterday where our team didn’t realize that we had gotten three outs and it was time to leave the field. Where are our heads? Somebody has to get the team to refocus. And now.
I. Want. Phillie.
still can’t wait. those Phuckers don’t scare me. we just can’t let their lead get any more out of hand. and we also have to accept the fact that all the other teams in the NL East are essentially bowing down to them, and turning it up a notch for us. that’s fine.
all these negative nancies do need to chill the fuck out, tho. it’s baseball, not football. the balance can change on a daily basis.
If we can sweep the Mets, and if the Phils only win 2 games vs the Gnats, then that’s a start. And that’s not so far out of the realm of possibility.

No I came over here and thanked the Braves for making baseball exciting. Every game meens somthing scoreboard watching to see if the loss you just took is going to hurt worse cause the teams your chaseing won or the win you just pulled out will move you a game up in the standings. When you’re in first place with a big lead a loss dosn’t meen too much… Think about when the Braves had Phills by 7 games when the lead went to 6 games fans didn’t realy care cause it was still a 6 game lead.

Football Anyone?
Let’s face it, the Braves overachieved. All those 9th inning comebacks just covered things up for awhile. We all know Atlanta is all about football. Now it’s time to root for the Falcons, Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs.
I got an extra ticket for Tuesdays game up here in Philly. Anybody want to come up and watch Howard,Utley,Jimmy,Cole and the Roys stick a fork in the Braves?
Hey Chief Noc-A-Homa, why don’t you take a look at your lack of pitching/hitting as a reason why you can’t win. Don’t blame other teams for bowing down to the Phils as an excuse for the Braves meltdown. the Braves just travel to South Florida and lost 2 of 3. Phils just left and pounded the Marlins in a 3 game sweep.
It’s all about playing the best baseball at the right time of the year.
Hey Mguz, you joined the blog just to say that? lol. classic. A meltdown would be 3 games back with 6 games to go. the last time I checked, we’re 3 back with 15 to go.

Playoff (for the Braves) starts tomorrow
Realistically, we can’t imagine doing better than 4-2 (to gain 2 games) against the Phillies (and even that would be hard). The WC chase against the Giants means we got to start winning games and play with the playoff intensity. Pitching needs to be more consistent and better. Hitting needs to stop giving outs away.
by LEastCoastBears on Sep 16, 2010 11:07 AM EDT reply actions
there are enough games left
in the season to make the playoffs as long as the team changes their current direction. another 5-6 games like we have been playing and it could be all over. not knowing we had 3 outs yesterday is not the frame of mind you like to see. these next several games will be telling. i still dont see where any of the trades this year were a plus to the team.

Not that it's really important, but...
Those things are gauche. Almost as bad as the Marlins’ rings. I think Donald Trump designed them.
Supposedly Victorino and Utley are pretty good, but I’ve never seen it. At least not against the Braves. If anyone can sweep Phillie, it’s the Braves.

Depends on what kind of player you’re talking about. If your talking about seemingly can’t miss stud prospects, then you’re right, no one is close aside from Freddie. But most teams aren’t replete with can’t miss prospects. If you’re talking about guys who could contribute at the Major League level, there’s Brandon Hicks, Matt Young, Wes Timmons, Wilkin Ramirez, Jordan Schafer (when healthy), Barbaro Canizares, and players like Willie Cabrera and Myke Jones aren’t that far off from being able to contribute. And before you scoff at these players, remember that guys like Martin Prado, Matt Diaz, and Brooks Conrad weren’t very exciting to most when they were on the way up, but they’ve managed to make some fine contributions to a winning team.

This is all very reminiscent of 2009
The Braves dropped two of three to the poor-record San Diego Padres at home with 33 games remaining, and the entire sky fell. Sure, this is a much worse situation now, since there are only 14 games left, and the Braves are down three games, and only up a half-game on the Wild Card, but it’s still the same situation as it was then, as it is now, as it often is – there’s still time left on the clock.
Throughout the last 24-hours, I’ve seen many people declare that they’re done with this team – to them, I kindly ask of you to politely leave then, and and not opt to hang around and gloat about how right you’re being that the Braves aren’t going to make the playoffs despite the mathematics and trends, and statistics. Stats are wonderful things, but they still have zero control at controlling the outcome of a game; they assist make educated guesses, but it’s still a guess. The Cincinnati Reds had a 99% chance of winning with a six-run lead, but they still lost. The projected 90+ win Braves statistically should have probably manhandled the Pirates and Nationals, but they didn’t. Most Phillies fans probably like their chances with sending Halladay, Hamels, and Oswalt against us both at home and away, and why shouldn’t they? Statistically, they’re all stallions riding good waves of trends, success, and high talent. But who’s to say that someone from Jason Heyward or Diory Hernandez won’t just get lucky, and we take 4 of 6 from them, and suddenly we steal the division right back out from under them, and the Giants swoop in and secure the Wild Card? Statistically, none of that seems plausible, but it is impossible to decide that it is impossible until the last 14 games of the season are actually played.
I get it, I really do. I can commiserate, sympathize, and understand all sides of the constant arguments that have erupted post-Nationals series. Some want to really ride out their emotions, and some want to keep hope alive. Some refuse to believe that the season is definitively over, and others think that there is still possibility that the team will get hot. Personally, and honestly, I do not like our chances to see the post-season, but at the same time, I think it’s foolish to slander our players, declare them dead with heartbeats, and fight amongst my peers, because I don’t think any of that accomplishes a single thing. All I think it really does is puts me in a negative spotlight if all my pessimism is deemed correct, or makes me look foolish if the Braves suddenly turn around, and it’s in writing that I hated this team that I suddenly hypocritically are declaring love for and wanting Brian McCann’s babies again.
I won’t repost it again, but for those of you who weren’t around last year, I wrote this manifesto that essentially explains the importance of losing in sport, and how upsets and anomalies are among the factors that make it great.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Phillies fans
I find it interesting that all of the sudden, when the Phillies start winning, their lack of class and respect start coming out. Why do the Phillies fans feel the need to come here and gloat? For the record, I have no problem with the Chutley’s Impressed guy with coming over to exchange ideas (though, was he on the blog when they were 7 games out?), but for these other guys, why?
To the Phillies fans who want to come to TC to brag about how great your team is and trash ours, here’s what I have to say to you: There are still games left to be played, and frankly, even if we are eliminated before October 1, there are still games to be played. There are many of us who will still take pride in our team. Show some class. You are just fans, so stop patting yourselves on the back.
It’s mostly pathetic and embarrassing for them, if someone lost their job they’d probably spit in their face. I pray we don’t have many, if any fans, who do the same. It’s a disservice to good fans everywhere.
