Braves Lose 6-0 to Livan Hernandez, Nats

Livan Hernandez made quick work of the Braves on Tuesday night, and that's how we'll keep the recap: quick. There really wasn't much to say about the Braves in this one, to be perfectly honest, and it was all Nationals from the 2nd inning on.

Jair Jurrjens continued to get hammered, and gave up a 2-run HR to Adam Dunn that still hasn't landed yet. Estimates said the ball traveled 460ft., but it looked much farther than that on television. He also gave up a 2-out, RBI double to Livan Hernandez to drive in the game's third run, and then topped it all off by throwing Hernandez a hanging slider, which he hit out of the park to make the score 4-0 in the 4th.

The Braves offense had 5 hits tonight, and they were all singles. The Braves had one runner in scoring position the whole night, and that threat was quickly erased when Martin Prado popped up on the first pitch of the at-bat. Jason Heyward continues to be an incredible baseball player, and reached base all 4 times. .404OBP, what's up? Besides Heyward, the entire offense was busy either rolling over 2-0 or 3-1, 85mph fastballs down the middle or were swinging at 66mph sliders in the dirt. Good times.

Mike Minor vs. John Lannan, a soft-tossing lefty, in tomorrow's finale at 12:05. That should be fun.

Phillies won, but the Giants and Rockies both lost, so it's not all bad.

The Braves suck in the last few weeks

This team doesn’t look to be heading to a playoff spot.

At least the Yankees and Rays don’t throw soft-tossers out there. We should be gold for the World Series.

Suck!

You can’t but suck if you do not get a day to rest. Who made this schedule for the Braves? The Phillies? Last not looked so familiar, Glaus hanging his head and dragging a bat back to the dugout after striking out and McLousy swinging for the stars. Hey, but like Joe said, " he sure is swinging hard!" That should comfort us as we watch other teams in the post season. Now we are trying not to lose our lead on the wildcard.

I remember the Marlins doing that in '97

IIRC, Elton, who has a place in Atlanta and is a big Braves fan, told them to knock it off.

What!? The Braves get dominated by Livan? Eh, nothing new it seems. Soft tossing pitchers are our weakness lol

Tough game

JJ struggled and the offense did the same, except Heyward of course. If we win tomorrow, everything will be fine and if we don’t Ithink everything will be ok, but I don’t expect that to happen

I posted this in the open thread

But what do you think about a lineup change?

1. McLouth CF
2. Infante 3B
3. Heyward RF
4. McCann C
5. Prado 2B
6. Hinske LF
7. Gonzalez SS
8. Freeman 1B

May not be ideal, but I feel like Bobby should do something. 15 straight scoreless innings and the team hasn’t looked right in almost a month.

even when mclouth's been right lately

its been for power. i wouldnt lead him off

agreed...

that’s a bit risky considering he just got back to hitting again, especially when he’s seemed more comfortable lower in the order (remember Bobby tried to start him out lower last year, but we had no acceptable leadoff man and he was needed to fill that void).

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 15, 2010 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions

i dont mind a lineup change

however i disagree with your proposed lineup.

Prado 2B
Infante LF
Heyward RF
Lee 1B
McCann C
Glaus 3B
McLouth CF
Gonzalez SS

by drumzalicious on Sep 15, 2010 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I like that one

We need to have Lee in the JHey/Mac sandwich and having Glaus, then Nate, follow makes it hard to counter them with a specialist in the late innings.

by Sam Jethroe on Sep 15, 2010 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Really?

You’d put Troy at 3rd? I mean, did you not watch him play 1st from June to August? He could barely move. It’s almost painful to watch him run the bases too. And you wanna play him at 3rd? He made like 17 errors in a week in Gwinnett, not to mention EVERYONE who saw him play talked about how bad his defense was.

There’s no way in hell Troy should come anywhere close to 3rd base. And as I’ve been saying for weeks now…

Prado – 3B
Infante – 2B
Heyward – RF
Lee – 1B
BMac – C
Gonzalez – SS
McLouth – CF
Diaz/Melky – LF

is the lineup we need.

That's fine, too.

We’ve got consensus on the first five. That’s the important thing.

at this point

the way our offense is playing and our pitchers are giving up runs like its candy i say we just go ahead and bring out all the guns lol.

Seriously on games where Hudson or Lowe arent pitching I would try Troy out for a few games at 3rd then replace him in the later innings. Put Infante at 3B, Ankiel in CF, move McLouth to LF then Freddie at 1B and thats some defense!

I don’t care if we win the division i just wanna make the postseason i’d rather be the underdog than the team people expect to win it all.

You would have never survived the 70’s or 80’s Braves teams.

No velocity on fastballs, no break on breaking stuff. Jair looks tired and done.

by CharlotteChop on Sep 14, 2010 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

I hate to say it but, this team looks like they have run out of steam. That’s not to say they won’t turn it around, but it’s not a good sign. Hudson and Jurrjens look tired. Jurrjens picked a bad time to throw belt-high strikes. The offense is flat. May was long ago.

For some reason, Bobby won’t change up the lineup. I’ve said over and over again that Prado should be put back at leadoff, and Heyward should bat third. I would also put Glaus in the lineup some. It’s getting too late; what would it hurt? Our offense has sucked.

If they don’t make the playoffs, they sure did give us an exciting regular season to remember. Hope they prove me wrong and rattle off five in a row, but I’m not holding my breath.

13-14

When Martin came off the DL he went right into the 3 hole. Braves were 70-49 at the time, now 83-63.

24-20

Not much better than above, but it’s the correct answer. Prado was removed from the leadoff spot after July 30, when he injured his finger.

I was angling

More for the idea of him batting someplace other than the leadoff spot, not so much about him just missing in action. For the purposes of my question, I think 13-14 is closer to what I was looking for. The point being that hitting him third and Heyward second isn’t getting it done.

by Sam Jethroe on Sep 15, 2010 1:39 AM EDT up reply actions

there are 2 players

not in the lineup now that were instrumental in getting us and keeping us in first place for so long……Glaus and Chipper. TOOOOOO many holes in the offensive lineup. gotta switch it up and see if something else works. whats to lose by doing it. Seems to be too much concern over how comfortable a player is in the batting order.

by llabyug on Sep 15, 2010 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I think you can add a third player

Meds.

It’s pretty obvious that Prado in the 3 spot doesn’t work, but Prado in the leadoff spot does. I think Bobby has become far too locked in to Heyward hitting second.

by fylr71 on Sep 15, 2010 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Heyward can hit

anywhere in the lineup- just needs a good hitter behind him so he sees good pitches. heyward is your best power hitter – hitting second?

by llabyug on Sep 15, 2010 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions

well

when Chipper was in the lineup it was understandable. But now I’m just confused. Heyward is about the only person on this team that should hit 3rd.

I believe they were hoping Lee could come in and hit 3rd and they would drop Infante down which I still think they could try.

Prado
Heyward
Lee
McCann
Gonzalez
McLouth
Melky/Diaz
Infante

its an ok lineup

One other question about Jair...

Did he at any point in the last few starts get hit with a line drive? I noticed watching the highlights on mlb.com (didn’t see the game) that on hard hit balls once contact is made he is flinching. Did it with Dunn and then less obviously on the double by Livan. Earlier this season when Lincecum was struggling the Giants announcers were talking about him being hit by a pitch in a start and subsequent flinching in future starts. This, to them, signaled a timid approach which caused more trouble with fat pitches catching alot of the plate? Not sure if that’s the case here or if Jair was just making sure to get the hell out of the way just in case Dunn’s HR especially was coming back at him.

Just wondering.

Dunn's homer

They kept saying it landed right behind the seats, but after studying it over and over again through the magic of DVR, I believe it hit the Tooner Field wall and actually bounced back towards the field. If you look quickly, you’ll see a guy standing by the wall, looking up at it like something just hit it.

Pitching...

Our consistent starting pitching has gone South. You can survive inconsistent hitting, but our starters have been awful the past month. I’m not surprised the bats were lifeless after JJ gave up three runs and then a HR to the pitcher. JJ hasn’t been able to protect a 9 run lead.

JJ is one of our biggest disappointment this season.
