Open Thread 9/12: Braves vs. Cardinals
Tim Hudson and the Braves go for the series victory tonight over the Cardinals at 8:05 pm EST. Hudson has been tremendous this year and Kyle Loshe has most certainly not been. The Phillies have already won against the Mets so the Braves need a victory in order to remain tied for first place. The Braves are going with a fairly normal lineup and so are the Cardinals. Let's take it to them.

Timmy turning in
The kind of performance he’s capable of, at this stage of the season on a national broadcast, could really burnish his Cy case. Obviously, that’s secondary to winning and we’ll all take a DLW from him, but it would be nice to see him eat these guys up in the bargain.
Any other year, no question Tim would get Cy Young. This year, he is in an uphill battle. I think Doc will get it. Leading in the “categories” that the voters love.

I thought Roy and Wainwright were neck to neck
in almost all of those categories.

Have a look
http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2010-pitching-leaders.shtml
Those last 6 categories are what I meant by Roy doing so well in the advanced metrics. He’s got a number of traditional ones nailed down, too, so I think his case is pretty solid.
I want Tim to get some votes and if Halladay falters a bit, I still think he could pull a ’92 Maddux and sneak in.
I want Hinske in left today....
He hits Lohse pretty well(yes, small sample size) and got arguably the biggest hit yesterdy before Gonzo’s 3-run blast.
Hinske
Slowly but surely lost his starting spot (against RHP) in LF.

That’s true. Ankiel is only a viable option as a late inning defensive replacement or pinch runner. One think I will say is that Nate better not hesitate to throw the ball in from the outfield when the game is close. I got so sick of seeing him just stand there while a runner stretched a double into a triple.
Not only is this game huge in real life...
But me making to the championship in fantasy also depends on Kyle Lohse NOT getting a W tonight.

I mean, it’s obviously working as is. His walks actually serve much better in the 2 spot than the three spot, and hits like that are great for when Infante is on ahead of him.

He’d be right there in the Triple Crown hunt. Of course, the Triple Crown uses stupid numbers, anyway. Tulowitski has 20 points on CarGo in terms of OBP.
It doesn't matter... because he missed those 30 games

Yet he's still right there in terms of overall value
Check it out. Higher WAR than CarGo, he’s less than half a win behind Pujols, and his wOBA is actually higher than Pujols’. And he’s a shortstop. He’s been huge for Colorado’s resurgence in that NL West race.

Why? A tennis ball is going nearly 20 mph faster than a baseball, and roughly the same size

by EricGreggWasPaidOff on Sep 12, 2010 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Further away, plus you’re playing it on a bounce, after it has slowed down. Plus, they have to serve into a certain area or it doesn’t count at all, plus they don’t grip and can’t put the same kinds of movement on tennis balls that they do on baseballs. Plus, Tennis racquets are broad and have nets in them.
The endurance alone to play a five set match in tennis
Not to mention reflexes and skill necessary to actually be good
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
i agree with the endurance part
but i think the argument re: hitting a baseball is that it’s the hardest skill to master
100 mph serve has the same reaction time as a 90 MPH fastball
Obviously people can exceed these speeds. Tennis players have an advantage with a racket as opposed to a round bat, but baseball don’t have to cover 40+ feet on a serve.
Well, hitting the respective balls with the respective tools is easier—the racket is bigger and the golf ball isn’t moving.
But hitting them to get the intended purpose—well, that’s up for debate.

What if the Braves had an infinite source of cash for player revenue?
Then it really wouldn’t matter who I’d trade for, since if I had any problems, I could just sign the top free agents the next offseason.
I refuse to pretend that contract and financial situations don’t exist. If i had one month of Pujols now versus one month of Heyward now, I’d obviously take Pujols since he’s by far a better hitter at the moment. But the cost efficiency of Heyward over the next five years plus the fact that Pujols should be in his decline phase make Heyward superior. At some point, though, Heyward will probably become very expensive as well.

Youve seen a braves game this year right? We have no luck… we only have big games with bloops… line drives we lose every time
by SuperHeyward on Sep 12, 2010 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions
i mean.
Pujols is kind of the best hitter in the league . . . at least it isnt Carpenter hitting HRs
yep… he just also pretty much assured there won’t be a triple crown… unless Car Go hits like 10 HRs in 17 games

Well it IS only the fifth. I’m frustrated too. But we don’t need to freak out.
Of course, we ARE the worst team in the history of baseball.

Like most things, it got crappy eventually (most recent season).
But decent enough until then.

Tim Hudson has not been the same in his past 3 starts.
If he doesn’t turn it around our season will be going down.
Also, why are there so many damn Cardinal fans in Atlanta?
bandwagon

Last 8 games he has pitched...
4-1, 3-0, 1-0, 3-2, 4-5, 12-3, 2-4, 0-5, and tonight….
People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.
feel like if rasmus misses the nate homer, this might not have happened

why do we pitch to Pujols and Ryan Howard?
It’s retatrded. If a team has ONE guy that kills us every time we should pitch AROUND them.
sigh
I'm wearing out my mute button..
Listening to these lame announcers.
NATE MCLOUTH!!!
That’s what i like to see. nate gets robbed and comes back by hitting another blast. Nate says “screw you guys”!
