Alex Gonzalez Hits Walk Off Homer, Braves Win 6-3

All Alex Gonzalez needed to do was hit a fly ball, and he surely did that. He got all of a Mitchell Boggs pitch and won the game with a three run shot after Rick Ankiel walked and Eric Hinske singled. It was just another dramatic last at-bat victory for the Braves, who are now tied for first place once again.

Tommy Hanson pitched well as the starter, going seven innings and allowing just two earned runs on an Albert Pujols double. Jonny Venters got credited with a blown save after allowing the tying run to score, but most of that was Martin Prado's fault for making a throwing error earlier in the inning.

The rest of the Braves bullpen was virtually flawless. Peter Moylan, Billy Wagner, Takashi Saito, Kyle Farnsworth, and Craig Kimbrel combined for 4.2 scoreless innings with just one hit and one walk allowed in total. Kimbrel earned the win with a scoreless inning which featured two strikeouts.

The Braves opened up the scoring in the first inning with a bases loaded walk by Nate McLouth. McLouth added an RBI triple later in the game and seems to be back on track, which is an absolutely great sign. Jason Heyward homered in the bottom of the seventh and made a few solid defensive plays as well as he continues to make his push for N.L. Rookie of the Year.

Tomorrow the Braves can win the series with Tim Hudson on the mound against Kyle Lohse. Lohse has had a rough season to say the least and Hudson has certainly not. This pitching matchup definitely favors the Braves, so hopefully they can finish off the Cards tomorrow afternoon.

it’s kinda sad to think that we have to skip 2011 to have the “ultimate team” due to the veterans (Lowe, KK, McLouth) are holding us back from the future.

by romone_braves91 on Sep 11, 2010 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I rather eat 10-15M of Lowe’s contract. We have more money to spend and so we could get Crawford. And if we ate 80% of his contract, we would be paying 24M out of his 30M contract, not going to happen

This.

I’d love to see them both heat up, and if Freeman would get some more at bats I’d be happy as he is silky smooth in the field, but if Lee gets going you just can’t take him out. No complaints at this point. We’re winning, however Big Red may end up sacrificing something for a W soon

I say

that he sacrifices Lowe. The problem with Freeman is that, although he has an extremely bright future ahead of him, he does not have above-average MLB power or above-average MLB plate discipline. The one thing that he does well (on offense, right now) is make consistent contact with the ball. He isn’t doing that right now. I don’t think that he’s going to help the team that much down the stretch…

Lowe would be worthy. That ‘sinker’ is a physics experiment gone wrong. You’re right about all of that. I’d be interested if more appearances would help him out, but if Lee hits well then keep him for a bat and late inning glove as seen today.

Gonzalez stats with Atlanta:

.267/.327/.414/.741 with 4 HRs and 27 RBIs coming into today.

Today, he went 1 for 6, but added a HR and 3 RBIs.

So that’s 5 HRs and 30 RBIs in 53 games now. Extrapolating that to a full season in Atlanta, he’d be around 15 HRs with around 90 RBIs (yeah, yeah, I know – RBIs are a poor performance indicator). Since leaving Toronto, his slugging is down, but his OBP is up. He’s been a decent pick-up. I can see him staying in Atlanta for next season.

Baseball is a crazy sport...

We lose Pirates series and lose the first game of the Cards and out of nowhere the Braves are “fading” and “are going to be the team left out of playoffs” (thank you ESPN experts). Now the same Braves win two in a row and now we have the best record in the NL (screw tie. We are winning the overall series vs. Phi 7-5). It’s funny how things work out. allow me if you will...

to point out the point where Philly lost 4 to the Astros…you’re right, its a crazy game. I know Philly Phans who were as nervous after that as we were after the Pirates.

The thing is, I hate ESPN but it’s really the only sports network out there. I watch it for the highlights and news, but I hate their “analysis”…I like Tim Kurkjian though.

I've talked MLB Net up here

But they’ve really rubbed salt in my eye lately by giving Eric Byrnes so much screentime. He’s making me appreciate the relatively reserved and dignified moves of Rex Hudler.

As for ESPN, they’re pretty much a joke. I like Tim and I’m more or less okay with Olney, but for the most part, they think of baseball as something to be put up with until football season starts. Then, other than daily episodes of As The Yankees n’ Sox Turn, it’s the functional equivalent of polo as far as they’re concerned.

Stars might be aligned for Sunday night's game

Hudson >> Lohse (getting Hudson back in the win column would be huge)
Cincy won again tonight on a walkoff (Cardinals might be feeling rather discouraged)
Sunday night baseball (late getaway game for the Cards and the Braves actually stay at home for another series)

We would really need to take advantage of our 10 remaining home games.

Between 3rd and LF for the big walk off. What a great ending, especially since we decided to beat the storm out no matter what at the end of 12. Hit the first bus out, got the MARTA and made it to Decatur Taco Mac then Brick Store Pub to celebrate. Tied for first, take it back tomorrow!

Was at the game

Standing room only folks! That’s how it needs to be from here on out! Hanson pitched great today that double by Pujols was maybe the hardest hit ball all day off him. Also BC really needs to let Venters rest! Heyward’s HR was smoked too!

by Jay212033 on Sep 12, 2010 12:51 AM EDT reply actions

Oh and

LaRussa had a valid argument about the play at 2B when Gonzo tried to fake the runner like he had the ball so he wouldn’t advance to 3B. Gonzo actually touch the runner without the ball, the runner should’ve been awarded 3B.

by Jay212033 on Sep 12, 2010 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

He wasn't going to third.

He had already stopped. He would have been out by 75 feet if he’d tried to advance. The only thing Gonzalez really got out of it was the satisfaction of being rotten, which is something Tony “Catcher’s Box” LaRussa has a virtual PhD in.

by Sam Jethroe on Sep 12, 2010 5:08 AM EDT up reply actions

he touched him but did not prevent him from going to third. The runner could have ran to third if he knew what was going on

I see a lot of people bitching about how ESPN counted this team out...

But I can’t even begin to comment on how many people who comment on this blog started counting this team out over the last few days. The series against the Pirates… the beginning against the Cards… the Marlins loss… can we get on board now? For real please?

I hope everybody saw the AJC tweet of the Brooks quote…

“We won’t quite. We never will.”

The team feels this way… and as fans we need to feel this way about the team and our fandom… Let me let you in a secret… WE ARE GOING TO LOSE A FEW FOR GAMES BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR… but it’s not going to be the end of the world. These aren’t the 2008 Braves… these are 2010 Braves… and they’re going to be there until the end, the very last at bat… and we need to be there with them.

…And yes, I’m a bit drunk right now

First ever Talking Chop post

Hey guys, nice to break the seal on my TC registration with such a monumental game. Been following the Braves for more than 5 years during my night shifts in London, UK and happily gorging myself on MLB.tv now it is up and running. Made my first live game ever (the weekend series against the fish at the end of last month) and have to say its well worth the sleep deprivation during my non-shift days. Go Bravos.
