Braves Roll Again 4-1

Tommy made it look quick and easy in tonight's 4-1 victory.

Tommy Hanson, Omar Infante, and Jason Heyward won tonight's game against the Mets. The Braves had just 11 hits tonight and seven belonged to Heyward and Infante. Hanson allowed just one hit and one walk over seven dominant innings. The Braves also got out to a lead very early and made it seem like a relatively easy game from then on out.

These are the types of games you love to see as September begins. Quick and quiet victories with a few players carrying the team, and the best part is that this team usually has a different few players contributing each night. That is, except for Infante and Heyward as of late.

Before tonight's game, Heyward was batting .486/.568/.919 since August 22. He had four hits today and four RBI, including doubles in both of the Braves run scoring innings. Infante had a three hit performance with two runs scored and an RBI -- a clutch RBI with two outs. These two have been great at the top of the order all season and are one of the best combinations in the game today.

Hanson's game shut down any questions we have had about him over his past two starts. The only hit allowed was a double by David Wright, which was his first hit in Atlanta this season. He was 1-32 at Turner Field before the double. Hanson also allowed one walk to Chris Carter, but was able to retire every other batter he faced.

Jonny Venters allowed a run in the eighth inning, with Hanson being pulled after 96 pitches. Billy Wagner came on in the ninth and earned his 31st save of the season.

The Braves are ahead in the series 3-0 and go for the sweep tomorrow with Tim Hudson facing Johan Santana, a matchup of each team's ace.

Two balls hit VERY hard. Thought they were both hits (I literally said “OH SHIT!” at the second), but unfortunately they were hit right at people.

I will admit, I loved Rocker for what he did on the field….off of it was unacceptable, but he never did near as much on the field as Morgan has done in the past week. And to have Riggleman sit there and defend him for charging the mound after all the shit he did to deserve both those pitches thrown at him, I don’t agree, but that’s just my opinion

what else happened this week with Morgan?

by traphicg on Sep 2, 2010 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Some of it is really blown out of propotion, I think

He rammed into Bryan Anderson, the Cardinal’s catcher, on either Friday or Saturday, and it was a cheap hit-the catcher didn’t even have the ball, there wasn’t a play at the plate, and to top it off, Nyjer didn’t even end up touching home. His manager suspended him for that because he didn’t want Morgan to take one in the ear hole.

Then, Tuesday night, in a 10th inning game, he collided with Brett Hayes at the plate in a much more legitimate situation, trying to score from second in the extras when the throw had beaten him. He did some damage to Hayes, though, who suffered dislocated his shoulder.

So in the fourth inning tonight, the Marlins were up big and beaned Nyjer when they had a 16-4 lead. Nyjer took advantage and stole two bases before coming around to score. I really don’t know why the Marlins should have a problem with that-I guess you shouldn’t be playing to win after you get beaned? Regardless, they threw at him again, and he wasn’t going to put up with it since he felt he’d already taken his licks, so he charged the mound and it was a pretty nasty brawl.

by Bronn on Sep 2, 2010 2:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree wth every word of this

I guess he’s supposed to just acquiese to being ten runs down and stop trying.

He’s got plenty to answer for and be criticized over, but stealing two bases when you’re behind is most definitely not one of them.

by Sam Jethroe on Sep 2, 2010 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

He got beaned, took his base and moved on. Don’t fault him for stealing bases when they are down runs. If they were up by 10, different story. The 2nd attempt by the Marlins to hit him was stupid and I don’t blame him for charging the mound. Hopefully Gaby Sanchez will be suspended for this.

Frank Wren has a similar sense of humor as the TC community

If you’re a big-name rookie making your first big-league start, this isn’t the city for you. Jason Heyward’s three-run homer on his first swing on Opening Day set the bar almost impossibly high. I mean, what was there for poor Freddie Freeman to do except hit a grand slam on Swing No. 1?

And if Freeman didn’t, Frank Wren was asked, what would be the Braves’ reaction? "Send him back," Wren said. "We can still send him back."

His magic number is 36

Right now. 36 hits gets him to .327, assuming the rest of his PAs are hitless at bats. Joey Votto is the current leader at .325.

So, 26 hits in 29 team games. Completely doable, assuming he doesn’t get a ton of rest days.

by Bronn on Sep 2, 2010 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

i've been listening to the SNY announcers

and they keep mentioning something to the effect of 40 PA’s qualifying him for the batting title. according to ESPN, infante has 350 PAs. at 502 appearances per game to qualify, there’s no way they’re accurate. maybe 40 hits? if he gets 40 hits in 90 more PAs (about 3 per game), that puts him at .365 ish (161/440). If the rest of the theoretical ABs are accounted for, he’d have a batting title entry of .320 (161/502), which is lower than votto at the moment.

Long story short: it’ll be tough. it seems to me he’ll need to hit about .500 the rest of the way to qualify and get no days off, unless i’m doing something wrong here.

how did you arrive at 36?

by pfoley on Sep 2, 2010 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

of course it’s entirely possible that espn reports ABs, which walks and sacrifices etc don’t count towards, and not PAs, in which case infante might be 40 PAs away, though i doubt it. does anyone know where i can find accurate PAs for infante?

by pfoley on Sep 2, 2010 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

according to baseball-reference.com

He has 370 PAs and 346 AB with 118 H, giving him a .341. Now you can do the math. We can assume that he probably won’t hit 502. So lets say that he then gets 36 hits. that’s 36 more ABs (and PAs), so now we have 406 PAs and 382 ABs. Adding the 0 for 99 to make up the ABs (hitless at bats + the makeup at bats, of course this is the super-conservative estimate with no BBs or SACs to pad his PAs) gives him a 154 H / 481 AB. That’s a .320 BA. So he’s definitely close with the 36 number, especially given the extreme conservative params of my estimate.

he may have some issues. The way he showed up the fans was tasteless, but I do think he’s tough. If you get blindsided by a firstbaseman, it’s not a matter of toughness.

Potential hardware

I know there are still alot of ifs, alot of ground to cover, and nothing’s even close to being decided, but if Huddy and JHey continue on a TEAR like they have been… check out the possible finishing line our amazing team could have come October:

NL East Crown
Rookie of the Year (keep going 4-4 and its a huge chance)
Cy Young (after Waino got lit up and Halladay struggles)
Batting title (I think there might be some low level arithmetic threads above…lol)

Just sayin….

I'm guessing in 1991, Boone would have said...

…that if Charlie Leibrandt went down, there’s no way we can win with Glavine, Avery, and Smoltz. Boone just made himself out to be a fool. Has he watched Lowe lately? Am I missing something?

by ryantex on Sep 2, 2010 8:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I am guessing

that you did not hear that Lowe was given a shot in his elbow on Sunday…..and has not felt any better to the point that KK will take his friday start???
Anyway, he is not looking at our strengths
our #1is = if not > to their #1
Oswalt has declined to a number 3rd starter maybe a 2 on a good day
hamel is coming back so I would rank him 3 maybe a 2…..who else do they have" Blanton?…..solid 5
NOW
we have JJ, Big Red, and now Minor….who I rank as 1/2, 2/3, and 3/2…in a head to head 3 game that means we take 2 of three…or in a 4 we either split or take 3

I agree

Why is everyone at ESPN kissing their ass? The Braves get zero respect from the major media. But that’s alright. As long as Atlanta brings home the hardware, I don’t really care.

I enjoy

how the Padres continually cried about not getting any attention or love from the media, and they’ve lost 7 in a row now. They’re getting some attention now…

No, the Pads have been crying

About their lack of national respect. They don’t seem to understand that all most of the national sports media care about in the NL is the Mets and the Phillies, regardless of their records and places in the standings.

Make Venters a starter again to replace Lowe for the rest of the season. He would almost guarantee a victory in every start the way he has pitched. The braves have the best bullpen in baseball so they can afford to let him start. It’s your chance to win it all Bobby so make the call.

by EricGreggWasPaidOff on Sep 2, 2010 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

And one of the main reasons that the Braves “have the best bullpen in baseball,” as oily water so correctly stated, is in a large part due to Venters. Take him out of the ‘pen and you’ve created a hole there. Could it be filled competently? Yes. Could someone be as dominant out of the ’pen as Jonny? Maybe. But why chance it?

man, Wright looked completely fooled when he got his hit, totally off balance but strong enough to get a hit. If it weren’t for that, our Hanson would of had a no-no going. Hanson looked great today.

I am surprised that Hanson hasn’t changed his delivery some, when he takes the ball out of his glove, his arm is real slow and he seems to show what type of pitch he’s about to throw to the hitter. Does anyone think this is why he’s been getting hit more this season? I remember hearing that he may have been tipping pitches, but could his delivery have anything to do with it?

by Sparhawk on Sep 2, 2010 7:04 AM EDT reply actions

Hanson's Mechanics

I don’t think are really that big of an issue. Yes, he has a long arm action out of the glove, but he also has a big body and seems to do a pretty good job of keeping his throwing arm behind his body and hiding the pitch. After all, when he throws his curve for strikes it still ties hitters in knots.

Now, one thing that I saw him do tonight that I would like to see more of is taking some speed off of his fastball. I think the hardest he threw all night was 93 mph. Yet, his control was impeccable and he had some really good moment on his pitches, evidenced by the fact that Mets hitters were popping him up all night long. I would much rather see him pitch in the low 90’s with that kind of control and movement.

I'll share a story from BP yesterday:

Martin Prado broke his bat during BP. He came over to us fans on the field who bought tickets for BP and brought his now broken bat with him and gave it to a little boy standing there with his Dad. He signed the little boy’s baseball, the broken bat and took the time to let his Dad take a photo of him with his son and then waited patiently as the Dad showed someone else how to work his camera so he could get a photo of the 3 of them together. It was nice to witness.

Real Class.

Thanks, NC, for taking the time to share that with us. IMO, Martin seems to be grounded, humble and sincere. Great to hear about someone that has gained so much from baseball, is having a lot of success with plenty of recognition, yet remains “real.”

It was great to see. And, he and others were so nice to the fans there – giving baseballs, signing stuff and taking time for the fans there We were told not to bother the guys while they were at bat, but several came over to us when their time was done voluntarily. I didn’t have a marker with me (never been an autograph hound) but I loved watching the guys interact with the fans who were so excited to speak to the players and get their stuff signed.

Oh, and I wore my “I’ll Be Back” shirt to the game. One of the ushers told me that I should have let Chipper see it because they were sure he would have signed it for me. I decided to wear my “Thanks Bobby” shirt tonight and take my other one with me – perhaps today (Thurs) I might get Chipper to sign it for me. Wish me luck!!!

Yes, good luck!

Loved your “I’ll Be Back” graphic, but had no idea you had a shirt made. Very cool. Maybe Lizziebeth, the talented TC photg, will be there and get a shot of you getting it signed by Chipper. How cool would that be?

As far as the generosity of Martin and the other players, that’s all great, but the part about the kid is what I like. I’m not an autograph seeker, or follow the “cult of celebrity” in sports or entertainment, but when someone like Martin, or anyone, goes out of their way to impress a kid, that’s class.

You did the on-the-field batting practice thing?

Would you recommend it? I’ve thought about splurging on that and wondered if it’s worth the cost. — sounds like it is. I’m glad you’re having such a great time – I’m jealous!

Definitely worth it you’re like us – from out of town and can’t make it to but a couple of games a year. You get to go right down on the field behind the cage and it’s great to observe the players interact with one another and hear/watch the balls coming off their bats.

We bought tickets for both our games and looking forward to tonight!

Last night was my first time seeing Heyward in person. My goodness does the ball come off his bat like a missle.

Freeman looked very comfortable at the plate and it was great to see his debut.

Beyond happy to see Tommy pitching like Tommy again.

Staying on the subject of Heyward

The guy is HUGE! When the Braves played the Dodgers this year in LA I went, and he just towers over everyone else. Looks like Freeman is just as big too.
