Petition to Stop Worrying About Tommy Hanson
I have seen far too many comments about "which Tommy will show up," to avoid this any longer. There is nothing wrong with Tommy Hanson. In fact, he has been one of the top pitchers in all of baseball this season but has been tortured by lack of good luck. I understand not every believes in the newer statistics, but regardless, Hanson's got the sixth lowest FIP in the NL at 3.14. That's ahead of Ubaldo Jimenez, in case you were wondering. Here are Hanson's stats since the start of July:
6 GS, 37 IP, 6.2 IP/S, 2.19 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 37 K, 7 B, 5.23 K/BB, .245 BAA, .318 BABIP, 1 HR
I understand that a few starts at the end of June may have gotten you a bit worried, but please, let's all understand that Hanson has nothing wrong with him and that the Hanson that shows up almost every single start is the Hanson that all of us are accustomed to seeing. Speak up if you agree.

Kenshin doesn’t approve of beating a dead horse.

I completely agree. I too thought something was off this year with Hanson, but a few days ago I pulled him up on Fangraphs and was amazed at his year. He’s shown improvements in strikeout rates, walk rates, and HR allowed rates. He’s just a victim of a lot of softly hit balls landing in spots the defense isn’t.
Also, IIRC, his WAR for the year so far is 2.9. That’s a pretty good return we are getting on a guy making league minimum.
I paniced for about a week.
Then remembered his age and his stuff and felt a little silly.
Dale Murphy should be a hall of famer!
Maybe we’ll need a post like this for Jason soon.

Nope, imma continue to worry about Heyward until he decides to not pull the outside pitch.
If Jason Heyward were to hit a home run off of you, you would have to fight the urge to thank him.

agreed
was a little worried during that rough patch, but since he has pulled through just fine I see no reason to worry.
I'm speaking up...
because I most definitely agree. He’s not going to be okay, he is okay.

He's by far got the most upside out of any of our starters
he’s only going to get better over time
"That's my teammate, man... That's my quarterback"
Tommy will be fine.
Coming up through the minors, he kind of reminded me of a young Randy Johnson. He is tall, has very good stuff(especially his slider), and strikes out a lot of hitters. I’m not saying he will be as good as Johnson, but that he seems like a similar pitcher.
The only time the Mets win is in the offseason.
A young Randy Johnson? That is good. Very very good.

Randy Johnson was arguably one of the best pitchers in the history of baseball. We can only dream of Tommy ever being that good.
The closest comp for Rando in today’s game would probably be David Price.

I never said Hanson would be that good.
I’m just saying that his pitching style and abilities are similar to that of Johnson’s.
The only time the Mets win is in the offseason.
both were lefties
so the comp doesn’t fit there either.

Hey man, I think you are a little off base here. Randy Johnson was born in 1963, and Tommy was born in 1986. Also, Randy Johnson’s hair is considerably longer than Tommy Hanson’s. Tommy’s a great pitcher, and I love him, but I just want to reiterate the points made by get swoll and Andy: Randy Johnson and Tommy Hanson are not biologically identical organisms.
Nice smart ass remark, but the comp to Johnson didn’t make a lot of sense to me.
Johnson’s stuff basically consisted of a high 90’s fastball and a devastating slider thrown from an intimidating 6’10 frame. Once he got his command issues under control early on in his career, he was virtually unhittable. There really is no comp to the guy.
Tommy is 6’6, uses 4 different pitches, doesn’t throw in the high 90’s, doesn’t pound the inside part of the plate like Johnson, and uses a true 12 to 6 curve ball quite frequently. He’s also never had the control issues Johnson had early on and had proven to be considerably more hittable.
If the only qualities we’re going on to compare a guy to Johnson are being tall, having a good slider, and striking a lot of guys out then we’re not exactly talking about an exclusive list of pitchers here.

Good point. Those 3 things you mentioned in that last paragraph was what I was basing the comparison on. But now that you mention it, there are a fair amount of pitchers like that.

Im not worried about him.
I do know what youre talking about though, its annoying.
The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb
My only concern with Hanson is his ability to hold runner
otherwise he has been pretty solid this year for the most part despite the high ERA and the dearth of wins
Maddux was one of the worst I’ve ever seen at holding runners and he did all right for himself.
I’m more worried about a guy making good pitches than holding a baserunner close.

I agree with you, dear sir
And I’m wondering how I might go about subscribing to your newsletter.
In all seriousness – he’s fine. He’s been fine. He had a couple of bad starts, but he’s young, this is his first full season in the majors… ho hum.
Avery is alive ya know

I'm worried about Hanson
Not his pitching, mind you. His beard. It’s unbecoming.

Why hate on the beard?
SInce Smoltz is gone we don’t have his beard. And we don’t have the Fasano ’stache anymore either.

Sleeps all night and he works all day?
I went on a bit of a rant about Lincecum falling away from his ‘08 otherworldliness concerning his walk rate but the statnerds assured me he was in line with his annual numbers. Which was all well and good until I considered how he used to walk one, maybe two a game to achieve those levels – now it’s five/none/six/one/five, etc.
/rocks back and forth thinking it will help
/realizes it only helps others

I was never worried, but everyone probably already knows that.
He’s been even better than last year, except for BABIP.

i am not concerned about hanson
i never was..i’m not gonna lie though..i keep seeing stuff like FIP pop up, and i have no idea what it means…can someone explain that for me?
by forgotten_glory on Aug 6, 2010 12:51 AM EDT reply actions
FIP is a measure of all those things for which a pitcher is specifically responsible. The formula is (HR*13+(BB+HBP-IBB)3-K2)/IP, plus a league-specific factor (usually around 3.2) to round out the number to an equivalent ERA number. FIP helps you understand how well a pitcher pitched, regardless of how well his fielders fielded.

What is both surprising and delightful is that spectators are allowed, and even expected, to join in the vocal part of the game.... There is no reason why the field should not try to put the batsman off his stroke at the critical moment by neatly timed disparagements of his wife's fidelity and his mother's respectability. ~George Bernard Shaw

I agree
What does one get from worrying anyway, other than a stomach ulcer, added stress, sleepless nights, and what they believe is the right to whine?!?
If in fact he does have a problem, which I don’t feel he does, worrying and whining about it is not going to solve it, imo.

who wants hanson in the rotation in october
without him ever having to deal with a rough stretch…I sure as hell dont want him to have to figure it out in a big game… Going through hard times and coming out on top makes you way better…
Look at Hudson and Hanson… Hanson has a couple errors behind him and those guys frequently score… Hudson has errors behind him, doubles down, and keeps them from counting… Hudson is a seasoned pro.. We want Hanson doing that come october
Can I now start a petition
to start worrying about Chipper’s season? And the Braves in general without Chipper?
It may seem reactionary, but this is one of those injuries that happened at the worst possible time it seems. Lets hope Prado can get back and help stabilize the lineup.
