Let's use some basic stats here.
Every since he's been an Atlanta Brave a lot of people have had such a hateful attitude towards Kawakami. Saying he sucks, he shouldn't start on any team, he's not earning his contract etc. This week in Bowman's blog he went out and said Kawakami's contract was a "bad contract" and this is something I just don't understand.
In 2009 KK posted:
WAR 1.7 = 7.8mil
In 2010 KK has posted
WAR 1.0 = 3.8mil
Now before Kawakami had been moved to the pen his ERA was actually a 4.48 which actually is not that bad (about 3 runs in 6 IP)
Last year Kawakami was similar in how he started off really bad then got better as the year went on (outside of a rough July).
Am I saying I think he should be in the rotation? No not really although Derek Lowe is pitching about the same as Kawakami was before he went to the pen. However I think Braves fans are spoiled. Our FO has never been one to really throw out there a starter that's been a true #5 starter. We often have guys in our #5 spot that would be a #3/#4 on most teams and Kawakami could be on quite a few teams with those numbers heck even going by ERA he would be a #3 on some teams.
Anyhow this post was just out of frustration from seeing so many people talk about Kawakami being a bad starter when he actually isn't that bad of a starter. If anything he's average. It's not his fault that the offense leaves him on the hook for a lot of losses. Freddy Garcia has a similar ERA (4.73) and a 10-4 record.
What the team has done to Kawakami by just banishing him is not really fair to him because he actually has been earning his contract. He should be used more than he is in the pen, traded to a team that will use him, or keep him stretched out in AAA.
Thats all =^)
