While watching ESPN, I think BBTN, I noticed that a lot of the teams that hit a lot of home runs are middle of the road, last place type teams. So, with curiosity filling my brain I walked to my computer and preceded to browse the "sortable team stats" section of MLB.com
While looking through the stats I discovered that the Braves rank around 15th in every key statistical catagory except for three. The three they rank in the top 10 on are 2Bs, RBIs and OBP, which they rank 3rd in the league in. Stating the obvious, this means that they dont hit a lot of home runs, but have a lot of gap power and situational hitting, along with the ability to take pitches and get on 1B without making contact.
So, with that being said, I decided to look at our pitching staff, which most would agree is one of the best in baseball.
I found that our ERA is 4th, weve allowed the 3rd fewest hits, 3rd fewest runs, 7th fewest free passes, and the biggest key. Least amount of home runs in all of baseball.
I think here lies proof in the age old saying that a good defense will beat a good offense. We dont go for broke in our ABs, we get OB, drive in the runs and out pitch the other team.
I really do think we take this years team for granted when we hit a few rough games like we had earlier this week. I really do look forward to watching(when theyre on TV, damnit) this team winning this division and making its way through the post-season.
