Braves Blow 9 Run Lead, Lose 12-10

FUCK THAT
I hope the Braves can recover – I really do.

I find Atlanta's lack of win (today) disturbing

I’m glad to be finished with Coors and the Rockies. Can’t wait for the Braves to be back in the friendly confines of Turner Field.
"C'mon Chip!" Bobby Cox
This was freaking ridiculous
why does bobby leave JJ in to allow 7 ER and why does he let Venters pitch 2 innings in a row and 45 pitches?
Bobby Cox lost this game, no one else. I know all of you love Bobby but he IMO has always been a bad in game manager
While I do agree with you
Lets say bobby goes to farnsworth or saito everyone would still blame bobby….i think it’s only fair to call this a straight up team loss though

I'll take that all day

i was hopeing bobby left venters in.....
seemed like a good idea at the time
wrongo
exactly
venters has been your man all year long. look at the innings he has pitched. you cant keep putting him out there for that many pitches. if you dont trust 2 or 3 guys in the bullpen what do have them for, but we have to have those veterans out there even though we are not going to use them in tight games. sometimes this veteran BS is overrated venters is a rookie as i recall. Lets pitch venters untill his arm comes off – why not. got arms in AAA that can do as good as those we dont trust.
please no, it would be too ugly

Braves have 9 run lead…then blow 9 run lead because JJ was kept in too long, Venters was overworked, Farnsworth sucks, and our offense disappeared after the 3rd inning.
There is your summary, really nothing else to it

Strange
Isn’t it strange that this same sort of comeback happens twice in the same day. I was watching MLB tonight and Herold Reynolds said the reds giants game was over but look at it now 12-12?

unlucky?
I didn’t see all the runs score, but the last few were rather unfortunate. In the 8th, we had a chance to get out of it w/ a GIDP but Infante botched the throw so we were only able to retire one. There were also multiple balls that could’ve found fielders, but instead found the holes (particularly Tulo’s ball to score the go ahead run.)
Let’s not get too bent out of shape. We’re still in 1st and we still have a good chance to make the playoffs. We also have some September call ups that should be able to help us, in particular ones that will get the bullpen some rest (Kimbrel, Dunn, Marek.)
We still got this.
and true to form
the Phillies are losing to the Astros. Guess they are really embracing the “match the braves” game that has been going on for what seems like the last 2 weeks
If the "match the braves" thing keeps going
How will the season ever end? We will never finish the 6 games vs the Phillies in Sept and Oct. One team cannot win unless the other loses. Would the Mets get to go to the playoffs?
Heyward is pretty good
I didn't watch past the 4th
but W-T-F?!
This is one of those things that I really hope doesn’t completely haunt the team for a long time. I’ve personally like the way the Braves have come back after hard-luck losses this year so we’ll see.
If I have to explain my username to you, you're obviously a Philly fan.
"Kill my boss?! Do I dare live out the American dream?" - Homer Simpson
this game was so upsetting
Why did the offense just lay down? This game was terrible. I’d rather them lose by 10 than by 2 this way.
Yes, they did score all their runs in the first three innings
and had a few leadoff doubles, but when you score 10 runs your pitching staff has to do well enough to get the win.
If Jason Heyward were to hit a home run off of you, you would have to fight the urge to thank him.

Perspective
I have to remember this a couple times a year:
This was just a game. As painful as it was, there are far more important things in life.
Regarding the season, this loss sucks royally, but we have had a lot more great wins than horrible losses this year. If this team can move past this, we still have a great shot at the playoffs. Let’s forget today happened and take care of business at home.
FALSE!
As painful as it was, there are far more important things in life.

What is the deal with this team? When our offense is good, our pitching stinks. As soon as our pitching is lights out our offense goes cold. Half of our offense will be hot, and the other half cold, and then as soon as the struggling guys pick it up, the raking guys go cold. If we could ever put it all together, this team would be unstoppable. I’m hoping they are just waiting until the playoffs to do this.

unfortunately
thats baseball. It can run hot and cold. I disagree on one point- the pitching has been the strength of the team this year. problem is your getting to the of the season and certain pitchers have thrown a lot this year- venters for sure. ya goota give him some days off to keep him fresh this time of year.
WTF HAPPENED!?
I checked the score at work and it was 10-1, Braves. I get home tonight, and I find THIS!? REALLY!?

That the very day I FINALLY have my cable installed so that I can watch the ballgame…. we lose it like this.

Granted the recap wasn't much of a recap but aren't these recaps published on other prominent sports reporting websites..
We should probably tone it down on the language a bit. Just repeating what Jude said the other day.
I know it sucks.. a lot. But that’s one of the reasons I love sports. Anything can happen.
Is there any good reason that Venters was in for a second inning?
I didn’t get to see the game – was shocked to find out we’d lost the huge lead. Is the consensus that Venters obviously should not have been in for his second inning?
Obviously hindsight is always 20/20
But lets just say no one on the thread really trusted anyone else, so everyone was excited to see JV go back out there for the 8th….but then he started to fade and Bobby kept him in, which he shouldn’t have done. Bobby did not manage this game well, in my opinion that’s really getting overlooked

Yeah...
I’m sure if I had been watching I might have been excited for Venters to comeback out. But I guess he was left in way too long… And then of course Farnsworth….who happens to be worthless.
I think Venters threw 35 pitches….for a guy who is already overworked this season, to put him in that position and make him come out and throw anything over 25 pitches I think is absurd, and really what can we expect from the guy….he’s been a workhorse all season, he is NOT the one who deserves the L in his stat line

Yea but we
just have to have Moylan because he throws that natural sinker from down under. We just have to have it. the problem is that there are more things that can go wrong with that type delivery. If it worked consistently wouldnt everyone be doing it.
THE SINKER is not the only pitch to get guys out with……..but we just have to have it.
Yeah, if he doesn’t figure this out we could be in trouble. We need to have some reliable RH relievers down the stretch, and right now they’re all very inconsistent or just plain suck ass (farnsworth)
"A good friend of mine used to say, This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. Think about that for a while." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
venters
should not have come back for the second inning. there’s what 7-8 guys in the bullpen – gotta spread it around. The Braves are not ha High Octate offense- we are going to be in a lot of close games – cant bring venters in every night. Use those veteran pitchers- thats why we got them – right?
problem solved or problem discovered
our dreadful offense finally scored some runs, but we still managed to find a way to lose that game.
is it me or are the braves finding creative ways to lose games, such as:
- errors
- lack of offense
- bullpen blowing holds/save opportunities
On the bright side
The Phils are currently losing…

Whenever the Braves lose
I hate to say this, but I am much more productive when the Braves lose. When they play I am doing other things and check in often on Yahoo. When they are losing I turn off the computer and concentrate on the work at hand. Later I check to see the results, if they win, I don’t do much in particular, but if they lose I set a new task more quickly and start work more quickly. So today will be a more prodcutive day, oh, here in Japan the games finish around or before noon.
He whose words outnumber his deeds, know that his death is better than his life.
I lay most of this on Jurrjens. He was handed a 9 run lead and gave up 7 runs? Totally unacceptable from any pitcher. Bobby’s pen management was terrible as well and our offense seemed to quit after 4 innings. I have a really bad feeling this one is going to come back and bite us in the a** later this season.
Facepalm.
there are no other words to describe that.
I blame it on the “Venters for ROY” talk. No more of it, I say! No more.
I just felt my heart shatter.

There are 162 games in a baseball season. You’re gonna win some, you’re gonna lose some. That’s life. That’s baseball. Every team has a loss that makes the fans want to cry…Even the Yankees. It happens. Let’s move on. This is a good baseball team. Go Braves

Thank you!!!!
You’d swear this was a team with 90 losses right now or something the way some of these people are reacting.
http://hobnailboot.wordpress.com/
Yep
And the game thread was far, far worse than this! I know this loss was tough to swallow but man the way these fair weather fans were reacting was ridiculous!
I don't think it's fair to call anyone on here "fair weather"
In my opinion most of the people on TC are true Braves fans….and I’m sure you’ve gotten really mad at a family member or loved one in your life and said some things out of frustration, but in the end you still love them, correct? A lot of people were frustrated during the game, and afterward as well….but to call them “fair weather” because they are upset at a loss and venting, is very unfair. And Jay, can you honestly tell me that during and after the game you just shrugged your shoulders and said “oh well, win some you lose some” cause if that’s the case then I have to question your love for this team, because no one should have been able to take that loss lightly at the time.
"A good friend of mine used to say, This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. Think about that for a while." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
Respectfully disagree with this notion
just shrugged your shoulders and said "oh well, win some you lose some" cause if that’s the case then I have to question your love for this team, because no one should have been able to take that loss lightly at the time.
I do not care if my love for the game or Braves is questioned, but this was exactly my reaction to today’s loss. I used to get really mad in the past, I used to be the first one commenting my long and drawn out thoughts about why the game sucked back when it was just gondeee doing the recaps, and I used to let the outcome of a baseball game dictate my moods.
But then my entire April was more or less spent in and out of a hospital, with someone close to me on death’s door, and baseball as we know it was a million bajillion miles away. I love the Braves, I love baseball, but it is not the end all, be all. Baseball is, and always will be, a children’s game, meant to teach sportsmanship and competition, regardless of how big of a profitable empire it can be at its most “professional” level. The nine-game losing streak? Sucks for the Braves, but I had bigger problems. Troy Glaus can’t hit the ball? Sucks for the Braves and everyone who demanded results, but not my top concern. Today’s epic meltdown to the Rockies? Yeah, it sucked watching it, but it was also not the last, season-deciding game we did it in, and at least it took 120+ games for the Braves to have their first epic meltdown instead of 3 like last year.
And in regards to the “fair weathers,” jay probably means the drive-by negative nancies that decide to pollute the threads only when the team is doing bad. That’s not only fair weather, but classless. Not just in baseball, but in life itself, nobody’s quick to compliment, or praise, but don’t get in the way when there’s something to gripe about. What’s the opposite of venting? Gushing? How come there’s never a necessity to have a Cloud 9 thread, but always a request for a Thunderdome thread whenever we lose three in a row? If after a Braves loss, you were so frustrated and angry, that you decided to barge into Jocks & Jills, and just start spouting off how much you hated the Braves, Bobby, and how much they sucked, would you expect to be liked? Probably not. It might be innocuous internets and just text, and we’re behind screens and desks and not barstools and booths, but we’re still the same type of people that don’t really need to read the same unwanted bullshit in text that people don’t have the balls to actually say out in public.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Well said.
Yes, games like this suck to behold. Suck so bad that it can make us lose perspective about the game’s relevance to life in general.
So lets just hope for an Astros sweep tomorrow as our team makes its way back to Turner Field.

Fair enough
I just think you took what I said way out of context.
I did not mean for it to sound like a Braves loss is more important than anything else in life. I was just defending a lot of the TC community who was upset and spouting off on here today to all the sudden be called out as “fair weather” fans, because I was upset and let my feeling be heard, but should I be considered a “fair weather” fan because I got upset at a loss? I get excited when they win too, so should I not do that There are a lot of people, including you roy, that have a passion for this team, and some people are going to react different than others, but to be called out because we didn’t all just take this loss the same way is very unfair.
Also, You say that we have a fanpost for the loss today, and we usually don’t for the wins, but that is America for you, we dwell a lot more on a negative than we rejoice a positive, it’s sad but true.
For the record, I agree with you on the people that only come on here to be negative about the team, I agree that is very classless, and it’s unfortunate that they use this as their medium to voice their negative opinion, but aren’t here with us through the positives.

Honestly
The way we’ve played the past 3 games it is dumb luck the Phillies have not over taken us. We deserved to get swept. And I hope it wakes some people up. In particular Bobby Cox cause if he manages that way in the playoffs (IF WE MAKE IT) we will not win one for him… we will prove why we only one won.
Dumb luck???
Obviously they haven’t overtaken us, so I don’t think there is any “dumb luck” behind it, they’re just losing games too, it’s baseball…..

Is partly why he’s been a little off lately
Farnsworth has been complete garbage since we got him though, I don’t know why we ever got him

because we
have to have those experienced veterans. Venters is a rookie – right?
Farnsworth
Has had a couple of good games for us this year. But on balance you’re right – we definitely have better pitchers to trot out there in relief.
What is both surprising and delightful is that spectators are allowed, and even expected, to join in the vocal part of the game.... There is no reason why the field should not try to put the batsman off his stroke at the critical moment by neatly timed disparagements of his wife's fidelity and his mother's respectability. ~George Bernard Shaw

why phillies are keeping Domonic Brown in the ML
if he hasn´t played everyday. I think they are wasting D. Brown talent. i´d send him to minors and keeping him playing and improving everyday.
He can forgot how to bat and lose a lot of confidence.
With Howard they held him in the minors way too long. I guess they don’t want to do that again.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
someone can write a book with this
just imagine if tomorrow game would be suspended due to rain
or if the Phillies refuse to play, because the braves aren’t playing, they don’t know whether to win or lose
or they play 20+ innings and still tied
so MLB suspended it to play in another day
did you read
the AJC article? Braves and Phillies are in lockstep. Even more prescient after today.
F***!
……………..Ok, I’m putting this game behind me. We’re no worse than we were yesterday, or the day before. Time to look to the future. I’m glad that this team doesn’t have to play tomorrow. In my experience, losses like these hurt and affect future performance until you can take a break from the game, which I believe is what this team needs.
I hate the Phillies so much...
you say that, but the braves lost a very similar game last year to the phillies, and then swept the nats, maybe it doesn’t hurt a teams future as much as some would think
True
But if I had to bet I would think that some of the players are just as frustrated as we are (probably more). Heck I’m super happy to have a stress free day off from the Braves just to lower my blood pressure!
We got beat in 3 games on the ROAD by the ROCKIES, but the Phillies got beat in 3 games at HOME by the ASTROS!!!!

New people at new positions means they need to get their timing right. Too many errors lately that have lost games.
If we can tighten defense we will be VERY tough to beat.

Well, I’ve seen all but five games this year, and this loss ranks as the worst. But not by much. That 9 straight loss stretch was really, really bad. I know we didn’t blow a monster lead back then, but those games were awful.
On a better note, bought my tix for the last homestand. Will fly to Atl to say bye to Bobby and support the team.
Bottom Line
IF we make the playoffs, we won’t last long. It’ll be nice to get back if we somehow do so, but the way this team has played on the road all year will make it nearly impossible to go deep into the postseason. Anything can happen in the 5 game series. Beyond that, not much hope.
With this logic
We’d be guaranteed World Series champs with home field advantage.
"Look out Atlanta. Jason Heyward is going to wow you."

I wouldn't say I completely disagree
But one thing all of us fans need to keep in mind is the 2006 Cardinals. They won 83 games and WON THE WORLD SERIES. The thing we need to keep in mind is that anything can happen when (God willing) we make the playoffs and realize that the best team doesn’t always win the world series. Keep the faith Braves fans, I know I am!!

So.
I am now on the team that says we made trades and still didnt help our team. Fanrsworth has been horrendous.
I vote for us to acquire Brian Fuentes who was just put on waivers NOW!
Add Bobby Abreu to that if they will eat some money.
Another lefty
No thanks….we have enough good lefty relievers (Venters, EOF, Wagner, and Dunn if needed)
"A good friend of mine used to say, This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. Think about that for a while." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
Even if he’s a lefty if he can get righties out I take it. Anyone that Bobby trusts that’s not FarnsworthLESS is a bid step up.
THIS
Everyone keeps saying that crap about he’s a lefty but it doesnt what arm he throws with if he’s getting batters out.
Right now Bobby has absolutely no confidence in anyone but Venters and Wagner and its showing. If we got someone like Fuentes that would allow more rest to Venters and we wouldn’t have to worry about to many lefties in a few days because of rosters expanding. Then going into the post season we would have a good gauge on who should be in our pen.
Bottom line is we need someone before Venters’ arm falls off

Alrighty
Yes, the loss sucked. But the Phillies lost, so I’m good. ESPN’s bottom line was gushing about how Roy Halladay is the first Phillies pitcher to win six consecutive in like forever, and I knew right away that the endless match-step dance would continue for another night.
As for the game, I’m having a hard time placing a whole lot of blame here. I see a lot of people pinning it on 100% Bobby, and yeah, he might deserve the vast majority of it, but he isn’t the only one without fault. But at the same time, jumping to such an early lead also turns into kind of an anomalous situation for the Braves; as odd as it sounds, when a team is up by so much, nobody clearly knew how to play, and let the Rockies pick up steam, and bowl them over after they realized that they should actually start playing again.
Jair Jurrjens – anyone else see the look in his eyes that kind of said “I’m getting my first career CG today”? He attacked the crap out of the strike zone afterwards, which yeah, is what a pitcher staked to a nine-run lead should do, but it’s like he didn’t stop serving up strikes, even when he started to get solid contact on him. Subsequently, can Heap be held for calling for all these strikes?
Defense – simply put, it got lazy, complacent, which is easy to see happening when “you’ve got it in the bag.” But can’t give them all the blame when Jurrjens is serving up gopherballs.
Bobby Cox – I thought the rule of thumb was 4-5 run lead, let the guy for a CG, 8+ and let the starter go official, and then bring in the relievers that need some work for some clean starts and hopeful finishes; not milking Jurrjens to serve up the bases, and let the Rockies gain some mythical momentum, for
Peter Moylan – like many here, I like Peter Moylan the guy, but in all honesty, I have not seen this man in the same confidence inspiring manner since 2007, when he was the 2007 Jonny Venters. Now, I’m holding my breath every time I see him come out of the pen, and today’s out-less outing, I’m only hoping that he’s gotten all the suck out of his system until the next time he melts down. I just pray that this fate never happens to Jonny Venters next season.
Kyle Farnsworth – going on record here, I have never been a fan of Kyle Farnsworth. To me, he has always been volatile, big arm, no consistency, and exactly what I don’t want to see out of my bullpen. He took my breath away in 2005 before breaking my heart, and then I was glad to see him leave. I cringed when we got him back, regardless of all numbers, and as far as I’m concerned, when I say the junk relievers who should have started been pitching after the 5th, Farnsworth is first in line.
Yes, Bobby’s bullpen management is pretty atrocious, but again, after being in cruise control, and then hitting a skid, the brain has to first snap out of it before making the right choices. And seldom have the Braves really been in such a cruising manner this season.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m quite upset over the loss too, and I almost (read: almost) want to say that this team deserves some boos from the hometown crowd when they take the field on Friday for this shit performance, but it’s certainly not the end of the world, especially with the Phillies ironic loss to the Astros, and the lead being intact, instead of shaved down to 1.5.
But let’s all not act like this hasn’t happened to us before. And it happens to the best of teams too. We pulled pretty much the same act on the Reds, and they’re still doing pretty good right now, if you haven’t noticed.
Cheer up, everyone. The ride’s not over yet.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

this reflects many of my own feelings. As far as the toll of the loss overall, I think it is prudent that we remember two things; we have been no hit before this season. There is less shame in losing an offensive power game in Colorado (no matter who lead by what) then there is in not being able to get one measley hit in 9 innings. Second, the Reds have given up two huge comebacks this year (once to us and once to the Phils I believe) and yet they are still in first. To add to those two, this team has seen a 9 game losing streak and a 9 game winning streak. We have seen a guy absolutely kill the ball and become a player of the month to being one of the worst hitters in the league. We have seen a “nobody” who was scoffed at by the league for making the all star game somehow be in position to actually be talked about for the batting title.
All in all, I love this team. My blood pressure may not, but I do. This team doesn’t feel like a powerhouse going through the motions, they feel like they have heart and truly care for the team and each other. I expect big things.

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." A. Bartlett Giamatti
The Phillies loss
Especially the brain dead way it happened (imagine if we had the tying run picked off in the 8th at third base the way they did) salves almost all of this game. Yes, it sucked, yes it was painful. If you watch the game long enough, especially as it’s played in that circus tent they call a ballpark, you’ll see games like it. And worse.
It’s still just one loss. We have a chance to start play friday up 3. At worst, it’ll be 2.
Take a deep breath, watch a movie, go outside tomorrow and look at the leaves on the trees. We’ll get back to it friday.

you would have to watch a lot of baseball to see a team blow a 9 run lead.
Man, that’s like a one in every 10,000 games occurrence. The NL record for blown leads is 11 runs, last performed in 1994.
I’m cool with the “these things happen” attitude after a gut-punch loss, but this one has to be put into perspective. That sickening display today was as historic as a perfect game.
Here's a little nugget, just for you

I watched that game on TBS. I started thinking about it in the 5th inning of Wednesday’s game.
The Braves won the NL Pennant 5 months later.

Ridiculous things happen in that dump.

Saw this on MLB tonight about the Braves blowing that game in ’92. Made me feel better til i realized it was May and the Braves were a .500 team at the time.

Still
It was Big John out there, with a huge lead and (I distincly remember this) overwhelming stuff in the first three innings. It was a terribly disheartening collapse at the time.

My demeanor changed +1000 when I saw the ’Stros win last night. Just think how their fans feel – Braves get swept the last week of August and the Phillies make up zero ground at home unless they can win today. This loss sucked royally, but the Braves are STILL, even after being swept, in the drivers seat.
I'm glad I didn't...
I had a chance to make a trip to go to part of this series. I’m glad I didn’t!
Yeah, this game sucked. Being swept was awful. But you know what?
After reading royhobbs comments above reminding us to put a baseball game into perspective… it made me reflect that as bad as losing this set of games has been…..it’s nothing compared to waking up and deciding if you’re going to wear a ballcap or bandanna today because of your chemo induced baldness and you’re still in your 30s. Believe me, that sucked.
Thanks royhobbs for your gentle way of keeping us reminded it’s just a game.
We’re fortunate the Phils didn’t gain ground, now let’s do our business from this point on.
We’ll lose some and hopefully win most. We as fans will enjoy it because…November will be here before we know it and April will be a long wait.

Blah
everyone is excited we didnt lose any ground, but I see it as a HUGE chance to gain ground. Dont get me wrong, im happy the Phillies are losing too, but im not gonna sit here and fake excitement over a sweep.
The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb
The Rockies are not a bad ballclub. That said, blowing a 9 run lead is disgraceful against anyone. Thankfully the Astros took care of business for us.
Forget the Rockies ever existed, as there won’t be playoff baseball for them. Focus on the Fishi-poos.

In fairness
Forget the Rockies ever existed, as there won’t be playoff baseball for them.
In 2007, yes, it was miracles of miracles…however, as of September 1st of that year, the Rockies were more games behind than they are now, and behind more teams than they are now.
As bad as the Rox are on the road, their schedule is very home heavy from here on out.
By no means is it probable at this point, but assuming there will not be playoff baseball in Denver is a fairly dangerous assumption at this point.
not as punny as SDcat00
Agreed...
They’re only four out with 36 games to go. Still enough time for them to get back in it. 20 games at home.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
