Braves Offense Fails Again, Lose 5-2
The Braves offense was non-existant on Tuesday night and will have to fight to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon.
Derek Lowe was on the mound for the Braves and was consistently flirting with danger, but managed to pitch six innings. He gave up three runs (two earned), on seven hits and two walks. Despite the decent numbers, it seemed like the Rockies had men in scoring position all night. Jorge De La Rosa started for the Rockies and dominated our lineup. We swung at pretty much whatever he threw, including countless sliders in the dirt. I'm looking forward to the day when we can actually hit left-handed pitching for once.
The offense was pretty awful, and they hit into four double plays on the night. Alex Gonzalez hit his 5th HR of the season with Atlanta on a line drive shot into left field. Gonzo also drove in Matt Diaz in the 7th with an RBI single for the Braves 2nd run of the night. To be honest, Sea Bass was the only hitter who showed up at the plate tonight.
Carlos Gonzalez and Seth Smith both hit deep home runs and neither has landed yet. Dexter Fowler essentially clinched the ballgame in the 8th inning with a clutch 2-out, 2-run single into center field off of Takashi Saito.
Houston Street came in to close the ballgame for the Rockies, and the umpire suddenly widened his strikezone by a foot for the 2nd night in a row. That's always fun. Heyward flew out to left, Prado struck out and Derrek Lee grounded out to end the game.
Rox win 5-2.
The Astros had the game won in Philly, but choked in the 9th with two outs. They're still playing in the 14th.
It'll be Jair Jurrjens against Esmil Rogers tomorrow afternoon. 3:10 start time. If we can't win a game against Jason Hammel, Jorge De La Rosa or Esmil Rogers, well, I'm not really sure what to think.

I hope that this marks the end of “sweep” predictions in the “Series Previews” for the rest of the season.

holy crap
ryan howard got ejected…. no one left on the bench, so phils need to use a pitcher to play first base!
I’d be a little upset too if I went 0-7 with 5 K’s.

Ryan Howard is going nuts on an Umpire. His ass is getting a suspension.

They’re above average, but we’re the 2nd best team in the NL.

Phils fans have to be more disappointed than we are tonight
I can’t believe the Astros helped us out by beating the Phils… but to take it into all those extra innings – pure Joy!

yea.. can we not predict what series are going to be..
Everyone thought we had the advantage over the rockies for this series and look where we are.
I did not think we had an advantage on Rox. Freaking Coors Field is a weird place to play baseball. If your bats don’t show up, it’s going to be a long series. Hudson was our or only real hope to win the series. JJ is our only chance to save face. Lowe was a toss up (cause you know he stinks at the wrong time).

Whos the dumbass now? I told u Lowe is shit and shouldn’t be in the rotation when the playoffs come around
And he might not be in a three man rotation (he shouldn’t be), but he is proven to be valuable out of the pen in the playoffs. Lowe is not shit – your opinion might be, but take a look at his #s. He’s not shit, just overpaid.

I liked it the first way you had it, actually ;)
"I should have been like, 'Thank you, new guy. Don’t try the veal!'" - Chief Noc-A-Homa (Hohn's offspring)
I think we should be rid of him after this year… Though I doubt another team would take his contract back without us taking another bad contract in return
The guys never missed a start – his ERA is slightly above 4. He IS overpaid, but he’s also a useful bridge to the Braves’ future. They are better off keeping him if the best thing they can get is a bad contract in return. If they can get something useful for him, then by all means, go for it. No sense in purging one bad thing for another when by all purposes other than money he is a pretty valuable guy.

Wow! Phillies Lost!
That is karma right there. Burning all your players to force the pitcher to play LF and to bat with the game on the line. Thank you Baseball Gods.

Braves against lefties
= FAIL
Only the Pirates are worse.
I don’t get it. I just don’t. We have a good hitting team, but goodness, their games against lefties are sad.
At least the mighty Astros are taking care of the Phils. Looks like the Rockies and Astros are beginning their typical late season charges.

This loss sucks.
This Phillies loss makes it suck less.
Let’s PLEASE get out of Colorado with a win and a 3.5 game lead!
Go Astros! Beat up Roy Halladay!
The birth of Jason Heyward was God’s punishment for the sins of the people in New York and Philly.
i wouldn't count on it...
but i am hoping that this can somehow happen!

The sweet nectar of 7 extra innings, only to still lose
Is the thing that keeps me on an even keel tonight.
I bet if you shot him with sodium pentathol, Rollins would admit to regretting that homer in the 9th. Their ’pen got reamed, the cleanup guy is (possibly) cruising for a suspension and they lost a day off the calandar.
"We haven't had any irony here since about, uh, '83, when I was the only practitioner of it. And I stopped because I was tired of being stared at."
Magic # = 35
The Braves have absolutely got to win tomorrow. You can’t expect the Astros to beat Roy Halladay. A 3-3 road trip ain’t bad.
I’m looking forward to 7 games at home against the Cantu/Coghlan/Paulino/Ross-less Marlins and the derelict Mets while the Phillies are out west taking on the scorching hot Padres, the white-flag Dodgers, and the one-game makeup against the Rockies.
I think it’s about time to start invoking the magic number. The Phillies’ loss drops it to 35.
by AnEternalEnigma on Aug 25, 2010 5:42 AM EDT reply actions
No it’s not time to start talking magic numbers.

Agreed- don’t jinx us all with that babble. Case in point, my co worker sitting right next to me came in spouting the Reds magic # Monday. They’ve given up 27 runs in two games. LEt it rip when it’s less than 10.

Thanksfully the ’Stros have helped out the Braves. These are HUGE lost opportunities for the Phillies. 14/20 for the Braves at home, 13/19 road for the Phillies starting Friday and the Braves are guarenteed a 1 game lead starting it off.
I looked at the Schedule
You have to see this road trip as further signs the baseball gods are similing upon us. The Braves hit the road and play two good, but not great teams including a place we always seem to struggle (Colorado) against a team that is pretty dynamite at home (the Rockies). The Phillies, meanwhile, get two of the worst clubs in the NL at home and can’t make hay against either one of them. Fortune shines upon us.
After the series concludes with the Rockies, Atlanta has 35 someodd games left. 20 of them are at Turner Field (including the all important last series against the Phillies). All but seven will be against the NL East (we have a set against the Cards and Pirates).
The Braves are in the middle of a dog fight, but you can’t ask for much more heading into September. Atlanta controls it’s destiny. They don’t have to rely on a massive hot streak or other teams falling apart. They just have to keep doing what they’ve been doing and win series. We will see the division over and over the next few weeks. Gotta keep the pressure on.
Yep – I love this chance for the Braves to “make some hay” over the next 20 days starting Friday.
by CharlotteChop on Aug 25, 2010 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions
Look at it the other way around. Rockies are 40-20 at home now. Phils are 42-24. This is the toughest road series left for the Braves minues the one at Philly. The Phillies have left a huge chance on the table while the Braves play against the second toughest home record in the league next to themselves and now the Braves get 14 of 20 at home, while the Phillies take their under .500 record on the road (and out West for seven) for 13 of their next 19. Yes, it’s frustrating that the Braves haven’t picked up at least one game, but look at it from the other side – a HUGE lost opp and therefore gain for the Braves.

Valid point.
I would just like the Braves to benefit more and take advantage of situations where they could get some breathing room.
Carpe Diem!
