Reading some comments on the Phillies game thread
regarding Jayson Werth’s second strikeout of the game:
What in the world is with some of these AB’s?
by philsandthrills on Aug 23, 2010 7:00 PM CDT
Werth is leery of Astros scouts. He does not wish to join the other Phils castoffs.
by Bilzo on Aug 23, 2010 7:01 PM CDT
Phillies currently lead 2-1 in the 5th inning.
The birth of Jason Heyward was God’s punishment for the sins of the people in New York and Philly.
That 3B they have right now
Chris Johnson, he’s playing some good ball. If Bourn can get on base and Pence and Lee hit like their suppose to, it can be a decent lineup. They can and should get to Blanton
Thanks for the info. Hopefully that score will flip soon

Which of three viewing options should I go with:

(b) Go home, make food, watch via PS3 HDTV if available, on very crappy computer otherwise

What are the odds that Joe Torre returns to Atlanta next year as manager?
I really doubt the Braves will pay the high salary that he’ll be looking for, but he does have Braves’ ties.
they should snag Sandburg IMO

Maybe
Although the Braves next year will be contending again for a deep playoff run – i don’t know if they necessarily want a young manager put in that role.
maybe not a young manager per se
but not one as old as torre- he’s older than bobby.
plus, torre has been thinking about retiring himself.
True
Its just an interesting thought/discussion. I really doubt it’ll happen, but I guess it could.
As for Torre retiring – I highly doubt that. The guy will manage forever. So many managers will be gone next year, he’ll have the pick of the litter.
not like
he has done a great job with the Dodgers either

He's done okay
This year has been derailed for them primarily because of how good the Padres have been but also because of the owner’s divorce.

doubt they
give him up for free in division
by UltimaParadox on Aug 23, 2010 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Do you really
Have any control over the team that claims him when you put him on waivers?
I think whoever claims him (and is eligible) can get the player. If you don’t want him to go that team, you have to take him off waivers – but then you’re not allowed to trade him.
exactly
If we made a claim on him, there is a period in which a deal can be reached…
Otherwise 2 things happen
Marlins give him up for free making the claiming team absorb all contractual agreements
Marlins pull him back and he can not be traded
I bet the Marlins would pull him back if we claimed him
by UltimaParadox on Aug 23, 2010 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions
I doubt it
Marlins aren’t in contention anymore this year, and its not like Ross would be back with the Braves next year more than likely.
it is usually rule of thumb
to not give players up in division…
Either way its a moot point, another team would have made a claim before we did… and the Giants did

It still adjusts for wind and distance of other MLB park walls
Very few MLB parks are 415feet minimum at dead center. That eats up half of the added distance from altitude. Where it really carries is right center

But I’m always amused when I look at Vinny’s numbers, see that he’s a 30/100 guy every year in Colorado, leaves at age 32, squanders in mediocrity, and then comes back “old” at age 36, and put up another 30/100 year as if nothing happened.

Yup
Fox law – all games that start between 1:10-7:00 on Saturday’s are blacked out on MLB TV/Extra Innings.
The only game you can find on your TV is whatever game is on Fox at 4:10. Since I live in Virginia, the Braves rarely happen to be in my “market area.”
for the blackout
just go to the gamecenter and login for game audio, then once thats up click the mlbtv link and it bypasses the blackout, found that out earlier in the season
I will have to try this.
This Saturday I downloaded like 5 programs before I could find a working (but shitty) stream.
The sole reason I bought tickets for week day games for my trip. Fox games are always changing start times. No concern for the fans who may be coming from out of town. We went to the Ted once and it was a 7 pm start – they changed it to 4pm. Luckily, we flew in early that day and found out in time to head to the game quickly.
As we were coming back to the hotel, some other fans were heading to the park for the game only to realize they had missed it.

Anybody here regret not bringing back Soriano?
The guy has been absolutely amazing in Tampa Bay. Wags has been awesome (for the most part), but it makes me wonder if our season would really be any different (better or worse) if we had just kept Soriano.

Probably shouldn’t be pitching to Helton with a base open.
by Ivan the Great on Aug 23, 2010 10:28 PM EDT reply actions
Because with nobody out and 2 competent hitters coming up there’s a good chance Tulo will score anyways. No reason to put another runner on base.
I mean really…especially with the leagues leading GB pitcher on the mound and a guy who is hitting .700 against him at the plate…good idea don’t walk him.

Not only is that small sample size (tiny, really)
But 9 of those plate appearances were prior to 2007. They’re just not at all relevant, here.
Don’t bring that in here while I’m making a point. lol.
But seriously, the guy has already ripped you twice, I don’t throw it near the plate with a base open and already down.

Do you actually think he had a 70% chance to get a single there? With 1 out maybe, with 2 outs sure, but not with nobody out.
Here’s a good article explaining why IBB’s are overrated. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/dont-intentionally-walk-teixeira/
helton has a higher chance than smith or steward of bringing tulo in. also, IBBing helton sets up a potential double play, along with a force at 1st, second, and third
I disagree
Smith and Stewart are batting .259 and .267, they have at least a 40% chance there to get a hit between them. Obviously Helton’s not gonna hit .700 off Hudson, realistically .400 would be killing it which puts him at an even chance of scoring the runner as the next 2. If you walk him though, you’re in the same situation with 1 more runner on base.
Hmm, after the Helton single…three straight outs.

But the panic...
Always results in a comeback…
So I say we stick to our guns

Alright fellow nerds
My netbook’s battery is waning, so I’m going to bolt. Late-inning runs are not an impossibility still. Good night everyone
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
have a good night!

Well
All things considered, Rockies only got one run out of that. Not too bad when you give up two doubles in a row with 0 outs.
Ankiel better get on base here.

It just reaches a level of unintended comedy with how many times they’ve been on the wrong side of a no-no/perfecto the last few years.

Heyward sucks
Here comes your double-play, and it’s going to be so epic that the Braves will forfeit afterward. Thanks a lot Heyward. Go back to Gwinnett!
More like go back to Myrtle Beach
He sucks so bad he should be demoted back to rookie ball.

Earlier ball that was a double was hit off the bag. Had nothing to do with him
