Around SBN: Dallas Cowboys Roster: Who'll Be This Year's Surprise Cut?

Who do you want up when rosters expand?

The title is pretty self-explanatory. When rosters expand in a week and a half, what players do you hope to see (back) in Atlanta?

Here are some players that are currently on the 40-man roster:

Michael Dunn, Kenshin Kawakami, Craig Kimbrel, Jose Ortegano, Brandon Hicks, Troy Glaus, Nate McLouth, Jordan Schafer, Stephen Marek, James Parr

And here are some players not on the 40-man who could be called up:

Scott Proctor, Wes Timmons, Clint Sammons, J.C. Boscan, Freddie Freeman, Todd Redmond, Brandon Beachy, Vladimir Nunez, Barbaro Canizares, Joe Thurston, Brent Clevlen, Wilkin Ramirez, Matt Young, Willie Cabrera

Some are a given, and some have no shot, but I included all nonetheless.

I might have skipped some players or included some that some people will not/should not be called up. I just made the list off the top of my head, so pardon omissions or unnecessary inclusions.

Let us know what you think! Who do YOU want to see?

Diory Hernadez is already with the club, so in addition to him...

It’ll be Hicks, Kimbrel, Glaus and KK without a doubt,

and I’m guessing Nate McLouth, Scott Proctor and Stephen Marek could get called up too. I’m not exactly sure though….Nate would be like outfielder number 6 on the team and Marek might get into a game or two. Proctor still hasn’t been very good, and we still have him for next season. They might just let those guys rest up.

I’d love to see KK actually getting to pitch in some important games. There’s every reason to think he could contribute and come through with some big performances, as he has in the past. The added benefit is this is that it would showcase him for an off-season trade.

by fandave on Aug 21, 2010 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunn comes back giving another lefty...

Kimbrel to add another power arm and if he’s got his control working down the stretch he can be a great weapon. KK obviously, although who knows if he starts, or just wastes away like last time. I’d think Marek over Proctor due to the years they’ve had and Marek being on the 40 man while Proctor isn’t. He may or may not be added since Gwinnett probably won’t be playing but he’d be way down the list in Atlanta and not get much, if any, work. Maybe Ortegano to add a long relief caliber lefty. Those 3-5 arms should be more than enough to reinforce the current staff.

Glaus obviously comes back, as a power bat and possible 3B help. McLouth too in just that he’s paid too much not to be up, and in the least he can pinch run. Hicks probably just for defensive help (again, assuming neither Gwinnett or Mississippi are playing in their respective post seasons). With only 39 currently, and one spot available, I’d assume either Boscan or Sammons are added before too long to give a 3rd C to rest Ross/McCann or in case one gets injured before the playoffs. Outside of them, we’d have to slide Chipper to the 60 day DL if we wanted to bring someone else up too, but then McLouth would crowd the OF and probably not get much time, Glaus adds to the IF corners, and Hicks the IF middle, with a 3rd C assumed added. Not much left to add considering what we already got.

So—Glaus, McLouth, Hicks, Boscan or Sammons, Kenny K, Kimbrel, Dunn, possibly Marek and an outside shot at Ortegano or Hyde (or could they want to add Beachy since he’s been so hot?).

i’m freakin sayin that it’s wes timmons turn to come up this time and that sammons will always be the third freakin’ catcher that we call up. Maybe you didn’t read that right. I just didn’t use a comma between sammons and it’s. maybe i should so you don’t think i’m sayin timmons is a catcher. It’s Wes Timmons turn this time to be called up because he’s been in the minors too long and never called up in September, and it’s always Sammons who is the third catcher called up in September.

Because a 3rd C has more value than a utility IF with ....

good on base skills, good defense, but not a whole lot else that stands out (not saying Timmons isn’t good, just that there is very little that jumps out with his numbers). Timmons wouldn’t be bad, but he’d be way down the line on the bench. Sammons on the other hand provides a defensive utility that gives Bobby more freedom in using Ross or McCann as a pinch hitter.

While Timmons has earned his chance to prove himself, he wouldn’t get much of a chance in September, and a 3rd C (be it Sammons or Boscan or Sucre or another) would be a much more valuable addition.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 23, 2010 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I had a dream last night that Timmons got called up. That’s all I remember, though.

What I think we actually will do.

KK, McLouth, and Glaus being added are no doubters as they’re already under ML contracts.

Dunn would make a lot of sense. Hicks might be back to be the pinch runner.

We’ll add one of the catchers, which, in turn, will allow us to use Ross as a RH pinch hitter off the bench.

I’d like to add Young and/or Timmons, but don’t think the team will add either.

Keep in mind, when you add someone to the ML roster in September you have to start paying them the league minimum, so don’t expect us to add anything more than a few pieces.

I’d like to see him up (and I think he’ll have to be added to the 40 man by December or we’ll risk losing him to the Rule 5 Draft) but I just don’t think the club will make the move yet.

Nate will be up for sure, and he’ll be able to take pinch running/backup OF duties, and Hicks is already on the 40 Man, can pinch run, and play SS.

For some reason

I dont think Kimbrel will come up. Just a hunch.

I think we will see Dunn, Kawakami, Glaus, Hicks, Sammons, Barbaro (RH Bat off bench), and hopefully Matt Young.

I’d love to see Matt Young and Wes Timmons but I doubt we see either. I really don’t want to see Hicks again at least this year as he seems totally useless especially at the plate and we have other guys who can backup SS (Diory, Infante), the only position he can play. I also wouldnt mind seeing Barbaro get a chance as RH pinch hitter but I doubt he’d get many opportunities as Glaus will probably be taking on that role.

if it werent for lowe’s ace/ veteran prescence i would like KK better. and if medlen were not injured, i would but DLowe in the pen, because i think Medlen with our rotation now minus lowe, would be our best rotation. Either way I like the skill specific backups such as Canizares non-prospect hitting, Matt Young’s speed and average, Diory’s good year, Hick’s D, Timmons mediocre hitting, Boscan giving rest, and then one of our million young bullpen arms to throw out there. Nice to be top 5 in farm system depth when expansion comes around. I think freeman coming up now for some pinch hitting would be dumb with lee and glaus.

We don’t have that much room on the 40 man roster. A 3rd catcher will take the 40th spot, we can put Chipper and Medlen on the 60 day DL opening 2 spots. But Freeman, Timmons, Young, Canizares, Beachy, Diamond, and Gomez are 5 too many, plus Resop was traded.

Let’s look at this historically. In 2009 they added 7 players, activating Nate McLouth and Tim Hudson from the DL and recalling Brooks Conrad, Clint Sammons, Jordan Schafer, Vladimir Nunez, and Manny Acosta. They called up Luis Valdez but sent him down a few days later to replace him with Acosta. In 2008 they added 9 players, activating Matt Diaz and Ruben Gotay from the DL, Casey Kotcman from the restricted list, and recalling Brent Lillibridge, Jeff Ridgway, Charlie Morton, James Parr, Jorge Julio, and Corky Miller. In 2007 they added 10, activating Edgar Renteria and Octavio Dotel from the DL, and recalling Julio Franco, Brayan Pena, Royce Rine, Martin Prado, Clint Sammons, Brandon Jones, Jeff Bennett, and Joey Devine. I’m not sure if we can gather anything from all that, except to say they certainly won’t come close to calling up all 40 guys. It’s also worth noting that not all of these moves were made September 1st. The Minor League season ends on September 6th, so some guys won’t be recalled until after then.

Logically, we know that Troy Glaus will come off the DL, and that Kenshin Kawakami and Nate McLouth will be recalled. We can also assume that since Mike Dunn, Craig Kimbrel, and Brandon Hicks have all been in the Majors at various times this year, and have all been helpful in their own ways, so they’ll probably all be recalled.

We know the team needs an extra catcher, and while Clint Sammons seems like a logical choice since he’s been up before, he’s having the worst season of his career and was taken off the 40 man roster earlier in the year. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say they purchase Jesus Sucre’s contract. He’s a great defensive catcher and he’s hit very well since moving up to Mississippi, a .293 average and .726 OPS in 140 at bats. He’s not a great hitter, but neither is Sammons or any of their other options, and he’s a guy who would need to be protected on the 40 man in the offseason anyway (there’s a chance that wouldn’t matter, but still).

So with the first 6 who appear to be locks, and whoever ends up being the 3rd catcher, that’s 7. I’m not sure the team will take any more than that. Personally, I think Steve Marek should get called up, since he’s had a fantastic season and is already on the 40 man, and I think Freeman should get rewarded for his season, but that doesn’t seem likely to happen. So don’t be surprised if it’s only 7 guys and nobody who hasn’t been up already.

My Attempt

Pitchers:

Kawakami
Dunn
Kimbrel
Marek

Hitters:

Boscan (Sammons is having a historically bad offensive season and their defense abilities are simiilar)
Canizares
Hicks (if he’s not hurt for the rest of the year)
Glaus
McLouth

Other Possiblities

Proctor (don’t see it b/c not on 40 man, not having good year at all)
Sammons (in case it’s not Boscan)
Timmons (if the Good Lord hears my prayers and wishes)
Young (if they realize a great pinch runner would be an asset in September)
Freeman (very unlikely IMO with Lee, Glaus, Hinske, and possibly Canizares able to play 1B or pinch hit)

If he gets call in front of Beachy, that would be a joke. I know everyone is throwing out their wish lists, but does anyone have insight on if the club has options with any of these guys? I know a couple of these guys still have their rule 5 year ahead of them, therefore the club doesn’t have to bring them up at all and waste an option down the road.
