Atlanta Braves Acquire Derrek Lee From Chicago Cubs

We first heard about it this morning just before ten o'clock, and we've been talking about it all day, and now ... it's finally here. The Atlanta Braves have acquired first baseman Derrek Lee from the Chicago Cubs. Lee did not play in this afternoon's Cubs game after receiving treatment for his ailing back. Talking Chop was the first Braves site to post the news of a possible trade this morning, with a follow up post earlier this afternoon. Extensive analysis of Lee replacing Troy Glaus at both of those links.

The Braves will apparently place Glaus on the disabled list and give him time to rest his legs for a week or so. Then he will report to triple-A Gwinnett and get some playing time at third base before returning to Atlanta when rosters expand in September. The third base move may be a bit of a watch and see approach by the Braves, and an opportunity to add more flexibility on the team, but with the way Troy was moving at first base, there's little chance he could be anywhere near average at third.

In return for Lee the Braves will send three pitching prospects to the Cubs, minor league right-handed pitchers Robinson Lopez and Tyrelle Harris, and left-hander Jeffrey Lorick. Of that group Lopez is the real prize, as he is a young and raw international prospect. All three pitchers profile as relievers, with Lopez really being the only one with a shot at being a starter. Tyrelle Harris is a good relief prospect who could move to the Majors quickly.

The Cubs also send the Braves some cash in the deal to cover Lee's salary. That could be one reason why it took three prospects to land him.

Here is a scouting report from Scouting The Sally on Robinson Lopez. He probably just makes the top-10 prospects in the Braves system, at least he did during the mid-season list. He'd probably be a bit lower now.

Derrek Lee will join the Braves on Friday when the team travels to Chicago, and he will wear uniform number 27 -- the same number Fred McGriff wore when he was in Atlanta. If you're in the press box make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy.

except the prospects...

but then I guess that was the deal, cash for prospects or neither. I guess that also blows a hole in the would have signed Sabol or Alvord but we were wanting to spend elsewhere idea, because we apparently had the cash.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 18, 2010 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Or maybe we traded the prospects...

Because we had no cash to work with at all.

We still don’t know how much cash we rec’d, could be it won’t be enough to cover the salary.

Lopez possesses a high-ceiling

But projectable 19-year-olds with poor command in Low-A are about 17-cents-a-dozen.

And with the successful transition of Medlen to a starting role (prior to the injury), the emergence of Beachy as a pretty great starting prospect, and the addition of Vizcaino to the system over the 2009-10 off-season, the Braves only put the most minuscule of dents in their organizational depth.

by HEYJUDE on Aug 18, 2010 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

He was wild when I saw him earlier...

and had problems throughout the season. But he had a good looking motion, and you could tell the stuff was obviously there. He’s a loss, and the other two weren’t exactly bad prospects either. But we had depth in pitching, so it’s not like the loss should be too hurtful.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 18, 2010 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Harris was really intriguing to me…and Lopez has a really hgih ceiling…but a low floor…such is life…every trade we make now I just pray all the prospects fail and the guy we trade for doesn fail…so we don’t have another Teixiera trade discussion on our hands

"No. Lonely people mixing with one another? Breeding? Creating an even lonelier generation? You're not even allowing natural selection do its work. Pssh. You're like the guy who invented the seat belt."

Also Drew/Wainwright,...

but agreed. People can’t let things go around here; we’re like packrats.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 19, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I at least understand the Teixiera argument…the Drew Wainright thing is just retarded to me…JD Drew was amazing….and w.o him our division streak would not have made it to 14. sure wainwright was good, and it would be nice to have him, but at the time of the trade it was a no brainer to make that and get drew

the Teixiera trade was at least questionable when it was made, you can make an argument that it was an unnecessary move, because our pitching wasn’t good enough no matter how much offense we had…and you could argue that we shouldn’t have given up two highly touted guys (even if they were in A ball and still teenagers and were all projection).

"No. Lonely people mixing with one another? Breeding? Creating an even lonelier generation? You're not even allowing natural selection do its work. Pssh. You're like the guy who invented the seat belt."

I concur...

about the only beef with the Drew deal is the idea that they asked for Horacio Ramirez first, and we said no, take Wainwright. But aside from that mistake, I agree on the summary of that as far as Drew’s worth in his lone Atlanta season.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 19, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

never heard that, but that sort of stuff happens when prospecting, unfortunately the FO isnt infallible with its projections

and also bullish rumors that no one can prove yea or nay on, such as they wanted Ramirez and we said take Wainwright, or we wanted Morales and the Angels said take Kotchman. It’s all speculation for letting 20/20 hindsight overrule real time decisions.

Good looking motion?

He gets great forearm lag, but that’s all genetics. The lower body is just ugly and I honestly don’t think he has a chance at being a starter unless he smooths it out. There’s just no way to get consistent control with that stupid move he does with his front leg.

by nixa37 on Aug 19, 2010 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

So I'm not a scout, are you?...

the motion looks solid to me when I saw it earlier this year, but as said above, it’s not like I’m an expert on the subject.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 20, 2010 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions

No but I coach youth pitchers

I’ve also done some work with 3D motion capture technology originally built for golf, trying to adapt it so we can use it for pitching.

What about his motion do you like?

by nixa37 on Aug 20, 2010 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

from an uneducated eye...

it seemed smooth and easily repeatable without much moving parts. It wasn’t some complex set up like Hideo Nomo or Dontrelle Willis. To me, and again, I’m about as far as it gets from being an expert on the subject, but to me, it was a simple leg lift on the front and he’d sling it. Looked pretty simple and basic from the wind up, but then again, I’ve seen him start once and don’t really know the physiology of this stuff.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 20, 2010 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

If the foot is violently changing direction mid-stride

I don’t see it as smooth and easily repeatable. If that movement gets off at all, his control is going to leave him completely. I also believe that is basically compensates for a timing issue in his delivery. If the timing was right on his arm circle he could bring the foot smoothly along the ground.

Also, just from watching his finish, I don’t think he maintains his arm speed at all on his off-speed stuff there is just so much less force after release, which to me is a bad sign. Could be why he struggles starting, because guys pick up on it in the longer stints.

by nixa37 on Aug 20, 2010 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

He is also 19

and can refine his motion. I’ve never said he was a Teheran with perfect polish, but the upside, IF he can correct some things, is certainly there so that if he does iron out the kinks he’ll rise fast. Big if, but it’s obviously there.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 20, 2010 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

You can't refine that motion

It needs a complete rebuild if he wants to be a starter. That’s the problem. If there was something you could build on there, maybe I’d like him a little more, but the foundation itself sucks. They’ll try and him as a starter for a few more years and then he’ll probably end up in the bullpen. Even if you went the complete rebuild route, a pitching motion is something you build over years. Its incredibly tough to completely change, and theres a chance the great velocity he has now would drop off a few ticks in the process.

They have him doing that to see if he can play over there without any problems. Then when he gets activated, Prado moves back to 2B, Glaus to 3rd, Lee on 1st and Infante becomes super sub again. That is about as strong of a team as we can possibly have.

the argument can be made, and Chipper has made it among others, that 1B can be as hard if not harder on the knees than 3B thanks to the footwork around the bag. 3B seems like much more natural motions for the legs.

it’s not like you have to play him there in Atlanta. Why not see how much he can move after a little rest and rehab on those legs. He played more 3B than 1B for the Cardinals just last year, so the shoulder isn’t the problem. It’s his ability to move that is the only question.

a) If it works at 3rd, he can start there and you’ve got a second slugger in the bottom half of the order keeping things alive from the right side with our lefty depth (Heap, Ankiel, Hinske, and a switch hitting Melky and Conrad). And if he does start at 3rd, I’d assume a lot of times we’d see Infante or another pinch run for him or replace him defensively after he steps to the plate any time after the 6th. Infante plays 2nd or 3rd depending on Prado, but it definitely allows him to go back to being the utility IF backup and leave Hernandez off the post season roster knowing he isn’t necessary for a SS off the bench.

b) then he’s a good power pinch hitter, and can also play 2 times per week to stay sharp and let Lee rest his back.

Wouldn't it be smarter to have Glaus as our big PH threat...?

A better version of Matt Stairs off the bench is what I’m getting at. How the hell can you take Infante out of the starting lineup when he’s hitting .340. That is the plan if Glaus plays 3B right?

by strider15 on Aug 18, 2010 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps...

But, if the 3B position is anything like it’s been in the past, Infante will still see plenty of action.

Regardless, Infante can move to left field if the Glaus works out as our 3B.

I think they are anticipating that. He just needs to rest and get readjusted at AAA. Might as well get readjusted playing 3rd too, so he can back up both positions.

and if he can, that gives them soo much versatility...

able to match lefty/righty hot/cold in so many ways thanks to Diaz vs. lefties, Hinske vs. righties, Ankiel vs. righties, Melky from both sides, Infante and Conrad and Prado and Hinske, among others, able to slide in all over the place.

Lee would be entrenched at 1st when healthy, Prado at 2nd or 3rd, Heyward in RF, McCann at C (in the post season I assume he starts every game), and you can fill in so many ways with Gonzalez or Infante at SS, Infante, Conrad, or Glaus able to match with Prado at 2nd/3rd, Glaus or Lee at 1st, Diaz, Melky, Hinske, or Infante in LF, Melky, Infante, or Ankiel in CF. We’d have our versatility back that we kind of lost when Chipper went down and Infante had to fill the void.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 18, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Reminds me a little of this year’s USC Gamecocks team. They had two constant players inn their lineup and everyone else was just mixed an matched per the other team’s starter.

by yondaime4 on Aug 18, 2010 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m just worried that the team will take Infante’s bat out of the lineup with Glaus going to 3rd. That’s my only concern. Infante is the 2009 version of Prado.

by romone_braves91 on Aug 18, 2010 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Infante has a great average, but he doesn’t walk alot and he is a light hitter.

A healthy Glaus is much better than Infante – and that isn’t a slight on Infante.

Glaus brings OBP and power while Infante brings average. I prefer players like Glaus, but neither are a bad option.

Besides, having Infante on the bench makes us that much better.

If Glaus can come back to hit like he did in May (or realistically the few weeks in June) then Glaus would be a better option than Infante. But as of right now with the sample size being July to August, Infante is the better bat than Glaus.

by romone_braves91 on Aug 18, 2010 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course, but the assumption is that a rested Glaus is different than the July-August Glaus.

Let’s hope the rest will help him. Until then, Infante/Heyward/Prado/Lee/McCann lineup will suffice for at least 3 to 4 runs per game (hopefully). This lineup going base on what I think Bobby will use.

by romone_braves91 on Aug 18, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I think if we give Glaus 2-3 weeks of rest and play him 4 days a week when he gets back we might actually get the May/June Glaus.

I think this is all deftly done on a lot of levels. From getting Lee and letting everyone think he was going after 3B help to giving Glaus a chance to redeem himself AND really help the team when he comes back by playing a little 3B. He gave up our most expendable ‘high ceiling’ guy for something that can really only help the team.

FUCKING BRILLIANT.

Which team has higher payroll?

Atlanta or Gwinnett?

On days KK is pitching, Glauosaurus is pickin the hot corner, and Nate McLouth covers the gaps like Neon Deion down the sideline, is that the highest paid AAA team in history?

You can't possibly be this big of a fool....

Martin Prado had a rehab assignment, does that mean he got his salary “to play in the minors”? Or when Jair Jurrjens was rehabbing in Gwinnet? Troy has made most of his money for playing with the big club, and his May/June was about enough production to justify his salary. So not only is it a rehab assignment (unlike KK or McLouth), but it’s not an accurate slice of his pay vs. time down there, and not even accurate on the money either (since I believe, too lazy to look it up) he’s making at MOST $4m, so the + sign shouldn’t be there, and he won’t be making that much since his DL stint and rehab time will likely keep him from making at least one, if not two, of his plate appearance bonuses. So in response to your above question, Troy Glaus is a) not getting paid over $4m, and b) damn sure isn’t getting paid that much “to play in the minors”.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 19, 2010 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm fully aware of that.

The fact remains, however, that he going to be suiting up for Gwinnett while also drawing his full salary. That would, by definition, contribute to a high salary base for that team. Futher, Kawakami’s stint there could easily be considered a conditioning or rehab assignment, because he’s got to do it to serve his designated role (starting pitcher) for the major league team.

Lopez is a middling prospect

Harris is probably a C because he’s stuck in the bullpen, and the third guy doesn’t even qualify as a prospect. Chances are none of the 3 ever do anything meaningful in the majors.

by nixa37 on Aug 18, 2010 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Lopez really isn't a middling prospect

He ended up in the TC’s top ten prospect list, and on a team that doesn’t have Teheran, Minor, Vizcaino, and Delgado, he’d have been much higher. Most teams don’t have anywhere near that kind of pitching depth. He should be a really good pitcher unless he suffers some kind of injury setback.

Dude he's treading water in low A

He might be top 15 in our system. There’s already talk he’ll end up in the bullpen. He’s a C+ prospect with an outside chance at B-.

I wouldn't exactly call TC a prospect authority

I wouldn’t say any of the other top 10 guys have graduated (I know Minor’s up but he’s not close to losing rookie eligibility yet), and Lopez has been absolutely horrid since that list was released. He has more BB than K since then. Even using your ranking, the eighth or ninth best prospect in our organization is in now way a lock for the top 200 and I think its really a stretch to rank Lopez that high in our organization right now.

by nixa37 on Aug 19, 2010 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Also

Plausibly being the top 200 isn’t quite the same as being on the cusp of the top 100 as Mr. Sanchez, who you were agreeing with, argues.

by nixa37 on Aug 19, 2010 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

at the beginning of the year I saw him cracking the top 100, he has struggled this year, but there’s no real reason to change his ceiling, if anything he has shown he can be flat out dominant.

That said, I certainly wouldn’t put him in the top 100, becuase he did struggle a little bit. In regards to the top 200, its so difficult to make a top 20 list that I have no clue if he would make a top 200 list, but there is certainly an argument that could be made for him. He is still young has a great fastball and decent offspeed offerings. (decent might be generous with the change, but I’m an optimist).

Honestly I don't know how you could see him as top 100

Without being a huge homer. I don’t mean any disrespect by that, but Lopez just isn’t that rare of a commodity. There are more pitchers in the low minors that can hit mid 90s in short stints than you would think. His numbers last year look pretty, but anyone with a FB that fast should dominate the GCL. Sure, Lopez had solid numbers after the first 2 months this year, but it was almost entirely out of the bullpen. As a SP, he’s only striking out 5.18 per 9 while walking 3.98. The only reason his numbers look decent is because he struck out 11.57 per 9 in relief.

For me, that doesn’t even get you in the discussion for the top 200. He’s a guy that throws hard but has shown no ability as a starter. On top of that, I see no way he can be a consistent starter with his mechanics. The crap he does with his plant leg just doesn’t lend itself to repeatable mechanics. He’s got awesome genetics that allow him to get great forearm lag and that’s it. He’d have to completely rebuild his mechanics for me to take him seriously as a starter. Relievers don’t crack the top 200 unless they’re close to big league ready with at least a plus FB and breaking pitch. Lopez isn’t close.

by nixa37 on Aug 19, 2010 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe you misunderstood me….I meant at the beginning of the year I forecasted he would be around a top 100 prospect by the end of the year…if he was able to harness his fastball and do what he is capable of he would easily be a top 100 at the end of this year…now that didnt happen because he struggled in his first full season of professional baseball (which happens and I don’t put that much stock into it, especially not as a 19 year old). he clearly isnt a top100 right now. he is close to the top 200 though and I don’t think there be a lot of complaints from people if he was around 190-200…it also wouldnt surprise me if he wasnt on a top 300 list. There is a fair amount of fluctuation in regards to the opinion of prospects once you get past the top 25 or so.

I'm not sure why you disagreed in the 1st place then

I said he wouldn’t crack any top 200s, Mr. Sanchez said he was on the cusp of some top 100s, then you said I was wrong and you thought his assessment was right. Now you’re back tracking and saying people wouldn’t complain if he was at the very back end of a top 200 list. He’s a guy with a big fastball and an outside chance of being a starter. There are probably 30 guys just like him in the low minors right now, but because they don’t play for the Braves you and I don’t know them. The only reason people around here think highly of him is because he was our low minors arm with a big fastball.

by nixa37 on Aug 19, 2010 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

You're being a douche...

he’s a 19 year old with mid 90s gas and loads of potential. He is far from a finished product but the upside is clearly there for someone to put him in a top 100 if they like what they see. It’s not uncommon for players with Lopez’ exact profile to sneak in at the bottom of those lists by someone who likes what they see and takes a flier on a young kid with high upside. In fact, I’d say a good stint with the Cubs, and the very nature of his new affiliation and becomming possible their “highest upside” arm in the minors, he can make a list.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 20, 2010 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm a douche because I disagree with you?

Seriously man? All I’m doing is explaining why I think you guys are way too high on him. Guys with maxed out frames, questionable mechanics, and bad track records as a starter in low A ball don’t belong anywhere near a top 100 list. Maybe if they have college pedigree they get the benefit of the doubt, but that’s it.

Lopez is a 19 year old with a relatively big fastball. That’s it. There are plenty of guys like him in the minors. The only reason you’ve heard of him is because he was a Braves minor leaguer. He was nowhere near the top 100 coming into this year and he’s pitched terribly as a starter. I can’t imagine anyone considering him for their top 100.

by nixa37 on Aug 20, 2010 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

No, you're being a douche because you're focusing on all his problems...

very few kids who start A ball at 18 excel. No, he’s not Julio Teheran, but the stuff and potential is obvious. Scouts every now and then fawn over guys like that, and now that he’s a Cub, I can see him having a good year next year and climbing up the charts fast.

It’s not like the guy is an unknown, the potential is there, and he’s far from a finished product, but if he figures it out he makes a move up the charts and fast. It’s a big if, but the potential is there for a kid who was 18 when he arrived in the spring.

And you are absolutely incorrect on the “only” reason I’ve heard of him. Maybe you follow Braves only, but over the last few years I’ve paid more and more attention to minor leaguers, including non-Braves.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 20, 2010 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I pointed out his pluses

He’s 19 and he’s got a big fastball. Its not an incredibly rare package. Even with the elite velocity, the fastball still isn’t a plus pitch because of the lack of movement and his tendency to leave it up. That’s from Mike Newman who really likes the kid.

Honestly, I don’t think scouts fawn over guys like Lopez nearly as much as you think. It’d be one thing if he had a good breaking pitch to go with it, but that’s still below average.

You need to get over this idea that if he figures it out, he goes to shoot up the charts. Its not a matter of figuring it out with him. Its a matter of refining the secondary pitches. That’s certainly something its possible to do, but its not something you assume a pitcher will do just because he’s young. At this point, I’d take a 21 year old that sat 90-92 with solid movement and a refined breaking ball over Lopez.

I follow the minor leagues as closely as possible. You can find me on Sickels SBNation site more than you can here. That’s why I’m so surprised by people being up in arms about us losing a C+ prospect that’s done nothing to improve on that status this year.

by nixa37 on Aug 20, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not up in arms...

just recognizing the upside of the player. I think it’s a good deal, and agree with much of what you say. But I also think he’s 19, with a long ways to go, and it’d be much easier to say what he can or can’t be in two years than it is now.

Also, Mike Newman, while running a great blog, is far from an expert on the subject himself, and I think he’d readily admit that. I also think his thoughts on Lopez are far from a definitive final judgment on the man.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 20, 2010 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I know about Mike

And like I said, he’s actually very high on him. I do think its important to remember than there are three important things a fastball can have, and although Lopez is elite in velocity, he is lacking in movement and command. If he can add one of those two it probably goes to a plus pitch, but obviously there are no guarantees.

And yeah, it will be a lot easier to tell what Lopez will be in two years, but right now he’s just a lottery ticket. He’s a legit prospect worth following, no doubt, but he’s a long way off from being a top 100 guy in my book.

Lopez might be a good 2/3 starter, but it’ll be 2012 at the absolute earliest. Harris is a 7th or 8th inning guy at best, and Lorick is a total un-known.

Can we afford to pay that much with Chipper coming back and a nearly MLB-ready 1B in the wings??

I’d love him to decline, but I think he’s got a good shot at making more thru arbitration than he would on the market, which will include Dunn, LaRoche (assuming D-Backs don’t take that option), Konerko and Carlos Pena.

Personally, I could stand to see him here another year, if we offered arb and he took it. I’m not sure that’s how we’d like to spend our money, but I also think this year has been more of an aberration than anything else.

I guess it's not class they're lacking...

when coming to Coors Field. It’s sobriety.

I’ve never been to Wrigley, so I can’t say anything for their home fans. But when they come to town, it’s amateur hour downtown.

I’ve seen Cubs fans do just about everything you’d expect to see at closing time on New Year’s Eve in the middle of the summer. Passed out, check. Walking into oncoming traffic, check. And so forth.

That said, if I ever get the opportunity to visit Wrigley, I can’t say I won’t get too deep into Old Styles and find myself in a similar predicament…

Robinson Lopez – He’s a 3 pitch guy sits 92-94 from the wind with the FB and tops out at 96, but from the stretch he loses velocity and command, his CB is his best off-speed pitch in which he gets most of his Ks, and he shows a change but rarely uses it like most young pitchers. His command is very iffy right now but he’s only 19 so he has plenty of time to work on that.

Tyrelle Harris – Has a plus FB that topps out around 97 but he sits around 93-94, he also has a CB which looked more slurvy to me when he was in Rome but it’s still his out pitch. He still needs to work on his control though but he’s a nice power arm.

Jeffrey Lorick – He looked good out of the pen when I saw him. He was 90-91 with the FB and hit 93 a couple times, has a nice 11-6 CB, and a really good change. His command and control was good that day he K’d two guys and got the other to ground out weakly to SS.

thank you for that hunny

Pretty much what Yonda and Jay said…I really like Lopez (or i really liked him comin ginto the year, he hasnt impressed this year). Lopez’s biggest asset is his age and his fastball. Harris looks like he good be a very good relief arm if he can mainatin his control

Lopez is the gem here and a lot of people had him tabbed for a breakout performance this season but once he exceeded his IP from last season it has been downhill since. I don’t believe he is a fututre reliever yet like Gondeee but currently he only has one above average pitch (FB). Ty’Relle Harris is a guy that will most likely help out a major league team in the future out of the pen but more likely as a 7th inning pitcher, maybe in a setup role at his best. Lorick has been decent in Rome so far this season but nothing about him is wowing. I’ll miss Lopez but he was our 6th best pitching prospect (Teheran, Minor, Delgado, Hoover, Kimbrel) and probably didn’t have a spot in the future.

I dont like it

Lopez is a great prospect, top-10 on most people’s list and number seven on mine. 19-year-olds who throw mid 90’s are hard to come by, holding on to them is usually a good idea.

Lopez alone was bad, and even though Harris and Lorick aren’t too valuable, I don’t like the idea of packaging three minor leaguers with potential for a month and a half rental that isn’t a team changer.

Lee is an improvement, but not a big enough one. I was against bringing Freddie up, but I would have went with him and kept our prospects before making this move, considering the asking price.

Lee’s numbers have been inconsistent. He’s got a rough back, although the team thinks it’s okay, which worries me as well. I just don’t know if I like the thought of Lee over Freeman for a month and a half while losing a prospect with as good of an arm as Lopez. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Robinson have a better major league career than every Braves pitching prospect sans Teheran and Minor.

Wait--

The team docs think his back is OK, and that worries you as well? How does that make sense?

It’s possible Robinson turns out as a #2 starter. But it’s much more likely that he’s just a back-end guy, bullpen guy, or a total flame-out. You treat an A-ball pitcher like he’s going to fulfill his maximum potential. Guys like Lopez are actually not all that hard to find, especially in our system.

These are (most likely) the same doctors that were fine with Kotsay’s back as well, and he ended up having problems with it too. A cort. shot will help a bulging disk, but it can cause a ton of other problems as well.

I don’t hate the trade and I completely understand the methodology of it, I just don’t necessarily like it. I like Lee as a player and I was all for the trade until I saw who we gave up. Lopez is one of the guys I am higher on than most, so it stings to see a guy like that given up for a rental.

Lopez has the potential...

but it’s just that, potential. He’s got a long ways to go with control, etc before he’s big league ready. Maybe he makes it, and is a huge loss, maybe he doesn’t. He’s the risk we take for making them throw in cash. Let’s just hope it’s not a Blake/Santana part two.

its different than blake/santana…that deal was stupid at the time at worst this deal is maybe, possibly, questionable

It's not that bad.

We have at least 5 pitching prospects more valuable than Lopez (JT, Minor, Arodys, Delgado, Beachy) and probably more. Lopez is also a long ways from the majors, and anything can happen there. I like him, but we can lose him and not miss a beat at all.

Lee’s probably a pretty big improvement over Glaus in my opinion. If he plays well, this deal will be worth it. If he doesn’t, it probably won’t be, but that’s true of all deals. I’d rather have hung on to Robinson, but that’s the cost of doing business in a pennant race.

is that this allows us to DL Troy and give his legs a much-needed rest. I don’t expect him to be able to play 3B when he gets back, at least not for more than a few innings at a time, but I do expect that he’ll be a better hitter when his legs are less painful to him.

We technically only traded 3 players, but should we include the two drafted prospects that we supposedly didnt sign so that we would have the cash to make this deal? If you include those, this deal certainly looks a little different.

“The Cubs will pay the Braves $1.7MM, half of the $3.4MM owed to Lee between now and the end of the season. The 34-year-old, who hits free agency at season’s end, has a .251/.335/.416 line in 475 plate appearances and projects to be a Type B free agent this offseason. Lee has a .939 OPS since the All-Star break, but is currently dealing with back soreness.”

They project numbers out as if you were healthy the whole time, though there is some sort of limit to it. Regardless, Lee isn’t going to be offered arbitration. He would accept it without thinking twice (especially if he was a type A) and we don’t have room in the budget to be paying him ~12 million dollars.

FINALLY ! At Long Last

At long last we have a true impact bat and true cleanup hitter in D. Lee. Should be interesting to see how he performs for the rest of the season. D. Lee has always be a true pro and a great power hitter. Although his best power hitting seasons are behind him he is still a long ball threat and a great addition to a ball club that lacked such a healthy player that is the caliber of Lee. I love the way the club is going and if it took Chipper getting hurt for the season to acquire Lee then I would make that trade off anytime. Plus for what we gave up (in my opinon) nothing all that great to the Cubs it was a true steal, I mean three low – class A ball guys and only one really has the chance to start and be anything special.

Stinks that we don’t control Lee for anytime after this season but I would make that trade all day long for a real power threat or rental type player. Cubs you got taken once again have fun being in the cellar where you truly belong and it is moves like this accepting C- prospects for impact players which is why you are where you are at as a franchise which is a joke !!!

Glaus starting at 3B would be great for sure but it may prove to diffcult for him to do at this point in his career. Lineup would be a crazy good with both Troy and Lee in their together.
