Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Braves Would Upgrade By Acquiring Derrek Lee

By acquiring Derrek Lee from the Chicago Cubs, the Braves would upgrade their offense, defense, and their bench. While Troy Glaus is almost a year younger than Derrek Lee, his offensive output is getting old fast, and so the Braves look to be moving quickly after the season ending injury to Chipper Jones to find a player who can add more offense to their lineup.

By replacing Glaus with Lee they can remove a player who has become an offensive liability, and replace him with a player whose offense is on the rise, and still keep both hot-hitting Venezuelans -- Martin Prado and Omar Infante -- in the lineup.

This first base replacement also brings another potent right-handed power bat into the everyday lineup, one that has been steadily getting better all year. Lee's monthly batting splits look like this:

Average On-Base Slugging
April .205 .327 .352
May .257 .352 .381
June .237 .308 .398
July .281 .330 .427
August .306 .381 .694

Whereas Glaus' monthly batting splits look like this:

Average On-Base Slugging
April .194 .310 .292
May .330 .408 .534
June .237 .364 .505
July .182 .312 .234
August .208 .255 .375

The decent overall numbers from Glaus were essentially a product of one and half months of stellar production. The rest of his performance this year has been below the Francoeur-line, whereas Lee has been getting better each month.

Lee is also a better defensive first baseman. Glaus' range has been limited in recent months because of his sore knees, so adding Lee would upgrade the Braves defense down the stretch, and at the same time it would remove the biggest defensive liability from the field.

Glaus would then move to a pinch hitting role (likely after a short stint on the disabled list to rest his knees and open up a roster spot for Lee), which adds another power bat to a bench that includes Eric Hinske and Brooks Conrad. The Atlanta bench was slightly depleted when the injury to Chipper Jones forced Omar Infante into regular duty, but Infante is the Braves hottest hitter and should remain in the lineup every day.

This rumored trade is actually a much better option than previously rumored deals that attempted to find a replacement third baseman. Martin Prado is perfectly capable of handling the hot corner, and Omar Infante is a solid defender at second base. Keeping those two in the lineup and in the field is important and removing Troy Glaus from the field and the lineup helps the team.

My guess is that with two first baseman on the team the Braves would not recall Freddie Freeman this year. If the Braves were looking at Freeman as an option he would have been called up already. By that non-move the team is sending a message that they want Freeman to get a full year of triple-A, and not have to worry about finding him playing time during a playoff run.

Don't get hung up on the Braves offering Lee arbitration at the end of the year either (assuming we acquire him). Atlanta would not want to get stuck with the one year bill were he to accept, and Lee would be a tougher player to move under the threat of arbitration than Rafael Soriano was last year.

Assuming that Lee's back is up to the challenge, it would be nice to see Lee in a Braves uniform by week's end. Perhaps we can complete a deal by tomorrow afternoon, and then just meet Lee in Chicago when the Braves open up a three-game set against the Cubs on Friday.

can we really make this happen?

If this trade goes through we have a better cleanup hitter immediately. Let’s just go ahead and assume we win the division cause its very likely. This trade makes us a better team against the Pads vaunted pitching staff and Cards elite aces. Let’s just assume we face the cards in the first round. Do we want Lee going against Wainwright, Carpenter, westbrook and Garcia or do we want this bum Glaus. I think this trade would be excellent for the Braves

Matt Diaz interview on XM

5 quickee (useless) questions at the end (there were no newsbreakers otherwise):

Who needs a makeover in your clubhouse the most? “Peter Moylan.” Why? “He’s Australian.”
Who do you least wanna sit next to on the team charter? “Brian McCann.” Why? “He sweats so much you’d actually get wet sitting next to him.”
When you wanna get away from baseball and just want to watch something on TV, what do you watch? “Like any manly-man, ‘The Bachelorette’”
Title for team reality show? “I don’t know — The Skipper and His Minions”
What actor would play you in a movie about the Braves? “Ed Norton – he’s not good-looking and neither and I.”

Otherwise, he would welcome Derrek Lee as a new 1st baseman. Also: hasn’t any idea how he would even approach an at bat against Jonny Venters.

Does Anybody Here Know "Somebody" on the Stadium Staff??

I’d love to see a practical joke done on Caveman: here’s the deal… one of his brothers is a new breakout artist in Christian music circles: Jonny Diaz. Here’s his pic…

One of Jonny’s hits is a song called “More Beautiful You” — about early teen girls and their perception of beauty. It’s really on target as far as that goes. HOWEVER, if that song were to become the walk-up music for brother Matt…. the chorus goes like this:

“There could never be a more beautiful you…don’t buy the lies, disguises and hoops they make you jump through…You were made to fill a purposes that only you could do, so there could never be a more beautiful you.”

I’d say that would be sick for a one-time dig. What say ye?

Same as now, most likely

I think Glaus goes to the DL if we trade for Lee.

If not, I don’t know who you’d take off the roster…probably need Diorys for utility role now, Hicks is gone. You’d have to think Ankiel or Hinske would leave temporarily until rosters expand.

I think it helps the offense a lot – and it gives Troy some much needed rest.

I only hope that this doesn’t relegate Troy to KK-land when he comes off the DL (or is rested up).

I would prefer we upgrade in CF (or at least play Melky everyday) and SS (you know my thoughts there) or find a replacement for Chipper, but I cannot dislike bringing in Derek Lee – especially with the way he is hitting lately!

…but once you are in waiver territory, you take what you can get. Decent CF’s and SS’s better than Alex Gonzalez aren’t going to clear waivers.

Yeah, I know. That’s why this deal makes sense. If this were a deadline deal, it would be a bit of a different story, but in this context, it is about as good a deal as a team can make.

But I think that's the problem.

There aren’t any solid CF’s with expiring contracts on non-contending teams. Let’s look at NL first: no old CF’s in DC, Maybe Cody Ross in Florida but he doesn’t appear to be available, Beltran is available, but who would want that contract? Bourn is young in Houston, the Cubs have two more years with Byrd, the Pirates have MacCutcheon who’s not available, the Brewers traded their old CF already. Dodgers have a young Kemp, Rockies have all kids, and Arizona has a relatively young Young. The same story in the AL, I am sure.

by cavebird on Aug 18, 2010 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I don’t dispute that. CF are hard to come by right now – at least, the good ones are. I guess that’s why we got stuck with Stankiel.

I don't think Bobby would keep that many position players

After the 5 starters, that would only leave us with 6 bullpen arms. I think Bobby would want to have 7 arms in the BP. That’s where this will get very interesting, to see how he handles the bench spots

you also forget that most teams go back to 4 starters for the playoffs, so

someone in the starting rotation can go back to the bullpen

James T Paulson

by Jtpdolphins2009 on Aug 18, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

so for the playoffs it would be

4 starting pitchers
8 position players
6 bench players

that equals 18 players, which still leaves you 7 guys for the bullpen

James T Paulson

by Jtpdolphins2009 on Aug 18, 2010 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunn would be sent down, JJ, Huddy, Hanson and D Lowe are the playoff starters

that leaves Venters, Farnsworth, Moylan, Saito and Wagner

when O’Flaherty comes back that is 6 bullpen guys and then the 7th is either Martinez or if you want to keep Mike Minor with the big club you put him in the bullpen

Is Minor on an innings limit?...

There are quite a few I’d rather have in our pen than him.
25 man for the post season?
Heyward
Prado
Infante
McCann
Ross
Lee
Glaus
Conrad
Gonzalez
Diaz
Melky
Ankiel
Hiske
Hudson
Hanson
Jurrjens
Wagner
Saito
Moylan
Venters
EOF
Farnsworth

That give me 22. Lowe or Minor could be the 4th starter (I’d assume Lowe given the penchant for vets) makes 23, and then with the last two you’re looking either a reliever (Dunn, Kimbrel, Marek, Hyde, among others would likely get this over Minor, especially Dunn and Kimbrel) if not two relievers. If only one reliever, then a utility IF/pinch runner such as Diory or Hicks.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 18, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Id go D Lowe as the 4th starter – 23

At least with one of those over Martinez (and Minor, to a lesser extent, simply because of innings and youth).

No

If Freeman came up he would ride the bench in the middle of a playoff race – no place for a rookie – especially with two veteran first baseman already on the roster. Its just not a smart idea to pull up a big rookie and sit him, he needs to keep working away in triple A.

by sag969 on Aug 18, 2010 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

None of these are good reasons not to call up Freeman in September.

1. Yes, he would be sitting on the bench, but isn’t getting acquainted to major league life on the bench better than sitting at home because the minor league season is over?

2. You are not starting his clock. 40-man roster service time does not count.

Honestly, I don’t see a good reason not to bring him up to have a look around, even if you don’t play him unless we have a dead game or two at the end of the season.

by cavebird on Aug 18, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Had no clue the minor league season ended a full month before major league.

the braves might make money on this trade...

troy glaus has an extra 1.35 million left on the table for performance bonuses. currently, glaus is at 466 plate appearances and his next bonus kicks in at 500 (400k). If he becomes the bat off the bench, he’ll likely meet the 500 pa, but not the 550 or 600, saving the braves 950k.

Also, if the braves are sending 2 prospects to the cubs (schafer and some other player the org has soured on), then the cubs will likely pick up much of lee’s remaining salary, thus making money for the braves, upgrading the lineup, upgrading the bench, and getting rid of excess.

I'd rather keep Johnson

and don’t consider him that PTBNL type. Too much upside. I’m thinking more minor league filler, a Noboa that we acquired for the DSL, or Mike Jones, or Mauro Gomez, Barbaro Canizares, Wes Timmons, Clint Sammons, etc.

One of my all time faves.

no the mets are still better at most positions:

Schnider/Mcccan – tie (schnider has better d)
Kotch / Delgao – 38 hrs from carlos
Castillo/Johnson – castillo can return to a .300 hitter but jonson barely wins
wright/jones – no contest, wright
reyes/who??? – reyes wins, best ss in the majors
tatis/diaz – tatis raked last year
beltran/anderson – beltran is an all-star
francouer/church – church raked before his concusion he will rebond

santana/lowe – santana is the best sp in the majors
perez/hudson – perez has better potential plus hudson was hurt last yr
pelfrey/jurgens – jurgens gives up 2 many hits
maine/vazquez – vazquez wins barely cuz he had a good 07 but maine has more potential
redding/campillo – redding through more innings, campillo would have a 500 era if he starts again ppl will figur ehim out

k-rod had the most svs, he is the best lcoser in baseball, no contest

You're 100% correct

But you didn’t read gondee’s post. Or understand his point.

Yes, their season numbers are amazingly similar, but Lee has been very hot post ASB while Glaus has stayed in a rut the last two months. If Lee can come and produce now (while Glaus gets some much needed rest) its a win for the Braves. Also, Lee is a better defender, which makes it another plus.

Yes? It doesn’t seem like this would be a move to put one guy in all the time over the other. When Glaus needs rest, Lee will play. If Lee goes cold again or appears to need rest, Glaus will go back in. But Glaus clearly needs rest.

Last I checked....

We have played very well in the last 3 weeks and ever since the Phililes knocked our lead down to 1 1/2 games we have held them off. Obviously the Phillies fans don;t know much about baseball or else they would realize we could use an extra guy at 1B because Glaus has been playing hurt

That is not desparate by any means, that is a smart team making a smart move at a great time to fill a need.

If they think going for Lee is desperate, than I say them getting Oswalt was a desperate move because they knew their starting rotation could not compete with ours.

I think I’d go Prado/Infante/Heyward, and wouldn’t play Ankiel until the laterinnings for his defense.

really?

You like Prado leading off more than Infante?

by Braves24 on Aug 18, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Prado is our best hitter, and I want him getting as many at bats as possible.

I also feel like Infante is a better at the little things — bunting, moving the runners over, etc. — and I’d love to have him between Prado and our big hitters.

A comment from Phillies nation:
I think that the Braves will be right there until the end… their pitching is too good for them to fade BUT when you break it down, they just don’t have the horses. They’re scoring runs and winning games using smoke and mirrors… there is only one position player on the Braves that would even start for the Phillies (Brian McCann). Infante, Prado, Heyward, Gonzalez… they’re nice but they’re certainly not Utley, Polanco, Werth and Rollins. Hinske, Ankiel, Glaus/Lee… really? I’m not saying your team is bad but side by side, there is no comparison… we’re just better than you

Classic.

Prado, the starting All-Star second baseman, wouldn’t start? Interesting. Heyward and Gonzalez? Come on. The rest of the guys he named are platoon guys. Sometimes, a solid 14-15 guys beat a good everyday 9.

by hailtogeorgia on Aug 18, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

It is a cute avoidance technique.

Yes, they have Utley at second. Therefore, on the Phillies, Prado would start at third.

by cavebird on Aug 18, 2010 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. It takes an entire team to get somewhere. I wonder which manager feels more comfortable in the late innings of a close ballgame when they have to turn the game over to the bullpens. I wonder which manager has more confidence in their bench. Not to mention, good pitching will shut down good hitting 9 times out of 10, and pitching is what takes you places in the playoffs.

"Chase Utley can't polish Martin's shoes right now" Joe Simpson

by sleezer1788 on Aug 18, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely.

A good bullpen and a talented bench is what ends up making the difference in many games. For this reason, it’s no wonder that the Braves lead the league with 20 walk off wins. The Phillies best nine may be better than our best nine straight up, but when the time comes to pinch hit for the pitcher in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game with a runner in scoring position, Bobby Cox knows he has guys that will deliver. Charlie Manuel? I bet he’s a bit less confident.

granted looking at the stats

their offense is slightly better in some categories and we are better in others, overall their offense is just a bit better

but how about the pitching?

our pitchers are 2nd in hits allowed, runs allowed, earned runs allowed and 1st in HRs allowed

Phillies pitchers are 14th, Tied for 10th, Tied for 10th and 24th in those categories respectively

Smoke and mirrors?

Let’s seeeeee…. recent examples:
Phillies beat Marlins in 10 innings 2 weeks ago after a blown foul ball call would have won it for the Fish.
Phillies beat Dodgers after scoring 4 in the 8th, then 4 more in the 9th off their bullpen.

Not saying that the Braves didn’t steal one of the Dodgers themselves, but if you think the Braves are alone in this, then you’re not looking hard enough.

4:25pm: The Braves acquire Lee for three pitching prospects, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter). The Cubs get right-hander Robinson Lopez, right-hander Tyrelle Harris and left-hander Jeffrey Lorick according to the Cubs, who will send the Braves money in the deal.
