PrintThe Braves could be close to acquiring much needed offensive help in the form of Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee, according to Chicago writer David Kaplan.

As a 10-5 man (10 years in the major leagues and the last five with the same team) Lee has the right to reject a trade as he did when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim tried to acquire him in late July. However, sources close to Lee tell us that he will approve a deal to Atlanta because the Braves are leading their division thus giving him a shot at winning another World Series ring.
The deal would not involve any major Braves prospects, but Atlanta would likely pick up much of the remaining salary on Lee. The only hold-up is apparently the Braves concern over Lee's troubled back, which has led him to miss the last few games. Lee is a free agent after this season.
Lee has hit .313 with a .939 OPS since the All-Star break while Troy Glaus has hit just .196 with a .595 OPS since the break. Clearly this would be a rip and replace kind of deal, with the Braves hoping to benefit from a rejuvenated Derrek Lee.
The Braves probably wouldn't have to give up too much if anything in return. The Cubs are apparently seeking some salary relief for the rest of the year, so it may be the always lovable "player to be named later." We have tons of C-plus pitching that the Cubs would enjoy. I would think if we did give up anyone, it wouldn't be more than a Scott Diamond type player.
More on this as the situation develops.
MLBTR reports that Lee "projects" to be a Type-B free agent at the end of the year, meaning if the Braves acquire him and offer him arbitration and he were to sign with another team, we would get a first round supplemental pick. MLBTR also says that Lee is owed $3.4 million between now and the end of the season.
UPDATE 11:15am:
Some Atlanta beat writers have chimed in via Twitter with positive thoughts that this deal will get done, and Ken Rosenthal says that the deal "has legs." We may simply have to wait a day or two for a clean bill of health on Derrek Lee's bum back. Along those same lines, the Braves may not initially trade anyone to the Cubs for Lee, instead agreeing upon a player to be named later. This could be any of several players and would likely be based on how well Lee performs once in a Braves uniform. This would protect Atlanta from surrendering a good prospect in the event that Lee re-injures his back.
A possible Lee acquisition also means that we likely won't see Freddie Freeman get a call-up this year.

My thoughts went to where does Glaus go?...
DL him to rest his legs and see if he can still handle 3B, or else he moves to the bench or works a 2 on, 2 off type arrangement with Lee to keep both fresh and healthy since they both have health issues?

This is the ultimate question. Can Glaus make the throw from 3B? If so, this is a great deal. If not, I hate it. And I’m really hoping that Glaus heard this straight from Wren rather than via rumor and innuendo. Last thing ATL needs is for Lee’s back to not check out and have a disgruntled Glaus at 1B.

Even for first base, it would be great to get him a couple of weeks off to regain his legs. I had been kinda hoping Freddie would be brought up to do just that, but this works at least at well… if that’s indeed where we’re going.

If the idea is to give Glaus two weeks to rest, I’d prefer a simpler way to do that which didn’t cost $3M+.

Bear in mind...
Those two weeks are 40% of the remaining season and we’re in a pennant race.
I’d be okay with giving him all the time he needs going down the stretch, if Lee can prove to be equally effective. Three weeks, four, whatever he needs. The same goes for Lee, should his back prove to be an issue.
If both can find themselves healthy during the final two weeks, I think we’re a veritable postseason lock. Not to mention the fact that we’ll be able to play the hot hand come playoffs time.
I’d bring up the DH situation as well, but no need to get ahead of ourselves just yet.

I’d rather use that $3M+ to fix the 3B problem than spell Glaus for two weeks, because I wonder what else that $3M could buy right now. But Wren obviously knows more about this than we do on the outside looking in. I do think having a healthy Glaus and Lee at the corners in September would be way sick.

You’ve got to believe that with two weeks of rest, Glaus will suddenly become an above-average hitter and a decent fielder again. I think that would be wishful thinking at best.

Ankiel is a BUM!
Ankiel needs to sit….He’s another version of Nate Mclouth. Melky has the 2nd best BA on the team. He should be our starting CF, Period. He has a great arm and his defense is good enough, if not, great.
If we get Lee, and Glaus can play some 3rd base, WOW. But i doubt he can play the hot corner with two bum knees anyways. But just a though…

You missed the point. If the Braves really have an extra $3M to pay towards this year’s playoff chase, I think they could use it more wisely than adding another 1B and sitting/shelving Glaus.

No idea. I’d prefer someone who could play 3B like Figgins, but I get that he would have cost more/meant we’d lose some prospects.
Fundamentally, it seems clear that you and others weigh the last 6 weeks of Glaus’s offensive struggles much more heavily than I do, and that’s fine.

If he can move at 1B, he can move at 3B. In fact, he technically probably has to move less at 3B than 1B, since he doesn’t have to get to the bag. But it’s all a moot point—down below in the thread someone mentioned that Wren said Glaus wouldn’t be an option for 3B.
So I guess this really would be a Lee vs. Glaus deal. Not sure I like that.

Could be…I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out. If Glaus is an option for 3B in September, we can certainly “muddle through” 2 weeks with him on the shelf and Lee at 1B.

So confused...
You guys act like Glaus has done something for the team since mid June. He came through with a couple hits this week, prior that he had done nothing offensively since he cooled off the second half of June. I have no idea why you’d ever want to start Glaus at third base over Prado anyways. Infante is going to do a hell of a lot more damage at the plate than Glaus, so you want both in the lineup. Lee will be a HUGE upgrade defensively over Glaus, and has the potential to do better at the plate as well. I certainly don’t think he can do any worse.
Let’s try to remember that unfortunately for Glaus, the season is longer than 1.5 months long. Glaus has arguably been the weakest link on this team since he cooled down. And yes, this is considering the Braves outfield situation.
I think your confusion stems from the fact that some of us don’t make assessments based on the most recent 6 weeks of data.
I do think Lee is a marginal upgrade over Glaus—I just think they could have made more impact with the $3M had they spent it elsewhere.

and is signed through the rest of this year. So obviously, just a stopgap until Freeman next year.

I think they want to not pay the approximately 3.6 million remaining on his contract which is what we “give” them. All in all I don’t think it would be all that bad for us, gives us a middle of the order type player and he’s in the final year of his contract so we’re not saddled with a terrible Cubs contract going forward.

You are thinking of Zambrano.
Yes, Lee had a run-in with Zambrano in the dugout, but that was all Zambrano and landed Zambrano on the restricted list. I don’t recall any clubhouse issues at all with Lee.

There may be something to this rumor, but at the moment, it’s just a rumor.
Despite Lee’s good hitting since the ASB, as you note, he can be very streaky and has now missed the last two games with back problems. As noted, he has 10-and-5 rights and earlier this year rejected trades to the Angels and Rangers.
So, in short, who knows?

I’m skeptical.
1B is not our weekness lately. We just lost our 3B and have bad bats at both SS and CF (assuming Ankiel is the starter now).
Lee’s back worries me more than anything, but if we could alternate him and Glaus, keeping both healthy, that would be quite a 1B tandem.

And I wouldn’t call Alex Gonzalez a “bad bat”, definitely not 3-hole caliber, but a good bottom of the order run producer.

but I agree. Melky has been the best option for CF since May but I hope Ankiel can take that title
I’ve gotten to really like Melky. Granted, he’s not the most talented ballplayer, but he gets the job done and busts his butt out there. Right now I’d rather see him in center than Ankiel.

Has more upside than Melky in CF. Ankiel has better range defensively, and has more power at the plate. Melky was a sure out just about every plate appearance early in the season. He’s picked it up lately, but I prefer him in left field defensively.
Ankiel hasn’t done much at the plate yet, but I can’t believe you guys are acting like Cabrera did anything for the first 3 months of the season. Ankiel will strike out a lot, but when he does put it in play it is usually going for extra bases, all you really need from a bottom 3 guy.
Melky was a sure out just about every plate appearance early in the season
Just like everyone else on the team not named Heyward or Prado.

Well, first base is our weakness lately. Glaus flat out sucks. In the 2nd half, Glaus is hitting .196/.291/.304 compared to gonzo’s .245/.311/.407 since joining the braves. Also gonzo can play defense and glaus runs like forrest gump before he got his leg braces off.

Even you admitted, a Glaus/Lee combo would be pretty sweet. I 100% feel that the problem with Glaus is his health, not his skill.
With time off, Glaus will be fine, and in the meantime, having Lee would be a nice insurance policy.

Glaus hits when the game is out of hand
When it counts he Ks, pops up or hits into a DP. He was lucky his team bailed him out after he popped up to Loney with 2 on and 0 out. Also the day he had the two hits one was a pop up to RF that the guy lost in the sun. Glaus stinks bro. just face it.
A week is DEFINITELY enough data to make pennant race decisions on.

I will have to disagree...
Firstbase is the the position struggling the most of late…We lost our 3B but can replace him with Prado…
And like you said, we can rotate Glaus and Lee to keep both fresh…Then, when we face the AL team in the WS, one can be a DH…

Prado cannot replace Chipper. Prado was already in the lineup with Chipper. If he replaces Chipper, then you have to replace Prado with someone.
That just cannot be done with this current roster.

Remember, however...
…we are past the non-waiver trade deadline. We can’t just grab anyone we want. Even if we could use a 3B or CF more, if Lee improves the team for a middling prospect and a little bit of cash, why not do it? It isn’t like we are likely to find something better at a position we need from someone who clears waivers.
I’m not against the move. If it is the best move that can be made, then so be it. I just think we have bigger weaknesses that should be addressed that 1B.
Even if Glaus doesn’t get it back together, Freeman is an in-house option that saves $3.4M over the next 2 months.

Actually it can be denied.
I think it is arguable either way. Glaus over his last 7 games is .200/.238/.450/.688 with 1 HR, 5 RBIs, and 7 Ks. That is better than he was doing before then, so you could say it is heating up. On the other hand, it still pretty much sucks, so that makes it hard to say he is heating up.
So it's like an ice cube
heating up to become an ice-cold cup of water…Still really, really cold, but in comparison, a little warmer?

I like Glaus and I don’t know stats like some of you guys, but I haven’t missed a game in about a month and besides some hits here and there (and admittingly many of them when game is already decided) he just looks really weak. My thought is that a platoon of Glaus and Lee could allow them to spell each other and perhaps allow both of them to perform at a strong level down the stretch.

Infante is awesome for what he is – a bench/utility guy.
As an everyday player, his numbers are kind of average – which isn’t a bad thing, but isn’t exactly Chipper-esque, which is who he would be replacing in this scenario.

the most important part, but not the only part. Fact of the matter is that infante has been as productive as we could have hoped for from chipper since he took over.
For Justin, hitting .340 in over 300 appearances just won’t cut it as anything more than a utility guy.

Why couldn’t you have blown your knee out in July?! That would’ve made trading much easier…
I kid, I kid, but the problem is that we lost Chipper at a time when are a bit handcuffed. As cavebird said, the options are limited.
You have to at least applaud the FO for trying to make a big move. I honestly felt that they were going to do nothing. You can’t argue that this isn’t better than no moves at all. Can you? Yes, Freeman COULD be good, but we just don’t know. I know that Lee is a solid 1B…And I know that Glaus needs to rest more than Bobby will rest him without another legit 1B on the team.
Also, I like this move better than a move for Figgins, Inge, or Ramirez (if those are other options). I just do. At a minimum, Infante has earned the benefit of the doubt and needs to be out there everyday.

Well...
Unlike a move for Figgins or Ramirez, it doesn’t handcuff us with regards to future salary/contract obligations. That’s definitely a good thing. It would be tough to bring him on with injury concerns, watch him stumble, and know he’d be around to potentially block Freeman next year, too.

Wow.
I love how no matter how well infante hits, he isn’t a good hitter. The guy has the hottest bat in our lineup for the past month. He’ll do fine defensively at second and he bats for a high average consistently. Prado will stay in the lineup at third. Losing chipper sucks, but we need a first baseman, not a 3rd baseman.

I said that he cannot replace Chipper – then again, 99% of baseball players can’t. That isn’t a slight to Infante at all.

I’d argue that he is a better replacement for Chipper than anything we’re going to get elsewhere. He isn’t going to hit the home runs like chipper, but he’ll play well enough defensively and he’ll hit for average. In fact, now that he is going to be an everyday hitter, he is a legitimate threat for the NL batting title, because he may get enough AB now. He’s hitting .341, current qualifiying NL leader is hitting .325. Hard to argue against those numbers, even if they take a hit playing everyday, which they haven’t so far.

Maybe, if you consider him only as a part time player. The last time he was an everyday regular (a two-year stretch in ’04 & ’05), he hit .245 over nearly 1000 PAs. To match that total in PT has taken him roughly the last four years.

I just don’t know…I really like Prado/Conrad/Infante at 3rd…But who knows what some solid time off could do? Maybe they experiment late in games (that are out of hand) to see what happens.

we all r know how streaky glaus is...
he sucked worse than this at the beginning of the season…he said himself that hitting comes in cycles…remember when he heated up last time? he iddnt just surge to the top, it took hitting that first homer and comming around… If glaus can get healthy, we have every reason to believe he can go on another 6 week tear

was that in April, he was hitting the ball, and hitting it hard. He’s not doing that now. He’s striking out more, and when he is making contact, it’s not with nearly the same solidity as it was in April. His BABIP (if i remember correctly) was pretty low in April…I doubt that’s still the case.

He is hitting the ball hard right now – maybe not as often as he did in April (He was one of the unluckiest hitters that month), but he is hitting it hard – several lined shots that have been caught, the HRs, the double, etc.
Now for the Ks, I don’t think he is striking out at a higher rate than normal. He has always been a high K% hitter. I don’t know the K% stats right now though, so maybe it is up just a bit, but I doubt it. His walks are down – which is highly unusual. I don’t know what is causing that – maybe he is pressing too much to get out of the slump?
Once he starts waiting on his pitch like he did earlier in the season, he will draw more walks and get more hits – theoretically.

His K rate this month is insanely bad
Like 7 or 8 percent higher than his season average. Maybe its random, but it certainly doesn’t look good.

it’s about trends towards career numbers. Glaus is by far the superior hitter over their careers, and his numbers lately are trending back towards those career numbers – he is hitting his career average with 7 hits in the past 10 games including 2 HRs. The one thing that is missing from his numbers over the past week and a half are the walks.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez, who sucks as a hitter for his career, has started to trend in the opposite direction with a line of .211 .256 .289 .545 over his past 10 games.
Granted, both are SSS, but if you look at this with rational eyes instead of ridiculous homeristic support for Gonzalez, you can see the writing on the wall.

just looked it up. he has 9 hits in 10 games. still pretty damn bad. also, he has 11 K’s in that time and 4 GIDP.
GIDP should be somewhat expected due to the piano that he carries around with him.
He has always struck out a lot too, so that isn’t a surprise.
The surprise is the lack of walks. That is the only piece of his game that is missing right now.

just about every part of his game is missing right now. His strikeouts, gidp, defense, and running are all really bad. There may be excuses for a lot of those things, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t happening.

But career numbers are questionable with Glaus...
..he is clearly on the downside of his career and has injury issues. Yes, overall, Glaus is a better career hitter than Gonzalez. Right now? Hard to say. Given the relative positional and defensive values, however, I would say Gonzalez is the better player, but a lot depends on whether Glaus is just slumping or whether his body just won’t let him play well anymore.
That’s the key. If people believe that on 30 June Glaus’ body just said “No more dude. You had a great ride and were one of the best hitters in baseball over the past 2 months, but that is it. This is the cliff and you have just walked over it.” then all the doubt makes sense.
If, however, you believe that Glaus still has a lot to offer over the next 2 months and just needs a break, then that makes sense too.
I am in the latter camp, obviously.

We don’t have that luxury for Glaus. I do believe he’s injured and his entire lower body seems to be hurting, thus sapping his power/timing. He is also probably trying to adjust by using his upper body more than normal which is actually slowing his bat down = k’s.
Dude’s body is trying to quit on him because he’s reached its breaking point. After a nice long rest though, he should play much better.

I highly doubt it will be to give Glaus rest a few days a week. Lee will be the everyday first baseman. If Glaus is kept around, he likely won’t see many more plate appearances.

This is a no-brainer, Glaus’s knees worry more than Lee’s back. I like the move, especially since we will have to give up little or nothing to get a guy who’s hitting over .300 since the break. This would be a great move

MLBTR reports that Lee “projects” to be a Type-B free agent at the end of the year, meaning if the Braves acquire him and offer him arbitration and he were to sign with another team, we would get a first round supplemental pick. MLBTR also says that Lee is owed $3.4 million between now and the end of the season.

I still like Glaus’s power bat off the bench as a RH pinch hitter. Glaus is really hurting physically and doesn’t seem like he can continue to produce at the plate while still having to field and run the bases.

Raf knew he wouldnt get that much money on the open market with the signing team also having to give up picks. He played everything perfect for himself and Tampa Bay. Only a team needing a closer would trade for a relief pitcher with his salary.

Big difference between Type A and Type B
Type A’s cost the signing team something, which means when you offer them arbitration, their free market value goes down. Not the same with Type B. Also, Soriano didn’t screw us—-we offered him arbitration to get the picks, but he accepted because our offer hurt his market value. We then moved him for Jesse Chavez and got rid of all of his salary. We tried to get something, but failed; the move didn’t hurt us (except for tempting Bobby to use Chavez, lol); we weren’t worse off than not offering him arbitration.
That would be my concern
Plus, with Lee’s advanced age there’s no real guarantee he’d get a much better deal in free agency.

..but if he is Class B, our offer won’t hurt his market value. Also, given his age, doing a year with arbitration might kill any chance of his getting a good multi-year deal again because he would be another year older before he hits the open market.
Based on what we've seen in the market recently for players of his type
He’d be lucky to get 13 million over 2 years on the free agent market. No way he turns down arbitration.
I guess my point is
that given his age and injury history he might not get a multi-year deal next year. I may depend on how he does these next few months but teams usually aren’t lining up to sign mid 30s injury prone 1st basemen coming off of down years.

Given that the Braves are a mid market team and may possibly be interested in keeping Freeman in the minors until May of next year to push back his arbitration time, I’m not seeing how having Lee coming here is going to lead to Freeman being called up in September. But I could be wrong.

Lee - Freeman
The thought of having Lee as the everyday first baseman and having Freeman ready to pinch hit against righties and give Lee rest days makes me feel pretty confident about first base for the first time in months.

Probably works well for Chicago
Lee is a very popular guy there.
Trading him to a WS contender in late August is a much easier move to make then telling him he’s too old and they don’t want him in anymore in December.
From the Braves standpoint, my only concern is money. It’s great if we have an extra $3.5 million to blow, but with the way Freeman has been raking as of late, I’m not so sure we don’t have just as good of a dirt-cheap option waiting for a Sept. callup.

The offense is built around him BECAUSE he is so good. He’s the most accurate QB in the league and his awareness makes the OL better.
No NFL coach is gonna build an offense around a QB throwing the ball 40 times if they arent able to do so.

every fan likes to think their team is getting slighted in some way and then they blow it out of proportion. This allows them to think they are underdogs and no one gives them any respect. It happens on every fanbase to some respect. (except Pirates fans, they understand they get an appropriate amount of coverage).
It’s the same thing with the whiny about ESPN not giving the Braves enough coverage. they don’t cover the braves enough, because the story isnt as important to a wide range of fans as the Brett Favre story is. brett Favre affects the entire NFC. he assures the Vikings a playoff spot, makes the NFC North interesting (a favre-less NFC North is basically a competition to see how many games the packers can win). Meanwhile the Braves play 162 games and if they make a trade for a 1B its not that big of a deal to the rest of baseball.
ANd finally, the reason they follow the Phils, Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox so much is because those are the largest baseball markets (not the largest tv markets, or biggest cities). ESPN is a business and to generate interest they lead with the stories that the largest amoutn of people watching will want to see. MLBN has different interests bc it knows only baseball fans are watching, whereas ESPN is covering all sports (or at least all the sports that they have an economic interest in). There’s no reason to complain about what ESPN does, it makes the most ifnancial sense for the company and thats what it is, a business.

ooo its definately frustrating…my list of favorite teams are never considered contenders and never given the credit they deserve…ESPN never covers WI Badgers football, or basketball….and they rarely cover the MLW Bucks but i understand that those markets are pretty regionally confined and its not ESPNs job to talk about them…

Some Atlanta beat writers have chimed in via Twitter with positive thoughts that this deal will get done, and Ken Rosenthal says that the deal “has legs.” We may simply have to wait a day or two for a clean bill of health on Derrek Lee’s bum back. Along those same lines, the Braves may not initially trade anyone to the Cubs for Lee, instead agreeing upon a player to be named later. This could be any of several players and would likely be based on how well Lee performs once in a Braves uniform. This would protect Atlanta from surrendering a good prospect in the event that Lee re-injures his back.

Any idea what they’d do with Glaus? Perhaps DL him since we’d have to clear a spot on the 25 man for him, and we can’t move Hernandez (our primary backup IF with Infante having to start). Between Hinske and Glaus, I’d think one would have to go to make room, and with Hinske able to play LF and Glaus able to go on the DL and rest his demolished legs until September when rosters are expanded, that seems to make the most since, especially with Lee filling his role as 1B and right handed slugger in the heart of the order.

since Lee essentially replaces him, and he can come back refreshed in September when rosters expand without forcing anyone down.
Go with for two weeks, until Glaus is back and can split time with Lee to keep both fresh (or if he is back moving well enough to play 3rd that allows for both in the lineup) but for two weeks go…

Yes, there’s that, and you know what? Small sample sizes can be very misleading. This isn’t exactly evidence that Derrek Lee is going to continue to out-perform Glaus going forward.
Unless you have a crystal ball...
that evidence is nonexistant and never will exist.
That shows that when healty, Lee still can crush it, and he just might be healthy right now (or a platoon with Glaus could allow both enough rest to be healthy).

but you cannot and should not place to much faith in future performance on past results… in particular with older players in baseball (natural decline). He has some major Q’s, in particular his back, which is a really finicky injury and difficult to mediate

It doesn’t seem exactly insightful to take on $3.5 million in salary just so you can get a guy a DL stint. It’s not very good money management. For the first half of the season, Troy Glaus was by FAR outperforming Lee. Over the past 30ish games, several of which Lee has missed to injury, Lee has been better. We might end up with two injured first basemen who can’t succeed, and neither of them hitting well when healthy.
This deal doesn’t make as much sense as everyone seems to believe.
You're describing a worst case scenario if both are injured...
if both are healthy come Septembr and October, this team becomes much stronger (even more so if “healthy” means Glaus can make some starts at 3B).

by the time a deal could be worked out, all the kinks ironed out and Lee making his way down South, there would only be a short window of games where we have to worry about health issues and roster spots.
Rosters can expand to 40 on Sept 1, so we could have five banged up first basemen sitting in the dugout and it wouldn’t really matter.
It’s a trickier situation when you can only carry 25 guys on the roster.

Lee is obviously the better defender
But that’s probably no more than 5 runs over the remaining course of the season. First base defense is not the easiest thing to valuate, anyway.
Look at how the Braves have lost 5 or 6 games since the All Star Break and also win games late. 5 runs could easily mean 1 or 2 games which may be exactly what it takes to win this division.

I mean, over the season’s first month and a half, Derrek Lee hit .210/.331/.328. He’s obviously capable of struggling from here out, and he’s currently missing time with a bulging disk. Troy Glaus is as safe a bet as Derrek Lee to have solid results over the season’s final month and a half.

Glaus/Lee platoon- gives each other days off to stay relatively strong = awesome production from first for the rest of the season.
A platoon doesn’t have to include both a lefty and a righty. This platoon would be a platoon to keep two old guys healthy and fresh.

So I don’t see why everyone is so excited about this trade. Lee isn’t clearly a better hitter than Troy Glaus over the course of this year, and over the course of their careers, he’s really only slightly better. Over the next month and a half, I’m going to call it a coinflip as to which guy would produce better numbers.
Because if we can get one, let alone both...
healthy for September and October, that gives us a much improved lineup. I agree, that Glaus MAY perform as good or bad as Lee from here on out, but I’d like our chances with both around of having at least one healthy and able to provide RH power in the 4 or 5 spot of the order.

if the total number of tickets stays constant. Having two tickets with 50/50 chances of winning doesn’t improve your chances of winning. Your chances are still 50%.
Basically, I’m saying that having two guys (who are substitutes for one another) who might do well doesn’t give you better chances than having just one guy who might do well. They act indepently of each other.

If you keep Glaus, then (a) he stinks or (b) he doesn’t. That’s a 50% chace of success.
If you ADD Lee, then (a) Glaus and Lee both stink; (b) Glaus and Lee both get hot or (c ) either Glaus or Lee get hot*…
In the above scenario, you have a 75% chance of at least one 1B becoming hot…Thus improving your odds by 25%, as we only need 1 ticket to win…
*This assumes that both guys get playing time on the Braves…

The fundamentals are bad in the same places, namely, they're hurting in places that don't get better at their age
However, the good for Lee is a tad better than Glaus (Lee has more consistent power at this point in his career). However, both of them would perform better in a platoon than one of them on their own, IMO.

I like the move. I like it as long as Lee is healthy right now. I also believe this move shows what the FO is looking forward too. This moves allows us to put Glaus on the DL to get some rest and get healthy. Maybe Glaus can play 3rd, maybe not. But it also shows that we are not just trying to get to a WS, but to win a championship. If we can have a healthy Lee at 1B and a healthy Glaus as a DH, it extends and deepens are lineup to go against the likes of the Yankees and Rays.
I would still only use Glaus as a DH as an absolute last resort. Because, more than likely, he strikes out swinging.

I really don't want to wade into the discussion above,
which I’m sure is a furious “justin vs. everyone” debate that has probably morphed into why he thinks we never should have traded Yunel for Gonzalez.
But… I think I like this deal. Now we only need one of Lee/Glaus to be healthy and performing. No guarantee that either will, but this seems like a very low-risk, potentially high-reward move. Which is my favorite kind.

Seems like all of our trades so far have been of that variety. In fact, most of our signing in the offseason were like that, too. I like the idea of getting Lee. He’s been solid for the last couple of months, and very hot since the break. Plus, I think getting Glaus some regular rest could be huge.

Become a Glaus v. Lee chain? We don’t lose Glaus; we gain Lee. Who cares who’s better as they would both be on our team. Having both would allow our team to keep the 1B spot healthy and give us the ability to ride the hot hand.
Is there anyone who thinks that this is a BAD move? If so, why? How is potentially adding a guy like Lee hurting our team? Because we lose 3+ million?

My idea of “flexibilty” in this context was directed toward pitcher arm matchups. Otherwise, I think Bobby has lots of choices for outfield (at least 6), plus (would be) 3 first basemen, 3 third basemen, 2 shortstops, and 3 second basemen.

I think it’s a bad move to unsuccessfully go after Lee. I think it’s a great move to successfully go after Lee if you know Glaus can handle 3B defensively.
Not sure how I feel about acquiring Lee and sitting Glaus.
If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.
Because at this point, they can't both occupy a spot in the lineup.

I expect him to encounter some more struggles. He’s very raw in many ways.
Axford is a rookie, but this isn’t a year when you’ll see a relief pitcher win. There are too many other strong players.
Just saying Axford has a good case...
I’d agree he isn’t likely with others around, lots of others. And I’d guess Garcia is the front runner unless Heyward, Posey, Stanton, Strasburg, or another can have a strong finish, especially if he gets to 15 wins.

But as said above...
if we gave him two weeks on the DL to rest and rehab, how much better could he move? It’s not like he has a significant injury to his legs, just a lot of wear and tear and tired bones. Not saying a DL stint would allow him that much movement to play 3rd and make the quick reactions and charging plays that need to be made there, but it’s possible. Especially if you think he’d be a 6 inning player at 3rd, and subbed for by a pinch runner or defensive replacement in Infante or Conrad, could be given 1-2 days off per week to stay fresh, etc.

It’s no guarantee, but I’d say it’s fairly likely.

is a damn strong top 5, and Infante doesn’t have to be removed. He could play CF over Melky and Ankiel, LF over Diaz or Hinske, or 3B when Lee or Glaus need a rest (or also in later innings as a pinch runner/defensive sub once Glaus hits in the 6th or 7th).

eyeball perception would lead me to say the same thing, but I’ve never seen Troy or any medical people say that, and if he was able to get his legs back healthier in a signficant amount, he may well be able too. He’s played there before, as recently as last year (meaning after his shoulder surgery).

Folowing Chipper going down, Wren said Glaus was not an option because of his lack of mobility. With rest, who knows. But Glaus was really slow in Spring Training too.

we might be able to do that. I think the DL is a very good option for Troy.

He doesn’t need rest, he needs a time machine…..those knees are history after a career of playing 3rd, and there’s a reason he is at 1st.
Glaus is about to become the 1st-base version of pre-chipper-injury-Infante — come in when he’s needed and hopefully produce since he’s not having to work every day.

Glaus would DH vs. LHP during World Series
A lineup with Glaus DH’ing and Lee at 1B is much better than Diaz DH’ing, Melky in LF, and Glaus at 1B. Basically subbing Lee for Melky if it got that far, a big improvement against the likes of Sabathia, Pettitte, Price, Lee, or Wilson.

Now that I think about it, it would probably be subbing Lee for Ankiel, since Melky would probably play center against lefties in the playoffs. That’s an even bigger move in that case.

I like Prado anywhere, tbh.
Heyward’s been batting second for so long, I’ve come around. He gets on base, he’s got decent speed. He’s doing his job at that spot in the lineup, so there’s just not much need to fiddle with it.
I’m also more comfortable with Lee driving in runs than Glaus. Dunno why, could be that the grass is simply greener on the other side of the fence. I love the prospect of Lee/McCann at the 4-5 spots with Diaz/Hinske hitting sixth (mostly Diaz).

That is VERY surprising to me. That may be better (though I’m not 100% convinced it would be). I am not a big LaRoche fan, but he certainly did well for us last year. Plus, he’s a lefty, so a Glaus/LaRoche platoon would be easy to implement.

The rest don't really work either...
a means they liked him as a player and wer interested in obtaining his services, and his production this year wouldn’t likely change that.
c isn’t a bluff, it’s adding the piece that makes your team better If available, Lee and LaRoche both > Guillen imo.
and d doesn’t mean much because it’s not like Guillen is better defensively than Huff, and he’s been in RF for them most of the year.
Actually, Guillen is better defensively than Huff.
You guys are over-thinking this. The Giants really needed Huff’s bat in the lineup, but didn’t want both him and Burrell (who, like Huff, is not a good OF) in the corner OF spots. And, they had Ishikawa at 1B who was a sucking vortex offensively, so the simple solution was to add a decent corner OF (Guillen) and shift Huff to 1B. Adding Lee or LaRoche would improve them at 1B offensively (although probably not defensively—Ishikawa seems pretty good) but wold keep their train wreck of a defensive OF.

LaRoche hadn’t cleared waivers when they got Guillen. Since Guillen’s played three games and the waiver time is 48 hours, one could reasonably suspect he wasn’t even on waivers yet. The Giants are also an in-division squad, making the D-Backs somewhat less likely to deal with them.
Lee had just rejected the Angels. Who’s to say that the Giants felt there was no chance he’d accept a trade?? I’m willing to bet the Braves didn’t find out until they inquired on Aramis Ramirez, probably on a counter-offer from the Cubs. Then you factor in that the Giants are fighting for the wild card while the Braves are leading the division (and thus provide a better opportunity for Lee to reach the postseason), and it makes them claiming Lee a reach, at best.

And to be honest, I'd agree with that assessment...
a quality RF would be better for them than a quality 1B, for the reasons you mentioned on Huff and Burrell. We disagree in thinking Guillen is better defensively than Huff, as I’m under the impression he’s just as bad (without knowing the UZR, +/- or what have you of them), but I’d agree that adding a quality RF (or 3B since Sandoval could flip to 1B) would have helped more than a guy like Lee or LaRoche. But then, I doubt Guillen as that “quality RF”.
Guillen’s probably deteriorated somewhat, but Sabean operates on 3-year old scouting reports, so they probably think he’s the cat’s meow.
Jose does still have an insane arm.

I would love this. I really would. He’s killing it since the ASB, plays very good defense, and it lets us keep Freeman in AAA without starting his clock early. I really like Troy, but it just isn’t working out. With the exception of two or three ABs, he’s looked awful in the last few weeks. We just can’t have that AND his awful defense at 1st. And a lineup like this:

So, it’s the pro-rated $4.5M, with the $1.5M buyout. Makes the chunk of change that we’d pay more. Just using math (dunno when or how often the contract gets paid…), it looks like $1.25M left. So he’d cost us $2.75M for the season.

I never said he could play like Zimmerman at the hot corner. I said that 1B requires more movement than 3B, and according to Chipper is much more abusive of legs. And the first part is absolutely true, that 1B requires more movement, at least more frequent movement, than 3B. 1B also has a huge emphasis on reactions (to bad throws, quick plays, short hops, etc) nd quick efficient movements, so it’s not like you’re giving a valid reason at the end there to differentiate 1B from 3B.

but please tell me how 3B requires more movement than 3B (both cover the IF corner, and one is involved in a much larger amount of plays), how 1B doesn’ require good reactions and quick, efficient movements, or how the footwork involved with 1B is less detailed, less intricate, and less likely to cause leg pain than 3B.
I couldn't see Glaus making a lot of the plays at third.
I don’t think he could make any sort of throw charging in on a bunt. I also don’t think he could make any throw across the diamond after having to hit the deck to stop a ball on the line. At first, he’s not expected to hit the deck that often. He does have to get back to the bag on balls in the infield, but he’s rarely fielding a screamer at him and he’s certainly not expected to stop them. At third, that’s what’s asked of you. I’m not saying he couldn’t play the position at all, but I don’t want to see him there. He looks miles slower now than he did when he played in the hot corner.

To reiterate, I never said he could play 3B, only that maybe with healthier legs after spending some time on the DL. And I certainly never said he’d play it as well as Ryan Zimmerman, or even Chipper (who has spoiled us on hat charging play since he does it as well as anyone over his career).
He's not expected to handle them at first
with anywhere near the consistency expected of him at third. It’s nice if he stops shots down the RF line, but it’s not expected (in my opinion). He has to cover first to prevent the runner from rounding without any risk of a throw behind him. He can’t do that if he’s flopping around on the ground like a humpback whale after trying to stop a shot down the line.
I know you didn’t say he’d play it well…I never said you did. I’m saying that I don’t think he’d play it well enough to even be serviceable.

Longer throws require more use of the lower body. No flipping the back to the pitcher on pick off attempts. Perhaps I misspoke. What I mean is the plays made at third are more demanding on the lower body than 1B. Charging slow rollers and throwing on the run off-balance, cutting balls off in the hole and throwing across the infield. these plays require lots of mobility and low body strength that Glaus does not have. Plays down the line where you have to push off of your back leg to make the quick throw. As a former 3B I see the position as more demanding physically. I can’t envision Troy ranging for a ball in the hole then having to quickly get bag to the bag in the event of runners advancing.

and obviously our Hall of Famer at 3B dsagrees with some of what you said, and has said so on multiple occasions. That being this line specifically where Chipper disagrees…

Chipper has said exactly the opposite when discussing any potential move to 1B.
Regardless of the Chipper hypothesis...
Glaus’s mobility is much worse than Chipper’s. 1B by nature has a much smaller amount of ground to cover, as the defender is always needed closer to the bag.
While third is also an anchor position, the amount of ground covered is generally larger because they’re not needed to cover third on a routine ball-in-play. It’s only when runners are on or there’s an XBH that third needs to be covered in a conventional sense.

But the movements are different in that...
3B seems more natural and 1B is more intrcate footwork. So I believe the Chipper theory that 3B is easier on the lower body than 1B. That said, I definitely agree that Chipper’s mobility was significantly better than Glaus (prior to his knee injury, and hell maybe still is).
Stretching
Is also an issue, and Chipper was prone to minor strains. Bear in mind, it’s not just the legs with stretching at first, it’s all those different range of motions, upper and lower body, that a first baseman has to make to collect the ball on a throw. I believe Chipper’s strained everything from his obliques to his hammies during his career.
Agreed on the footwork part, it’s a big reason I played third instead of first throughout my playing days (which, admittedly, ended before college). My mobility wasn’t great, but reflexes still play a huge role. At a lower level, the mobility was less important…not the case when you reach advanced levels of competition.

Lee: batting .308, 5 HR, 15 RBI in 78 ABs (which sounds light – reason for that may be below).
On the season, 475 PA’s; 418 AB. 16 HR. This year he’s walking 11% of the time and K’ing 24%. .335 OBP. 16 GIDP is worrisome with 101 K’s and 52 walks.
Report on XM/MLB channel is that Lee has a bulging disk in his lower back and received an epidural injection to relieve this. Will not play again before Thursday.

Glaus on the DL, he knows he is hurting, we all know he is hurting. What would it hurt to have him rest for a few weeks and as was said above, when Rosters expand in September he comes back to the team
Then he is rested, can platoon a bit with Lee and we dont lose a roster player

I like the deal. We don’t give up a ton, and Glaus gets an opportunity for a break. I agree with Justin. He’s not been nearly as bad as some folks are making out, and I think rest will do him some good.

I'm willing to bet FW is pissed this got leaked
he likes to keep all talks private in case they don’t go through. He has to be upset about this. Cubs leaked the story because the Chicago Tribune reported it first but it’ll be real funny if it doesn’t go through now. Cause this severely pisses off Glaus. Hopefully we cut Glaus cause we have no use for him. At least DL him temporarily and see if his legs can come back. He can’t even make it down the first base line right nwo

A small point of caution
I just looked up Lee’s career numbers at Turner Field and they ain’t that pretty:
66 games, .237 BA, .725 OPS.
That’s a relatively small sample size, but it does deserve mention that he has hit worse at Turner Field than he has at any other MLB stadium where he has played at least 10 games.
Then again...
He won’t be facing our pitchers or hitting his liners at Andruw here. That should make things much easier.

I will note...
That Lee is actually right on the cusp of being a Type A, and one of the players in front of him is Willingham, who is done for the year. A decent home stretch from him could net us a 1st-rounder with rejected arbitration.
