I never really liked oldies, and most of the “rock” music today is trash. There are a few good bands, but most of it anymore is either screaming into the mic or skinny little dudes with high pitched voices.

by BullManUGA on Aug 15, 2010 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s when the context comes into play. You can’t look at BABIP in and of itself and say “oh, this guy is getting unlucky, because his BABIP is lower than the league average”.

You have to look at the player’s unique BABIP, then what he is doing, and make a determination.

Great example is Troy Glaus in April. Dude was crushing the ball – right at people. His BABIP was about 100 points lower than his career average. His May was no surprise to those who believed in that statistic.

ANY stat alone is stupid (or darn near)

BABIP is a great evaluative tool when you know how to use it- i.e. looking at it in a package of stats that includes things like line drive percentage, ground ball percentage, even strikeout numbers, even though K numbers seem to have nothing to do with it at first glance. For example, when Troy Glaus had an awful April, a smart person could divine that he was exceptionally unlucky due to a career-low BABIP despite the fact his LD% was where it should be, indicating that there was a good chance that in the future more of those LDs would fall in and his numbers would rebound. Looking at Nate McLouth, however, even though his BABIP was equally putrid, you would not conclude he was due for a rebound because his LD% was equally bad, and his astronomical GB rate and sky high K rate tell you that not only is he swinging at a ton of bad balls, but that even when he makes contact it tends to be of the weak variety. All those weak grounders don’t scream “comeback waiting to happen.” So you have to know how to appropriately apply BABIP to know the difference in Troy’s bad luck and McLouth’s skill decline.

So, hypothetically speaking, say someone gets an RBI groundout to make the score 1-0 in the 3rd inning…then, in the 8th or 9th inning, someone hits a grand slam – the person who had the earlier groundout has a higher WPA?

It depends on what the score is at that time. If it is still 1-0 or 1-1 then the GS will be the higher play. If it is 10-0 then it won’t be as big.

Well it depends what the score is when the grand slam is it. If he added 4 runs to an already 7 run lead or something like that, then yes, the groundout has a higher WPA.

not with a 9 run lead he wouldn’t

you learn a few things in 20 years of pro ball – like take the easy outs with a big lead, and don’t let a costly error give a team the big inning they need to get their juices flowing.

I have the Android, and the default browser works just fine.

Just don’t install any of that “anti-virus” crap they have out there. You don’t need it, and it just clogs your phone up.
