Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/15

Matt Weaver is hitting .519 during his current 7 game hitting streak.

Gwinnett 4, Durham1

  • M. Young 1-3, 2B, BB, SB (24), E (4), .291 AVG
  • F. Freeman 1-4, .311 AVG
  • B. Canizares 2-3, BB, .333 AVG
  • J. Thurston 2-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, .250 AVG
  • L. Bolivar 2-4, E (7), .233 AVG
  • W. Ramirez 2-4, .208 AVG
  • J. Ortegano 5 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 2 K, 5.96 ERA
  • C Gearrin 2 IP, 0 R, 1 , 1 BB, 2 K, W (2), 3.65 ERA
  • E. O'Flaherty 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K, 0.00 ERA
  • C. Kimbrel 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K, SV (19), 1.53 ERA
  • Since the start of July, Jose Ortegano had a in 8.21 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP in 30.2 innings, but he allowed just 1 over 5 innings tonight. The bullpen was great, with Cory Gearrin picking up the win with 2 scoreless and Eric O'Flaherty and Craig Kimbrel each throwing perfect innings. Gearrin has been on a roll since the All-Star break, with a 1.80 ERA and a 1.05 ERA in 20 innings over 11 appearances. Barbaro Canizares extended his hitting streak to 7 games, while Freddie Freeman extended his to 4. He had 2 hits tonight, but since joining Gwinnett Wilkin Ramirez has hit just .179 with a .615 OPS in 39 at bats.

    Mississippi 1, Montgomery 7

  • M. Daniel 2-4, .271 AVG
  • J. Sucre 2-4, .303 AVG
  • Y. Gomez 2-4, .339 AVG
  • R. Delgado 7 IP, 5 ER, 5 H, 4 BB, 5 K, 6.48 ERA
  • Randall Delgado continues to struggle at AA, giving up 5 earned over 7 innings. The walks have been killing him, as he's averaging 5.8 every 9 innings, more than double the 2.4 he was averaging for Myrtle Beach. Mike Daniel has been on a roll since the All-Star break, with a .318 average and a .802 OPS and 5 steals in 66 at bats. Yasser Gomez collects a pair of hits, extending his hitting streak to 6 games. In 41 August at bats he's hit .366 with a .849 OPS. He's excelled with runners on, hitting .462 with a 1.024 OPS in those situations. After missing 6 days with the complications stemming from his wrist injury, Jordan Schafer has been back in centerfield every day, but he's continued to struggle, going 3-25 in his last 7 games.

    Myrtle Beach 5, Potomac 7, 10 innings

  • C. Miles 2-4, 2B, .249 AVG
  • G. Rodriguez 2-5, 2B, HR (10), 3 RBI, .251 AVG
  • C. Johnson 1-4, RBI, 0 K, .294 AVG
  • L. Sumoza 3-5, 2B, 3B, .232 AVG
  • M. Crim 5.1 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 4.87 ERA
  • Matt Crim had what's become a typical start for him, average, not bad, not great, just average. The Pelicans lost on a 2 run homer in the bottom of the tenth to P-Nats shortstop Jose Lozado, but they did manage to keep rehabbing National Nyjer Morgan hitless in 3 at bats. Of course, he's not very good, so maybe that's not a huge accomplishment. Gerry Rodriguez homered, extending his hitting streak to 6 games, going 10-25 in that span. Luis Sumoza has been hot, with a .321 average and 1.044 OPS in his last 10 games. 2008 fourth round pick Braeden Schlehuber has just been bad for the pelicans, with a 1.50 average and .465 OPS in 60 at bats.

    Rome 2, Augusta 4

  • M. Weaver 3-4, .258 AVG
  • J. Leonard 2-4, RBI, .262 AVG
  • R. Hefflinger 1-2 HR (5), RBI, .252 AVG
  • C. Masters 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 3.57 ERA
  • I'd love to know what adjustments Matt Weaver has made, because he's not only turning his season around, but also his career. He extended his hitting streak to 7 games, going 14-27 with 4 doubles and 4 RBI in that span. Robby Hefflinger played for the first time since July 4th, hitting his 5th homer of the season. Chris Masters had his best start in a month, fanning 6 over 6 innings. He's struck out 15 in 11 innings in his last 2 starts.

    Danville 4, Burlington 5

  • E. Reyes 2-3, 2B, HR (5), 2 RBI, .293 AVG
  • J. Frierson 2-4, SB (2), CS (2), .286 AVG
  • Ke. Fleming 2-3, 2B, RBI, .211 AVG
  • K. Farrell 5.1 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 0 BB, 4 K, 4.82 ERA
  • B. Sims 4.2 IP, 1 ER, 8 H, 0 BB, 3 K, 1.74 ERA
  • Kenny Fleming hasn't done much this year, with a .211 average and a .540 OPS in 128 at bats, but he's working on a 4 game hitting streak where he's gone 7-16 with a double and 2 RBI. Elmer Reys has been great all year, but in his last 10 he's been on fire, with a .378 average, a 1.196 OPS, 3 home runs, and 7 RBI in 37 at bats.

I can't wait for rosters to expand!

Freeman and Canizares could help out tremendously, and Marek and Kimbrel could give our regular bullpen arms some nice rest!

We won't add both Freeman and Canizares...

for a better idea of who would be likely to come up when rosters expand, google the Braves 40 man roster. It’ll come from just those names (plus any others we add to the 40 man roster).

    lets see

    Wrist gets injured

Wrist gets injured more for playing through it for 2 months

Player can’t play baseball for an entire year

Player is instantly started out in the upper minors

Player struggles because player’s wrist will not be back at full strength till at least next year.

Full strength in his wrist means that some hits that would be line drives over peoples heads for singles are now soft infield line outs. Gappers in the outfield are now routine pop ups.

The wrist is a very important part of a persons swing.

We prob wont see Schafer till next September

You know, I really do like Jordan and he seems like a good guy, but he’s a total idiot. He did this to himself, and now he has to live with it. I really wish he would’ve just taken the time to let his wrist heal properly. I can only imagine what those vicious uppercut swings he took in May 2009 did structurally to his wrist.

Everyone tries to play through injuries. It isn’t idiocracy, it’s competitiveness.

But for two months when he’s playing horribly? Stupid.

I’ve been calling him a bust since he made the Braves last year. I remain amazed that anyone can look at his minor league stats and expect him to be a star player. He’s basically Francoeur with a little less power and somewhat more walks. But for some reason Schafer never runs out of apologists who are sure that “real soon now” he’s going to be the star they expect him to be.

People, it’s just not that a big of a loss if he never plays in the majors again. He’s basically Francoeur all over again. Do we really need a repeat of that?

by Zontar on Aug 16, 2010 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

He is Francoeur, except he knows the strike zone, is good on D, can steal bases, and hit for average with a little bit of power. Other than those differences, they are just alike.

    Yasser Gomez?

Anyone see him play in Mississippi?

He was the #3 batter for the Cuban equivalent to the Yankees – he hit .394 in 2007. His stats here look good too, given the small sample size.

    i forgot about him

he was Yunel’s friend or something. He seems to have absolutely no power though

    Power

Honestly I could care less about his power in CF(if he can still play there) if he can single, double and BB teams to death plus play great defense that’ll be fine with me. I’m tired of seeing free swinging no OB guys like Ankiel and McLouth.

    THIS

Hell I’d take Matty Young or Geb, just because I know they’re not going to make a ton of outs.

.450 OBP, speed and CF defense

…could be worth a look. Particularly if the alternative is Ankiel?

by eglenn on Aug 16, 2010 1:57 AM EDT reply actions

He usually plays LF and I’ve heard he has bad knees. Other than that I haven’t heard anything about his defense, though he doesn’t appear to have any speed (0/1 SB). His OBP is ridiculous so far but it’s hard to imagine that a guy who can’t hit anything but singles is going to walk like 15% of the time in the major leagues.

    Schafer / Gomez

Schafer has been playing mostly LF and hitting 7th since he’s been in AA – Definitely not a good sign. CF has been manned by Antoan Richardson; Yasser Gomez has alternated between those 2. Each of the 3 are getting about equal at bats (from what I can tell) of the total of the 2 positions. It was a mess when Cody Johnson was still there.

Gondee did a great job keeping up with the signees, all can be found on the right hand side of the homepage beneath the Fanshots.

I'm starting to get very intrigued by Elmer Reyes

what type of prospect do we have in that one, cause he’s done well this year.

by Mr. Sanchez on Aug 16, 2010 7:54 AM EDT reply actions

    +1

He’s doing very well and has far more pop than I expected from him. I know he’s fast but if he can continue hitting with power he may jump into my Top 30 next season. Great season from him and he’s only 19.

    Kevin Goldstein tweeted yesterday

That he thinks the Braves WILL sign one of Sabol/Alvord. I don’t think so but that would be HUGE if they could!

Is there anyway to incorporate Freeman and Glaus in a lineup?

And then use Freeman to give Glaus a few breaks intermittantly in various games?

by fizzbot on Aug 16, 2010 9:35 AM EDT reply actions

I think a Septmber 1st call-up will be ideal. The Braves need a middle infielder/ 3B right now, so, we need to wait. Also, there will be less pressure on Freeman to produce if he is not replacing someone in the lineup. He can then spell Glaus at first, while getting his playing time in now.

    Yuck

Hadn’t seen McLouth in any of the recaps lately, so I did some sleuthing on my own. Last 10 games:

4 for 33 with 6 BB 9K. 121/269/121/390. That’s a 390 OPS. Ouch. Even if you add in all his stats since going down to AAA he still blows. I hope he can turn things around — what a fall! Otherwise, he’s going to be a $7M sinkhole next year.

Everyone knows Rick Ankiel sucks and should be out of baseball, but at least he showed some nice arm in the game yesterday. Guaranteed that Nate doesn’t even make a throw to 3rd on that play.

    Jordan Schafer

Does anyone know if the 1 year deal that JS signed this year included that he would still stay on the 40 man? I ask because it looks like he is not going to be really ready for another shot at the bigs until after the 2011 season

by FreddieFreemanTime on Aug 16, 2010 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

His 1 year contract just covered his salary for this year. He’s still on the Braves 40 man roster and they own his rights. They have 2 more seasons that they can keep him on the 40 man and option him back to the Minors at any point. That means that by 2013 he has to stay in the Majors or they risk losing him through waivers.
