Okay guys, this is going up because I don't really want to see 8 Chipper-related FanPosts on the front page for the next week. If you have ideas on who should replace Chipper, your ideal new lineup, etc. please post it here. And if you do make a FP and it gets erased and put in here, you know why.

-Also, please rec this so it stays at the top. It's for my sanity and yours. Thank you.

You think Chone would provide the best option to replace Chipper….He would add another element the Braves don’t have….Slide Prado down to the 2. spot, and J-Hey to the three, could it work? whats the best move made or possibly unmade for this costly injury…..opinions, please let me know all thought and opinions If you are Frank Wren what do you do? inner or outer………trying to fullfill the 75 limmit so reiterating myself lol ….

Chunk's deleted fanpost:

Why not move Glaus to third he has played there his entire life. Freeman is swinging a hot bat in AAA and is a true 1Bman. The Braves are playing a ton of games at home in August this will create buzz and maybe even give JHEY a good friend to feed off of. If after a couple of weeks it dont work its Sept. and you can expand your bench and hope for the best. The more days you play bench guys as starters the more they get exposed and the league catches up to them. Thats my rant and take anyway.

Okay – this is no fun. But what are we supposed to do? We have two allstar infielders, neither of whom is named Chipper Jones.

3B – Prado

2B – Infante

OR – we could make a drastic move by putting Glaus back at 3rd, shift Prado over to first, keep Infante at 2nd OR move Infante to 3rd, Prado stays at 2nd. OR we could do what i originally suggested and bring Freddie Freeman up OR any of the above (and we’re leaving Hinske out of the mix).

Let’s not worry quite yet. We can still take this down with or without Chipper.

Move Prado to third. Bring Matt Young up and have him split time with Infante at second.

Are we too short of veteran presence?

Is this a tangible, possible thing (i’m not sure, personally)? Do we need another heavy bat- possibly one that would require a difficult trade with legitimate prospects involved (maybe not even now, maybe this offseason)? Does this in any way dilute or divert your crush on Werth?

I was thinking the same thing. Heyward seems to thrive under pressure (i.e. his first at bat, his numerous late inning game-tying or winning hits, and I would even include his latest home run because it was his birthday and everyone had been talking about his homerless streak). I think moving him to the third spot, with two great on-base guys in front of him, is going to make him step up and take the team on his shoulders. And, with Chipper still on the bench to help him, I think he will be able to handle it.

My predition

Chone Figgins. No reason. Not even opining as to if this is good or bad (it depends on the deal for me). It’s merely a prediction.

That is all.

As for Chipper, he is irreplaceable. In fact, if it were up to me, I would just remove third base altogether and just play with 1st, 2nd and home. This would allow the Braves to never have to have another 3rd baseman and would have the added benefit of helping us drive in more runs with singles!

Not a big contract, fairly versatile player having a decent season. With us riding so far back in the waiver pack, I don’t see him making it that far back. His remaining salary is probably < 1MM, small enough for another contender to absorb.

Has anyone else paid attention to Kelly’s home-road splits? His OPS is just above 1.000 at home, just above .700 on the road…

That huge of a difference? As of today, we’re talking 70 points on his average, 79 points on his OBP (which means he’s not walking much more at home), 197 points on his slugging (!!!), and .276 points of his OPS. These aren’t insignificant differences. We’re talking huge numbers. On the road he’s slugging right at .400, and in Arizona’s banbox that’s nearly up to .600. On the road he’s the player we all think he is, a slightly above average player, at home he’s just getting a huge boost from that joke of a ballpark.

His career splits are about the same.

A guy just doesn’t become a H/R hitter in 1 season.

KJ has 7 HR on the road and 11 at home – not that big of a deal.

No, his career splits are not about the same. in 1169 plate appearances at home he has a .273/.362/.455/.817 line, compared to .263/.341/.433/.774 in 1229 plate appearances on the road. That’s a 10 point difference in average (much much less than the 70 points this year), 19 points in OBP (much much less than the 79 points this year), 22 points in SLG (a ridiculous amount less than the 197 points this year) and 43 points in OPS (again, a ridiculous amount less than the 276 points this year). The numbers aren’t even close to his career averages and it’s hard to find stats to support that he isn’t getting a huge boost by Arizona’s ballpark.

That’s not what I was saying. I was saying that for his career, his H/R splits are not dramatically different from each other.

Sure, he is benefitting from Arizona – just like anyone who plays there, but a park doesn’t typically affect OBP as much as power.

KJ’s hit 7 HR away and 11 at home. The big difference is in his doubles totals.

Can that be entirely contributed to the home park? He is driving the ball

I haven’t looked it up yet, but what is his BABIP split this season?

This guy wants to suck all the cubs dick can he not have an unbias some what partition reguards
by RWH2 on Apr 5, 2010 10:20 AM CDT

by justincredubil02 on Aug 16, 2010 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

His home BABIP is .361, his road .BABIP is .303. For his career his home BABIP is .313, his road BABIP is .318. I’m not an expert with this stat, but I think that reaffirms that Arizona is helping him out immensely.

And you say his OBP wouldn’t be affected by the home park, but it’s 79 points higher at home. The difference in batting average is 70 points, so I guess really he’s only getting on 9 points higher at home. But still, the hits are dropping at home and not on the road. And have been for the whole season. This isn’t a trend he’s had through his career, and one that likely wouldn’t continue if he left Arizona.

If the Rockies slide...

Melvin Mora for utility role??

He can start everywhere but SS in the infield, he’s putting up decent numbers in the UT role for the Rockies this season, he’s affordable. Career numbers match his season numbers. Might get claimed before us, might not. OLD, but another veteran presence.

Not flashy at all, but serviceable in a utility role. Prado and Infante can handle starting duties.

I don’t understand why comments like these are an everyday thing. Venters used to be a starter, so he has pitched a lot more innings in a year than he is going to this year. Not to mention, once EOF gets back, Venters will go back to getting regular days off. His arm will be fine.

Comments like this

fail to recognize that there is a difference between starting and relieving. Starters don’t go out and pitch all out every single day. They are very regimented. Relievers have to be ready to go out on any day, so their workouts between appearances is different. Either way, riding relievers like Cox does with Venters isn’t good for any arm. Just because he was a starter doesn’t make his arm invincible.

At first I wanted Aramis Rameriz, but I soon found out that his option next year is a players option and is worth 14.5 million that he will likely pick up. Then, Figgins sounded like a good idea. There was some rumors going around at the trade deadline about the Mariners and Braves talking about Figgins, so the idea sounded even better. I knew he had a big contract, but I found out that he is 32. He has been a good player the past few years, but his game relies on speed and it will be difficult for him to regain his form and keep his production from dropping. So, as a right now I would like to get Wigginton. He could play 2B and Prado would slide over to 3B. If the Mariners, eat some salary then I wouldn’t mind Figgins but I don’t see that happening.

but I wonder if Alex Rodriguez will be placed on waivers, and if so, if anyone will claim him. The Yankees almost certainly wouldn’t let him go in any scenario, but I’m just curious.

Again, I don’t think it would be worth it to claim him long-term (he’d sure help us this year, though), but with that contract, he almost has to make it through waivers, right? Just thought I’d mention this here, since it’s about a third baseman and I’ve been wondering about it.

Figgins would be nice, but he would have to clear waivers, and we don’t really have the money for him, and he isn’t worth giving up anything good for. Ditto for Wigginton and Uggla.

Whats wrong with Wes Timmons?

No one seems to be talking about him. He’s sportin a .400 OBP in the last 2 seasons. He could be like Conrad. Stuck with a career in the minors, so when he gets the chance, maybe he takes advantage. An OBP like that, even if it doesnt completely transfer (OBP of .360 wouldnt be too shabby down the stretch), plus he has stolen 19 bags this year so he has a little giddyup. If we are looking for a leadoff hitter and someone to step in without depleting the minor league system or really spending any money, this guy could be it. And if we dont use him as the leadoff as im sure we wouldnt just throw him in there, especially with prado well solidified in that role, imagine him as just a #8 hitter. Turns the lineup over, not exactly the prototypical good defensive black hole #8 spot. He would effectively clear the pitcher most of the time, getting the top of the lineup leading off innings more often than melky, ankiel, or douche towel alex gonzalez. The only thing I don’t know of is how he is defensively. And if he’s versatile enough to play any other positions. Thoughts?

I like Timmons over Hicks/Hernandez

but I don’t think he is better than Infante or Brooks. I hope they bring him up when the roster expands though as a utility infielder.

As far as his defense, you can look at his numbers here. Use this to help make sense of them.

The main thing he has going aganist him is that he isn’t on the 40 man roster already. I guess he could take Chipper’s spot though.

I mentioned him in one of the front page threads as well – he seems to be flying under peoples radars… hopefully, he doesn’t fly under the radar of Braves management as he’s a definite upgrade over Hicks or Hernandez

Chone Figgins

I hear everyone’s complaints about his contract. However, I do believe our GM would be smart enough to have them kick in some money. If that happens then I believe he would be our best option. I love Infante but I don’t want him starting every day simply because his versatility off the bench is amazing and I would love to keep him there.

I personally would like him to bat 2nd but with his speed advantage over Prado he could be a good lead off option as well. I’ve just become so fond of Prado in the lead-off spot and personally would keep him there.

We all know that Figgins is more comfortable at 3B and UZR has Prado with the advantage over Figgins at 2B anyhow.

If

the Mariners kick in money then I would be happy about the deal. My only concern is about a next year. Then again, Chipper wouldn’t be back until August/September so we would have a while to decide where he would play when Chipper returns.

I would think he would become a 2nd utility kind of guy upon Chipper’s return unless he’s raking.

Can he play CF/LF?

NO. Not with the contract he has. I would think he could slide over to LF

upon Chipper’s return because he would have no where to play. I doubt FW goes into next season with our current mess of an outfield. We will prob have a new CF and a full-time LF by the time next season starts.

UGGLA

Trade for UGGLA move Pradp to 3rd. Dan can fill the 3 hole in the line-up as well, which will take the pressure of doing too much off of Heyward.

by Mardale261 on Aug 13, 2010 7:49 AM EDT reply actions

Problem with any trade now

Is that we lost all our bargaining power. Teams know we are in first, with a hot Philly team trailing. We also lost Chipper. Their asking prices will be SKY high and higher. I think we sit still and use internal options unless we can get a decent upgrade at a reasonable price (unlikely).

"Give him the heater Ricky."

by Pavy848 on Aug 13, 2010 8:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Generally speaking, you’re right. However, there are multiple options – including that of not doing any trade (may not be the best idea, but if teams are gonna holds their talent for ransom, then that’s the breaks).

For example:
Cubs/Ramirez – this may be the best option due to seller motivation. The Cubs are certainly looking to dump their bad contracts, and he’s one of them. His performance has been up and down, but seems to follow the fortunes of the team, so putting him on a competing club might be good. The Cubs should be willing to front half of his remaining contract through 2011 to foster a deal.

Mariners/Figgins – I don’t like this since his contract extends 3 more years, and he’s underwhelmed everyone this year immediately after signing it. Nonetheless, Seattle should be motivated to move him… but I don’t know that I’d do that except for very little in return.

The trouble with either of these two is that you have to expect a Chipper return in 2011. That creates a logjam at third… unless you have a priori info from Chipper that he would not expect to return.

Therefore, let me propose a few others for which that would not be an issue:

Tigers/Inge: Brandon Inge is just becoming available after a broken left hand. He is also a 2011 free agent. His numbers are actually close to Chipper’s this year… kinda… .250/.327/.392 slugging (only 6 homers after 27 last year).

Red Sox/Beltre: well… he’ll be a Type A Free Agent, hitting .331 and slugging .567, so this would truly be an expensive rental if the Red Sox concede the AL East.

Tigers/Jhonny Peralta: Acquired from the indians near the deadline as a fill-in/rental. Might be harder to get through waivers than Inge, but certainly Detroit has to know that they can part with one of these two at this point – they’re 9-1/2 back.

Red Sox/Lowell: you’d think something could be done here.

Unfortunately, the NL options are few for free agent 3B guys… most good ones are on teams in the hunt. Melvin Mora is the closest to an option… and I wouldn’t go there.

From what I have heard...

…none of those guys will make it through waivers. Aramis is the only possibility. Maybe Lowell, but I doubt it. Beltre, Inge, and Figgins certainly did not if MLBTR’s report is accurate. (They reported that a major league official said there had been a ton of waiver claims made the last couple of days and basically nobody worth getting made it through waivers.)

by cavebird on Aug 13, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Curious – though not terribly surprising. Wonder what team would call a waiver-claim bluff first and say “you want him? you got him!”.

It’s merely speculation. Rarely do you see trades like these come to fruition. I still think it makes sense, but I know many others aren’t so sure. The more I think about it, the more I don’t think the Braves will make any external moves.

Chipper at the game (the day after surgery) - how good was that to see!

I am excited to hear that Chipper feels the day after the surgery that he’s already 3 weeks ahead of where he was last time, especially when you consider he’s a lot older now too. A lot of guys would have stayed home and rested with that leg up on a pillow in a recliner, taking it easy…but Chipper was with the team, encouraging them.

The post game interview with Chip Caray was nice to see. Very candid. He still has the desire to play again and go out on his own terms. I support him 100% in that.

With Chipper getting 6 months to rest his whole body – he may come back closer to the 2008 Chipper than the 2010 version.
Wouldn’t THAT be awesome!
