Braves Billy Wagner Misses Out On All-Star Final Vote
Braves closer Billy Wagner had a chance to make the All-Star team in the final vote, which was conducted over the last week, but Reds slugger Joey Votto beat out Wagner and the other contenders for the final spot. The voters did the right thing to send the NL OPS leader to the All-Star game.
It would have been nice to have another Braves player in there, but Wags has been there before, and I'd prefer his 39-year old surgically repaired elbow got some rest than went full steam for any length of time in an exhibition game. There still is a chance he makes the team if an injury occurs which necessitates him being added.

Good.
I didn’t want Wags or Glaus there and I don’t want Heyward playing either. Gotta get them healthy and rested.

I have mixed feelings on whether i want him there or not.

I will admit I voted for Wags until my fingers nearly fell off
for the simple reason I have so much confidence in his pitching abilities. I want the NL to win the game more this year than I have in several years, because I feel we have a team that very well could be playing in the WS, and I want home field advantage.
I doubt a couple of our players even get in the game, Omar specifically. Charlie will be afraid to put him in now, fearing he will make an out, and he will hear even more complaining about him choosing Omar.
I also feel if the NL are winning going into the ninth inning, Wags is the one to shut it down. This is just my opinion and why I voted for him.
That said, I am happy for Votto, and hope if he gets in the game he plays well.

I’d think the criticism might be greater for choosing Infante and not playing him. But I could be wrong.

Heyward will play
Unless he has a setback taking BP over the weekend, he will play. The other two guys have played in all-star games before so it’s no big deal for them to miss it, but Heyward has to go just in case he never makes it again.
I think
that Heyward is probably going to make more All-Star teams in the future.
I hate the Phillies so much...
Probably
but there are those little things called “career ending injuries”.
Then go, have fun, take in the environment and the lacking room...
maybe even take BP. But don’t play.
I agree
I want his thumb completely healed before he tries to play. We need him healthy for the remainder of the season if possible.

His thumb's not going to be completely healed until the offseason.

This is what I heard regarding the injury at first
but now the story is different. I posted a fanpost on this situation. I truly hope this latest update is correct.

If you're talking about the recent fanshot on his potential readiness for the AS game...
That article doesn’t say anything different at all. Just that they had a particular place they wanted him to be when it came to flexibility/pain before they wanted him to start swinging a bat again. Doesn’t mean that place is anywhere close to 100%.

Maybe now
People in the sports media, such as it is, will shut the hell up about Omar.

Zimmerman was still a better choice.

Nope.

Probably not, but we can hope.
I watched the Reds -Phils game tonight, and granted Votto hit a HR, but he turned around the next inning and made an error that allowed the Phils to tie it up. The Phils ended up winning the game in extra-innings. I am confident in his offensive abilities, but have some concerns about him defensively. I hope he doesn’t make a game changing error in the AS game. Of course, I hope none of the NL players make any costly errors. I only point out that he is not perfect, as some of the media would like us to believe.
Washington Tribune, June 29 2010 – "The stonecutters carving Stephen Strasburg’s name onto the Washington Monument have been directed to await further instructions."
But, we could have had Wags on the team if we didn’t have Omar’s spot…

Send Rhodes home...
…and name Wagner to the team. That’s what I’d do. I’m glad Votto’s there. Any baseball fan worth a damn shouldn’t be happy about a guy like Omar making the team. Nevertheless, he’s there. Good for him…and the pictures he has on ol’ Cholly.
Infante
made it because he can play ever position except pitcher and catcher. He was selected for the role that he was (more than anybody else in the league) suitable to play. In that sense, he is an All-Star.
I hate the Phillies so much...
Out of the few comments you've made on TC, this has to be the dumbest, imo

Wagner should
have made it to the team over, say, Meeks. But there was no way he was winning final vote with both Votto and Zimmerman in there.
I hate the Phillies so much...
I was kind of hoping...
Those two would split the vote.

Bashing the Infante pick
is soooo old, already, it’s old. It’s the All Star Game, there are weird picks every year. I just really hope this doesn’t turn into a thing where every time there is a bad pick people refer back to the Infante pick. I mean, everyone is aware that the starting NL catcher has an OPS in the low .600’s right? So maybe all the people who get all pissy about Infante can get mad at themselves for voting in such a shitty catcher. Obviously not many perusers of this site voted for Molina over McCann or any other deserving catcher, but a lot of these whiners did. So annoying.
Infante didn't get voted in.
He was selected. By the manager who’s responsible for winning the game.

A manager who has won the World Series and thus might just know what he’s doing.
"You were not brought upon this world to 'get it', Mr. Burton. " - David Lo Pan
Meh…by chosing a career bench player over the NL’s best hitter, I think he may have proven that he DOESN’T know what he is doing.
Seriously, anyone could have won a WS with that Phillies team.

I just felt the need to get my Bold on.
Ultimately, this is all "Bud"’s fault. If they were trying to do what the game was supposed to do (provide a team of each league’s best and most popular players, in that order of importance) then Omar wouldn’t have been chosen and Zimmerman probably would have.
Since there is now so much riding on the game, the managers, especially ones with a direct stake, real or perceived, in who gets home field for the WS, are going to manage it like a real game. That is, inevitably, going to conflict with the idea of getting a team made up of an attractive group of players who the fans want to see but who might wind up being less than the sum of their parts as an actual team on the field.
The game has two purposes and now, more and more, they’re in conflict. I don’t really think Omar, as valuable a player as he is on the Braves roster, really fits the definition the way it used to be. I’m just really sick of seeing him trashed, as if he somehow personally forced the issue.
"You were not brought upon this world to 'get it', Mr. Burton. " - David Lo Pan
I still haven’t seen him trashed anywhere…then again, I am not reading too many other sites at the moment.

Except he chose his own first baseman rather than Votto. Granted, he has to see Ryan Howard every day after the ASG, so I can understand the pick. However, unless the game goes extras, I really don’t see a 4th 1B getting an AB, much like Pujols a few years back.

Hello, how about Heap who didn’t make it into the 08 game until the 15th inning as a defense replacement, nonetheless. Talk about rotting on the bench

The crazy part is, that is exactly what is going to happen. I will bet almost anything on it.

One rep from each team....
and Pittsburgh gets Evan Meek (Wags spot) over Andrew McCutchen? They must be so proud. BTW..Votto definitely deserved it.
