Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/3

Carlos Perez picked up his second win of the season for Danville, allowing just 2 unearned runs while striking out 8.

Gwinnett 3, Durham 0

  • M. Young 1-3, 2B, BB, .304 AVG
  • F. Freeman 2-4, 2B, .285 AVG
  • B. Canizares 1-3, 2B, RBI, BB, .309 AVG
  • M. Jones 1-4, HR (14), RBI, .260 AVG
  • J. Thurston 2-4, HR (7), RBI, .249 AVG
  • T. Redmond 7 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 7 K, W (8), 3.92 ERA
  • C. Kimbrel 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K, SV (11), 0.95 ERA
  • Matt Young and Freddie Freeman stay hot, with Freeman extending his hitting streak to 9 games. Mitch Jones has been exactly what the Braves expected him to be when they signed him. After leading Gwinnett with 9 wins last season, Todd Remond already has 8 this year. He's been a little off and on this year, but he's actually been a lot better than last season. Craig Kimbrel is awesome, ho hum.

    Mississippi 1, Birmingham 2

  • A. Richardson 1-2, BB, SB (9), .291 AVG
  • L. Bolivar 2-2, HR (2), RBI, .305 AVG
  • S. Diamond 7.2 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 3.68 ERA
  • After spending most of May and June with Gwinnett, Luis Bolivar was sent back to Mississippi this week, and he's making a case to head back up to AAA, going 8-15 with 2 homers in the 5 games since his return. Nobody deserves to lose if they only give up 2 runs in 7.2 innings, but Scott Diamond's offense let him down. Diamond's on a nice little roll, with a 2.20 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP in his last 5 starts. He could stand to give up a few less hits, but he's really been pitching well.

    Myrtle Beach 0, Salem 2

  • C. Harrilchak 1-3, 2B, .225 AVG
  • J. Teheran 5 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 4 BB, 6 K, 2.92 ERA
  • Despite taking the loss, Julio Teheran made a nice comeback after allowing 8 earned runs in his last start. He had more walks than he had in any previous start with the Pelicans, actually as many as he had in his last 3 starts combined. Myke Jones' 8 game hitting streak ended as he went 0-4 in the game.

    Rome 6, Greensboro 4

  • R. Flores 1-4, 2B, RBI, SB (3), OF Assist, .243 AVG
  • RSF 2-4, 2B, RBI, .321 AVG
  • T. Cunningham 2-4, .270 AVG
  • E. Salcedo 1-3, RBI, .143 AVG
  • J. Hanson 2-4, 2B, RBI, .252 AVG
  • C. Rasmus 5 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 3.15 ERA
  • D. Hale 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K, W (2), 5.98 ERA
  • Since rejoining Rome, Ramon Flores is 4-11 with 3 RBI. Todd Cunningham is on a tear of his own, with 4 hits in his last 7 at bats. Edward Salcedo collected his first hit and his first RBI in the US. Cory Rasmus got knocked around a little tonight, but fortunately David Hale was masterful in relief. There's realy no questioning the stats, as a starter Hale has been very bad, as a reliever he's been very good. Frankly, because at 22 he's old for the league, I think it's worth moving him up to Myrtle Beach and letting him work out of the bullpen there.

    Danville 5, Princeton 3

  • J. Leonard 1-3, 2B, RBI, .333 AVG
  • J. Terdoslavich 1-3, 3B, RBI, BB, .261 AVG
  • J. Whitmer 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, .281 AVG
  • E. Reyes 2-3, 2B, .167 AVG
  • C. Perez 7 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 8 K, W (1), 0.53 ERA
  • R. Pacheco 2 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 BB, 4 K, SV (1), 7.50 ERA
  • Joe Leonard made his professional debut toinght, rapping out an RBI double and striking out twice. Jace Whitmer is 5 for his last 8 with 4 RBI. Carlos Perez is a skinny lefty who's looking to join the slew of recent foreign signees who've made a huge splash at Danville, and so far he's forcing everyone to learn his name.

GCL Braves 12, GCL Tigers 3, Game 1

  • M. Lipka 3-4, RBI, BB, .300 AVG
  • W. Beckwith 2-4, HR (1), 4 RBI, 2 E (1, 2), .276 AVG
  • E. Sanchez 3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 E (2, 3), .333 AVG
  • F. de los Santos 3-4, 2B, .400 AVG
  • D. Jurik 3 IP, 2 R, 0 ER 0 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 2.25 ERA
  • D. Winnie 3 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 1 K, W (2), 4.50 ERA
  • This game's biggest hitting stars, first baseman William Beckwith and third baseman Edison Sanchez, who combined to go 5-9 with 2 doubles, a homer, and 6 RBI, also combined to make 4 errors, helping toward allowing 2 unearned runs. Matt Lipka extends his hitting streak to 5 games, going 9-20 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI, and 3 walks in that span. 20 year old second baseman Fernando de los Santos is on a tear as well, with a 4 game hitting streak of his own, going 8-14 with 4 doubles and 3 RBI in those games.

GCL Braves 0, GCL Tigers 2, Game 2

  • D. Rohm 3-5, .310 AVG
  • E. Sanchez 1-4, .324 AVG
  • W. Perez 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 6.08 ERA
  • Edison Sanchez slid across the diamond to play first base in the second game, finishing the double header going 4-9. He's started the season well, hitting .324 with a .851 OPS in 11 games. After a couple of poor showings to start the year, 19 year old Williams Perez pitched great in this one, shutting out the Lakeland Tigers over 4 innings.

DSL Braves 7, DSL Blue Jays 1

  • A. Alcantra 3-4, 2 2B, RBI, .291 AVG
  • C. Franco 1-3, HR (2), 4 RBI, BB, .204 AVG
  • E. Maldonado 2-4, .222 AVG
  • L. Madrid 2-4, RBI, .222 AVG
  • J. Gil 6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, W (2), 1.99 ERA
  • 20 year old first baseman Aris Alcantra continues his solid season, collecting 3 hits, including 2 doubles. 18 year old third baseman Carlos Franco did most of the damage today though, driving in 4 on a grand slam. 19 year old righty Jean Carlos Gil continues his own good work, fanning 8 Jays de Azul.

It is just amazing how big he is in person…especially compared to Young.

Hey CB any word on Dave Filak?

I know he signed but I haven’t heard anything more

by UpstateNyBravesFan on Jul 4, 2010 8:55 AM EDT reply actions

    What do you mean?

He’s made two good starts since signing in Danville. He has a FB that runs 93-95 and tops out at 97, a knuckle-curve that’s his best pitch that has been described as “unhittable” and a developing change.

oh well thanks I haven’t heard anything more on where he went or how he was doing. I know he’s pretty filthy from seeing him play at O-state…

    Ok

I wasn’t sure if you had been checking the mL threads here. Filak has pitched like 2 starts so far and about 8IP under his belt and has only given up 1 run so far.

Yup I had been checking but I have been pretty busy lately…. Must have missed it! Thanks man!

    Lipka

I’m lovin this kid he’s adjusting to the wood bat just fine, showing great speed and playing great defense at SS and what I like the most he focusing a lot on going to the opposite field and being patient at the plate which is key for young hitters.

I was at the Gwinnet game sitting near center field. One bulls fan was jawwing with Schafer a bit, yelling at him to drop it and such. Schafer laughed back and forth with him eventually throwing him a ball. He was a good sport and an awesome fielder.

Every time I see Freeman’s name now it comes with a 2B and occasionally a Homer. Do all the doubles indicate he’ll get home run power, or will he in fact turn out to be a Mark Grace type of hitter?

by Sparhawk on Jul 4, 2010 10:32 AM EDT reply actions

I doubt he’s ever going to develop 40 HR power, but he’s doesn’t project to be a slouch in the HR department either. I’d expect him to hit somewhere around 20-25 homers a season if he stays on his current track. That would be a little better than Grace’s career high of 17 and career average of 12.

He’s only 20 and still developing physically, so some of those doubles should turn into homers as he grows.

Oh I forgot to mention that Redmond looked dominate.

Kimbrel looked good too, but he got to three balls on two of the hitters. Seemed a fine line to walk…
