Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/30

Mike Minor has plenty to smile about after his performance for Gwinnett tonight.

The Braves have sold Mitch Jones' contract to the Pirates. Jones will report to the Indianapolis Indians, the Pirates AAA team. In 89 games for Gwinnett the outfielder hit .250 with a .786 OPS along with 23 doubles, 18 home runs, and 45 RBI. Those 18 home runs are a Gwinnett single season record.

Gwinnett 12, Rochester 0

  • N. McLouth 1-4, HR (3), RBI, .275 AVG
  • W. Timmons 4-4, 2B, HR (5), RBI, BB, .302 AVG
  • B. Canizares 1-3, HR (7), 3 RBI, BB, .320 AVG
  • D. Hernandez 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI, .306 AVG
  • M. Young 2-4, 2 RBI, .302 AVG
  • M. Minor 7 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 8 K, W (4), 1.99 ERA
  • Mike Mionr has been called the Braves' most tradeable prospect and he may have increased his value with a dominant start on the eve of the deadline. Minor has been great at AAA, lowering his ERA from 4.03 in AA to 1.99, his WHIP from 1.24 in AA to 0.88. Wes Timmons has been red hot in his last 10 games, with a .415 average and 1.112 OPS in that span. Barbaro Canizares has been hot in his last 10 as well, hitting .424 with a 1.078 OPS.

    Mississippi 4, Huntsville 5

  • A. Richardson 2-4, BB, E (6), .299 AVG
  • E. Duncan 2-5, .285 AVG
  • D. Linares 2-4, RBI, .256 AVG
  • S. McGill 1-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, .143 AVG
  • In his last 4 games, Antoan Richardson has gone 7-17 with 3 stolen bases. Donell Linares as been hot in his last 4 as well, also going 7-17. Before this season Eric Duncan had never played second base, but he's played 54 games there this year, hitting .283 with a .735 OPS on the season.

    Myrtle Beach 9, Winston-Salem 6, Game 1

  • C. Harrilchak 3-4, 2B, 3B, RBI, .293 AVG
  • Mi. Jones 1-4, HR (4), 3 RBI, .248 AVG
  • J. Kreke 2-3, RBI, BB, .340 AVG
  • M. Kennelly 1-1, 2B, 2 RBI, .200 AVG
  • O. Marval 2-2, 2 2B, RBI, .283 AVG
  • M. Crim 5 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 0 BB, 1 K, W (6), 5.09 ERA
  • Cory Harrilchak stays hot, rapping out 2 extra base hits. Jordan Kreke has been great since joining the Pelicans, and in his last 5 games he's gong 10-19 with a double, 3 RBI, and 2 walks. Matt Crim picked up his 6th win, even if it wasn't considred a quality start.

    Myrtle Beach 11, Winston-Salem 1, Game 2

  • C. Miles 1-3, 3B, 2 RBI, BB, .248 AVG
  • D. Nelson 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI, .287 AVG
  • L. Sumoza 2-3, 2B, RBI, .226 AVG
  • S. Sime 1-2, HR (4), 2 RBI, BB, .259 AVG
  • B. Schlehuber 1-2, 3B, 2 RBI, BB, .158 AVG
  • JJ. Hoover 5 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 3 K, W (9), 3.35 ERA
  • P. Clemens 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 3.54 ERA
  • JJ Hoover couldn't let Erik Cordier best him, and he dominated the Dash to pick up his 9th win of the year and tie Cordier for the organization lead. His offense helped him out, making the most of their opportunities, scoring 11 runs on 10 hits. At one point in the year, it looked like Cole Miles was turning a corner, but he's tailed off of late and his total season line, a .248 average and .642 OPS, isn't as good as the numbers he put up last year with the Pelicans, when he hit .266 with a .679 OPS.

    Rome 1, Asheville 2

  • C. Bethancourt 2-4, 2B, HR (3), RBI, .256 AVG
  • E. Salcedo 2-4, 2B, .220 AVG
  • R. Lopez 3.1 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 4.38 ERA
  • D. Hale 4.2 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 2 K, 4.57 ERA
  • Christian Bethancourt has gone 4 for his last 8 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. After allowing 14 earned runs in 12.2 innings over his last 3 starts, Robinson Lopez allowed just 1 in 3.1 innings tonight. Despite picking up his 8th loss of the year, David Hale continues to dominate in relief. In July he made 7 appearances, pitching 23.1 innings with a 0.77 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP.

    Danville 6, Princeton 3

  • A. Simmons 3-5, 2 2B, 2 SB (8, 9), .267 AVG
  • J. Dalfonso 2-4, RBI, .358 AVG
  • B. Kleinknecht 3-4, 2B, 2 RBI, E (4), .286 AVG
  • L. La Point 5 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 4.60 ERA
  • M. Suschak 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K, SV (3), 3.98 ERA
  • Andrelton Simmons broke an 0-10 slump with 3 hits tonight, and stole a pair of bases for good measure. It will be interesting to see where his numbers are at the end of the year, because even though he's hit .316 with a .772 OPS in his last 10 games, for the year he's only hit .267 with a .661 OPS. 20 year old Jakob Dalfonso, last year's 18th round selection, continues to hit well. In his last 10 the corner infielder has hit .429 with a 1.150 OPS.

GCL Braves 1, GCL Pirates 4

  • B. Drury 1-4, HR (2), RBI, .220 AVG
  • F. de los Santos 2-3, .317 AVG
  • D. Winnie 3 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 5.70 ERA
  • 20 year old Dominican second baseman Fernando de los Santos is having a fine year in his return to the GCL, hitting .317 with a .831 OPS.

DSL Braves 3, DSL Blue Jays 2

  • G. Reyes 1-3, 2B, RBI, BB, .304 AVG
  • J. Peguero 1-2, 2B, RBI, BB, .197 AVG
  • R. Bricenio 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 K, W (6), 2.67 ERA
  • I. Geronimo 3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 K, SV (6), 0.65 ERA
  • 20 year old Venezuelan Rafael Bricenio has been good this year, with a 2.67 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP in 54 innings. But 19 year old Ignacio Geronimo has been even better, albeit on a shorter workload. He's put up a 0.65 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP in 27.2 innings while going a perfect 3-0 with 6 saves.

If we trade Mike Minor before tomorrow

we better be getting Josh Willingam, Jose Bautista or someone better.

when is Frank Wren going to wake his Ass up and see the Braves needs a Batter? This game Against Washington is Showing the team is not hitting. Get some help are philadelphia is going bnack to First? If you can’t see this maybe john scherhous should replace your stupid ass.

    i think

he is worth more than both of them. If we trade Minor it should only be for someone of higher value than those two. Like Markakis, Kemp, and in a fantasy world Ichiro.

I don’t think he is worth more than Willingham.

I’ll pass on Ichiro. He’s basically just a .360-.380 OBP with little power and he isn’t a real asset stealing bases these days.

We would have 400 hits between the top 2 spots in our lineup by the end of the year if we got Ichiro and Prado and they kept up their current paces.

    IMO

Markakis is one of my favorites, but his salary jumps next season (over 50M for the next 4 years). He doesn’t offer 10mill power, not the right handing hitter we need, and would cost Minor plus a couple other prospects.

Kemp would be great, but is he the Braves clubhouse type of guy? I keep thinking Kenny Loften.

Ichiro is one of the most popular guys in the league and gets paid like it. There’s a reason his name doesn’t come up in trade rumors. His teammate Franklin Gueterriez, would make much more sense.

And judging by the demands for Dunn (they wanted Hudson plus two more high prospects from the White Sox), they are going to get ridiculous with Willingham, who still has a year of control. I doubt we offer that much to an in division rival.

    Huntsville Report

Quite a few hits, though not in bunches enough to sustain a rally. 1B Gomez had a rough night, including a key strikeout and a GIDP. RF Willy Cabrera went hitless (I believe)… at least through 8 innings. On the other hand, both my daughters walked away with baseballs, so it wasn’t exactly a lost evening.

New SS Pastornicky (sp?) looked very capable in the field, though had one semi-error on a double-clutch. Otherwise assisted in 2 double plays and very nearly pulled off a great play on a sharp grounder redirected by the pitching mound. Yep, new pitcher Collins is a little guy, but also looks … kinda like a spark plug. Think Marcus Giles, kind of.

    Mississippi

We drove over to Huntsville Wednesday night to see Teheran pitch his first AA game. It was a rough outing, but he will be fine as he adjusts to a higher level of play. He’s one tough kid with a lot of drive. Got to see Collins when he came in to relieve Benino Pruneda. He’s a little guy, but WOW!- very impressive and hard throwing. I agree with Carpengui about Pastornicky too….pretty good trade choices on the Braves part. Jordan Schafer played and seemed to be giving 100% in all areas. He hit hard, ran hard and hustled in left field. We nice to see some former Rome players again.

The outcome of the game wasn’t so great, but it’s always interesting to visit other stadiums and see how things go with other teams in other places. Super small crowd for such a big stadium and not a very lively atmosphere compared to what we are used too, but it was still a pleasant experience.

    I've noticed:

Resop and Chavez can thrive in AAA with little movement on their pitches, relying mainly on velocity. How is the movement on Minor’s pitches? Heck, I don’t even really know his arsenal.

by DuPu on Jul 31, 2010 6:42 AM EDT reply actions

Usually a pitch gets flatter as a pitcher tries to throw harder, so one might expect this to happen with Minor reaching a higher velocity this season. I haven’t seen him pitch this year, so I’m not sure whats going on. Minor doesn’t have the velocity of Resop or Chavez, but his ability to mix the speeds of his pitches is devastating to a hitter’s timing.

As far as his arsenal…he throws a fastball that will be from 86MPH to 93MPH. He mixes speeds and locations with the fastball very well, which keeps hitters guessing (other than expecting 96 high heat every pitch). His change up is his best pitch, and he also throws a curve and slider.

Minor is.a fastball slider change guy his fb was plus before.he was getting it up to 96 because of it movement. What I hear now is it has a little less movement with increased velocity but still plus.

The night I saw Minor he threw 2 pitches, a fastball that he worked between 88 and 92 and a slider that he threw between 82 and 84.

    Greg Norton

I watched a few minutes of the PCL game between Memphis and New Orleans last night on the Comcast channel. I was surprised to see that Greg Norton is the manager of the New Orleans club. I knew he retired last year I just didn’t know he was managing a team already. Good for him.

by JimH on Jul 31, 2010 10:30 AM EDT reply actions

    He was hitting coach...

and then when the Marlins fired Fredi Gonzalez, they brought up their AAA manager and Norton took over.

That makes sense. Thanks for the info. Seems like a good deal for Norton considering he just retired as a player that he is already managing a AAA club.

Mike Minor is looking pretty good, to say the least. I wonder if he might not be a good late-season bullpen arm for us.

I suspect that Freddie Freeman could out-produce Troy Glaus right now in the majors. I wonder if Frank Wren would consider dumping Glaus if his slump continues and starting Freddie’s clock a bit early.
