DOB also adds that they have not made a decision on recalling Blanco when he is eligible, and that Jason Heyward is an option for CF as well.

Did you expect DFA?

by fandave on Jul 27, 2010 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

No

I thought they would give him a few more opportunities to succeed at the Major League level based solely on his performances in years past, then make a move either externally or internally.

I expected a DFA...

…because I didn’t realize McLouth had options left. Actually I very suprised about that, but I guess he hasn’t been up nearly as long as I thought.

by cavebird on Jul 27, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

That and he was good early in his career for a bad team

Which means he probably didnt have many years when he was sent up and down. Good players usually have option years left even when they are older.

Options are based on years, not number of times sent up and down?

I remember Julio Franco having an option left a few years back- oldest player in AAA.

by Broccoman on Jul 27, 2010 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

Options are actually years. If you are sent down at any time in the season, you use up an option. The team can send you down as many times as they want during that season without using more options.

"If I have asthma, they won't let me scuba. And if I can’t scuba, then what’s this all been about?? What am I working toward??"

by Doghnut on Jul 27, 2010 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Question #2, do September Callups count as an option?

by Broccoman on Jul 29, 2010 6:47 AM EDT up reply actions

thats a good question

And I believe so. September means the roster expands from 25 to 40 people. The people who are in an option year are already going to be on the 40 man roster. As far as I understand it, an option year is used anytime you are on the 40 man roster, but not the 25 man roster.

So, the people who would normally be called up are probably already using an option year anyway.

Woooooooooo Doggie!

McLouth wasn’t as terrible as his numbers show, like somebody suggested after the big double play he hit into the other day, if it is a few feet either way he is the hero. That shot was a rocket but it was right at the SS.

That said, his “swing improvements” were non-existent in my opinion and he needs to fix it before he is an everyday player again.

He just isn’t our best option right now, so I’m glad the front office has a sense of urgency and sent him down.

I knew there was some sort of rule about the length of time he had to stay in the minors before getting recalled, but I don’t know exactly what it is, so if someone could be so kind as to enlighten me….

I hate to see him at the plate in a Braves uniform.

You have to be at least a little bloodless if you want to win. He’s a pro, he’ll be able to handle it. It’s not like they marched him out in front of the crowd, tore the tomahawk off his chest, broke his bat over Chino’s knee and forced him to march out into the parking lot.

by Mr. Sanchez on Jul 27, 2010 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

You have to have 5 years of service time (which McLouth doesn’t) to refuse an assignment but remain with the club (presumably forcing a release). With 3 years of service time you can refuse an assignment and become a free agent. That would be a dumb move McLouth’s part as he wouldn’t find anyone willing to pay him close to what he’s due for the rest of this year and next.

by Ron A. on Jul 27, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s what I read from one source. Checking it elsewhere and it seems like the 3 years just means you can refuse to be removed from the 40-man roster and 5 years is required to refuse an assignment. So he probably doesn’t even have the option to refuse the assignment.

Well i think everyone that followed the Braves thought it was a good trade at the time, myself included. I don’t know why, but he just never seemed to hit his stride here and then he started to lose confidence and it just snowballed from there. He was good enough to be an all-star at one point, so I’m not ready to give up on him being a good player again

+1 i agree with alot of that exspecially the part about the confidence.which is what scares me most because of how things went with frenchy but only time will tell but he just isnt doing it right now and until he could make maybe more strides in AAA we should keep him there, unless it comes time to cut the ties and he dosent return to his form which we thought we were getting once we traded for him he’s making too much to just ride it out in AAA.

keep him put

I thought about how we might see him again in September as a pinch runner, but I think the better idea is to leave him at Gwinnett and if he has success, let him have more. Let him have a full, solid third of a season down there, a long off season to follow, and come back next spring with a chance to compete for a spot on the roster. If he gets fifty ABs down there and hits .310, does anyone believe that will translate to Atlanta? I think he’d wilt instantly again. No thanks.

I understand why they tried hard to get him going. The best possible Braves lineup would start with a productive McLouth batting leadoff (by productive I’m thinking the Brett Butler numbers we were hoping to see) and Prado second. Imagine how many more RBI Prado would have. But now we have no real centerfielder heading for the stretch of a pennant race, and the reigning badasses of the NL are waking from their slumber. This is hardly Wren’s finest hour.

I don’t know what the solution is in center. Maybe there isn’t one. Maybe the solution is to bring Troy Glaus back from the dead. It’s been more than five weeks since he or Heyward hit a homerun. I think it’s possible. Just needs to start tonight!

Yeah, because what Yunel does on a different team, facing different teams, facing different pitchers, playing in a different ballpark batting in a different spot in the order with different teammates surrounding him is relevant to his value to the Braves organization.

It absolutely is when you throw in a statement like “but we’re still coming out ahead so far.”

That means your opinion is that the Braves have benefitted more from the deal. Which, without Yunel’s stats for the same period, is an unfounded statement.

Put this on a few posts but wanted to get some feedback...

I just heard an “on-the-block” name that I hadn’t seen mentioned before, but I think it makes the most sense out of ANY of the names tossed around recently.

Scott Podsednik is a left handed bat and not a big power threat (only 5 HRs on the year) so for all the people demanding right handed power, you won’t be pleased. But he’s hitting .308 on the year with 30 stolen bases and only 56 Ks in 380 ABs. Defensively, he’s more than serviceable as a LF/CF with good range, though I’m not sure how his arm is.

We could hit him leadoff to utilize his speed, move Prado down to second, and Heyward down to sixth in the everyday lineup.

Podsednik
Prado
Jones
Glaus
McCann
Heyward
Hinske/Diaz
Gonzo

Plus, we know Dayton Moore is comfortable trading with the Braves. I’m no GM so I have no idea how much of a package it would take to complete this trade, but I can’t imagine the asking price would be that high.

So, shoot it down tell me what you think?

Wow, so, at this point, Clevelen is more useful as a pinch runner/defensive replacement

than McClouth? Jeez, I feel bad for the guy, but what else can they do? He is untradeable and unplayable.

I am not so sure about Heyward in CF. He has already shown how injury prone he is since his minor league days. The idea of that 6’6" diving all over the park scares the hell out of me.

But he’s the guy who we’d rather see not hitting at all because we don’t trust him. Nate has shown an ability to be a well above-average major league OF. Clevlen? Not so much. And I’d hardly call Heyward “injury-prone.” They were just very careful in babying his minor pulls and strains that every player gets because he’s, you know, Heyward.

Today is a day of good news.

First Rossy’s extension and now this. I like Nate as a person, but by golly he was just killing us. I think Melky / Blanco can hold down the fort in center, but I am loving the idea of trying Heyward there for the rest of the season and acquiring a corner OF bat. Maybe his defense won’t play there, but we won’t know until we try… And if it does play there, that just makes him even more awesome.

Honestly

i hope he figures it out so we have some wiggle room with the outfield next year. right now we’re looking at LF and CF needing to be filled this offseason and thats on top of 1B and possibly 3B
