Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/26

Willie Cabrera continues to punish the Southern League.

Gwinnett - Postponed

MIssissippi 5, Tennessee 10

  • T. Pastornicky 1-4, BB, SB (5), .294 AVG
  • W. Cabrera 3-4, 3B, RBI, .334 AVG
  • M. Gomez 2-5, 3B, RBI, .266 AVG
  • J. Schafer 1-4, RBI, .280 AVG
  • D. Linares 3-5, .253 AVG
  • T. Gustafson 3 IP, 7 ER, 8 H, 4 BB, 1 K, 5.08 ERA
  • R. Sullivan 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K, 5.97 ERA
  • Willie Cabrera continues to rake, extending his itting streak to 6 games going 10-21 with 4 doubles, a triple, and 7 RBI. He's probably as confused as anyone about why he's still in AA. Tyler Pastornicky may end up making the Yunel Escobar-Alex Gonzalez trade a great one for the Braves all by himself. The most impressive thing about how he's hitting in AA: he's only 20 years old.

    Myrtle Beach 4, Salem 5

  • D. Nelson 3-5, 2B, .284 AVG
  • Mi. Jones 2-5, 2B, RBI, SB (6), .247 AVG
  • J. Kreke 3-4, 2B, RBI, .325 AVG
  • O. Marval 2-4, .271 AVG
  • G. Rodriguez 2-3, BB, SB (4), .228 AVG
  • C. Rasmus 5 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 8 H, 3 BB, 3 K, 5.40 ERA
  • Gerry Rodriguez has been back with the Pelicans for about a week after serving his 50 game PED suspension. He's fortunate to have kept his job, as his teammates who were suspended at the same time, Yoel Campusano and Armando Zazueta, were released. Jordan Kreke has been too old for every league he's played in to garner much attention as a prospect, and he's still too old for the Carolina League, but at least he's dominating like he should. He's a very solid player who does well at third and shortstop, so there is some upside there. Cory Rasmus gave up a few too many hits in his Pelicans debut and took the loss, but it wasn't that bad of a start.

    Rome - Postponed

    Danville 11, Bristol 9

  • J. Mowry 2-4, 3B, RBI, 2 BB, SB (1), .289 AVG
  • E. Gattis 2-5, 2B, BB, .384 AVG
  • R. Delgado 2-4, 2B, RBI, BB, .280 AVG
  • D. Rohm 4-6, RBI, .386 AVG
  • E. Reyes 2-5, 2B, RBI, SB (2), .284 AVG
  • A. Northcraft 5 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 2 K, 3.15 AVG
  • David Rohm was really good with the GCL Braves, with a .320 average and .812 OPS in 75 at bats, and he's been better in 44 at bats with Danville, with a .386 average and .894 OPS. Evan Gattis is straight up hammering the ball for the D-Braves, with a .384 average and .948 OPS in 99 at bats. He excells with runners on, cranking out a .477 average and 1.224 OPS in 44 at bats in that situation.

GCL Braves 2, GCL Tigers 0

  • M. Lipka 0-4, E (9), .339 AVG
  • D. Falcon 1-3, 2B, BB, SB (6), .424 AVG
  • W. Rivera 1-4, 3B, 2 RBI, .172
  • B. Jurik 5 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 7 K, W (3), 2.20 ERA
  • Matt Lipka not dominating the Tigers today was probably a newsworthy as anything else that happend. Daniel Falcon was overmatched at Danville but is undermatched in the GCL, with a .424 average, 1.033 OPS, and 6 steals in 8 games since his demotion. Dan Jurik missed a little over a month after getting blow up in his last start, to the tune of 5 earned runs in 4.2 innings, but came back strong today with 5 shutout innings. If you take out that last start his season line is a 0.75 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP. Of course, he's 23 playing in the GCL, so he should be dominating.

DSL Braves 1, DSL Angels 0

  • A. Alcantra 2-3, .321 AVG
  • J. Peguro 2-2, RBI, BB, .194 AVG
  • J. Gil 6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 7 K, W (3), 1.65 ERA
  • 18 year old Juan Peguro hasn't had much success in his pro debut, but he had a perfect day today, reaching base all three times he came to the plate. Hopefully he can build on that. 19 year old Jean Carlos Gil has had a ton of success in his pro debut, with a 1.65 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 43.2 innings, and continued that today, shutting out the Angles over 6 innings.

What’s Willie Cabrera’s ceiling? He didn’t make the Top 30 TC Braves’ Prospects list, so that makes me hesitant to think too highly of him right now. Is he playing that far above himself or does his true value lie between this season and his career stats?

I spent about 10 minutes trying to get some more info on him, but no dice. Any info or your own opinion on the guy would be appreciated. He’s having a great season and beyond TC, I don’t think many Braves’ fans know he exists.

Morton hit Heyward with an offspeed pitch. Early indication is that the baseball survived the impact.

I suppose his age isn’t helping him

    He's only 23

I know the comp has been used before, but I can’t help looking at him like Martin Prado.

Lightly touted minor league hitter who’s start will likely be as a backup, but he has the ability to just flat out consistently make solid contact.

I hope he doesn’t play out like Matt Young. A guy putting up good numbers year after year but rotting in AAA.

I suppose his ceiling is close to a Matt Diaz type, a platoon OFer who can hit for a solid average and rack up a few doubles but lacks homerun power and speed. I think if he could play CF he would be considered more of a prospect but it appears he is more of a corner OFer which limits his value.

Willie Cabrera- Im on the Willy Wagon

Ive been a longtime Braves fan ever since Furcal and many others made there way through the system. I must say that I have not seen a player as consistant as Cabrera. I hear what you all are saying but I had to post on this subject. Cabrera hasnt hit a ceiling yet, infact hes numbers continue to improve. here we have a player that has been under the radar all his career, in fact Talk Chop has mention that before in their writes ups. This kid played a 40 man roster in spring training, also was named MVP in Myrtle beach. so I did some diggin, This Kid comes from California in which he holds the all time BASE HIT RECORD IN A SINGLE SEASON (72). Now that’s impressive, not to mention a few more records in JR College. I must say he is a well rounded player that rarely strikes out, hes proven this through his minor league career.
I really feel this kid is just warming up, When you look at his stats, he has done more that some of our 1st round picks have. I really feel the braves are keeping him quiet for some aparent reason. Hes power is average with (5) HRs this season. in Danvile he batted .308 average,.805 ops, in Rome .262 with .663ops, in Myrtle .290avg .818 ops, 16HR, 32dbls, and last year in MS, 289 avg , 16HR, 33dbls, 812ops and only 54 SO,
Now isnt that impressive for a youngster. Willy is only 23 and has proven a steady record on my books, not to mention that when ive seen him play both in Myrtle and MS he draws a small crowed in RF. He can bring fans to the field. SO whats the deal, I say promote him or trade him to a team that deserves him.

Anyone notice how quickly our positional and name infield depth went from zero to promising?

At SS alone we have Lipka, Pastornicky, My. Jones, and Salcedo.

The future is looking brighter up the middle.
Salcedo at 3rd, Pastornick/Lipka at SS and Freeman at 1B in 2013?

    Its a nice dream.

If Cabrera was in AAA where would his at bats come?...

Clevlen, Blanco, and Mitch Jones in the OF, with Matt Young splitting time between there and 2B already. There’s a DH spot, but that’s mostly Barbaro Canizares (or one of those 4). Then there’s Tavares and Anderson as backups for them, and to be honest I’d rather Cabrera not be a backup, nor would I see him playing over Blanco, Clevlen, Jones, or Young.

    Kreke = Timmons the sequel?

Hope Pastornicky can keep up his hot start, for some reason I’m expecting him to fall back to earth soon. And it’d be nice to see Schafer start getting a few multi-hit games and extra base hits, now that he’s in AA.

    Cabrera-Im on the wagon

If Cabrera was in AAA, I really think he will get lost in the shuffle, the Braves have gone out and stacked up in Outfielders and now they dont know what to do with them. They brought way too many players and now they will use them for trades. The problem is that the outfielders worth seeing like Young, Cabrera, Rodriguez, Richardson, and a few others are aging just waiting for a spot. These Players like Cabrera, Young, Richardson can be Elite players for other clubs, in fact maybe even Prospects. So i say use them right or trade them, dont allow them to age to the point no one else wants them.
