They need more than a starting pitcher.

Shhhhhh!

Let them screw themselves, much in the way they did by trading for Halladay and signing Howard to that ridiculous deal.

If they trade Dom Brown, I’ll pee my pants. PLEASE let it happen!

I agree that signing Howard to that contract was absolutely ridiculous, but please explain how trading for one of the top 3 pitchers in all of baseball for a relatively small package of prospects is the Phillies screwing themselves.

by drdonkeypunch on Jul 21, 2010 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, they didn’t need him. They already had Cliff Lee. The Phillies, after losing Werth and possibly Rollins, Utley and Victorino (at least one of those guys will be gone after next year) will not be close to the team that they were last year. Their window of opportunity is closing fast.

That being said, they did not need a front line starter of Halladay’s caliber beyond this year. They already had one in Cliff Lee, who is younger and more affordable than Doc.

The Phillies gave up their top pitching prospect AND Cliff Lee in order to bring in Halladay. Then, they sign Halladay to a SIX YEAR extension at over $20M per year. Add in Howard’s $20+M per year salary, and all of a sudden, the Phillies are in trouble. Even though they have a $140M payroll, having $40M tied up each year for the next 6 years in two aging guys is not smart management. If you think Halladay will be this good 3 and 4 years from now, you are crazy. Halladay is aging, and will be what, 37 when his contract is up?

With the real heart of their offense not locked up (Utley, Victorino, Werth), and holes in the rest of their rotation (Blanton, Happ, who?), the Phillies have made all the right moves as far as a Braves fan is concerned.

I said it at the time, and I’ll stand by it – Halladay was a great move for Braves fans – especially since it cost them Lee.

Halladay was a three year contract i thought

You are correct. But, the point still remains that he will not be worth what he is getting paid 3 years from now. He is no young buck.

I think Halladay will remain effective at the end of his current contract. I agree that they screwed themselves with the 40M for 2 players though..

If anything, the boneheaded move was signing Howard to that deal. Granted, I understand why they did it, but dealing Lee for Halladay is more of an in-kind transaction. While I like Cliff Lee a lot, you can’t say the Phillies haven’t received great value from the deal thus far. Halladay has been phenomenal.

The Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay trades were completely separate.

The Roy Halladay trade was very good for the Phillies.

The Cliff Lee trade was fucking terrible for the Phillies. They could have kept him, and had a 1-2-3 of Halladay-Lee-Hamels, but for some reason they decided to trade a very affordable Cliff Lee for 3 not-so-great prospects to “replenish their system.”

They are two distinct trades, and should not be lumped into one.

by drdonkeypunch on Jul 21, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

They weren’t seperate – on happened so that the other could. It was a 3-way deal, not two seperate trades. They SHOULD be lumped into one, because it was one 3-way deal.

Buster Olney on Mike and Mike

Says they are talking to Houston for Oswalt for two prospects.

He says Werth would be in another deal with the Rays to balance salaries.

Brown probably wouldnt be included as he would replace Werth in the OF.

Can we make fun of them for trading Lee for those 3 scrubs from Seattle now? Or, should we wait till after they make a trade?

3 scrubs?

Tyson Gillies is one of the fastest players i’ve ever seen and Aumont is a plus pitching prospect

Jason Heyward...great guy

by KINGSLYTUT on Jul 21, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Neither is a big-time prospect.

Gillies can’t hit and Aumont is nothing special, probably a bullpen guy.

Compared to what Seattle got, yes 3 scrubs.

I checked the stats of Aumont, Gillies, and Rameriz before I made that statement, so I know their performances back what I said. Aumont has talent, but doesn’t know how to pitch. He is struggling fiercly at AA right now. Gillies might have speed, but he only has 2 SB this season (cause he can’t get on base). Rameriz isn’t doing horrible, thats the best I can say about him.

Those three for a FULL year of Cliff Lee. Seattle got one of the top prospects in baseball for half a year of Lee.

It doesn't matter

They’re not winning the east, or the wild card for that matter. Rockies/Giants/Dodgers/Padres/Reds/Cardinals will take that Wild Card spot. All stronger teams than the Phillies at this point.

Kawakami - 1, Halladay - 0

by BigG1392 on Jul 21, 2010 11:35 AM EDT reply actions

Please, let them trade prospects for Oswalt

then dump Werth for next to nothing. I love Ruben Amaro because he never just adds a piece, he always adds then subtracts so the Phillies never get better, only more dysfunctional.

by Jacob Peterson on Jul 21, 2010 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

If they go through on this

Ruben Amaro is an idiot. Yes, they need a starting pitcher, but it’s not like they need a guy like Oswalt who will cost a lot in terms of prospects. They could get a reliable veteran like Jake Westbrook for a couple of fringe prospects. Or they could sign Pedro again. It would be very stupid to trade good prospects for a frontline starter…again.

The only time the Mets win is in the offseason.

by GouldisGold on Jul 21, 2010 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

Pedro hasn’t even thrown a baseball this year.
