Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

Braves' Cox and Venters Suspended

Give me a freakin' break! According to DOB, Braves lefty reliever Jonny Venters has been suspended four games and fined for throwing at wee little Prince Fielder, and Bobby Cox was also suspended one game. What a crock of Sh!%.

Apparently it was because he threw "two consecutive pitches" at Fielder. This is just dumb by MLB, and an overreaction to a situation that was blown way out of proportion by the Brewers. Why would Venters be throwing at Fielder? No one on the Brewers has ever explained that. Shouldn't MLB at least address the reason other than "two consecutive pitches."

Just silly, and it could have a big impact on the pennant race. With Eric O'Flaherty on the disabled list, this takes away our top left-handed setup man for half a week. Hopefully they can appeal and get it reduced.

Please, someone, explain to me why Venters was throwing at Fielder (other than the fact that he's a really large target, and one could argue that his gravitational pull actually attracted the ball towards him).

To add a bit of insult to injury, I'm 90% certain that Bob Watson, a former Braves player, is the MLB executive in charge of issuing suspensions.

UPDATE:  Okay, I just went and watched every at-bat Fielder had in the series after looking at this chart:

Bigbabyfielder_medium

I would expect the Braves to pound the four corners of the strike zone against Fielder, especially high-and-inside... and after watching every at-bat that's exactly what they did. All but one of his hits came on mistake pitches in the middle of the zone, but we got him out high-and-inside and low-and-away. And we did a pretty good job of it as Fielder went 4-for-16 in the series, though he did hit two homeruns, again on mistake pitches in the middle of the zone.

When the book on a player says to pitch him high-and-inside, that's what a team is going to do. Sometimes the guy is going to get hit, especially someone like Fielder who dives into the ball. Fielder had already been hit 12 times coming into this series, now he's been hit 14 times, which ties his career high, and currently ranks third in the National League.

This suspension is essentially saying that teams cannot pitch Prince Fielder inside unless the pitcher on the mound has pinpoint control, and that's just so rarely going to be the case. Venters obviously didn't have his control with him when he came in the game. That's why Bobby went to Brewers manager Ken Macha the next day and told him this wasn't intentional. If it was intentional, Bobby never would have gone out of his way to talk to the opposing manager. This further adds to the silliness of the suspension. I'm incensed.

Even though I feel that it was obvious he was throwing at him, this suspension is ridiuclous – ESPECIALLY after the Brewers took care of business in baseball fashion yesterday.

This is all because Macha started whining to MLB about his guys getting hit. I’m sorry, do your guys crowd the plate? Effing Telitubby does, so he better expect to wear one here and there. Oh where, oh where has MLB’s balls gone. This S really pisses me off. Just let the teams settle it on the field and screw this suspension crap. I also agree that Macha and Riske should get suspended as well. Even if the ump says “I didn’t think he threw at him” once a warning is thrown out, I believe the pitcher and manager are gone regardless.

Fielder has always been an absolute douchebag, and he won’t ever change. Typical of an overhyped prospect/young player, much like Hanley in Florida. Because of who his father is(was? not sure if Cecil is still alive, but I think he is)Prince was an ass in high school, his entire time in the minors, and he continues to be one now. The Brewers have to put up with him now because of the fan base, but the organization will be very happy to be rid of him and his prima donna attitude.

No, I didn’t go to school with him, but I remember the scouting reports on him when he was coming out of high school. Most of them referenced his attitude. As for what the Brewers FO is thinking, I’m following what the national and local Wisconsin sports writers are saying.

heyward was just brushed by it. Probably nothing intentional. Glaus was hammered in the hip by it. Clearly intentional given the circumstances of the preceding day. I thought Heyward’s being hit was unintentional. He was pitched inside, and it was a little too inside. Glaus was the intentional one. I felt that the warning after Heyward was premature, but the warning should have come when Glausosaur got smacked.

its all up to the umpire’s discretion..or at least that is my understanding …i didnt check anything…what probably happened was a shady soccer call is the culprit here. (for those that dont understand this go rewatch the slovenia US match, refs will make a call, then realize it was wrong and make a phantom call to “make up for it”)…the ump realzied the warning wasnt necessary for a ball that wasnt intentional, and then issued the official warning after GLaus was hit (this is at least my take on what went throught the umps mind)

in the lower third, middle third, and upper third, his numbers were all worse inside. Pot calling kettle.

his hot zones are a plus shape through the strike zone

the four corners are cold zones. two inside, two outside.

the pitches venters threw weren’t even close. the first was directly over his head, the second drilled him in the back. ross didn’t come close to catching either of them.

That is my thinking, too. If we wanted to hit someone, why risk losing one of our best guys? And why would we want a rookie to do it? Seems like it’s quite possible that Venters was trying to pitch inside, because it’s the easiest way to get Fielder out. Then he almost hit him, got warned, and psyched himself out, knowing he couldn’t hit him. Then they tried to go inside and it got away from him. That seems like a far more likely scenario to me.

I respect the data comparison,

Sure, the situation didn’t call for it, but at the same time, Venters didn’t seem to put up any sort of argument or defense for himself when he was tossed. I don’t think it’s that unfathomable to think he was throwing at him.

That said, I don’t think the suspension was warranted and I think at the very least, it should’ve been doled out to both sides, not just the Braves.

Braves starting SS before the trade: .238/.334/.284/.618

Braves starting SS after the trade: .231/.375/.308/.683

Looks like a slight improvement from our side of the fence.

You can tell us about how Yunel does all day long, but it’s completely irrelevant. He’s not facing the same pitchers, he’s not hitting in the same ballpark, he’s not batting in the same place in the order, etc. It’s all circumstantial.

The only thing we can rely on as an actual comparison is how Gonzalez does in Atlanta compared with how Yunel was doing in Atlanta before the trade. So far, it’s a slight improvement.

What are you?

Five years old? Oh, you flagged me so I’ll flag you! hehehehehe.

Anyways, you’re posting all these updates because, “it’s pretty noteworthy that he’s doing so well directly after the trade.”

What?!

A struggling player, traded to a new team, suddenly breaks out and starts performing? OMG! That is shocking! I’ve never heard of something like that ever happening before in baseball.

/end sarcasm.

Obviously Yunel will play better in the 2nd half. Hell, he has to given his career numbers and how bad of a first half he had. That’s not why the Braves got rid of him. Otherwise players like Chavez, Cabrera, and McLouth would be gone too. The Braves got rid of him because of his attitude in the clubhouse (which is pretty damn evident from all the comments of the players after the trade – including the stand up ovation for Alex Gonzalez). If you can’t accept or understand that, then I guess you will keep following Yunel’s stat lines every single night. I just hope at some point the light bulb goes on.

by sag969 on Jul 19, 2010 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

all these updates?

i believe that’s one in this thread and another a few days ago.

and i do realize the importance of chemistry—-but that doesn’t excuse the fact that we sold extremely low on yunel and declined two better packages (one from Boston, one from Tampa).

yunel has been FAR more valuable than AGon over his career and will remain more valuable in the future.

conclusion: yunel>AGon by miles. if we were dead-set on trading him, we should have gotten much more than we did.

can you agree on these points or is it hopeless?

by kbertling353 on Jul 19, 2010 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

by Braves24 on Jul 19, 2010 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Better packages?

Please, enlighten me.

We got a solid shortstop with a hot bat with two decent prospects. In return we dumped a demoralizing player who was performing very poorly. For that reason, Yunel is NOT better than Alex Gonzalez. Not for the Braves. You seem to keep forgetting or ignoring the fact that the Braves are in first place, and want to keep it that way. When August rolls around and the playoff race is a little tight, or in October when we’re in a tight playoff game, you don’t want someone like Yunel on your roster. That’s all it boils down to.

And your comment," . if we were dead-set on trading him, we should have gotten much more than we did" is laughable. If Frank Wren made this trade, its obviously the best trade in the Braves interest. Its not like you’re smarter than him or understand the situation better. I think that’s the most amusing part about this whole argument.

by that logic, yunel should be left on the team because he was our starting shortstop when we compiled our first place record

and remind me why that’s the case, again? the rays offered a package around reid brignac and the red sox offered a package around marco scutaro. if the prospects were anywhere near B/C level, those packages would be more attractive (particularly the brignac deal).
just because frank wren is the gm of the braves, doesn’t mean he can’t panic and make bad trades. hell, omar minaya and dayton moore are gm’s.

Alright

Once last parting shot then I’m heading to bed.

In regards to the solid shortstop bit – I was referring to defense, not the bat.

That also leads into your second argument – your logic says that since we were in first place with Yunel struggling, we should have kept him! Following that logic, if we were in first place with a poor batting shortstop, then we should stay in first place with a poor batting shortstop (assuming that’s how Gonzalez plays out this year). Right?

Also, you ignored the next sentence when quoting me. Here’s the rest of it: “When August rolls around and the playoff race is a little tight, or in October when we’re in a tight playoff game, you don’t want someone like Yunel on your roster. That’s all it boils down to.” To reemphasize, no matter how bad Gonzalez’s bat is, he’s an upgrade over Yunel because of his attitude. ::sigh:: How many times am I going to have to repeat that?

And finally, obviously its not that Frank Wren can’t make a bad trade. I just think its funny that you’re judging the trade as a failure already when its not even a week old. And this is after the trade was orchestrated by a guy who has made some really good moves in the last 12 months. Sure, he’s not infallible, but unless you’re blind you can see this is best for the Braves in 2010. And that’s all I want as a fan right now.

there has been reports leaked out that said the Rays briefly talked with the Braves and the Red Sox didn’t but would have offered Scutaro.

Rob Bradford’s tweet about Boston:
“FWIW: #Braves didn’t inquire about Scutaro from #RedSox for Escobar deal. Only talked with #BlueJays. Some Sox fans had inquired. #mlb”

Jerry Crasnick’s tweets about Tampa Bay:
“For what it’s worth, I heard today that Tampa Bay expressed interest in SS Yunel Escobar before the Braves traded him to Toronto.”
“Was also told that Reid Brignac’s name was part of the talks. Not sure why it didn’t work out and ATL made the deal with Toronto”

Neither of these tweets, the only sources of those trade rumors, state that those players were offered. If reid brignac’s name was a part of the talks and the braves didn’t go that way, it was probably because the rays wanted yunel, the braves said give us brignac, and the rays said no. The boston rumor is just a response to fan curiosity, not even a substantial rumor.

Regardless

Of whether or not the pitch(es) were intentional, I’m just shocked by the four game suspension.

I realize that’s close to the norm for starters since they only pitch once every five games (so in effect they miss one out), but for a reliever that’s like missing two or three appearances. Against a big series vs. the Padres, there was definitely high probability that Venters would appear in all three games. So to me, the bigger surprise is not necessarily the suspension but more the length. I think if it was one or two games I wouldn’t be so pissed about it, but four games is way too much.

Anyways, Venters will more than likely appeal, and hopefully (at the very least) the appeal will allow him to face the Padres. Also, I’m not sure what can be raised in the appeal process, but maybe Braves will have a chance to discuss how Macha/Riskee or however you spell his name should have been tossed and suspended too.

by sag969 on Jul 19, 2010 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

i think with the power of the union, MLB has started doling out bigger suspensions knowing they are gonna cave like little bithces as soon as the MLBPA tells them too (now admittedly in this case its good that the MLB will act like a lil bitch, as it benefits us)…the MLB knows this will end as a 2 or 3 game suspension, and if thats what they want they give out a bigger one just to look like they are compromising (or at least thats my take)

Who knows

I don’t keep track of suspensions around the league, the only one I can really remember this year was the one against Cliff Lee. Still, I don’t really get the feeling that the MLB is “cracking down” on players and then planning to reduce suspensions after the appeal.

But who knows what the thinking was behind this suspension, it just seems questionable for so many reasons. At the end it probably just boils down to, if X player is ejected for hitting a batter after being warned, he’ll get Y games suspended.

by sag969 on Jul 19, 2010 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

no the suspension is crazy no matter how you look at it, all im syaing it the MLB probably looks at this as a 203 game suspension and hands out 4 knowing they union is going to appeal. then they settle at 2-3 games

any respectable baseball team would move him to the pitching coach role at best… it’s just annoying watching him loob the ball up there and get some sucess just by being freakishly weak. I think that hitters feel sorry for him and don’t hit b/c of that

I’m actually like Moyer. I don’t actually think he is great or anything but doing what he’s doing and at his age, you gotta respect that. You can’t hate him simply because the Braves (and many other teams) have the occasional inept hitting spells when he pitches.

He may throw “junk” but it’s better junk than I could throw and I’m significantly younger…but who isn’t?

anybody remember when the Cubs plunked Edgar Renteria? And on the next pitch he stole second, slid late and used the edge of the bag to sprinboard up and deliver a forearm shiver to Fontenot (or Theriot?), who was playing in his very first major league game. That was brutal. Nearly knocked the kid out cold, bloodied his nose real bad and the took a real, hard look in at the pitcher and the opposing dugout.

IMO

Major league baseball should just keep their hands off of situations like these. They always come across looking like they run a little league for 4 to 12 year olds.

Baseball in the majors is played by a bunch of men… they have balls and this testosterone stuff. If makes them big, strong, and sometimes angry. So when someone pisses someone else off then retaliation may happen. From the sounds of things Fielder is a jerk. So maybe Venters did pitch at him. Then again Fielder is the size of at least two people and likely to get plunked a lot on accident. Either way let the players figure it out.

What should have happened did. Milwaukee plunked two of our guys in retaliation the next day because they thought it was on purpose. That should have been it. Now we got suspensions and nonsense from MLB because they think they are big shit and tell everyone to play a sport like nice kids.

I think warning should only be given if both teams pitch at a player. How is it fair at all to issue warnings after Milwaukee hits two of our guys? Where is the Braves chance for redemption if they so choose? This is why the current system doesn’t work. Basically we just have bad blood now that will probably carry on into the future now with the Brewers because umps and MLB don’t allow common sense.

P.S. get the hell over this Escobar thing, or go be a Jays fan. It’s just old already.

Let's just say

Venters threw at him on purpose, and in the clubhouse went on to say that he did it on purpose. Last year that’s exactly what Bobby"hegawn"Jenks did, and what happened? No suspension and a $750 fine. There’s no consistency.

by Joseph_C on Jul 22, 2010 7:23 AM EDT up reply actions

The suspension is ridiculous.

Why on earth would Venters purposely, after airmailing a pitch over Fielder’s head and getting warned by the ump, immediately come back with a pitch even close to hitting the guy? I agree that in that situation Venters probably should have been ejected even if it was a mistake, just because he’d been warned not to do it again—and he did. But to suspend the guy for four games is uncalled for. Cox’s suspension is extra-nuts, because it implies that he had anything to do with it, and I can guarantee he didn’t give the sign for “hit the guy, even if it means you get ejected.”

I also don’t blame Prince Fielder for getting a little pissed. Venters accidentally hitting him after the warning would certainly seem deliberate, just because the ump warned Jonny about the consequences of just that. And anyone who is angry with Prince, well, he didn’t issue the suspension. He gave Venters a mean look, but I can’t say I wouldn’t have in his situation, and it looked like it took Venters 2 tries to hit him.

PF and obviously the Brewers, are whiny bitches.

I guess it matters who you whine to.

IMO, this is beyond preposterous. Especially when you consider the “warning” the very next game went unenforced.

Bobby indicated he and Macha were on the same page of what happened after the two had a conversation, I guess someone said one thing and did another.

We’ll serve whatever suspensions are imposed, and the Braves will show once again that they can overcome yet another example of partiality of the MLB and come out on top.
